Summer at Aurelia had a specific quality that Charlotte had been trying to describe for months and had not fully succeeded at describing.
She had written about the light — the way it extended into the evening, the angle it came from in the late afternoon, the specific warmth that was not the warmth of Dublin in summer but had the same principle. She had written about the sound of the production floor through open windows, which in summer carried differently than in winter because the air was different. She had written about the west courtyard in the afternoon, which was where Kaelen had been spending time, and the crab apple tree that had finished blooming but was still green.
She had not written about the evenings.
The evenings at Aurelia in summer were what she had not had words for. The light stayed too long, and the temperature stayed warm after the work day ended, and the estate had a specific quality of settled activity — not stopped, just quieter, the people and the work finding the lower register of a long day that was not yet done.
On the evening of Sprint 6 day twelve, Charlotte and Kaelen sat in the back courtyard after the knowledge map session.
Not working. Sitting.
The map was in the study. The sprint review documents were in the file. The advisory notes were updated. The second-generation system joint session had concluded three hours earlier with a working draft of the development framework. Wren had stayed for dinner and was sleeping in the staff quarters.
Charlotte sat on the bench.
Kaelen sat beside her.
The evening light was doing the thing it did.
"This is what you meant," he said.
She looked at him.
"When you wrote about the summer light," he said. "This specific quality."
"Yes," she said.
"The light extends," he said. "And the place — settles. Into itself."
Charlotte held her gaze on the courtyard wall.
"Yes," she said. "That is the right word. Settles."
He held his gaze on the wall.
"Obsidian does not do this," he said. "The summer is shorter. The evenings are still cooler than this."
"Yes," she said.
"This is different from anything I have at home," he said.
Charlotte held her gaze on the wall.
"Yes," she said.
"I want both," he said. "I said this before — I want to know both winters, both lights."
"Yes," she said. "I know."
He held his gaze on the courtyard.
"I have been thinking," he said, "about what that looks like practically."
Charlotte turned to look at him.
"Practically," she said.
"Yes," he said. "The Sprint cycles. The advisory work. The Obsidian implementation. The second-generation system development. The map." He paused. "All of it requires — presence. Ongoing presence. In both places."
Charlotte held his gaze.
"Yes," she said.
"I have been thinking about how to structure that," he said.
"Tell me," she said.
He had been thinking about it carefully — she could tell from the specific quality of how he described it, the precision of someone who had run the numbers before presenting them.
"Four months at Aurelia, two months at Obsidian, four months at Aurelia, two months at Obsidian," he said. "Adjusted for sprint cycles and the second-generation system development timeline. The Obsidian months coordinating with the winter data collection period and the implementation review schedule."
Charlotte held his gaze.
"You worked this out," she said.
"Yes," he said. "Over the past two weeks."
"You worked out a schedule for being in two places," she said.
"Yes," he said. "And I would like to know what you think of it."
Charlotte looked at the courtyard wall.
She thought about the schedule. She thought about the Sprint cycles and the second-generation system and the advisory work and the Obsidian implementation.
She thought about the map, which had fifty pages and a living section that kept growing.
"The Obsidian months," she said. "Can I come."
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said. "That is — I was hoping you would. The advisory work can be conducted remotely for the months you are at Obsidian. The Aurelia operation runs without you for two months at a time."
"Yes," she said. "It does."
He held her gaze.
"The Aurelia months," he said. "I have been here now for twelve days. It does not feel like a visit."
"No," she said.
"It feels like—" He stopped.
"Yes," she said. "It does."
He held her gaze.
"I would like to use the schedule," he said. "If you agree."
Charlotte held his gaze for a moment.
"Practically," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
"The map room needs updating every season," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"The knowledge map needs both handwritings," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"And the sprint review needs us both present," she said.
"Yes," he said.
Charlotte looked at the evening light on the courtyard wall.
"The schedule works," she said.
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said. "I thought so."
She held his gaze.
"Four months here," she said. "Two months there. Four months here. Two months there."
