He left the manor at midnight.
This was not something he had planned. He had gone to bed at the usual hour — his mother had believed that irregular sleep was the enemy of precision, and he had not yet managed to talk himself out of her schedule even in her absence — and had lain in the dark for two hours listening to the manor breathe and finding, for the first time in recent memory, that the stillness would not hold him.
It was not insomnia, exactly. He was tired. His body had the particular heavy quality that came from days of minimal movement and minimal food and the kind of grief that was less like pain and more like weather — not acute, just constant, changing the quality of everything without announcing itself. He was tired and the darkness was familiar and there was no reason he could identify to be awake.
And yet.
He rose, dressed — coat, gloves, the whole of it, because his mother's lessons about appearance had apparently achieved a kind of cellular permanence — and went downstairs and out the side door before he had fully decided to do so.
The night air hit him immediately. Cold, carrying the smell of the canal and the Worldtree forests to the north and beneath both of those the particular mineral quality that Oakhaven's stonework had in wet weather — they had had rain two days ago and the cobblestones were still holding a trace of it. He stood on the path for a moment, breathing.
Then he walked.
*
Oakhaven at midnight was a different city than Oakhaven in daylight, and different again from the glittering evening version he had observed from the balcony. The entertainment quarter was still lit and audible — it would be until the early hours, the taverns and the music halls — but the residential streets above it were quiet, their suspended Resonance crystals dimmed to their night-cycle minimum, casting just enough light to navigate by. The stone buildings rose on either side of him in pale tiers, their windows dark, their doorways shadowed.
He had no destination.
This was, he realized as he walked, the first time in recent memory he had gone somewhere without a destination. His life had been organized around destinations since childhood — rehearsal rooms, performance halls, the Academy, the court, each one a point on a map with a specific purpose attached to it. Even his walks in the months before his mother's death had been structured: a route, a duration, a time of return. His mother had not believed in purposeless wandering. *Movement without direction,* she had said, *is simply restlessness dressed up as freedom.*
He was restless.
He let the restlessness direct him and went where it led, which was generally downhill, toward the lower quarters of the city.
*
He passed the Oakhaven Academy without intending to.
It was a large building by any standard — the main hall alone was three stories, its facade decorated with the carved musical notation that had been fashionable in the architectural style of two centuries ago, each symbol representing a different aspect of Cadence theory. He had spent nine years inside it. He knew the smell of its practice rooms and the specific acoustic quality of its main performance hall and the way the Resonance crystals in the upper corridor hummed at a frequency slightly off from the city standard, a problem the maintenance staff had been trying to correct for decades.
He stood outside the iron fence and looked up at the lit windows of the upper floor.
There were students inside, even at this hour. The Academy's advanced program had no fixed schedule — the theory being that Cadence Wielders needed to practice when the Resonance moved them, not when institutional convenience dictated — and he could see movement through the glass, the occasional silhouette bending over an instrument.
Then he heard it.
A violin, from somewhere on the second floor. A student working through a passage he recognized — one of the standard exercises from the intermediate curriculum, a sequence designed to build finger independence. The student was playing it at half-tempo, which was correct practice method, but was landing slightly early on the third beat of every fourth bar. Not dramatically early. Just early enough to introduce a subtle wrongness into the rhythm, a hiccup that repeated and repeated without the player seeming to notice.
Valerius stood very still.
His right hand had lifted from his side. The fingers were moving — not dramatically, barely visibly, just the index and middle finger tapping the iron bar of the fence in the correct rhythm. One, two, three — rest — one, two, three — the third beat landing precisely where it should land.
He looked down at his hand.
The tapping stopped.
He stepped back from the fence and continued walking.
But he was aware, now, with a clarity he had not had twenty minutes ago, that somewhere inside the six months of gray and silence, the part of him that listened had not gone anywhere. It was still there. Still measuring. Still knowing, without effort, exactly where the third beat belonged.
He was not certain whether this was a comfort or a complication.
*
The flashback came while he was walking, which was unusual. They generally found him in stillness — at the desk, at the window, in the dark before sleep. Perhaps the movement loosened something.
He was twelve years old again, but this time it was not the performance that came back to him. It was the afterward.
The ministers had applauded and his mother had inclined her head and the attendants had begun to stir, the post-performance rustling of an audience preparing to disperse. His mother had come to stand beside him on the small stage, and he had waited — the way he always waited in those moments — for the evaluation. The listing of what had been correct and what required further work.
She had looked at him for a moment without speaking.
Then she had placed one hand briefly on his shoulder. Not an embrace — she did not embrace, or not often, and when she did it had a formal quality, as if physical affection were another discipline to be performed correctly. But the hand on his shoulder had been — something. He had felt it as something, at twelve, though he had not had language for what.
*"You did not tremble,"* she had said.
