Sprint 6 ended on day sixty at eleven in the morning.
Charlotte was in the study when the System board updated. She had been reviewing the Sprint 7 scope document — the combined Aurelia-Obsidian scope that she and Kaelen had been building for three weeks — when the notification appeared.
*[SPRINT 6: COMPLETE. CROSS-DOMAIN OPERATIONAL CALENDAR: ESTABLISHED. SECOND-GENERATION FIELD INDICATOR SYSTEM: PHASE 1 INITIATED. METHODOLOGY TRANSFER: ADVANCED.]*
She read *ADVANCED*.
Not complete. Not finished. Advanced.
She posted the notification to the team board and went to find Kaelen.
He was in the back courtyard — the small one, theirs — with the sprint board documentation he had been reviewing. He looked up when she came out.
"Sprint 6 is complete," she said.
"Yes," he said. "I saw the notification."
She sat down on the bench.
He sat beside her.
"Twenty days," she said.
"Yes," he said. "Twenty days until I leave for Obsidian."
She held his gaze.
"And then sixty days until Sprint 7," she said.
"Yes," he said. "And then I am back."
She held his gaze.
The courtyard was warm — summer holding its ground, the evenings still long. In twenty days it would begin to shift toward autumn. Kaelen would be in Obsidian for the winter. She would be at Aurelia.
Both winters. Both lights.
She already knew what winter at Aurelia looked like. She had been here for one. She had described it to Kaelen — the lower light, the thick workshop smoke, the specific cold that was not the northern cold but was genuinely cold.
He had not seen it.
She had not seen winter at Obsidian from the inside — she had seen it from the outside, riding in, the deep cold and the patient stone and the twelve-minute light on the eastern face. But she had not been there for a winter.
They were both learning the other's seasons.
---
The final twenty days of Sprint 6 had a specific quality.
Not rushed — the sprint was complete on the metrics, the scope had been delivered, the second-generation system phase 1 framework was approved and the cross-domain team was running. There was nothing left to deliver before the sprint closed.
But there was work to do, the ongoing kind that did not attach to sprint milestones. The advisory sessions. The knowledge map updates. The letters from Sanna about the seven remaining gaps and from Wren about the cross-pollination documentation and from Harlan about the eastern territory network meeting logistics.
Charlotte worked through all of it.
Kaelen worked beside her.
They had established, over the months, a working pattern that did not require negotiation: each of them brought their section of the work to the shared space and worked on it while the other worked on theirs. The shared space was the study. The sections of work were distinct. They converged at the junctions — the map, the sprint scope, the advisory notes that required both perspectives.
On the fourteenth day of the final twenty, Peder asked about the Obsidian winter data collection.
Charlotte was not in the room. She was running an advisory relay session.
Kaelen described the data collection protocol — the specific field observations, the timing, the equipment Wren had been adapting for the boundary shift monitoring. Peder listened and asked two questions. Both questions showed that he had been reading the field indicator documentation carefully enough to understand the northern methodology's differences from the southern one.
Kaelen reported this to Charlotte afterward.
"He asked the right questions," he said.
"Yes," she said. "He always does."
"He was reading the northern documentation," he said.
"Yes," she said. "He has been reading everything I bring back from Obsidian since Sprint 4."
Kaelen held her gaze.
"Why," he said.
"Because he understood," she said, "that what was happening at Obsidian was relevant to what was happening at Aurelia. He did not need to be told. He saw the connection and started reading."
He held her gaze.
"Peder," he said.
"Yes," she said.
He held her gaze.
"He was the first person you asked," he said.
"Yes," she said.
"And now he is reading the Obsidian documentation," he said.
"Yes," she said.
He was quiet for a moment.
"When I return in Sprint 7," he said, "I want to talk to him. Not about the methodology. About what he has observed across the two territories from reading both documentation sets."
Charlotte held his gaze.
"Yes," she said. "He will have observations."
"I know," he said. "That is why I want to ask."
She held his gaze.
"Peder will be pleased," she said.
"Good," he said.
She turned back to her work.
---
On the evening of the eighteenth day, they did not work.
The map was on the desk. The sprint documentation was filed. The advisory notes were current. There was nothing left that required the evening.
