He left at the usual time.
She stayed.
This had become its own kind of habit — him leaving, her staying, the cathedral transitioning from the shared space of the session into the private space of the evening, the cherry trees shifting from their reactive state to the slow breathing of the ambient hours. She had her own life in this space that had nothing to do with sessions or arrangements or competition preparation, and she had come to think of the hour or two after the sessions ended as some of the more honest hours of her day.
She took out the notebook.
It was a small thing — dark cover, well-worn at the corners from months of daily handling, the pages dense with the small and precise script of someone who had been writing in the same language since childhood. The tribal script, which she was the last person alive who could read fluently, had the quality of a private language now — not because she had chosen to make it private, but because the community that had shared it was gone and privacy was what remained of a shared thing when the sharing stopped.
She opened to the current page.
She wrote about the dancing lesson.
Not as a technical record — she had no interest in documenting the mechanics of what she had taught. She wrote the way she wrote when she was being honest with the notebook: about the specific quality of his attention while learning something that did not come naturally to him, the way he brought the same focused deliberateness to trying to feel a movement from inside that he brought to solving notation problems and Resonance calculations and every other challenge she had watched him work through since the beginning. She wrote about the hands-on corrections and the fact that this had been entirely practical and also entirely something else and the fact that both of these things were equally and simultaneously true.
She wrote: I find myself cataloguing things about him. Not for any useful purpose. Simply because they accumulate and I have nowhere else to put them.
She wrote: the way he holds Aetheris when he is thinking and not playing. The specific tempo of his footsteps on the broken paving, which I know well enough now to identify without turning around. The way the amber comes back to his eyes before he has consciously decided to play — before the bow is raised, before the deliberate process begins, the color is already there.
She put the pen down for a moment.
She looked at the central cherry tree, which was doing its slow evening pulse, the blossom luminescence at its ambient level, consistent and unhurried.
She picked up the pen again.
She wrote: I came here with a specific purpose. I built the arrangement with a specific intended outcome. He would play again. I would complete the ceremony. The Resonance of this place would be maintained for whatever came after me. These were achievable goals and I achieved them, or I am in the process of achieving them, and I should have been able to hold the rest of it at the distance I intended to hold it.
She wrote: I did not hold it at the distance I intended.
She wrote: I want to stay. I wrote that two weeks ago and I meant it and I still mean it and I am increasingly uncertain about whether what I mean is the thing I thought I meant when I first said it, which was the Solstice plan, the Surge, the possibility of surviving winter. I think I also mean something else.
She wrote: I mean him. Specifically. I mean that I want the mornings in this cathedral and the sessions and the notation revisions and the way he says my name now, not Aurelia, not the managed version, Lysandra, like a note he has finally found the correct placement for. I want the concerto completed and played somewhere that matters and I want to be in the audience when he plays it. I want to teach him the full warm-up sequence and then eventually the full practice movement and eventually, if we have enough time, the ceremony itself, so that someone in the world knows it who is not me.
She stopped.
She had written that last part — so that someone in the world knows it who is not me — and it was true and she had known it was true and she had also been aware, as she wrote it, that it was not the complete truth. The complete truth was the part she wrote next.
She wrote: I am afraid.
She wrote: not of dying. I made peace with that, or I believed I had made peace with that, and I am not sure now that what I made was peace. I think it may have been resignation, which looks like peace from a distance but is different from the inside. I am afraid of what it does to him. That is the part I built the arrangement to prevent. I gave him a fiction in which he was not the person who was going to lose someone. I gave him a purpose that did not require him to care about me personally, only professionally. I gave him Caelum as the object of the fiction specifically because he could survive losing Caelum's imagined regard far more easily than he could survive—
She stopped writing.
She looked at what she had written.
She wrote: I failed the plan. I failed it the moment I told him my name. Possibly before that. The plan required me to remain Aurelia, and Aurelia was manageable, and I could not remain Aurelia because this place would not let me and he would not let me and eventually I could not let myself.
She wrote: I do not know if the Surge will work. Elowen believes it is possible. He believes it is possible. I am trying to believe it is possible and I am finding, which surprises me, that the trying is easier than it was a month ago. A month ago I could not imagine a morning after winter. Now I can imagine it with a specificity that frightens me.
She wrote: he would still be here. In the morning after winter. In the cathedral, probably. Working on the concerto. Annoyed with a specific notation problem. Waiting for me to arrive.
She stopped writing for a while.
The cherry trees pulsed around her in the evening quiet. The blossoms drifted. The cathedral held its usual presence — the accumulated centuries of it, the specific quality of a space that had received many things and retained them.
She picked up the pen.
She wrote: I think I knew this was happening from the beginning. From the first session, perhaps. The Color Hearing was early — earlier than it should have been for the stage of Resonance development we were at. The texts describe it as a consequence of sustained compatible practice, weeks or months of shared Cadence work. We produced it in the second week. I noted it and I did not stop.
She wrote: I should have stopped. I built the arrangement to stop here, at the professional boundary, and I did not stop and I do not regret that I did not stop and I am not going to pretend that I do.
She put the pen down.
She looked at the central cherry tree for a long time.
Then she said, in the tribal language, in the cadence of the formal address she used for the communion ceremony — the words that the elders had used when speaking to the site about things that mattered:
I think I love him.
The cherry trees pulsed once. Bright, immediate, the full three-voice harmony of all three trees responding simultaneously. Then they settled back to their ordinary evening rhythm.
She sat with what she had said until the light in the cathedral had faded to the dim ambient glow of the blossoms, and then she closed the notebook and put it in her bag and stood and stretched and went to the entrance.
She paused at the threshold.
She looked back at the central cherry tree.
Yes, she said. I know. I know what it costs.
The trees did not answer in words. They never answered in words. But the pulse was steady and even and warm, and the blossoms fell as they always fell, and the cathedral held her the way it had been holding her for three months, with the patient permanence of something that had been waiting for her to arrive and was in no hurry for her to leave.
She went out into the evening.
The city was dark and lit and alive around her, and the cold air smelled of the canal and the distant Worldtree forests, and she walked through it toward the cathedral district with the notebook in her bag and the name she had said to the cherry trees sitting in her chest like a stone and like a star, heavy and warm and entirely hers.
