After the declaration of war, the pressure around Leo did not let up. It intensified.
He felt it everywhere now, in a way he couldn't ignore the way he'd once managed to. The corridors parted and reformed around him. Eyes tracked him between classes. And the four girls - he could feel them now, a constant low-grade awareness, the sense of being orbited, watched over, competed for, even when none of them was in sight. Whatever truce or understanding they'd reached at the cafeteria, it hadn't reduced the attention on him; if anything it had focused it, sharpened it, turned four diffuse interests into four deliberate campaigns, and Leo, at the center, felt the weight of it settle over him like a second uniform he couldn't take off.
He was tired. Not physically - emotionally, in the specific way of a person who can never quite relax because he can never quite be unobserved. He'd come to this world wanting nothing but to disappear into the background, and instead he'd become the most foregrounded person in the building, and the gap between what he wanted and what he had ached like a held breath.
So he did what he always did when the world got to be too much. He went looking for a quiet corner.
The idea came to him during a free period, staring at a noticeboard thick with club advertisements - the Debate Society (competitive, loud), the Drama Club (visible, very visible), the Student Council's various committees (no, absolutely not, Scarlett) - all of them buzzing, populated, exactly the kind of place where a person got noticed. He'd nearly given up when his eye caught a small, faded, half-peeling notice near the bottom, so unassuming it had clearly been ignored for years.
GARDENING CLUB, it read. New members welcome. Below it, in smaller letters that someone had added later, almost apologetically: (Currently 1 member.)
Leo felt something in his chest unclench.
One member. A gardening club with one member, tucked away somewhere, doing quiet patient work with soil and growing things, the least glamorous and least attended activity the school had to offer. It was, he thought, possibly the single most appealing sentence he'd read since he arrived. He noted the location - a greenhouse and plot at the far edge of the grounds, about as far from the main buildings as it was possible to get - and went to find it.
The gardening club was everything he'd hoped.
It was a modest greenhouse, glass panes a little cloudy with age, attached to a small outdoor plot, and it sat in a forgotten corner of the grounds where the noise of the school faded to nothing and the only sounds were birdsong and the soft drip of a watering can. The single member - a quiet, elderly groundskeeper-cum-teacher named Mr. Aldous who supervised the club mostly by pottering about and occasionally dispensing wisdom about soil pH - greeted Leo's arrival with mild surprise and undisguised pleasure, showed him around in about four minutes, handed him a pair of gloves, and left him largely to his own devices.
And Leo, for the first time in weeks, was alone, unobserved, and at peace.
He took to it immediately. There was something about the work - the soil under his hands, the slow patient business of tending, weeding, watering, the absolute lack of anyone watching or wanting or competing - that settled him the way cooking did, the way few things ever had. Plants didn't stare. Plants didn't fight over you or call you The Charm or leave letters in your locker. Plants just needed steady, attentive care, and responded to it, quietly, in their own time, and asked nothing else. He found he could breathe out here, fully, in a way he hadn't been able to since he'd woken in this strange world.
It suited him, too, in a way he half-noticed and didn't examine. He was good at this - good at nurturing, at coaxing growth, at the patient unglamorous work of helping something thrive. It was the same muscle he used cooking, the same one that made him hand back pens and bandage ankles and notice when people were tired. Tending things was simply what he did, what he'd always done, what he was for. He knelt in the soil of the neglected plot and worked, and felt useful, and felt calm, and felt - for once - unwatched.
And underneath the peace, as it always did when the noise quieted enough for him to hear himself, the old ache surfaced.
Because it was lovely, the quiet. It was exactly what he'd wanted. But kneeling there in the dirt, tending plants no one else cared about, in a corner no one else visited, Leo was aware of the particular loneliness that had shadowed him since the hospital window - the recognition that the peace of being unobserved was also, simply, the peace of being alone. He was good at taking care of things. He'd spent his whole life taking care of things - the dinner that needed making, the people who needed helping, the plants that needed tending. He poured care outward, steadily, into the world, the way the watering can poured into the soil.
And nothing, ever, poured back.
He paused, a seedling cupped in his gloved hands, and let himself feel it, just for a moment, the way he rarely did. He nurtured. Nobody nurtured him. He'd made peace with that long ago, back in the old world, decided it was simply the arrangement, that he was the kind of person who gave rather than received and that this was fine, this was who he was. But out here in the quiet, with no one to perform okayness for, the truth of it sat closer to the surface than usual: that he was a little starved, under everything. That for all the adoration this world heaped on him, all the gifts and the rescues and the competition, not one bit of it actually nourished him, because none of it saw him - the real him, the boy who tended things because no one had ever tended him, who'd learned young that being useful was the closest thing to being loved that he was likely to get.
He set the seedling carefully into the soil and pressed the earth gently around its roots.
"There you go," he murmured to it. "I've got you. Somebody's looking after you." And then, quieter, with a small rueful breath of a laugh at himself: "Lucky you."
He stayed until the light began to slant gold through the cloudy glass, and by the time he packed up and headed home he'd decided: this place was his. His sanctuary. The one corner of this overwhelming world that belonged to quiet Leo Evans and not to The Charm. He wouldn't tell anyone about it. He wouldn't let it become a thing. It would just be his - a small private island of the ordinary, where he could be the person he actually was for an hour a day, unwatched and unbothered and at rest.
It was a good plan. It lasted, by Leo's now-established standards, an impressively long time - nearly a full day.
Because Leo did not know - he never knew - that nothing he did at Silverleaf stayed secret, least of all a disappearance. He didn't see the way his absence registered, that very afternoon, with four people who had grown finely attuned to his whereabouts. He didn't see Scarlett note, with the faint frown of someone whose data has a gap in it, that Evans had not been where she expected after classes. He didn't see Aria, restless, asking around with studied casualness where the new guy had got to. He didn't see Chloe run a quiet correlation and conclude he'd acquired a new routine. And he didn't see Veronica Sterling, who had resources the others lacked and a newly personal motivation to use them, make a single quiet inquiry and receive, within the hour, a single quiet answer: the gardening club. The far edge of the grounds. Alone.
The war had not paused just because Leo had found a quiet corner. It had simply, like water, begun to find its way toward the place he'd gone.
Leo walked home through the gold evening light, dirt under his fingernails, calmer than he'd been in weeks, carrying the small warm secret of his sanctuary - and the next morning, when he arrived at his quiet forgotten greenhouse expecting birdsong and solitude, he found, instead, parked incongruously at the edge of the neglected plot, gleaming and absurd against the weathered glass and the humble soil, a car worth more than the entire school.
Leo stopped.
He looked at the car. He looked at his greenhouse. He looked at the car again.
"...Oh, no," he said, with feeling, to the morning.
His sanctuary had been found.
