Nine days.
She had written it on the small calendar she kept behind the counter — not a mark, not a number, just a line through the date, the way she tracked inventory deadlines and bill payments and the ordinary administrative rhythm of running a shop. She had been tracking the documentation deadline the same way, one line per day, and this morning when she drew the line she had noticed that she was not thinking about the deadline with the specific weight of dread that she had been carrying since Brennan's first visit.
She was thinking about it with something closer to anticipation.
She stood at the counter with the pen still in her hand and examined this carefully, the way she examined things she wanted to understand accurately. The documentation arriving meant options — more specifically, it meant options for two people rather than one, which meant the situation had a different shape than the situation she had been managing alone for two years. The anticipation was about the shape of the thing, she told herself. About having more room to maneuver.
She put the pen away and did not examine the fact that she had thought the word two before she had thought the word options.
The day was ordinary. She sold books and answered questions and helped a young woman find something appropriate for her father's birthday, and she moved through the hours with the portion of herself the shop required and the rest of herself was thinking, underneath, about the night.
She had decided that morning. Not dramatically, not with a specific moment of decision — she had simply known, waking up, that she was not going to pretend tonight.
The trăng tròn was three days after the last one. She had been counting those too, she realized, with a different kind of attention than she counted inventory deadlines.
At nine she closed the shop and made tea — two cups, as she had been doing, setting one on the reading table with the lamp burning low beside it. Then she did not go to the chair.
She crossed to the far side of the room and sat down on the floor with her back against the bookshelf that ran along the wall opposite the reading table. She pulled her knees up and held her cup in both hands and looked at the room from this angle, which was different from the chair angle, lower and more level, the room arranged differently from here.
She waited.
The fire ticked in the grate. Outside, Oakhaven was doing what it did at this hour — settling into the particular quiet of a town that had collectively decided to be finished with the day. The fog was coming down from the hills. A cart went by on the street outside, late, its wheels on the cobblestones loud in the stillness.
Then the stillness changed.
She had heard it before — twice — but always from the chair, always through the filter of performed sleep. Hearing it awake, without that filter, was different. The quality of the sound was different. The presence of it — the specific physical reality of something happening in the room that she had only ever been adjacent to before — arrived with a weight she had not anticipated.
She looked at her tea.
She did not look across the room.
This was a choice she had made in advance: she was going to be here, present and not pretending, and she was not going to look. Looking felt like a line she had not been invited to cross, and she had a long-established practice of not crossing lines she hadn't been invited to. She would be here. That was enough. That was the thing she had decided to do.
The sounds settled into silence.
Then footsteps — the particular weight and rhythm of them, which she had been hearing for three weeks in the translation of furniture moved and books shelved and tea cups rinsed, but had never heard as footsteps before, as the sound of a specific person walking across a specific floor. She heard him cross to the reading table. She heard the chair. She heard the teacup lifted.
She listened to him drink tea in the dark.
Neither of them said anything.
Neither of them needed to.
She sat on the floor with her own cup and listened to him exist in the room with her — the sound of him setting the cup down, the sound of a book being opened, the particular quality of silence that was someone reading rather than someone simply being still. She had catalogued that quality of silence for three weeks without knowing she was cataloguing it, and hearing it now, knowingly, was like recognizing a piece of music you had heard a hundred times without knowing its name.
An hour passed. Perhaps more. She had stopped tracking time with any precision.
Then the sounds of the street changed — a particular footfall, wrong tempo, stopping in front of the shop. She heard him stop reading before she had fully registered the sound herself. The creak of the chair. Footsteps, quiet and deliberate, toward the window.
Silence.
The footfall outside resumed, continued down the street, faded.
His footsteps returned to the table.
She had not moved. She had sat on the floor with her cup — empty now, long cold — and listened, and felt, and not examined what she was feeling because examining it would have required words she wasn't sure she had yet.
More time passed.
At some point she was aware that she was tired, the specific tiredness of someone who had been very present for a long time and whose body was beginning to request a different state. She shifted slightly against the bookshelf and resettled and did not go to the chair, because going to the chair felt like ending something she wasn't ready to end.
Then his footsteps came toward her side of the room.
They stopped.
He was near the chair — she could tell from the sound, from the specific location of the stillness. Near her chair, which was between the reading table and where she was sitting. He stopped there, and she heard nothing, and she understood that he was standing next to her chair in the dark, and she kept her eyes on her empty cup and did not look up, because looking up would require both of them to acknowledge something neither of them had decided to acknowledge yet.
The stillness lasted for what felt like a long time.
Then his footsteps moved back toward the reading table.
She breathed.
She sat on the floor and breathed and thought: he stood next to my chair in the dark, and he did nothing, and I will not ask about it, and I will not forget it.
Some time later — she could not have said how much later — a piece of paper slid across the floor toward her, pushed from the direction of the reading table, traveling the distance between them in the particular way of something sent rather than placed.
She picked it up.
She had to move closer to the small lamp by the door to read it — it was dimmer than the reading table lamp but enough. The handwriting was large and careful, the handwriting she had come to recognize as his nighttime handwriting, the one that had more room in it than his daytime wolf-form writing.
*What do you miss most? Not the things. The feelings.*
She read it standing by the door lamp with the question in her hands and felt it arrive in the specific way that good questions arrived — not with an answer ready, but with a recognition that the answer existed and mattered and was going to require honesty to reach.
She went back to her position against the bookshelf and sat with the question for the rest of the night.
At half past two she wrote her answer on a fresh sheet from the reading table, bringing it back to her corner, writing in the dim light: *The feeling of being known without having to explain myself first. I didn't have it often. I miss it more than I expected to miss something I barely had.*
She folded the paper and held it.
Then she looked up.
It was the first time she had looked across the room all night. The reading table was there, lamp burning, a figure she could not see clearly in the shadows beyond the lamp's reach. She knew he was there. She had known all night.
She set the paper on the floor and slid it toward the table.
She heard him pick it up.
She looked back down at her hands and sat with the specific quality of having said something true to someone who was going to receive it, which was a quality she had almost forgotten existed and which felt, even now, dangerous in the way that things you wanted felt dangerous when you had spent a long time not wanting things.
The fire burned lower.
The fog deepened outside.
She sat on the floor of her bookshop in the dark and did not sleep and did not pretend and was, for the first time in a very long time, simply present in a room with another person, both of them awake, both of them aware, neither of them requiring anything from the other except exactly this.
It was, she found, enough.
It was, she found, more than enough.
She did not examine what that meant.
But she sat with it until the quality of the dark outside the window began, very slowly, to change.