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
"Both winters," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"Both lights," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
The evening was warm. The courtyard was settled. The workshop was still running the last sequences of the day.
"Goodnight," she said.
"Goodnight," he said.
She went inside.
She did not go to her desk. She went to the window of the study and looked out at the courtyard where Kaelen was still sitting, looking at the evening light on the wall.
She thought about the schedule.
Four months here. Two months there.
Both winters. Both lights. Both homes.
She went to her desk and opened the new risk register.
She wrote: *Sprint 6, day 12. He proposed a schedule. Four and two and four and two. I said yes. Both winters. Both lights.*
Below it she wrote: *This is what practical looks like, for the thing that is not in any professional category.*
She looked at the sentence.
Below it she wrote, in the specific small handwriting: *We are going to be good at this. I think we have been practicing for a long time.*
She closed the register.
The workshop was warm.
She got back to work.

The morning brief on day thirteen opened with an item Charlotte had not put on the agenda.
Kaelen put it there.
He had arrived at the brief before she had — unusual, but not unprecedented; he had been arriving before her occasionally since day three of the visit, which she had noted and not commented on. When she came in, the sprint board had a new item in the standing section: *Schedule: cross-domain operational calendar, Q1-Q4.*
She looked at it.
He was at the back of the room.
She ran the brief. After the metrics and the noticing item and the field indicator update from Mara, she indicated the new item.
"Cross-domain operational calendar," she said. "This is a planning item. The combined Aurelia-Obsidian operation has been running coordinated schedules informally for several months. We are formalizing the coordination into a quarterly calendar."
The team received this with the specific quality she had come to expect from them: attentive, not performative.
Peder said: "The sprint cycles."
"Yes," Charlotte said. "The sprint cycles will anchor the calendar. The advisory visits, the Obsidian implementation reviews, the second-generation system development sessions, and the knowledge exchange will be planned around them."
"And the Grand Duke's presence at Aurelia," Tomas said, with the neutrality of someone who had decided to ask the question that was in everyone's mind.
Charlotte held Tomas's gaze.
"The Grand Duke will be at Aurelia for the spring and summer periods and at Obsidian for the winter periods," she said. "The specific timing will be adjusted by sprint cycle."
The room was quiet.
Peder, from his station: "Good."
That was all anyone said.
The brief continued.
After the brief, Aldric found Charlotte in the corridor.
"The spring quarters," he said. "I will need advance notice for the household arrangements."
"Yes," Charlotte said. "I will give you the first quarter calendar by end of sprint."
He nodded.
"Also," he said, "the west courtyard bench. It has been in use more frequently. I was thinking of adding a second one."
Charlotte held his gaze.
"Yes," she said. "Add the second one."
He walked back toward the kitchen.
Charlotte stood in the corridor for a moment.
Then she went to find Kaelen.
---
He was in the study, updating the Sprint 7 scope document with the calendar implications.
"The morning brief," she said.
He looked up.
"You put the calendar on the board," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"Before asking me," she said.
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said. "I should have asked first."
Charlotte held his gaze.
"You were right to put it on the board," she said. "The team needed to know. I was not going to tell them in a brief this week — I would have found a reason to wait. You saw that and put it on the board."
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said.
"You know me well enough to know when I am going to wait too long," she said.
"Yes," he said. "I think so."
She held his gaze.
"Next time," she said, "ask me. I may still agree. But ask."
"Yes," he said. "I will."
She sat down across from him.
"The calendar," she said. "Four months here, two months at Obsidian. Starting when."
"The end of Sprint 6," he said. "I return to Obsidian for the winter data collection period and the phase two review. I come back for Sprint 7."
"Sprint 7 starts in approximately fifty days," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
"Fifty days," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
"And then you are back for four months," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
"Good," she said.
She picked up her pen.
"The Sprint 7 scope," she said. "Page six. The cross-domain activation training protocol. I have a concern about the Obsidian timeline."
"Tell me," he said.
She did. They worked through it for forty minutes. By the end, the timeline had been adjusted in two places and the concern was resolved.
---
On day fourteen, Wren attended the morning brief.