They sat in the back courtyard with Calla's summer vintage — the second bottle, the one that had been waiting for another occasion.
The summer evening was doing what it did.
"What does winter at Aurelia look like," Kaelen said.
Charlotte looked at him.
"You said it correctly," she said. "The pronunciation."
"Yes," he said. "I have been practicing."
She held his gaze.
"You have been learning Aurelia pronunciation," she said.
"I have been reading the implementation documents since Sprint 1," he said. "The language came with the reading."
Charlotte looked at the courtyard wall.
"Aurelia in winter," she said.
"Yes," he said. "What does it look like."
She thought about this.
"The trees will be bare," she said. "The light will be lower — the angle changes in October and by December it is the low winter light, the same principle as the Obsidian light but from a different direction." She paused. "The workshop will be warmer because the contrast with the outside is greater. The smoke from the heating elements will be thicker. Aldric will put extra cushions on the courtyard bench."
He held her gaze.
"Extra cushions," he said.
"Every year," she said. "He does it without being asked."
"Because he knows," he said.
"Yes," she said. "He knows."
He looked at the courtyard.
"I will be here for that," he said. "The extra cushions."
She held his gaze.
"Yes," she said. "In February."
"February," he said.
"Yes," she said.
He held her gaze.
"Tell me what February looks like here," he said.
She told him. The specific quality of February at Aurelia — not the deep winter of December and January, but the specific quality of a month that was winter still holding but beginning to consider otherwise. The light changed again in February. The workshop smoke was still thick but the contrast was less. The first green things appeared in the west courtyard — not flowers, just the specific promise of them.
He listened with the full attention she had come to know as his characteristic mode when something mattered to him.
"And at Obsidian in February," she said, "what is it like."
He told her. The ice on the eastern face was at its thickest — the deepest winter, the longest nights. The ward system ran at its highest load. The garrison kept the interior warm with the specific discipline of people who had learned that warmth in the deep cold was not a luxury but a functional requirement.
"And the twelve-minute light," she said.
"In February," he said, "the angle is slightly different. The light hits the eastern face higher — the sun is still very low, but it has moved from the December position. The illumination is shorter in February. Perhaps nine minutes."
Charlotte held his gaze.
"Nine minutes," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"You have been watching it for twenty years," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"And now you will watch it this winter and write to me about it," she said.
"Yes," he said. "And you will be here."
She held his gaze.
"And in April," she said.
"Yes," he said. "In April I come back."
She held his gaze.
"The April light on the eastern face," she said.
"Yes," he said. "Twelve minutes. Full illumination."
She held his gaze.
"I saw it once," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"I will see it again," she said.
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said. "You will."
They sat in the courtyard with the summer evening settling around them.
"By living in it with you," Charlotte said.
He held her gaze.
She held his.
"That is how we will do the winter," she said. "Both of us in our respective winters, writing about them. And then together in April."
"Yes," he said. "That is exactly how."
She held her gaze on the courtyard wall.
"The extra cushions will be on the bench when you arrive," she said.
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said. "I expect they will."
She picked up her glass.
"To the extra cushions," she said.
He held her gaze for a moment.
Then, with the specific quality that had developed over a year from adjacent-to-smile into the actual thing: "To the extra cushions."
They held their glasses.
The summer evening was warm.
---
On the morning of departure day, the team assembled at the main gate.
Not because Charlotte had asked them to. Not because Kaelen had arranged it. They were simply there when Charlotte came down, having apparently decided collectively that this was an occasion for which one turned up.
Peder was at the front, with the expression of someone who had decided that professional neutrality was insufficient for this particular morning.
Aldric was beside him, which was not unusual — Aldric was usually where the action was.
Tomas, Fen, Vane, Mara, Oskar, Brennan, Sera, two of the distribution staff, three of the Legion engineers.
Charlotte came through the gate and stopped.
She looked at them.
She looked at Kaelen, who was already at the gate with his escort and had apparently been informed — or had simply observed — that this was happening.
He was looking at the assembled team with the specific expression she had catalogued since approximately Sprint 3: the expression of someone whose model of what was possible was being updated in real time.
