Sprint 3 day twenty-nine began exactly as Sprint 3 day twenty-eight had ended.
The morning brief ran at seven. Throughput at one hundred and nineteen percent. Distribution on schedule. Field indicators nominal. Vane ran his final supervised activation sequence with Peder and was certified at the end of it — the first Legion engineer to receive activation certification, which Charlotte noted in the team record and the Sprint board simultaneously.
She ran the brief. She answered three questions about the Sprint 4 planning scope. She assigned Tomas the task of drafting the agricultural market expansion proposal in time for the Sprint 3 completion review.
She did all of this with the focused efficiency of someone who knew the work was the work and the work continued regardless.
After the brief, she went to her desk.
The map was where she had left it. The working copy on the left side of the desk, the clean copy on the right, and the space in the center where she worked. The proof of concept element was on the shelf. The tertiary achievement was beside it.
She opened the Sprint 4 planning document.
The document had been growing for two weeks. She had been adding items as they surfaced: the agricultural market expansion, the vineyard scaling, the ore supply chain development, Vane's certification and the activation training pipeline for his two remaining candidates, the tertiary activation refinement toward fifteen months, the Obsidian supply chain integration. Each item had a dependency map and an owner and a preliminary timeline.
She reviewed the Obsidian integration section.
It required, she had been noting, input from someone who knew the northern supply chain at the operational level — not just the strategic level, which was in the recovery document, but the specific tactical level of which suppliers could be reached by which routes at which times of year and what the actual logistics looked like from the northern side.
She made a note: *Obsidian integration section — input required from Obsidian operational context. Flag for sprint review meeting day 45.*
She looked at the note.
Then she wrote below it: *Expected correspondent: Kaelen Valerand von Obsidian. See also: letters, ongoing.*
---
The first letter arrived on day thirty-one.
Not the operations correspondence — she had been exchanging those through the estate communication array since day twenty-nine, logistics questions and supply chain updates and the Obsidian adaptation notes follow-up that Mara had sent and Kaelen had responded to with three specific technical questions that required Mara's direct input.
This letter arrived separately. Aldric brought it to the workshop without explanation, set it on her desk, and withdrew.
It was addressed to *Lyra von Aurelia, Domain Administrator* in Kaelen's precise hand, with the Legion seal.
Charlotte looked at it for a moment.
Then she opened it.
It was four pages. The first two covered the Obsidian situation: arrival, initial assessment, the state of the fortress, the ward systems, the first observations about which elements of the recovery document were tracking correctly and which would need adjustment. Specific, operational, the kind of report she had been receiving through official channels.
The third page began: *The retired arcanist. Her name is Sanna, as you found. She answered the door herself. Her house was exactly as you described — small, tidy, the specific quality of someone who has been living alone well for a long time.*
*I asked her the first question on the discovery list. She answered for two hours.*
*She knew things that no one else in Obsidian knew, because no one had asked her in eight years, and she had been waiting for someone to come with the right questions. I asked them. She answered.*
*I thought you should know that the methodology worked exactly as intended.*
The fourth page: *The spring light on the eastern face. I have been watching for it since I arrived. The ice is still present — we are in the deep cold period, weeks yet before the melt begins. But I have been watching the quality of the morning light on the rock face, and I think I understand now what I was trying to describe when I told you about it.*
*There is a specific hour, just after dawn, when the low sun catches the ice at the correct angle and the entire face illuminates from within. Not reflected light — something that looks like the light is coming from inside the stone itself. It lasts approximately twelve minutes. I have seen it twice since arriving.*
*I thought you should know that it is exactly as I described. And that describing it was insufficient.*
Charlotte read the letter twice.
Then she set it on the left side of her desk, beside the working copy of the map, and picked up her pen.
---
She wrote back the same day.
The letter covered four topics: the Sprint 4 planning update, including the three new items she had added since the clean copy session; the ward system arcanist and what Mara had noted about the parallel structure between Sanna's institutional knowledge and what Peder had held at Aurelia before he was asked; the vineyard expansion, which had produced its first commercial distribution run the previous day and which Calla had observed from the doorway of her farmhouse with the expression of someone watching something they had prepared for forty years finally beginning; and the eastern face of the Obsidian range.
