Four things.
She had expected three — she had asked for three, had received three in every other exchange where the number had been specified, had come to understand that he was, whatever else he was, a precise and literal respondent to direct questions.
Four things, and the fourth one crossed out.
She stood at the reading table in the early morning light and read the three that were not crossed out — the north's winter, the library without music, the breakfasts always standing — and she read them with the specific attention she gave to things that were trying to tell her something more than their surface content. They were true things. Small, particular, the kind of detail that came from actual experience rather than from the construction of a plausible self. The library without music had stopped her entirely — she had read it and thought about a child looking for something that wasn't there and not being told why, and the image had arrived with a completeness that surprised her.
Then the fourth thing. Crossed out, but not completely.
*I did not think I would miss—*
She read those six words several times.
He had written them and then crossed them out and then not crossed them out enough. This was a choice. She was certain it was a choice — he was too precise, too controlled, too aware of exactly what he was doing for it to be an accident. He had written something and then obscured it partially and left the partial obscuring visible, which was a way of saying: I wrote this, and I am not ready to show you all of it, and I am also not willing to pretend I didn't write it.
She stood with those six words and thought about what came after the dash.
She did not try too hard to fill it in. That felt like a violation of something — he had drawn the line at the dash, and she could respect where he had drawn the line while still holding the existence of the line with care.
She made two cups of tea.
She wrote her three things while the shop was still closed, sitting at the reading table with the morning quiet around her. The coffee, she wrote first — specific, the flavor she had never found a local equivalent for, a detail that was true and personal and cost relatively little to give. The rain, she wrote second — she slept well in the rain, had always slept well in the rain, something about the sound of it that her nervous system had decided was safety before she had any say in the matter.
She sat with the pen for the third.
She had known, when she wrote the question, that the third one would be the one that mattered. The first two were the kind of true things you could share with anyone — particular enough to be genuine, small enough to be safe. The third one was where you either held back or you didn't.
She wrote: *I had not laughed — not really — from before I arrived until the morning I said the name Lulu and watched what your face did.*
She read it back.
She had named him. Not F. Vale, not the man in the moonlight, not the ambiguous you that she had been using for weeks. Him, specifically, identified by the name she had given him and the moment she was referring to and the face she had watched — the face she had no business referring to, strictly speaking, since she was not supposed to have seen his face.
She was past strictly speaking.
She set the pen down and looked at what she had written, all three things, and thought about three things that were true for him. The winter. The library. The breakfasts. The sixth words and the dash.
She added her own fourth thing, below the three, without planning to: *And the fourth thing, which I am also not crossing out: I don't know when I stopped being careful about this. I've been trying to identify the moment and I can't.*
She folded the paper and set it under the lamp.
The day had its ordinary texture. She opened the shop. Customers came. She sold books and answered questions and moved through the hours with the portion of her attention the shop required, and the rest of her attention was on Tomas's letter, which had arrived with the morning post and which she read in the back room on her lunch break.
He could do it. Two weeks, as she had requested. He needed more detail on the second person — specifically, something she had not included in her letters because she had not been sure it was safe to include it: a distinguishing physical feature that would make the documentation internally consistent, something that could be explained by a mundane history.
The eyes were the obvious answer and the impossible one. She could not put the eyes in writing — heterochromatic eyes were too distinctive, too memorable, the kind of detail that stuck in people's minds and got repeated.
She wrote back that afternoon, using the medical framing she had developed — a congenital condition affecting pigmentation, present from birth, documented in the northern provincial medical records as occurring in approximately one in eight thousand people. She gave Tomas the specific shade of each eye, phrased in the terminology of a medical assessment rather than the language of someone who had looked into them across a bookshop counter and found them difficult to look away from.
She sealed the letter.
She was aware, sealing it, that she was building a person on paper — a history, a documentation, a version of him that could exist in the world of official records. F. Vale, northern provinces, thirty years of age, congenital heterochromia, no listed family, occupation to be determined. She was giving him a life he had not asked for in a form he could not currently sign his name to.
