The notice arrived on a Thursday, delivered by a rider from the regional administrative center in a sealed envelope addressed to the head of Reedfall Hall.
Raeha was in the entrance room when the rider came. She was at the writing desk, working on the reconstruction of the lineage records, which was proving the most difficult part of the project because lineage records required not just the names and dates she had memorized but the relational accuracy of how those names and dates connected to each other, which was a different kind of knowing. She set down her brush when she heard the horse in the courtyard.
She heard her father speak briefly to the rider, heard the door close, heard his footsteps on the stone floor of the entrance hall. He appeared in the doorway of the writing room. He had the envelope in his hand, already opened. He had read it standing in the entrance hall.
He held it out to her.
She took it and read it.
The letter was from the regional body that maintained the registry of recognized martial schools. It was three paragraphs in administrative language and said, in essence, two things. First: the destruction of Reedfall Hall's primary archive, which had served as the documented basis for the school's registration and the source verification for its transmitted techniques, constituted a material change in the conditions under which the registration had been granted. Second: to maintain active registration, the school would need to demonstrate continued pedagogical authority by having a qualified practitioner from the school complete the Seven Roads Assembly within the current cycle, which was scheduled to begin in four months.
Completion of the Assembly was not a new requirement for established schools. It was a requirement that was in abeyance for schools that had completed it previously and had not had their standing challenged. Their standing was now being challenged, for the first time in three generations.
Raeha read the letter twice and returned it to her father.
---
He had been expecting something. She understood this from the quality of his unsurprisedness, the particular stillness of a man who receives news he has been preparing to receive. He sat in the reading chair, the one that faced the courtyard window, and held the letter on his knee and looked out at the training area where two students were practicing footwork in the late afternoon light.
"How many people are registered from Reedfall?" she asked.
"Currently active? Three students at intermediate level and one at foundational. The three older practitioners who come three times a week are registered independently, not under Reedfall." He paused. "And me."
"Your leg."
"Yes."
She had already known this. She had done the calculation before asking the question, which was a habit her father had noticed and named once, years ago: you ask questions to which you already know the answer when you want the other person to participate in the knowing. She had not been able to determine if this was a good or a bad habit. She had continued doing it.
"The current students," she said. "Could any of them complete the Assembly?"
He considered this honestly rather than diplomatically, which she appreciated. "Insu has the physical capacity but not the technical foundation. He would not pass the analysis requirements. Sori could pass the first three Roads and possibly the fourth but would struggle after that. Biyeon is too new." He looked at the courtyard. "And they are not practitioners of the Reedfall method specifically. They have been learning it, but their foundational training was elsewhere. The Assembly tests the method, not just the practitioner."
"So."
"So," he agreed.
She went back to the writing desk and sat down. She did not pick up her brush. She looked at the unfinished lineage record and thought.
"The Assembly tests practitioners at the level they have reached," she said. "Not against an objective standard."
"Against a standard relative to the Roads completed. Each Road establishes the bar for the next."
"Someone with a weak physical foundation but strong analytical capacity."
"Would score well on the first Road and progressively struggle as the Roads advanced."
"Unless the analytical capacity contributed usefully to the physical capacity."
Her father was quiet for a moment. "That would depend on the practitioner."
She heard what he was not saying. She had always been reasonably good at hearing what he was not saying, which was useful given that a significant percentage of his communication consisted of it. He was not saying: I want you to go. He was also not saying: I want you to stay. He was saying, in the careful silence of a man who does not make arguments for outcomes he is uncertain about, that the question was open and the person who could answer it was in the room.
---
She thought about it for three days.
She thought about the list of eleven problematic techniques. She thought about the gap between the image and the execution, the gap that had been present in her all her life and that she had named but had not yet closed. She thought about what Minhwan had said: the capacity to see is not the capacity to do.
She thought about what it would mean to leave.
She had not, since the fire, left the compound for more than a day. Her father's injury and the reconstruction work had kept her here, and the here had accumulated the quality of a place she could not leave, not because she was prevented but because the need was ongoing and the need kept reconstituting itself as soon as she had met the last version of it.
She thought about the map in her room. The one her father had drawn before she had mentioned it.
She thought about that fact.