She wrote: *The light you described — the twelve minutes when it looks like it comes from inside the stone. I have been thinking about what you said, that describing it was insufficient.*
*I think about the secondary proof of concept on the shelf. It has been there since day one. It is still warm. I check it most mornings, not because I need to verify it is still working but because something about the presence of the first thing that worked matters to me in a way that I have not put in the risk register.*
*I think the eastern face light is like that. The thing that tells you something about the place that the rest of it doesn't. The thing you keep returning to not because you need to verify it but because it matters.*
*I would like to see it. I have said this before. I am saying it again because it is still true.*
She sealed the letter. She sent it via the estate communication array, flagged for the Legion dispatch system at the northern relay.
Then she went back to the Sprint 4 planning document.
The workshop was warm.
---
The letters became a rhythm.
Every three days, approximately, a letter arrived. Every three days, approximately, she wrote one. The operational content ran alongside the other content the way the knowledge map sessions had run alongside the other content — both things present simultaneously, both equally real.
The operational content was substantial. The Obsidian recovery document implementation was proceeding through its first phase with the specific combination of expected results and unexpected complications that any first implementation produced. Charlotte was reading the implementation reports and recognizing patterns she had seen in her own Sprint 1: the complications that arose not from the methodology being wrong but from the environmental specifics she had not been able to anticipate from the outside.
She wrote about these. She identified which complications were structural and which were transitional. She suggested adjustment approaches.
He wrote back with the results of the adjustments, which worked approximately seventy percent of the time and required further iteration the other thirty.
This was the work.
The other content was harder to describe as a category because it did not fit neatly into any category she had previously maintained.
He wrote about Sanna, who had been working through the discovery interview process for two weeks and had begun drawing maps of the ward system maintenance cycle that no one had documented before. He wrote about the ice engineers — Brennan's cousin, it turned out, was in Obsidian and had been maintaining one of the minor ward systems on a volunteer basis for three years because he had the knowledge and no one had asked him to formalize it. He wrote about the Legion logistics sergeant who had been managing the supply chain for the border garrison for eight years and had a better operational picture of the northern territory supplier network than any formal report Charlotte had seen.
He wrote, once, about the twelve-minute light.
Charlotte wrote about Aurelia. About Fen's fourth housing modification, which she had produced on her own initiative during Sprint 3 week four and which reduced production time by a further nine percent. About the vineyard expansion, which was running through three guild distribution channels and which Calla had described to Charlotte as *finally, we are finally doing this* with the specific quality of someone who had been ready for forty years. About the morning brief on day thirty-seven, when Mara had announced that the winter storm warning system had successfully predicted a minor arcane event twelve hours in advance, and the production floor had run a modified reduced schedule that prevented the disruption entirely.
She wrote, once, about the secondary proof of concept on the shelf and what she had been thinking when she told him about it in the letter.
The letters accumulated in the document case she had started carrying them in, which was the same document case she had taken to the Development Council.
---
Sprint 3 completed on day forty-five at nine in the morning.
Charlotte was running the activation sequence review with Vane when the System board updated:
*[SPRINT 3: COMPLETE. ALL KPIs MET. REGIONAL MARKET EXPANSION: ACHIEVED. ADDITIONAL: 3 DOMAIN CONTACTS FROM DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL. SPRINT 4 INITIATED. DURATION: 60 DAYS.]*
She read it. She transferred the element she was holding to the output shelf.
"Sprint 3 is complete," she said to Vane.
"Yes," he said, looking at the board. "I see it."
She posted the notification to the team board and went to prepare for the sprint review meeting.
The meeting was scheduled for two o'clock.
Kaelen would be there.
---
The sprint review meeting was scheduled for two o'clock.
At one-fifty, Charlotte was at her desk with the Sprint 4 planning document and the operational summary and the Obsidian integration section and the three pages of notes she had prepared for the Obsidian supply chain discussion.
She heard the column arrive at one-fifty-seven.