Peder said: "Safe travels, Grand Duke."
Kaelen held Peder's gaze.
"Thank you," he said.
He looked at the rest of them — each person, briefly, the specific attention of someone who saw who was there and recognized why.
He looked at Charlotte last.
She looked back.
He said, to the team — not to her specifically, to all of them: "The operation is in good hands."
Peder, without hesitation: "It always has been."
Kaelen looked at Charlotte.
She looked at him.
They did not say anything.
Nothing was required.
He turned his horse.
The escort moved.
Charlotte stood at the gate with the team around her and watched Kaelen and his escort move down the approach road, growing smaller, and then smaller still, and then gone.
The team stood for a moment.
Then Peder said, quietly: "The morning brief is at seven tomorrow."
"Yes," Charlotte said. "Seven o'clock."
"Sprint 7 scope items," Tomas said.
"Yes," Charlotte said. "Bring your section."
The team dispersed back to their work.
Charlotte stood at the gate for a moment longer.
The road was empty.
Sixty days.
She turned and walked back to the workshop.
The production floor was running. The output shelf held four elements now — secondary proof of concept, tertiary achievement, fifteen-point-one refinement, and the first seventh-design production element that had been added last week. All warm.
She checked them the way she checked them every morning.
All warm. All still exactly what they were supposed to be.
She picked up the secondary proof of concept.
Still warm. Still the specific consistency of something that worked and kept working, that had been working since the night she held it for thirty seconds before the planning started.
She set it back.
She went to her desk.
The knowledge map was open to section 12. The risk register was on the right side. The Sprint 7 scope document was in the center.
She picked up her pen.
She wrote in the risk register: *Day 1, Sprint 7. He left this morning. The team was at the gate. Peder said: it always has been.*
Below it: *Sixty days. The extra cushions will be on the bench.*
She set down the pen.
She looked at the study — the two chairs, the map, the desk, the hook near the door where his coat had been.
The hook was empty.
February.
She picked up the Sprint 7 scope document.
The workshop was warm.
She got back to work.
---
The first letter arrived three days after he left.
Not the operational relay — the other letter, the kind that came through the estate communication array flagged as personal correspondence.
Charlotte was at her desk when Aldric brought it. She set it beside the Sprint 7 scope document and finished the section she was reviewing before she opened it.
*Day three at Obsidian. The morning brief had nine contributions. Joris led the eastern ward training session. Sanna has six gaps remaining.*
*The route north passed through the transitional zone on day two. The perceptible field shift arrived at the usual twenty minutes before the measurable shift. I noted the time and will send it to Mara. Wren says she wants three more data points before she considers the propagation differential confirmed.*
*The fortress is cold. The deep cold has not started yet — that is December. This is the early cold, the specific quality of October at this latitude, which is colder than October at Aurelia but not yet the thing it becomes.*
*The study at Aurelia. I think about it sometimes. The two chairs. The map on the desk. The hook near the door.*
*The hook near the door.*
Charlotte read this twice.
She picked up her pen.
*Day four of Sprint 7. The morning brief was strong — Peder ran the noticing item with a contribution of his own, which he has not done before. He observed that the seventh design element produces a different warmth quality than the earlier designs. Not more heat — different distribution. He wanted it documented.*
*The Oskar boundary shift update: the combined northern-southern data is now confirming the seven-month timeline with high confidence. Mara is beginning the second-generation system phase 2 architecture. She says she needs the perceptible field shift data from your journey for the propagation model.*
*The study at night is the same. The map is on the desk. The two chairs. The hook near the door is empty.*
*Sixty days become fifty-seven.*
She sent the letter.
---
Sprint 7 found its rhythm within the first week.
The scope was larger than any previous sprint — the second-generation field indicator system phase 2, the advisory domain expansions, the regional knowledge-sharing network formalization, the Obsidian winter data integration, and the ongoing methodology documentation that Wren was producing from the Obsidian side.
Charlotte worked through it the way she had worked through every sprint: the morning brief, the activation sequences, the map updates, the advisory sessions. The team ran beside her with the specific efficiency of people who had been doing this for a year and knew their roles and were developing beyond them.