On the third day, she got up early, before the compound woke, and walked to the valley town. It was a two-hour walk on the valley road, through the grey pre-dawn that smelled of pine and cold water from the creek that ran alongside the road in the upper stretches. She arrived at the clerk's office when it opened and presented her registration materials and paid the registration fee, which she had calculated against the school's funds and determined was supportable if the reconstruction work was completed enough to begin charging nominal fees for instruction within the next two months.
She walked back up the valley road with the confirmation in her pocket.
She had not planned what she would say when she arrived home. When she came through the compound gate and saw her father in the courtyard, sitting on the stone bench with his walking stick resting against the wall beside him and his injured leg extended, she stopped.
She took out the confirmation and held it out to him.
He looked at it. He looked at her. He reached out and took the confirmation and read it and set it on the bench beside him.
He said nothing.
She stood in the gateway and waited.
After a while he said: "How did you pay for it?"
"School funds."
"That was for the new timber for the archive rooms."
"I know. We can defer the timber."
He looked at the courtyard again. She waited.
"You are not ready," he said.
"I know."
"The Assembly will not adjust itself for your readiness."
"I know."
He picked up his walking stick and levered himself upright, carefully, favoring the left leg. He stood for a moment, looking at the compound around him, the buildings and the training area and the open sky above the roofline where the covered walkway had been. Then he went inside without another word.
She was still standing in the gateway when he came back out.
He held something out to her.
A folded piece of paper. She took it and opened it.
A map. Hand-drawn in his careful, precise script. The seven Road locations, each marked with a brief notation: terrain type, typical weather conditions, the general character of the assessment at each location based on records from previous practitioners who had completed the route. The paper was not new. The notes had been written and revised over time, the ink of different ages in different places.
He had been maintaining this map for years.
She looked at the map and looked at him.
"The fourth Road is the hardest for someone with your training background," he said. "The terrain is demanding and the assessment requires sustained physical performance over multiple days. Plan your rest at the third Road accordingly."
She folded the map.
"The practitioners at the sixth Road tend to assess harshly on technical consistency," he continued. "You will need to demonstrate the same technique multiple times across multiple contexts. Your recall will serve you there if your execution is sufficient."
She put the map in her inner pocket.
"Go inside and eat something," he said. "You walked to town and back on an empty stomach."
She went inside.
---
That evening she spread the map on her desk and went through it systematically, the way she went through everything: methodically, building the structure in her mind so that it would be available for retrieval in the form she needed when she needed it. Seven locations. Four months until the Assembly began. Time enough to prepare, if she used it well.
She looked at the first location. Darye Valley. A three-day walk from Reedfall.
She thought about the practitioners she would meet there. She thought about the eleven techniques on her list. She thought about what it meant to be a person who had memorized everything and could execute almost nothing, arriving at a place where execution was what would be measured.
She thought about the note on the fourth Road: demanding terrain, sustained performance. She thought about the note on the sixth Road: technical consistency across multiple contexts. She thought about the note on the second Road, which was a single phrase in her father's handwriting: application under real conditions. No controlled environment.
She looked at her hands.
She needed someone who understood execution at the level she understood theory. She did not have such a person. She was going to walk into a rigorous assessment in four months without such a person.
Unless she found one.
She picked up a new page and began to write a list of what she needed to prepare. Not the techniques she needed to learn. She would get to those. She wrote first the thing she needed that she did not have and did not know where to find.
At the top of the page, she wrote: someone who knows what the body can do that the page cannot say.
She underlined it.
Then she started work on everything else.
The regional body's notice sat on the desk in the entrance room for the rest of the afternoon after her father had set it down and gone to sit in the courtyard chair. She had left it there deliberately, not because she could not retrieve the information from memory but because having it present on the desk held the situation external rather than internal, which was useful when she needed to think about a situation from outside rather than from inside.
She read it twice more over the course of the afternoon while working on other things.
The key phrase was in the second paragraph: demonstrated continued pedagogical authority. This was a legal formulation but it was also, she understood, a substantive one. Pedagogical authority was not simply the possession of knowledge. It was the demonstrated capacity to transmit and apply knowledge in the context of actual practice. The Assembly was a mechanism for demonstrating this capacity, not because competing in it was in itself pedagogically meaningful, but because completing it required a practitioner to demonstrate application, not just theoretical knowledge, in a range of contexts and against a range of opponents.
She was the only person at Reedfall with sufficient knowledge to demonstrate pedagogical authority. She was also the person at Reedfall least capable of demonstrating practical application.
She added this observation to the framework and thought about it.