She stood at the back of the room — the position that had become associated with Kaelen, but that Kaelen was not using today because he was at the front helping Charlotte present the calendar item.
Wren watched.
After the brief, Charlotte found her in the corridor.
"The brief format," Wren said. "I want to ask about something."
"Yes," Charlotte said.
"The noticing item goes first," Wren said. "At Obsidian, the Grand Duke moved it to first six weeks ago."
"Yes," Charlotte said.
"Here it has been first since before that," Wren said.
"Yes," Charlotte said. "It went first here after I came back from Obsidian and he told me he had moved it."
Wren held her gaze.
"He moved it because he saw it here," Wren said.
"Yes," Charlotte said.
"And you moved it here because he moved it there," Wren said.
"Yes," Charlotte said.
Wren held her gaze.
"The format is cross-pollinating," she said.
Charlotte held her gaze.
"Yes," she said. "That is exactly what it is doing."
Wren was quiet for a moment.
"I am going to document this," she said. "The cross-pollination. Which format elements originated where and how they moved. For the second-generation system documentation."
Charlotte held her gaze.
"Yes," she said. "That would be valuable."
Wren nodded and walked back toward the field data room.
Charlotte stood in the corridor.
She thought about Wren, who had been in the Obsidian garrison for twelve years and who was now tracking the cross-pollination of format elements between two territories for a second-generation system documentation that had not existed when she arrived.
The compounding at Obsidian had started.
She went to tell Kaelen.
---
The knowledge map session on day fourteen ran until eleven.
They had been adding the summer field data — the first summer data either of them had collected, which was filling in sections of the map that had only had winter and spring observations. The map was growing again, the same way it had grown in the early months: by small additions that changed the character of the sections they touched.
At ten-thirty, Kaelen set down his pen.
"Fifty pages," he said.
"Fifty-three now," Charlotte said.
He looked at the map spread across the desk — the full working copy, all fifty-three pages in their sections.
"We said forty-four," he said. "When the Obsidian section was complete."
"Yes," she said. "We underestimated the summer data."
He held his gaze on the map.
"We underestimated a lot of things," he said.
Charlotte held her gaze on the map.
"Yes," she said.
He looked at her.
"The map will not be finished," he said.
"No," she said.
"Because the territory will keep changing," he said.
"Yes," she said.
"And we will keep mapping it," he said.
She held his gaze.
"Yes," she said. "We will."
He held her gaze.
"Together," he said.
"Yes," she said. "Together."
He held her gaze for a long moment.
"The endpaper," he said.
"What about it," she said.
"I want to add something," he said.
She held his gaze.
She opened the map to the endpaper. Both entries — hers from April, her addition from day fifty-four.
He picked up his pen.
He wrote, below both entries, in his precise military notation that she had been reading alongside her own handwriting for nearly a year: *The map is not finished. It will not be finished. Both of us know this and are building it anyway. That is also in the record.*
He dated it. He put his name beside the date.
Charlotte read the entry.
She held his gaze.
"Yes," she said. "That is also in the record."
She closed the map.
Both winters. Both lights. Both homes.
The map not finished. Building it anyway.
The workshop was warm.
She got back to work.
---
On day fifteen, Calla came to the estate.
She did not announce visits. She had not announced any of them — she arrived when she had something to bring or something to say, and she left when both were accomplished. This time she arrived with two bottles of the summer vintage, which was different from the winter vintage in ways that Calla described for twenty minutes to anyone who would listen.
Charlotte and Kaelen were both in the estate when she arrived. Aldric brought her to the workshop, because that was where Charlotte was, and Calla looked at the workshop the way she always looked at it — with the assessment of someone who had been watching the estate for forty years and was continuously updating her model.
"The production floor," Calla said. "It is louder than last summer."
"Yes," Charlotte said. "The throughput is higher."
"And him," Calla said, indicating Kaelen, who was reviewing the sprint board.
"He is here through the end of Sprint 6," Charlotte said.
"And after," Calla said.
Charlotte held Calla's gaze.
"And after," she said.