She knew it was the column because she had learned, in twelve weeks of having a Legion garrison at the estate, to distinguish between different categories of hoofbeat sound. Two hundred cavalry had a specific sound. Fifty had a different sound. The sprint review escort would be smaller than the original arrival.
It sounded like approximately sixty horses. A smaller column than the original arrival. Appropriate.
She heard the courtyard activity. She heard Aldric's voice and a voice she recognized.
She finished the note she was writing. She set down her pen. She picked up the Sprint 4 planning document and the Obsidian integration section.
She walked to the meeting room.
---
Kaelen was already there.
He was standing at the window, looking at the estate courtyard — the workshop visible from this angle, the production floor running its afternoon sequences. He had not sat down. He was in travel clothes, not the full armor, which meant the column had made good time and he had not needed to ride at the pace that required full kit.
He turned when she entered.
Charlotte looked at him.
She had last seen him forty-two minutes into day twenty-nine, walking toward the courtyard and the column and Obsidian while the morning was still grey and the eastern hills had not yet caught the light. She had last looked at him from the bench in the back courtyard, with the full armor and the departure and twenty-eight days between that moment and this one.
Twenty-eight days of letters and operational reports and the twelve-minute light on the eastern face and the recovery document implementation and Sanna the arcanist and the secondary proof of concept and *I would like to see it. I am saying it again because it is still true.*
"The sprint review," she said.
"Yes," he said. "The sprint review."
She set the planning document on the table.
He sat down. She sat down. The Sprint 4 planning document was between them, the Obsidian integration section on the top.
They ran the sprint review.
It took two hours. The Sprint 3 metrics were reviewed, the Sprint 4 scope was discussed and four items were revised based on Kaelen's input on the northern supply chain, the Obsidian integration section was revised in real time as they worked through the dependency analysis, and two new items were added based on the recovery document implementation results from the first phase.
It was, Charlotte thought, the most efficient two-hour meeting she had run since the Development Council preparation. The specific efficiency of two people who understood the material completely and had been corresponding about it for twenty-eight days.
At the end of the meeting, Kaelen looked at the revised Sprint 4 document.
"This is ready," he said.
"Yes," Charlotte said. "It is."
She looked at him across the table.
He looked at her.
"The back courtyard," she said. "When you have a moment."
"Yes," he said. "I will have a moment."
She gathered the planning documents and walked back to her study.
---
The back courtyard at four in the afternoon had the specific winter light — the low angle, the pale gold, the quality that told you something about the place.
Charlotte was there when Kaelen arrived.
He stood beside her and looked at the light on the courtyard wall. She looked at it too.
"The eastern face," she said. "The twelve minutes."
"Yes," he said.
"I read your description again," she said. "In the letter. The light that looks like it comes from inside the stone."
"Yes," he said.
"I think I understand it now," she said. "Better than when you first described it. Before I had read the letter." She paused. "Some descriptions are better the second time."
He turned to look at her.
She turned to look at him.
Twenty-eight days of letters. Twenty-eight days of the ward system arcanist and the recovery document implementation and the vineyard expansion and the morning briefs and the secondary proof of concept warm on the shelf. Twenty-eight days of *I would like to see it* and the acknowledgment that the describing was insufficient.
Charlotte looked at him.
"The sprint review is complete," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"You have until day sixty before you need to return to Obsidian," she said. "The sprint runs sixty days."
"Yes," he said. "I know."
"The Obsidian section of the map," she said. "Next winter's field data."
"Yes," he said.
"That is seven months away," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
"I would like to see the eastern face," she said. "The twelve-minute light. Not in a letter."
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said. "I know."
"In the spring," she said. "Late April. You said it was late April when the ice begins to catch the light."
"Yes," he said. "Late April."
"Sprint 4 ends in sixty days," she said. "Late April is approximately eight weeks after Sprint 4 ends."
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said. "It is."
Charlotte looked at the courtyard wall. The light was the pale gold of late winter afternoon, the specific quality she had written about in the knowledge map and described in a letter and was looking at now.
"I am telling you," she said, "so that you know it is in the plan."
He was quiet for a moment.