---
There was a conversation she needed to have with her father and she had been arranging it in her mind for several hours before she had it.
The conversation was not about whether to go. She had made that decision. The conversation was about the decision having been made and the information her father needed to receive it accurately.
She found him in the side garden after the evening meal.
The garden was where he went when he was tired in the way that required open space rather than enclosed space. She had known this about him since she was small, had understood it as the same category as her own need for the walkway, a place the body chose for its particular quality. She was careful about the side garden, which meant she did not go there when he was in it unless she had a specific reason.
Tonight she had a specific reason.
She sat on the stone beside his chair, in the place she had sat three days ago when she had told him she still remembered. The stone had the same quality of cold as before, the cold that enters through cloth slowly, the kind that takes a while to notice.
She told him what she had decided.
He did not respond for a while. When he did, it was not with the argument she had anticipated. He asked a practical question: had she read the Assembly regulations regarding practitioner qualification requirements.
She had. She cited them from memory.
He asked another practical question: had she calculated the physical training regime she would need to complete in the four months before the Assembly began, given her current capacity.
She had. She outlined it.
He asked a third question: had she considered the possibility that she would fail.
She had. She told him what she thought failure meant and what it would require from both of them if it occurred.
He was quiet through all of this. When she finished, he looked at the garden, not at her, and she could not read exactly what he was thinking but she could read that the thinking was genuine and not performative, that he was actually working through the information rather than arriving at a conclusion he had already reached.
"If you complete the Assembly," he said, "Reedfall has its credential."
"Yes."
"If you do not."
"We have the reconstructed archive. That is something. It may be enough for a reduced registration."
"It is not the same as a practitioner's credential."
"No. But it is not nothing."
He looked at the garden.
She waited.
"The fourth Road is difficult," he said. "The terrain assessment is multi-day and requires sustained physical performance under conditions that are less favorable than any training environment."
"I know. I've read your notes on the map."
A pause. "The map is in the main building. Second drawer of the writing desk."
"I know," she said. "You maintain it. I've seen it when I've been working at the desk." She paused. "It's not new."
He looked at her then.
"You've been maintaining it for more than a year," she said. "The ink in the newer annotations is different from the ink in the older ones. The paper is the same age but the layers of notation are different ages."
His expression moved in the direction she associated with him deciding to acknowledge something he had hoped she had not noticed.
"I've been thinking about this for a while," he said.
"I know," she said.
---
The map was waiting in the second drawer of the writing desk when she went to retrieve it the following morning. She already knew what it contained, having seen it in pieces during the months of working at the desk, but holding it as a whole was different from holding its elements separately.
She spread it on the desk.
Seven locations, the route connecting them marked in her father's precise hand. The notations for each Road were in different generations of ink, the oldest almost faded in places, the newest clear and dark. Some of the notations were crossed out and replaced, which meant her father had updated his understanding of specific Roads based on new information he had received over the years.
He had been thinking about this for a long time.
She looked at the first Road location.
Darye Valley. Three days of walking. Road 1 qualifying: foundation assessment, the kind she was technically prepared for but physically underprepared for. She had four months to reduce the gap. The gap could not be closed in four months, but it could be made smaller.
She needed to find someone to help make it smaller.
She needed the kind of practitioner her grandfather had described: not an instructor, a person with integrated knowledge, the kind that lived in the body rather than the mind. Someone who had walked the territory often enough that they could tell her what the map left out.
She traced the route from Darye Valley to Road 2, to Road 3, through the northern region to Road 4 and 5 and 6 and the final Road at Sedan Valley. The route would take months to complete.
The person she was looking for might be anywhere on it.
She folded the map and put it in her bag.
She had work to do before she could look.
She did not sleep well the night after the registration. She lay on her sleeping mat and looked at the ceiling of her room and thought about what four months of preparation could realistically achieve. She ran the numbers: the physical conditioning she had outlined, the continued reconstruction work, the techniques on the uncertainty list that she needed to prioritize. She built the schedule in her mind, hour by hour, day by day.
By the time the night shifted toward grey, she had a plan.
It was not a perfect plan. It was a plan that depended on several things going better than her current baseline suggested they would. She was accustomed to plans that depended on things she could not fully control. She had learned, from years of working with memory, that the plan was not the outcome and the plan was not the preparation. The plan was simply the first step in the preparation. The preparation itself was the work.
She got up before dawn and began.
You've reached the end of this chapter