Calla looked at Kaelen, who had turned from the sprint board and was looking at Calla with the specific quality he brought to new assessments — attentive, patient, without the performance of attention.
"You brought the summer vintage," he said.
"Yes," Calla said.
"The fermentation period was different this year," he said. "The spring was warmer. The grapes came earlier."
Calla held his gaze.
"Yes," she said. "You know viticulture."
"I know the climate data for this territory," he said. "And I asked you about the fermentation process the last time we visited."
Calla held his gaze.
"You remember what I told you," she said.
"Yes," he said. "You told me the fermentation responds to the season before the harvest more than the harvest itself. A warmer spring means a different chemical composition in the must before the pressing."
Calla looked at him for a long moment.
Then she opened one of the bottles.
"Sit down," she said. "Both of you."
They sat.
Calla poured. She talked about the summer vintage — the specific differences from the winter vintage, the changes she had observed in the production process, what she expected it would taste like in two years when it had aged properly.
Charlotte listened and tasted the wine, which was different from the winter vintage in the specific ways Calla described.
Kaelen listened and asked three questions, all of which were the questions Calla had been waiting for someone to ask for approximately forty years.
After an hour, Calla gathered the second bottle — which she had not opened — and stood to leave.
At the door she stopped.
"Lady Aurelia," she said.
Charlotte looked up.
"The estate," Calla said. "It is different from what it was."
"Yes," Charlotte said.
"Not the production numbers," Calla said. "The quality of the place. It feels like a place that has decided to continue."
Charlotte held her gaze.
"Yes," she said. "I think it has."
Calla held her gaze.
"Good," she said.
She left.
Charlotte sat with the empty glass.
Kaelen sat across from her.
"She has been watching this estate for forty years," he said.
"Yes," Charlotte said.
"And she says it has decided to continue," he said.
"Yes," she said.
He held her gaze.
"That is a specific kind of assessment," he said. "Not the production numbers. The quality of the place."
"Yes," she said.
He held her gaze.
"What changed," he said.
Charlotte held his gaze.
"The people," she said. "The people who were here stopped expecting the decline to continue. And when they stopped expecting it, the decline stopped."
He held her gaze.
"Because of what you built," he said.
"Because of what we built," she said.
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said. "We."
The afternoon was warm. The summer light was doing its thing on the courtyard wall. The second bottle of Calla's summer vintage was sitting on the desk, for another occasion.
Charlotte picked up the risk register.
She wrote: *Day 15. Calla came. She said the estate has decided to continue. She is right.*
Below it she wrote: *A place that has decided to continue. I think that is also true of the people in it. And of the two people who have been building the map.*
She looked at the sentence.
Below it: *We have decided to continue. Together. That is the record.*
She closed the register.
Both winters. Both lights.
The map not finished.
Building it anyway.
Together.
The workshop was warm.
She got back to work.
You've reached the end of this chapter
Summer at Aurelia had a specific quality that Charlotte had been trying to describe for months and had not fully succeeded at describing.
She had written about the light — the way it extended into the evening, the angle it came from in the late afternoon, the specific warmth that was not the warmth of Dublin in summer but had the same principle.

He held her gaze.
"I would like to use the schedule," he said. "If you agree."
Charlotte held his gaze for a moment.
"Practically," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
"The map room needs updating every season," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"The knowledge map needs both handwritings," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"And the sprint review needs us both present," she said.
"Yes," he said.
Charlotte looked at the evening light on the courtyard wall.
"The schedule works," she said.
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said. "I thought so."
She held his gaze.
"Four months here," she said. "Two months there. Four months here. Two months there."
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
"Both winters," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"Both lights," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
The evening was warm. The courtyard was settled. The workshop was still running the last sequences of the day.
"Goodnight," she said.
"Goodnight," he said.

The morning brief on day thirteen opened with an item Charlotte had not put on the agenda.
Kaelen put it there.
He had arrived at the brief before she had — unusual, but not unprecedented; he had been arriving before her occasionally since day three of the visit, which she had noted and not commented on.
