The message arrived at the barracks at half past seven in the morning, tucked into the leather wallet of routine dispatches that the duty clerk brought to Caelum's desk each day along with his coffee.
It did not look like anything. That was the point. A small square of paper, folded twice, sealed with plain wax — no crest, no identifying mark, the kind of correspondence that a clerk sorting through a cavalry captain's mail would file without a second thought under personal, non-urgent. Caelum had established this system himself, in the first week, and he had been pleased with how naturally invisible it had become.
He broke the seal and read it under the pretext of reviewing the dispatches.
He played today. Three minutes. It's starting.
He read it twice, then folded it again and put it in his inner breast pocket, where it would sit against his chest for the rest of the day with the particular weight of things that matter more than they appear to.
Three minutes.
He thought about that for a moment. Six months of silence, and then three minutes. It would not mean anything to most people. To Caelum, who had grown up alongside Valerius Vance and knew precisely what six months of voluntary silence from Aetheris represented — who had watched his friend move through the manor like a man who had misplaced the most essential part of himself and could not remember where he had put it — three minutes was not a small thing.
He picked up his coffee and looked out the window at the river quarter below, where the morning markets were beginning to set up along the canal, and thought about a woman in orange who had walked into his office six weeks ago and asked him to help her save someone he loved.
He had not known what to make of her, at first.
She had arrived without an appointment, which was common enough — he had an open-door policy for junior cavalry members with grievances, and strangers occasionally wandered into the wrong office. She was not a cavalry member and she was not lost. She had asked for him by name, specifically, and when his clerk had questioned her she had said she had information regarding Captain Sterling that was relevant to his personal situation, which was vague enough to be either meaningless or significant, and his clerk had brought her in because Caelum had trained his staff to err on the side of significant.
She was young. Nineteen, perhaps twenty. Orange dress, hair down, the kind of self-possession in a formal military office that either came from complete ignorance of where she was or complete disregard for its implications. In his experience these were functionally indistinguishable.
She had sat down in the chair across from his desk without being invited to, looked at him directly, and said: I need you to play a role. It will require perhaps three to four months of occasional public appearances, some light deception, and an ability to smile convincingly at someone who is not saying anything amusing. I understand this may be a significant ask of a man in your position. I am asking anyway.
He had put down his pen. Who are you?
Lysandra Vespera. My mother's people called me the last of the Moonleaf. She said it the way people say things that used to be titles and have since become simple facts, with all the grief of that transition absorbed into the flatness of the delivery. You don't know my name. You know my situation, or you will in a moment. I am going to tell you something I have told no one in this city, and I am going to ask you to use it to help Valerius Vance, and I want you to understand before I begin that I am not asking you to save me.
He had been quiet, listening.
I have the Glass-Heart Curse, she said. My tribe was the last carrier of the knowledge to break it. When the tribe was destroyed, that knowledge was destroyed with it. I have perhaps six months before the end of winter. There is nothing to be done about this and I have made my peace with it, and I am not telling you this so that you will try to find a cure, because there is no cure and I have looked.
He had looked at her hands, folded on his desk. He had known, before she said it, that something was wrong — the quality of her skin, its particular luminescent pallor, was not the pallor of illness but of something more fundamental, a change in the material of the body rather than a disruption of its function. He had spent enough time near people who were dying to recognize the particular way they carried themselves when they knew it.
What had surprised him was everything else.
The straightness of her spine. The complete absence of self-pity in her voice. The way she had looked at him not as a man who might help her but as a resource she was assessing for a purpose that had nothing to do with herself.
Valerius, he had said.
He stopped playing six months ago. He is not going to start again by himself — not because he cannot, but because he does not have a reason that exists outside himself. Everything inside him is pointing in the wrong direction. He needs something external that requires him to go toward the music rather than away from it. She had tilted her head slightly. I can be that thing. But I cannot be it as myself. If I approach him as someone who knows about his situation and has come to help, he will refuse. He refuses help from people who know about his situation. He needs to think he is helping me.
