Leo opened the door, and the evening came in like weather.
Aria was first, shouldering through the moment the latch gave, bright and loud and bristling. "Okay, what's the situation, why does Madam President get a private home-study session, that's - that is favoritism, that's a clear - Leo, hi, you okay? Did she make you do flashcards? You look like you've been doing flashcards." Behind her came Veronica, gliding in with cool displeasure and a single elegant eyebrow raised at the domestic scene - the books, the empty plate, the warmth of it - filing away, Leo could see, exactly how cozy it had gotten. And behind her, edging in last, clutching a tote bag of what turned out to be demographic ethics texts, came Chloe, pink and resolute, muttering something about her route home genuinely passing nearby, which deceived absolutely no one.
Within ninety seconds, Leo's small quiet flat contained four formidable young women and approximately zero quiet.
"This was a scheduled academic intervention," Scarlett was saying, with frayed authority, gathering her color-coded notes against her chest. "Booked. Planned. You can't simply -"
"There's nothing on any schedule about studying alone at his flat at night," Aria shot back. "You made that up. That's a made-up rule, you make up rules, it's your whole thing -"
"The demographic ethics module is genuinely my strongest subject," Chloe interjected, setting her texts down with a thump and a fierce blush, "and the textbook treatment is inadequate, I can explain it properly, that's - that's a legitimate contribution -"
"I have access to the actual authors of half these texts," said Veronica, "so if we're discussing who can offer the most -"
And Leo, standing in the middle of his own living room, watched his quiet study night detonate into a four-way contest, and felt the specific helpless vertigo of a man whose home had just been requisitioned as a battlefield.
It escalated from there, and it escalated, of all places, into the kitchen.
Because having established that they were all there to help him, the four of them apparently could not bear for any one of them to be helping more than the others, and the helping rapidly expanded from tutoring into caretaking - and the caretaking, in a flat with a kitchen, meant food. Aria announced she'd make him a "proper athlete's recovery snack" and began opening cupboards with more confidence than competence. Veronica, refusing to be outdone, declared she would prepare "something restorative" and approached the stove like a woman who had seen stoves operated by staff but never operated one herself. Scarlett, unwilling to cede the kitchen of the boy she'd just had a breakthrough evening with, moved to supervise. Chloe began, alarmingly, to describe the Maillard reaction while reaching for a pan.
The result was chaos of a very specific kind: four people who had been raised, every one of them, in a world where women did not cook - where it was simply not a thing they were ever expected to learn, the way Leo's old world hadn't expected most teenagers to, say, shoe a horse - all attempting, simultaneously, in a small kitchen, to cook for a boy in order to out-care one another, and all being, to varying and spectacular degrees, terrible at it.
Something caught fire almost immediately. It was small and Leo put it out fast, but it set the tone. Aria's recovery snack involved a quantity of protein powder and a blender lid that had not been properly secured. Veronica burned water, which Leo had not previously believed was possible. Chloe became so absorbed in the chemistry of caramelization that she caramelized rather past the point of edibility, narrating the entire degradation with fascinated dismay. Scarlett, the most competent of the four, was reduced to grim damage control, which mostly meant arguing with the other three about technique while the actual cooking suffered.
And Leo - of course - found himself doing the thing he always did.
He slid into the chaos and started managing it. Caught the blender lid before disaster. Rescued the water situation. Gently redirected Chloe before the caramel became a fire hazard. Wiped up spills, salvaged what could be salvaged, kept four enthusiastic and underskilled cooks from injuring themselves or burning down his flat - moving through the kitchen with quiet competent care, taking care of everyone, defusing every small crisis, pouring himself out into the situation exactly as he always did.
It took him a while to notice that he'd done it again.
He'd spent the whole evening - the whole evening, going back to Scarlett's arrival - either being fussed over or doing the fussing, and somewhere in the kitchen chaos, wiping caramel off his counter while four people argued about who got to feed him, he caught himself mid-motion and felt the irony land. They'd all come to take care of him. And here he was, taking care of all of them, because he didn't know how to do anything else, because the moment things got difficult he reached for the only role he'd ever known - the helper, the manager, the one who handles it - even when he was supposedly the one being helped. He'd learned to accept care exactly one evening ago and already defaulted straight back to giving it.
And then it tipped over.
