She woke to the sound of him breathing through the wall.
The rooms were adjacent — she had noticed the thinness of the partition when she had gone to bed, the specific quality of an old building whose divisions between spaces were more symbolic than acoustic. She had noticed and had not minded, because the sound of him breathing through a wall was, she was finding, one of the more reliable ways to wake up.
She lay in the inn's adequate bed and looked at the ceiling and felt the specific quality of the morning — the third one since they had spoken in the waystation, the first one without a distance between them that needed crossing.
They had eaten dinner together last night without ceremony: food, the practical exchange of information about their respective three days, the easy movement back into the shared rhythm they had been developing for months. She had told him about the woman on the road and the word *yes.* He had told her about the bookshop in the village and standing outside it for longer than necessary. They had sat with both of these things for a while and then had gone to their separate rooms in the way that people who were figuring out what they were doing went to separate rooms — not because they were obligated to but because the question of what else was available had not yet been answered and they were not rushing the answer.
She was not rushing the answer.
She got up and washed and went downstairs, and he was already there — at the table by the window, tea in front of him, the specific quality of someone who had been there for a while and was settled rather than waiting. He looked up when she came in and the expression on his face was the expression she had been cataloguing for months: the one that was only partially visible in the lamplight and was entirely visible in the full morning, the one that had no buffer in it.
She sat down across from him.
She ordered tea.
They ate breakfast in the specific easy silence of people who had been through something together and were resting in the aftermath of it. The inn's common room was doing its morning things around them — other travelers, the landlord's family beginning the day's work, the general low hum of a building in use. None of it required their attention.
Fenrir said, between a piece of bread and the consideration of the second piece: "I have been thinking about going back."
She looked at him.
"Not now," he said. "Not soon. But I have been thinking about the shape of it. What it would require."
"Tell me," she said.
He told her.
He laid it out with the clarity of someone who had been thinking about something for a long time and had arrived at a sufficient level of organization to articulate it: the curse needed to be addressed at its source, which meant the Hoàng huynh and the Church's involvement needed to be confronted. That confrontation required evidence — not force, not his force alone, which would be insufficient and would prove nothing that needed proving. It required evidence of the conspiracy that had been built against him, and it required witnesses, and it required allies with standing in the imperial system.
Building those things took time.
"Six months," he said. "Possibly a year. Before the confrontation is viable."
She listened to all of it. She did the thing she did — received the information completely before responding, allowed it to settle into the full shape it needed to settle into before she said anything about it.
Then she said: "What do we do in the meantime?"
He looked at her.
She held his gaze and let the question be what it was: not about strategy, not about logistics, not about any of the practical questions that were also real questions. About life. About the specific shape of the next several months as something that was not just the interval between now and the confrontation but was itself a time to be inhabited.
"I don't know," he said.
She waited.
"That is a new condition for me," he said. "Not knowing what comes next because of a plan's requirements. Not knowing because — " He paused, finding the word. "Because the territory is new."
She thought about that.
She thought about the two years she had spent in Oakhaven, which had been, in retrospect, not a plan but an avoidance of planning — a deliberate shrinking of the future to the dimensions of a manageable present, because the future had seemed, from the inside of the wound, too large and too dangerous to engage with.
She had not been living in Oakhaven.
She had been waiting for the coast to be clear.
"I have some experience with not knowing what comes next," she said. "I spent two years in it. I was quite organized about not knowing."
He looked at her with the expression that was not quite a smile.
"And?" he said.
"And it worked," she said. "In the specific way that doing nothing always works — you're still alive at the end of it. But I think I want something different now."
"Different how?"
She thought about it honestly.
"I want to actually be somewhere," she said. "Not just located somewhere. I want to be somewhere in the way that means — noticing it. Choosing it. Doing things in it that matter to me." She paused. "I had that in Oakhaven, at the end. That's what I'm taking from it, I think. Not the shop itself. The — knowing how to do that."
He was quiet for a moment.
"I don't know how to do that," he said.
"I know," she said. "But you've been learning things you don't know how to do for two months and you've been doing reasonably well."
The corner of his mouth moved.
"Reasonably well," he said.
"It's an honest assessment."
"It consistently is."
She looked at him across the table in the morning light of the inn and thought about what they were deciding — not consciously, not formally, but in the way that the decisions that mattered were usually made, through the accumulation of small choices that gradually resolved into a direction.
"We go north," she said. "Further from the Church network. Find somewhere quiet enough to have time. Build whatever needs to be built before you can go back." She paused. "Together."
He held her gaze.
"Together," he said.
They paid for breakfast and went upstairs to pack their rooms. The packing took ten minutes — they had both traveled light and had not acquired anything in Harwick. She checked the documentation packet in her bag, checked the provisions, checked the map against the route she had been considering.
He appeared in the doorway of her room, his bag over his shoulder, and looked at her looking at the map.
"Ready?" he said.
She folded the map and put it away.
She picked up her bag.
"One thing first," she said.
She crossed the room and she did the thing she had been thinking about since the waystation, since the morning of the question and the answer, since she had walked away on a road and not looked back and arrived here in one piece. She crossed the room and she stood in front of him and she took his face in her hands — both hands, the specific deliberateness of someone who had decided to do something and was doing it — and she kissed him.
It was not a dramatic kiss. It was not the kiss of a story reaching its climax. It was the kiss of two people who had been moving toward each other for months through paper and poetry and wildflowers and three words about chairs in the dark, and had finally arrived at the simple physical fact of it, and the simple physical fact was sufficient.
When she stepped back he was looking at her with an expression she had not seen before — she had catalogued a great many of his expressions over months of paying attention and this was a new entry, something she did not have a word for yet and did not need to have a word for yet, something that existed in the space between astonishment and something much quieter and more certain than astonishment.
She looked at him.
"Okay," she said.
"Yes," he said.
They went downstairs.
They walked out into the morning.
The road north was clear and the sky was pale blue and the world was doing what the world did after significant weather: simply being itself, clean and quiet and full of the specific ordinariness of things that had endured.
She walked beside him.
He walked beside her.
The distance to the left was occupied.
She thought: I don't know what the ending looks like. I don't know what a year from now looks like, or what the confrontation looks like, or what comes after the confrontation. I don't know what it looks like to build something instead of maintain something, or to choose instead of simply persist.
She thought: I know who I'm figuring it out with.
She thought: that's enough to start.