*"No, Mother."*
*"Good."* The hand left his shoulder. *"There are three passages we need to revisit. The transition at bar forty-two was technically sound but the dynamic shaping was uneven. I'll have notes for you by morning."*
And that had been that. He had held the feeling from the hand on his shoulder for the rest of the evening, carefully, the way one holds something that might be fragile, because he had understood even at twelve that it was all he was going to get and he had better make it last.
Walking through the midnight streets of Oakhaven at twenty-one, he thought: *She was trying.* He had arrived at this conclusion before, many times, but it had different weight tonight for reasons he could not fully articulate. She had been trying, within the only language she had, to give him what he needed. The hand on the shoulder had been — in her grammar — an expression of love.
The problem was that he had been fluent in a language she couldn't speak, and she had been fluent in one he was still trying to learn.
*
He had drifted, he realized, significantly further from the upper city than he usually walked.
The streets here were narrower, the buildings older, their stonework less maintained. The suspended crystals were spaced further apart and some of them had gone dark entirely, replaced by oil lanterns that cast a warmer and less reliable light. The canal smell was stronger here — he was close to the lower waterways, the working canals rather than the decorative ones near the Academy district.
He did not know this part of the city well. He had had no reason to come here as a child, and his adult movements had been confined to the circuits of the Academy and the court and the manor. He was aware of a faint discomfort — not danger, exactly, but the particular unease of being outside one's mapped territory.
He turned to orient himself and became aware, gradually, that the air was different here.
Not the temperature — that was consistent with the rest of the city. Not the smell, which was canal water and old stone and someone's cooking from an open window. It was something subtler. A quality of the air itself, as if it were slightly more — present, somehow. As if the silence here had more texture than the silence elsewhere.
He slowed his pace.
Trees, ahead. That was unusual in the lower city, which was densely built. He could see them above the roofline — old trees, much larger than the cultivated ornamentals of the upper districts. Their branches were dense even in winter, and as he moved closer he could see that they were flowering despite the season. White flowers, small, clustered thickly along the branches, and they were faintly luminescent — not the sharp crystalline light of Resonance lanterns but something softer, organic, like the cold light of deep-sea creatures.
Nightbloom Cherries. He had read about them. He had never seen them in person.
They grew in only a few places in Aethelgard, and they grew where the Eldritch Cadence was oldest and deepest, in places where the Resonance had been accumulating in the earth for centuries undisturbed. They were associated, in the older texts, with the indigenous peoples who had inhabited the continent before the current kingdoms — people whose relationship with the Cadence had been fundamentally different, less technological and more organic, less about manipulation and more about participation.
He stood at the edge of the street looking at the trees.
From somewhere among them — from the structure behind them, which he could now see was a large building in the old cathedral style, mostly in ruin, its stone walls crumbling and covered in climbing plants — he heard a sound.
Not music.
Not quite.
Something rhythmic, something that moved through the cold air with a quality he could not immediately categorize. Not sound in the ordinary sense but something felt more than heard, a pulse in the atmosphere that made the Nightbloom Cherry flowers shiver slightly on their branches.
Resonance. But unlike any Resonance he had ever encountered.
He took one step toward it.
Then stopped.
He was tired, he realized. Not the bone-deep exhaustion he had been living with for six months, but the simple physical tiredness of someone who had walked a long way at midnight without eating enough. His feet were cold. He had not brought a lantern and the moon was behind clouds and the street between him and those trees was darker than he would have preferred.
He was also — and this took him a moment to identify, because it had been a while since he had felt it — curious. Genuinely, irritatingly curious about what was making that sound and why the air near those trees felt the way it did.
But he was tired.
He turned back toward the upper city.
The walk home took longer than he expected. He arrived at the manor as the first pale suggestion of dawn was beginning to lighten the eastern sky, went upstairs without being seen, and sat on the edge of his bed still dressed.
He thought about the trees.
He thought about the sound.
He thought about his hand on the fence, fingers moving to the correct rhythm without being told to.
He lay down without removing his coat and stared at the ceiling for a while, and then, because the walk had done its work, he fell asleep.
*
He dreamed, briefly, of the Nightbloom Cherry trees. In the dream they were not in the lower city but in the manor's formal garden, growing up through the clipped hedges and the stone paths, their white flowers covering everything, luminescent and still. The garden was full of sound — not music, not the Resonance he knew, but something older, something that felt like the first thing that had ever been made.
In the dream he reached up and touched one of the flowers.
It lit up under his hand. Just for a moment. Just enough to see by.
He woke up with his hands open on the coverlet and the pale winter light coming through the curtains and the violin case, as always, on the table across the room.
He lay still for a moment.
Then, slowly, he sat up. He looked at the case for a long time. He thought about the dream, and the garden, and the flower lighting up under his hand.
He thought: *Tomorrow. I'll go back tomorrow.*
He was not sure what he intended to do when he got there.
But the question, for the first time, did not feel like a weight. It felt like the beginning of something he could not yet see clearly — a shape in the distance, indistinct, but there.
