Aurelia agreed to speak with Elowen.
She said yes with a promptness that suggested she had been expecting the request, which Valerius noted and filed alongside the other things he had been noting and filing. He did not ask her about this. He told her Elowen was a pharmacist, a friend of his, and that she had professional concerns she wanted to address directly, and Aurelia said: I know who she is. Tomorrow morning, early, before the session.
He did not ask how she knew.
He arrived at the cathedral the next morning at his usual time, which was not early — he had considered arriving early and had decided against it on the grounds that whatever Aurelia and Elowen said to each other was their conversation, not his, and that positioning himself to observe it would be a violation of something he had not yet named but could feel the shape of.
Aurelia was alone when he arrived. The morning practice that she usually transitioned out of when he appeared was absent — she was sitting on the altar steps, her hands in her lap, the left one with its swollen joints resting slightly differently than the right, and she looked, for a moment before she heard him come in, like someone who had recently been in a conversation that had required something from her.
Then she heard him, and the expression resolved, and she said: you are exactly on time.
I am always on time, he said.
Yes, she said. I find it both reliable and occasionally inconvenient.
He set down the case and sat on the altar steps at the established distance. She was looking at the cherry trees, not at him, and the quality of her attention was internal rather than focused on anything in the cathedral specifically.
He waited.
She came this morning, Aurelia said, after a while.
I know. I told you she would.
She is thorough. Aurelia said this with a quality that was not quite admiration and not quite wariness — something in between, the assessment of one professional for another. She had done research before she came. Medical texts, historical records, possibly the same archive materials you found.
He said nothing.
She asked me questions, Aurelia continued. Good questions. The kind that demonstrated she already knew most of the answers and was looking for confirmation rather than information. She paused. I told her the truth.
All of it?
Enough of it. She looked at him then, briefly. She deserved enough of it. She cares about you in a way that is — she stopped, and the pause was not calculated, it was genuine, a moment of arriving at something and deciding how to say it. It is not a simple kind of caring. It deserves honesty.
He thought about Elowen — about two years of tonics and careful visits and the specific quality of attention she brought to every conversation he had ever had with her. He thought about what it cost her, probably, to come here. To look at Aurelia with her pharmacist's eyes and do the math.
What did she say, he asked. When you told her.
She was quiet for a moment. She asked if you knew. I said not fully. She asked if I intended to tell you. I said — she paused. I said not yet.
Not yet, he repeated.
After the competition. I want — she stopped and started again, and the second start was different from the first, slower, more careful, the quality of someone navigating toward something true rather than something manageable. I want this to still be what it has been, for the competition. For the final. I know that is — she exhaled briefly. I know what I am asking.
He looked at her profile. The amber eyes on the cherry trees, the honey-gold hair lit by the cold morning light coming through the east gaps, the particular way she held herself when she was not performing — less angled outward, more quietly contained, the difference between a lantern and a fire.
All right, he said.
She turned to look at him. The expression she was wearing was not the performed one. It was the one underneath — the tired one, the one he had learned to recognize as her actual face when she was not spending energy on its management. It was not unhappy. It was just very, very tired, in the way of someone who had been carrying something alone for a long time.
Elowen offered to help, she said. With the preparation. She has access to compounds I have not been able to obtain independently, and she believes she can slow the progression rate.
Is she right?
Possibly. She is — very good. Better than the practitioners I found in the first months. She said it with the honest assessment she brought to technical questions, the part of her that was precise and evidence-based regardless of what the subject matter was. I told her I would accept her help.
Good, he said.
She looked at him for a moment. He was aware that this response was not what she had expected — not the silence or the careful neutrality she had probably prepared for, but the direct, unqualified good of someone who was relieved by the information.
Good, he said again, because it was the right word and he did not have a better one.
She looked away. Her left hand was still in her lap, the joints visibly different from the right, and he did not look at it and she did not move it, and they sat in the cathedral in its morning quiet for a while without speaking.
The cherry trees were doing the thing they did in the mornings: the slow continuous pulse, the breathing-alongside quality rather than the active response of the afternoon sessions. The blossoms drifted in the specific unhurried way of things that had been falling for centuries and had no reason to rush.
He thought about his mother's concerto, which he had read three times since taking it from the drawer. He thought about what she had been trying to say and what she had not finished saying and what it meant that she had not finished.
He thought about not yet and what it was that came after.
The session when it began was quiet — both of them finding the work without the usual preliminary discussion, Aetheris warm from the first bar, the arrangement moving through its structure with the coherence of something that had been practiced past the point of effort into the territory of knowledge. They ran the full piece twice and then the third movement alone, and when they stopped the cherry blossoms were active around them in the cathedral's good quiet, and neither of them said anything for a while.
Then she said, without prelude: my name is Lysandra.
He was quiet for a moment.
Lysandra Vespera, she said. That is my name. The other is — the other is the name I use in places where my real name is a problem.
He turned the name over in his mind. Lysandra. It fit her in the way that names fit people when they are the right ones — not dramatically, not with the sudden click of revelation, but with the quiet rightness of a note resolving to its tonic.
Lysandra, he said.
She looked at him with an expression he had not seen before. Not performed, not managed, not the tired face or the real smile or the amber-eyes reading him. Something more open than any of those. Something that was simply present, without the framework she usually maintained around her presence.
Yes, she said.
He nodded once. Then he picked up the bow.
From the beginning, he said. One more time.
She moved to her opening position, and the cherry trees responded to her movement with their usual luminescent drift, and the morning light came through the east gaps in its particular winter angle, and she danced under her own name for the first time in three months while he played, and the cathedral held them both in its centuries-old silence as if it had been built for exactly this.
