He did not plan to go.
This was not entirely true — he had been aware, since leaving the reception, of a quality of restlessness that he recognized from the early weeks of the arrangement, the kind that resolved itself by moving toward a specific location rather than away from a general discomfort. He had identified the location and told himself he would not go there at this hour and had gone to the manor and made himself tea and sat at the writing desk and worked on the concerto for two hours, and at the end of the two hours the restlessness was still present and the location was still specific and he had put on his coat and gone.
The lower quarter at midnight was the same as it had always been — the narrow streets, the oil lanterns at longer intervals than the crystal-lit upper city, the canal smell, the deep quiet of a part of the city that worked early and slept accordingly. He knew the route to the cathedral by heart now, could have walked it without sight, the specific textures of the cobblestones and the turns and the gradual shift in the quality of the air as the accumulated Resonance of the site began to make itself felt.
He saw the light before he reached the entrance.
The cherry blossom luminescence was visible from the street — a soft cold glow through the gaps in the old stone walls, not the bright active pulse of a full session but the steadier, deeper light of the trees in their non-reactive state, the ambient glow they maintained regardless of what was happening in the nave. He had come to know the difference between these states. What he was seeing now was the deeper one, which meant she was here but not producing the kind of Cadence interaction that drove the reactive pulse.
He stopped at the entrance.
She was in the center of the nave, beneath the largest of the three cherry trees, and she was moving — but not in any pattern he had seen in their sessions. Not the competition piece, not the technical practice sequences, not even the personal morning practice that he had observed enough of to recognize its general shape. This was something else entirely.
He stood in the entrance and watched.
The movement was slow. Not slow in the way of a warm-up or a cool-down — slow in the way of something that was not trying to go anywhere, that was complete at each point of its execution rather than building toward a conclusion. Her arms described long continuous arcs that he had no analytical framework for, the transitions between positions unlike anything in the dance vocabulary he had absorbed over weeks of watching her work. Her feet moved with extreme precision but not the precision of technique — the precision of ritual, of something that had to be done exactly right because the exactness was part of what it was doing.
The cherry trees were responding differently than he had ever seen them respond.
Not the reactive pulse of sessions. Not the passive ambient glow. Something between the two and beyond both: a call-and-response, the trees' luminescence shifting in direct correspondence with her movement — brightening when her arms opened, dimming when they closed, the three trees responding not uniformly but in sequence, as if she were addressing them individually and each was answering in turn.
He had read about this. He had read about it in the most obscure of the historical texts, the ones that had survived in the lower quarter archive because they were too old and too specialized to have been included in the Academy's edited collections. Communion Dancing. The ceremonial practice of the ambient Cadence traditions — the use of Weave-Dancing not for performance or for Cadence Manipulation but for communication with the accumulated Resonance of a site, the relationship between practitioner and place maintained through repeated ritual contact over generations.
She was maintaining a relationship with the cathedral.
With the Resonance that her people had accumulated here over how many generations he could not know. With whatever remained of them in the stones and the roots of the cherry trees and the specific quality of the air in this space. She was talking to them, in the only language that remained to her, alone at midnight, because there was no one else left who knew the language.
He did not move. He did not breathe, or breathed very shallowly.
She continued for a long time — he lost track of how long, which happened rarely. The movement changed character gradually, the wide arcs becoming smaller, more contained, the response from the trees shifting from the call-and-response pattern to something quieter, both participants settling toward stillness. He watched the transition and understood it as what it was: the end of a conversation. The point where everything that needed to be said had been said and what remained was the quality of having said it.
She sat down.
Not fell — sat, with intention, the controlled lowering of someone who had reached the end of something and was choosing to be still rather than being compelled to it. She sat at the base of the central cherry tree with her back against its trunk, her legs extended in front of her, and she tipped her head back against the bark and closed her eyes.
The trees were very still around her. The blossoms fell in the slow unhurried way of things that had been falling for longer than anyone now living could remember.
Her face, in that stillness, was — he did not have a word for it. He had words for the faces she showed him: the performance face, the working face, the real face he had learned to find behind the others. This was none of those. This was the face she had when there was no one to show a face to. Private in the way of things that do not know they are being observed.
Tired. Not the tired of a day or a week. The tired of something much longer than that.
And, beneath the tired, something else — something that surprised him, because he had not expected to see it and did not have a name for it either. A quality of — peace, perhaps. Or something adjacent to peace. The expression of someone who has done what they came to do and is resting in the aftermath of it.
The amber was present even now, even in the dark, in the low light of resting cherry trees. It was always present here. He had come to understand that.
He did not know how long he had been standing in the entrance. Long enough for the cold to have reached his hands through his gloves. Long enough for the quality of the silence to have shifted from the ritual silence of the communion dancing to the ordinary silence of two people in the same space, one of them asleep or near to it.
He took one step back.
You should sleep, Valerius.
Her voice was soft. Not the voice she used in sessions, not the voice she used in performance. The voice she used at midnight when she had been talking to her people's ghosts and was too tired to manage anything else.
He stopped.
She had not opened her eyes. Her head was still back against the bark of the cherry tree, her face tilted up toward the dark canopy above her.
How long have you been there? he asked.
Long enough. She finally opened her eyes and looked at him across the nave. There was no surprise in her face. There was, he thought, something closer to relief — the particular relief of a thing no longer needing to be hidden. I knew you were there when you arrived.
You did not stop.
No, she said. She looked back up at the cherry trees above her. I did not stop.
He stood in the entrance for another moment. He thought about communion dancing and forty-three individuals and the specific quality of the peace in her face.
He said: I will see you tomorrow.
Yes, she said. She closed her eyes again. Sleep, Valerius.
He went.
He walked home through the midnight streets of Oakhaven and the amber was with him the whole way — faint, the low-level presence that he now understood was simply the color of his attention when it was oriented toward her, present even in her absence the way the warmth of a fire is present in the room after the fire has gone out.
He went home and he slept, and he did not dream about anything, and in the morning he woke before dawn and went back to the cathedral before she arrived, and sat on the altar steps with Aetheris in his lap, and waited.