Fen's process documentation was complete by week two. All six design concepts, fully documented with the development process, the failures, the adjustments, the observations that had led from one design to the next. Harlan's network had requested copies. Two of the advisory domains had asked for a presentation session. Fen had agreed to both.
Charlotte told Kaelen about this in the weekly operational letter.
His reply: *Fen is presenting to Harlan's network. When I first arrived at Aurelia and watched the morning brief, she was placing a prototype on your desk without announcement to see if it would be received. She is now presenting to a regional network.* A pause, evident in the specific way he structured the next sentence. *I want you to know that I watched her do both. I was there for the first one.*
Charlotte read this three times.
She wrote back: *You were there for the first one. And the second. And the third, fourth, fifth, sixth. You were at the back of the room for all of them.*
His reply: *Yes. I was at the back of the room.*
---
On Sprint 7 day twenty, Peder came to Charlotte's study.
He had been doing this — coming to the study rather than waiting for after the brief — since approximately Sprint 5. She had not remarked on it. He came when he had something specific to say, said it, and left. The format was efficient and had, over months, produced some of the most important conversations she had about the operation.
He sat in the chair across from her.
"The second-generation system," he said.
"Yes," she said.
"Phase 2 architecture," he said. "Mara's framework."
"Yes," she said.
"I have been reading it," he said.
"Yes," she said.
"There is a section about the activation element's interaction with the field boundary," he said. "The way the element's frequency output affects the field's detection capacity."
"Yes," she said.
"I have been thinking about this for three weeks," he said. "The interaction is more complex than Mara's framework describes. The element does not just interact with the field — it modifies the field in the immediate vicinity of the element. Which means the system's detection capacity is affected by the placement of the elements relative to the boundary."
Charlotte held his gaze.
"Show me," she said.
He spent forty minutes walking her through it. The technical content was exact — he had been working through the implications systematically, the way he worked through everything.
By the end, Charlotte had three pages of notes and a significant revision to the phase 2 architecture.
"This changes the calibration protocol," she said.
"Yes," he said. "I think so."
"And the placement guidelines," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"How long have you been thinking about this," she said.
"Since Sprint 6 week three," he said. "When the combined northern-southern data suggested the propagation differential was real. I started reading the field physics documentation."
"You have been reading field physics documentation," she said.
"Yes," he said.
Charlotte held his gaze.
"For three weeks," she said.
"Yes," he said. "I wanted to be certain before I said anything."
She held his gaze.
"Peder," she said.
"Yes," she said.
"You have been the lead activation specialist at this operation since Sprint 1," she said. "You are now doing original research into the field physics underlying the second-generation system."
He held her gaze.
"Is that a problem," he said.
"No," she said. "It is exactly what should happen."
He held her gaze with the expression she had seen on his face since day two — the expression of someone who had been waiting for the right question for a long time and was still occasionally surprised that it kept coming.
"Good," he said.
He returned to his station.
Charlotte sent an immediate update to Mara.
Then she wrote to Kaelen.
*Day 20, Sprint 7. Peder has been doing original field physics research for three weeks. His analysis requires a significant revision to the second-generation system phase 2 architecture. He said he wanted to be certain before he said anything.*
His reply arrived the next morning: *He wanted to be certain before he said anything. He has been doing this since you asked him the first question on day two. He waits until he is certain and then he says the exactly correct thing.*
*Joris did the same thing with the micro-fracture mechanism. He kept the samples for five years until someone asked.*
*Some people are very patient with their certainty.*
Charlotte read this and thought about patience and certainty and the specific discipline of waiting until you were sure before you spoke.
She wrote back: *Yes. Some people keep it until someone arrives who can use it.*
She picked up her pen.
She opened the risk register.
She wrote: *Day 20, Sprint 7. Peder has been doing field physics research. He waited three weeks to be certain. He was right.*
Below it she wrote: *The operation keeps producing people who have been waiting to be asked. I do not think this will ever stop surprising me. I hope it does not.*
She closed the register.
The workshop was warm.
Forty days until February.
She got back to work.
You've reached the end of this chapter

Not the operational relay — the other letter, the kind that came through the estate communication array flagged as personal correspondence.