She would tell him. She was not certain when or how, but she would tell him, because keeping it from him felt wrong in a specific and identifiable way, and she had learned to pay attention to that feeling.
Evening. She closed the shop and made dinner and sat at the reading table and thought about what to write.
The paper with her three things and the fourth thing was still under the lamp. She had left it there for him to find. Above it was his response from last night, which she had read four times and which she was still sitting with — the image of him at a reading table she hadn't known existed, nineteen years old, keeping the pages of a book whose binding had failed.
She thought about what she actually wanted to know.
This was a question she had been avoiding, in a general sense, since she had started leaving things on the reading table — she had been careful to ask things that were real without being the most real thing, questions that opened doors without requiring her to walk through them first. She had been waiting for him to walk through them, and he had been doing that, carefully and incrementally, and she had been receiving what he gave and giving back in proportion.
But there was a question she had been holding since the very beginning — since the poem on page forty-one, since the morning she had understood who and what he was and had chosen not to ask — that was the question underneath all the other questions.
She wrote it.
*What do you want? Not what you need to do. Not what the situation requires. If all of it — the curse, the Church, the empire — if all of it resolved tomorrow and you could choose anything: what would you want?*
She looked at the question.
It was, she recognized, the question she would also have to answer. She had written it for him, but she had also written it for herself, and the fact that she could not answer it with certainty was information she had been avoiding.
She folded the paper and set it on the table.
She went to the chair.
She did not sleep for a long time. She lay in the chair and listened to the fire and thought about the question she had asked and the question it asked back, and at some point, in the specific honesty of late-night tiredness, she admitted to herself that she could identify approximately when she had stopped being careful.
It was the morning she had found the flowers.
She had put them in water.
That had been the moment — not a decision, not a conscious choice, just her hands finding a glass and filling it and placing the stems in it because they were alive and she wanted them to stay that way. That had been the moment she had stopped performing not-caring and simply stopped caring about not-caring.
In the morning, his response was longer than any of the previous ones.
She read it standing at the reading table, in the early morning light, without making tea first, without doing anything first.
He had answered her question — the what do you want question — in three parts. The first part was: *I have not been asked this question by anyone including myself in a very long time and I find I need more time with it than one night provides.* The second part was: *What I know so far is that it is not what I would have said three months ago.* The third part was the one she stood with longest: *Three months ago I would have said the thing I wanted was to not be where I was. I am no longer certain that is the same as wanting to be somewhere specific. I think they are different things and I think I am in the process of learning the difference.*
Below those three parts, a question: *The same question back to you.*
She stood at the reading table and looked at those words and felt the specific quality of being asked something you had just asked someone else — the way it arrived differently when it was directed at you, the way the words that had felt manageable as questions became considerably less manageable as things requiring answers.
She wrote: *I'm also still determining. But I think I know more of it than I did a month ago.*
She set the pen down.
She looked at Lulu, who had moved to the window position in the early morning and was watching the street with his usual focused attention.
She said, to the shop in general: "Good morning."
He turned his head toward her briefly. Then he turned back to the window.
She went to make tea.
Two cups, automatically, without thinking about it, her hands knowing the routine before her mind had caught up to it.
The morning was ordinary. The shop opened. Customers came. She sold books.
She was, she found, unusually calm — the specific calm of someone who has asked a question they have been avoiding and has not yet received an answer but has survived the asking, which turns out to be the harder part.
The letter to Tomas sat by the door, waiting to be posted.
F. Vale's documentation was in progress.
She had asked what he wanted and he had answered honestly and asked her the same question and she had answered honestly and neither of them had collapsed from the directness of it.
She thought: two years ago I would not have believed I could do this.
She thought: I'm not sure I could have, two years ago.
She shelved a new arrival — a collection of northern folk songs, which she had ordered before she had any reason to order it and which had arrived as if on a schedule she hadn't set — and she placed it on the shelf and ran her finger along the spine and thought about a library that had no music section and a man who had noticed the absence early.
She went to the counter.
The day continued.
