She had known it was a trăng tròn night.
She had known it when she said *I think it's time* this morning, and she had known it when she came home with the documentation and sat down on the floor and said it again. She had known it and had sat down anyway, which was, she thought, perhaps the most honest thing she had done in the past six weeks — not the bravest, but the most honest. The most deliberately chosen.
She watched his expression change.
She had not watched before — not directly, not in the way of actually seeing rather than being peripherally aware. She had heard it, had been present for it, had felt its cost in the quality of the sounds it made and the specific exhaustion in his stillness afterward. But she had always given him the privacy of not looking, because looking had felt like a line she had not been invited to cross.
She had been invited, she thought, some time ago. She had simply been slow to understand the invitation.
She looked at the floor in front of her instead of at him — not away, but down, at the worn wood of the floor she had swept every morning for two years and three months and however many days. She listened to the sounds she had learned to recognize and she breathed carefully and she said, into the room: "I'm staying. I'm not going anywhere."
The sounds stopped.
Silence.
And then, across the floor from her, the quality of the air changed.
She looked up.
The man sitting on the floor of her bookshop was not a stranger. That was the first thing she registered — not his appearance, not the silver hair or the mismatched eyes or the particular set of his shoulders, but the specific quality of his presence, which she recognized. She had been in a room with this presence for six weeks. She knew how it occupied space. She knew the specific quality of his attention, the way his stillness had weight, the particular manner in which he held himself when he was thinking.
She knew him.
The knowledge arrived not as a revelation but as a confirmation — the specific satisfaction of a thing clicking into place that had been almost-in-place for a long time.
He was looking at her.
She looked back.
Neither of them moved. The fire ticked in the grate. The fog pressed against the windows. The shop held its silence in the specific way it held silence at this hour — full rather than empty, the silence of a contained space rather than a vacant one.
She did not know how long they sat there. Long enough that the fire shifted and the quality of the light changed slightly, the shadows moving in the way shadows moved when the source of light changed.
Then he said: "Hello."
One word.
She had not prepared herself for his voice. She had prepared herself, in her careful way, for a great many things — for the reality of him as a person rather than a wolf, for the specific awkwardness of a first direct conversation after six weeks of paper-mediated exchange, for the possibility that the translation from writing to speaking might lose something in transit. She had not prepared herself for his voice.
It was, she thought, entirely consistent with everything she had learned about him. Low, deliberate, with the specific quality of someone who had learned to use words carefully because he understood that words had consequences. It contained, in a single syllable, more layers than most people managed in paragraphs.
She said: "Hello."
And then she had to look away for a moment — not away from him, just slightly to the side, at the middle distance between them — because there was too much happening at once and she needed a second to sort through it. The papers in the drawer. The bài thơ on page forty-one. The flowers in the glass of water. The *Then I am staying.* All of it was here now, in the room, attached to a person, and the person was sitting on her floor looking at her with those mismatched eyes and she needed a moment.
She took it.
Then she looked back.
He had not moved. He was giving her the room — she recognized it, the specific patience of someone who understood that she needed time and was not going to fill the time with anything that would require her to manage it.
She said: "F. Vale."
A breath. Then: "What's your real name?"
He was quiet for a moment. Not hesitating — considering, which was different, the difference between uncertainty and deliberateness.
Then: "Fenrir."
Just that. No title, no family name, no qualifier. Simply the name, offered without the apparatus that usually surrounded it.
She said it back, quietly, testing the shape of it: "Fenrir."
He looked at her with an expression she was still learning to read — there were more layers available now, in person, than there had been in the handwriting on the papers, and she was recalibrating in real time. But she recognized the quality of what was in it. She had seen it in his writing when he had written things that cost him something to write.
She said: "I've been calling you Lulu for six weeks."
The corner of his mouth moved. Not quite a smile — more the precursor to one, the movement that happened in the moment before a person allowed themselves to smile. She had not seen that before. She filed it carefully.
"I am aware," he said.
"And you never — " She stopped. "You could have told me. Even through the papers. You could have written it."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you?"
He considered this with the same deliberateness he had considered giving her his name. "Because F. Vale was a name you chose. It felt — " A pause. "It felt like something I was not ready to replace."
She sat with that for a moment.
She thought about the F and what it stood for and the specific care with which she had chosen it, and she thought about him receiving that choice and deciding to let it stand rather than replacing it with the name he'd been given, and she thought about what that said about how he understood what the name meant.
She said: "You can be both. F. Vale on paper. Fenrir here."
He looked at her.
"If you want," she added.
"I want," he said. Simply, without qualification.
They talked.
She was not sure, afterward, how to characterize what it was like — the first real conversation, face to face, after six weeks of paper-mediated exchange. It was different in the ways she had expected: the immediacy of it, the inability to revise before speaking, the way his expressions arrived alongside his words rather than being inferred from them afterward. But it was also continuous with the papers in a way she had not expected, as though the months of careful written exchange had been a kind of foundation-laying, and this was simply the structure going up on the foundation that was already there.
They talked about the documentation — the practical realities of what F. Vale's papers contained and what they allowed. They talked about the route C and the timing of the departure. And then, somewhere in the middle of these practical things, the conversation moved in the way that conversations moved when both people were genuinely present and not performing presence, and they were talking about other things — the border encampment and the book with the failed binding, the poetry collection and the first winter, the specific quality of what it felt like to build a life in a place that had not been planned, and whether a life built without planning was more or less a life than one that had been.
He said, at some point: "I have thought, for most of my life, that the things that happened to me were the life. The events, the campaigns, the — " He paused. "The losses. I thought that was what a life was made of."
She waited.
"I think I was wrong," he said. "I think a life is also made of the things you notice. The specific things that catch your attention in a particular room at a particular time." A pause. "I have been noticing things I did not used to notice."
She said, quietly: "What kind of things?"
He looked at her with the full weight of those mismatched eyes and said: "You know what kind of things."
She did.
At some point — she could not have said when, exactly — she became aware that the quality of the dark outside had changed, that they were in the last portion of the night rather than the middle of it. She was tired in the specific way of someone who had been very present for a long time, and she recognized the feeling as the same feeling she'd had on the floor of the shop the night of the third trăng tròn.
She lay down.
Not in the chair. On the floor, where she was sitting, the way she had done then. She lay down and looked at the ceiling and said: "I'm going to sleep here."
"I know," he said.
She closed her eyes.
She heard, not long after, the transformation — the specific sounds of it, which she now knew from every angle, from every distance. And then warmth, close, the particular warmth of him settling beside her.
She reached out without opening her eyes.
Her hand found his fur — his fur, Lulu's fur, Fenrir's fur, the fur of the person she had been talking to all night — and she held it, and she felt him still beneath her hand, and she slept.
In the morning, the light was gold through the frost-edged window, and she was lying on the floor of her bookshop with her hand in the fur of the wolf who was also the man who was also the person who had said *Then I am staying* and meant it, and she was, against all reasonable expectation, entirely at peace.
She said, into the morning: "Good morning, Fenrir."
The wolf beside her exhaled slowly.
She took that as a good morning back.