"Yes," he said. "I understand that you are telling me so that I know it is in the plan."
She turned to look at him.
"Good," she said.
He held her gaze for a long moment. The amber eye. The blue one. Both doing the same thing, which she had known for some time and had stopped needing to analyze.
"Good," he said.
Charlotte looked at the wall one more time. Then she turned toward the door.
"The morning brief is at seven," she said.
"Yes," he said. "I know."
She walked inside.
The workshop was warm.
She got back to work.
---
Sprint 4 began on day forty-six.
The morning brief was at seven. Charlotte ran it with Kaelen at the back of the room, in the position he had occupied since day four, in the workshop that had been running since day three.
She covered the Sprint 4 objectives: sixty days, larger scope than any previous sprint, the agricultural market expansion as the primary commercial development and the Obsidian supply chain integration as the primary operational development and the tertiary activation refinement toward fifteen months as the primary technical development.
After the brief, Peder stayed behind. He looked at the Sprint 4 board. He looked at the sixty-day timeline.
"Sixty days," he said.
"Yes," Charlotte said. "Larger scope."
"What comes after Sprint 4," he said.
Charlotte looked at the board.
It was, she realized, the first time anyone on the team had asked this question directly. She had been thinking about it — the System board, which had generated Sprint 4 automatically upon Sprint 3 completion without any indication of an end condition, suggested that the sprints would continue as long as the domain was operational and growing. Whether the System would eventually release her, or whether the System was now simply the operational infrastructure of a functioning domain, she did not know.
She had stopped worrying about this approximately three weeks ago.
"Sprint 5," she said.
Peder looked at her.
"You're staying," he said. It was not a question. It was the acknowledgment of something he had known for some time and had decided to confirm.
"Yes," Charlotte said. "I'm staying."
He nodded — the same quality as Kaelen's single precise nod, the acknowledgment of something decided and not requiring further discussion.
"Then Sprint 5," he said.
He returned to the activation station.
Charlotte stood at the Sprint 4 board for a moment.
Then she picked up her pen and made three notes about the Sprint 4 tertiary activation refinement pathway.
The workshop was warm.
She got back to work.
---
The sprint settled into its rhythm within forty-eight hours.
The Aurelia team had been through three sprints now and knew how to begin a new one: the scope assessment on day one, the dependency mapping on day two, the working group formations on day three, and by day four the specific operational cadence of a team that had found its pace and was running in it.
Charlotte watched this from the morning briefs and the production floor and the knowledge map sessions that had resumed with Kaelen's return — the full sessions, the evening ones, the ones that ran until ten or eleven.
The map needed the Obsidian section completed with actual field data, which Kaelen had begun adding from the records he had brought. It also needed the agricultural expansion section, which was growing with the pace of the Sprint 4 market development. And it needed the winter storm data from Mara's first full season of observations, which would complete the field fluctuation section in a way that the preliminary observations had not.
Charlotte had estimated the map would be complete — truly complete, with all sections finalized — sometime in late Sprint 4.
She had not said this to Kaelen. He had not asked.
They both knew the timeline.
The sprint ran. The letters continued — less frequent now that they were in the same building, but still present. Charlotte had started keeping them in a different section of the document case than the operational correspondence, which she had not done deliberately and had noticed when she went to file the most recent one.
She noted this and did not write it in the risk register.
The risk register had seventeen blank pages left in it. She had been using it since day one. She was not, she had decided sometime in Sprint 3, going to start a new one.
She was going to use up the remaining pages. The things she wrote in the remaining pages would be different from what she had written in the first pages — not better or worse, just from a different position, looking at different things.
She was looking forward to writing them.
The workshop was warm.
Sprint 4 had fifty-eight days remaining.
She got back to work.
You've reached the end of this chapter

She posted the notification to the team board and went to prepare for the sprint review meeting.
The meeting was scheduled for two o'clock.
Kaelen would be there.

The sprint review meeting was scheduled for two o'clock.
At one-fifty, Charlotte was at her desk with the Sprint 4 planning document and the operational summary and the Obsidian integration section and the three pages of notes she had prepared for the Obsidian supply chain discussion.