The competition reached a pitch - some sharp exchange between Aria and Veronica, Scarlett cutting in, Chloe's device beeping in distress somewhere, all four voices rising in the small kitchen, the caretaking curdling into pure contest - and Leo, standing in the middle of it with a dishcloth in his hand and his quiet evening in ruins, felt something he rarely let himself feel.
He felt overwhelmed.
Not charmed, not flattered, not even amused - overwhelmed, in the specific way of a person who has been generously and relentlessly cared-at by people who aren't quite seeing him, in his own home, with no escape, until the care became a weight pressing on his chest. And for once, instead of swallowing it and smoothing it over and managing everyone's feelings at the expense of his own, he did the thing he almost never did.
He spoke up for himself.
"Hey," he said. Not loud. But something in it cut through, and the kitchen quieted. Four faces turned to him.
"I really appreciate all of this," Leo said, and he meant it, but his voice had an honesty in it they hadn't heard before, a tiredness he usually hid. "I do. You all came here to help me, and that's - that's genuinely kind, all of you. But I have to be honest with you, because I think I've been not-honest to be polite, and that's not fair to anyone." He set down the dishcloth. "This is a lot. Right now, this is - it's too much. It's my home, and there's a fire in my kitchen, and you're all sort of - competing, over me, in a way I don't fully understand but that feels like everybody's trying to do something for me and nobody's actually asking what I need. And what I need - " he took a breath, because asserting a need was the hardest thing in the world for him " - what I actually need right now is some quiet. And some space. I'm not saying it to be ungrateful. I'm saying it because I'm overwhelmed, and I've been pretending I'm not, and I'd rather just tell you the truth."
The kitchen went silent.
And Leo watched four faces fall - not in offense, but in dawning recognition, the same recognition that had crossed Scarlett's face at the meet and the cafeteria. Because he'd named it again. Gently, but plainly. They had swept into his home and turned it into an arena, had made their caring into a competition, had been so busy out-helping one another that not one of them had stopped to ask the boy in the middle what he actually wanted - which was, it turned out, the simplest and least glamorous thing in the world: a little quiet, a little space, to be asked rather than fought over.
They'd done it again. Treated him as the prize at the center of their contest instead of the person standing in front of them. And he'd told them, the only way he could, that it hurt a little.
"...Right," said Scarlett quietly, the first to gather herself, and there was real chagrin in it. "Of course. You're right. We've - this got away from us. From all of us."
"Yeah," Aria admitted, scrubbing the back of her neck, deflating. "Yeah, we kind of stormed your place and set it on fire. That's - sorry, Leo. That's not - we didn't ask. You're right."
Chloe had gone very quiet, staring at her beeping device, and Veronica, for once, said nothing at all, but something in her stillness suggested the point had landed hard - the point that all her wealth and all her instruments and all her competition had once again produced the opposite of what she wanted, had crowded the boy instead of caring for him.
"I'm not angry," Leo said, softening now that he'd said the hard thing, because he could never stay firm for long, it wasn't in him. "I promise. I just - I needed to say it. And I think - " he managed a tired smile " - I think I need to go for a walk. Clear my head. Get some air. You're all welcome to stay and - I don't know, eat the caramel, if any of it's survived. But I'm going to step out for a bit. Is that okay?"
It was, of course, not really a question, and the four of them - chastened, thoughtful, each privately turning over the same uncomfortable lesson - let him go.
Leo pulled on his jacket, gave them a last small reassuring smile, and stepped out of his own overwhelmed flat into the cool quiet of the evening, breathing out, finally, into air that wasn't full of anyone wanting anything from him.
He needed to think. About the strange unbearable abundance of his life here, about being cared-at without being seen, about the four people he'd just left in his kitchen - who he liked, genuinely, every one of them, and who all seemed to want something from him he couldn't name and wasn't sure he had to give.
He set off down the dim street, alone, grateful for the silence, with no particular destination in mind.
It was the first genuinely unwise decision he'd made in this world - a rare and precious boy, alone, after dark, walking away from the four people best equipped to protect him, into a city where his quiet ordinary safety had never, for one moment, been as guaranteed as he assumed.
But he didn't know that. He just walked, and breathed, and was, for a little while, blessedly alone.
Behind him, in the flat, four girls cleaned up a wrecked kitchen in unusual silence, each chewing on the same hard truth - and none of them yet aware that the boy they'd been busy fighting over had just walked, unescorted and unaware, directly into the one kind of danger this world actually held for someone like him.