So you want to — he had started.
I want to tell him I have feelings for you, she said. Which is the lie. The truth is that I need him to have a reason to come to the cathedral and play, and a woman who needs his help with a competition is a better reason than a woman who needs his help with herself. Men like Valerius Vance respond better to professional stakes than personal ones. It gives them something to aim at.
Caelum had looked at her for a long time.
And you are asking me to play along, he said.
I am asking you to exist, she said. Show up occasionally. Be pleasant. Do not contradict anything I say. That is all.
That is not all and you know it. You are asking me to watch my best friend fall for someone who is going to die, and not tell him.
Something moved across her face then — the first moment she had shown him anything beneath the surface. It passed quickly, but it was there: the acknowledgment of the cost. Not to herself. The cost she was asking him to carry.
Yes, she said simply. I know that is what I am asking.
He had stood and gone to the window. The river quarter had been doing the ordinary things it did in the morning, and he had looked at it for a while and thought about Valerius — Valerius at the manor moving through rooms like a ghost, Valerius who had not eaten properly in months, Valerius whose hands shook slightly now when they had never shaken before. He thought about the particular grief of watching someone you love disappear while still present.
He thought about the thing she had said: I am not asking you to save me.
He had turned back to her. If I do this, he said, you tell me the truth about how you are doing. Not the performance version. The actual truth. I want to know what the curse is doing and when it is accelerating and what — if there is anything at all — can be done.
She had looked at him for a moment. Something shifted in her expression — small, careful.
All right, she said.
And you do not push me away from this. I am not a prop. I am a person who is choosing to do a difficult thing for someone I care about, and I want you to remember that.
I will remember it, she said. And she had, as far as he could tell. She had been — not quite honest, that was too simple. She had been as honest as she knew how to be, which was not the same thing but was more than most people managed.
Back at his desk, Caelum read the message one more time before he burned it in the small grate his office kept lit in winter.
He played today. Three minutes. It's starting.
He took a piece of paper and wrote a brief reply: How are you? Not him. You.
He folded it, sealed it, gave it to the courier system that neither of them would ever be able to fully explain if asked about it directly.
The reply came back before noon.
The joints in my left hand have been stiff for four days. Elowen's preparation is helping. I have been eating properly, mostly. Don't fuss.
He sat with this reply for a moment, aware of a feeling that had no clean name — not grief, not anger, not the clean shape of either of those. Something more like the feeling of watching a fire burn and knowing your job is not to put it out.
He thought about Valerius at twelve years old, trembling before his first formal performance, and the way he had steadied himself and walked out and played perfectly.
He thought: Three minutes is where it starts.
Later that afternoon, when he was scheduled to lead the public cavalry exercises in the river quarter, he found himself surveying the audience that gathered along the canal railing — the usual mixture of market-day observers, shopkeepers taking a break, children pressing between adults for a better view — and wondering if she was somewhere in it, watching. As she had been, apparently, for several weeks before she came to his office.
He had looked. She was not there, or not visibly. But he had the feeling, not for the first time, that she was very good at being present without being visible, and that this was a skill she had developed for reasons that had nothing to do with him.
He led the exercises with the professional competence expected of his rank, and afterward, when the junior cavalry members were dispersing and he was signing off on the afternoon logs, he practiced the smile he would need to produce when Valerius inevitably introduced them.
The smile of a man who had no idea any of this was happening.
He was, he reflected, going to be terrible at this.
But he was going to do it anyway. Because Lysandra Vespera, the last of the Moonleaf, had sat across from him with her luminescent skin and her absolute self-possession and said I am not asking you to save me, and because in twenty-one years of friendship, Caelum Sterling had never found a way to do nothing when someone he loved needed something, even when what they needed was the very specific and counterintuitive thing of being left to find their own way back.
He went home, practiced the smile again in his shaving mirror, concluded it still needed work, and went to bed.
In the morning there would be another message, or there would not be, and either way the fire would still be burning, and his job was still to let it burn.
