He arrived at the cathedral before she did.
This was becoming a habit. He had started arriving early in the days after the competition — the restlessness that had driven him here at midnight now working itself out in the mornings as well, the manor too quiet before the day had properly begun, the writing desk productive for only so many hours before the thing he was writing toward required the thing he was writing about.
He sat on the altar steps with Aetheris across his knees and waited.
He had not slept well. This was different from the sleeplessness of the grief months — that had been a heavy, inert failure of rest, the body refusing the process. Last night had been active, the mind turning the conversation over, examining it from different angles with the thoroughness it applied to arrangement problems and Resonance mathematics and all the other things he was better at analyzing than experiencing.
He had arrived at the same conclusion from all the angles: she had been frightened. Not of him. Of the conversation he had forced before she was ready for it. He had pushed, and she had done what she did when pushed too hard — deployed the most damaging available defense and then regretted it, alone, with the cherry trees as her only witness.
He understood this. He understood it with the specific clarity of someone who had spent twenty-one years doing the same thing in a different register.
He heard her on the path outside — not footsteps, the Resonance shift, the warm directional change in the air that preceded her arrival. He did not move. He sat on the altar steps with Aetheris in his lap and looked at the cherry trees and waited.
She came through the entrance.
She stopped when she saw him. He could see, in his peripheral vision, the slight preparation — the gathering of the performance version, the Aurelia brightness beginning to assemble. He had seen this process many times from the outside. Today he watched it begin and then stop, incompletely, the performance half-assembled and then set aside, as if she had decided at the last moment that the cost of the full construction was more than she could pay this morning.
She was just herself. Tired, careful, present.
He did not apologize. He did not address the fight. He did not give her the explanation she might have been braced for or the argument she might have been prepared to receive. He opened the violin case, which had been closed across his knees, and took out Aetheris.
She stood in the entrance for a moment longer. Then she walked into the nave and moved to her opening position.
He raised Aetheris to his chin.
He did not play the competition piece. He did not play the arrangement they had built, the structured thing with its scores and its annotations and the history of all their corrections and negotiations embedded in it. He played the concerto — not the arranged version, not the safe version he had been working toward in the notebook. The version from yesterday, the raw unfinished one, the one that had gone somewhere unexpected and arrived somewhere true.
He played from the beginning.
She moved.
Not the competition choreography. Not the technical practice sequences. She moved the way she moved at midnight — the slow continuous arcs, the transitions that had no name in the dance vocabulary he knew, the Weave-Dancing as language rather than performance. She was reading the concerto the way she read everything — with her whole body, finding its logic and responding to it, the movement a direct translation of what the music was saying into physical terms.
The cherry trees woke.
All three of them, the immediate surge of the full response — the blossoms falling in their spiral, the Resonance pulse warm and rising, the amber present everywhere in the nave light. He played and she moved and the trees answered both of them and the stones under their feet hummed with the accumulated presence of everything that had happened in this space over the past weeks and over the centuries before they arrived.
He reached the place he had stopped yesterday. The last written bar. The edge of the map.
He kept playing.
It was different today. Yesterday the improvisation had been an act of courage, or something adjacent to courage — the deliberate stepping off the known path into unmapped territory. Today it was not deliberate. Today it simply continued, the harmonic logic of the piece so familiar now that the next phrase arrived before he chose it, the music knowing where it was going before he did.
She moved with him through the unmapped territory.
He had written nothing here. There was nothing for her to read. She was working entirely from what she heard, the real-time translation of his Cadence into her movement, and she was — he could see it, even without looking up, the amber giving him a quality of peripheral awareness he had not had before all of this — she was matching him phrase for phrase, the movement arriving simultaneously with the music it was responding to, neither of them leading and neither of them following.
The Harmonic Surge arrived without warning.
Not the preliminary warmth of compatible Resonance. The full event — the feedback loop, the amplification beyond what either of them was producing individually, the cathedral's accumulated Cadence joining their combined output and the whole of it becoming more than its parts. The blossoms were not falling anymore; they were suspended, drifting in a pattern that had no natural explanation, the luminescence from all three trees combining into a single quality of light that was not the cold light of the individual trees but something warmer, something that had the specific color he had been seeing for weeks.
Amber.
Full, unequivocal amber, the whole nave, the stones and the roots and the broken paving and the vaulted ceiling open to the winter sky, all of it the warm gold of the hour before sunset or the color of her eyes or the color of the world as it had appeared to him in the weeks of this, in all the ways it had been appearing.
The Surge lasted perhaps forty seconds. Then the Resonance returned to its normal level and the blossoms resumed their natural fall and the amber faded back to the ordinary cherry blossom luminescence of the nave's ambient light.
He lowered the bow.
He was aware of his own breathing — steadier than it should have been, given what had just happened. The bow arm was tired. Aetheris was warm under his left hand with the deep specific warmth of an instrument that had been fully used.
Lysandra was standing in the center of the nave. She had been standing still for some part of the Surge — he was not sure when she had stopped moving, whether she had stopped moving or whether the distinction between moving and still had ceased to be meaningful when the Surge was at its peak. She was looking at him.
He looked back at her.
The expression on her face was not the open midnight one. It was not the tired-and-peaceful one. It was something he had not seen before — something that was arriving, he thought, at the same time it was being felt, too new to have been managed or named or put into any of the registers she kept her expressions in.
It was, he recognized slowly, the face of someone who has just understood something they had been resisting understanding.
Again tomorrow? she said. Her voice was quiet.
Yes, he said.
She nodded once. She moved to where her bag was sitting against the cherry tree root and picked it up. She was leaving — not abruptly, not the brisk efficient departure of the pull-back days, but the natural departure of a session that has been completed.
At the entrance she stopped.
She did not turn around. She said, to the cathedral entrance and the winter light beyond it: I am sorry about yesterday.
He said: I pushed before you were ready.
A pause. You were not wrong about what you said.
I know, he said.
Another pause, longer. Then: I know you know.
She went out into the winter light and the cathedral settled around him, and the cherry trees continued their breathing, and the amber, which had faded back to the ambient luminescence, was still present at the edges of everything — the color of the air in this space, the color of this specific quality of afternoon, the color that was hers and that he carried with him now everywhere he went, waking or sleeping, playing or still.
