The Aldemar house smelled of dried herbs and woodsmoke and something underneath both of those things — a particular domestic warmth that Vera had come to associate, over years of visits, with the specific quality of a house that had been tended carefully by someone who did not have very much and had learned to make that sufficient.
She had been coming here since she was twelve years old. After Søren left for the boats, she had continued coming — not frequently, not on any fixed schedule, but with the irregular persistence of someone who feels a connection to a place and does not quite know how to sever it. Bà Aldemar made tea and talked about the trấn and asked after Vera's parents and did not mention Søren more than once per visit, which Vera had come to understand was a form of consideration on the older woman's part — a way of making the visits comfortable for both of them without either of them having to say why they might otherwise not be.
Today she had Élodie beside her on the path to the door.
She had not planned to bring her. Or she had planned it without quite deciding to — had mentioned, the previous evening, that she sometimes visited bà Aldemar, and Élodie had said I would like to come if that is all right, and Vera had said of course, and here they were. She had spent most of the walk over trying to identify exactly what she felt about it and had arrived at the unsatisfying conclusion that she felt several things simultaneously and that they did not resolve neatly into anything simpler.
She knocked.
The door opened after a moment — bà Aldemar moved more slowly than she had five years ago, but her face when she appeared in the doorway was the same face: sharp-eyed, attentive, the face of a woman who had spent forty years in a classroom and had never lost the habit of reading the person in front of her quickly and accurately. She looked at Vera first — the familiar nod, the slight softening around the eyes that was her version of warmth. Then she looked at Élodie.
The recognition was immediate. Vera watched it happen — the small reorganization of the older woman's face as she located something in the archive of decades and matched it to the young woman standing on her step.
Con gái nhà Voss, she said. Élodie.
Yes, Élodie said. The smile she gave was unguarded in a way Vera rarely saw from her — open and slightly undone, the smile of someone who has been recognized by someone they did not expect to be recognized by. You remember me.
I taught you for two years, bà Aldemar said. You sat in the second row and asked more questions than the rest of the class combined. She said it without complaint — with something close to fondness, if not quite there. I remember everyone I taught. Come in, both of you.
The front room was small and very warm — the stove in the corner had been going for hours, filling the space with a dry, close heat that was welcome after the autumn cold outside. The furniture was old and well-maintained, everything worn in exactly the places it should be worn. A shelf of books along one wall. A small table by the window with two chairs. The window itself with its pale yellow curtains, which Vera had looked at so many times that she no longer truly saw them.
She saw them now, through Élodie's eyes, and understood for the first time what they looked like to someone who had not been here before — warm and deliberate, chosen with care, a small act of making beautiful what could have been merely functional.
Bà Aldemar put water on and they settled at the table. The two of them in the chairs by the window, the older woman in her own chair near the stove. On the shelf behind her were three photographs. Vera knew them all. She did not look at them today.
They talked the way one talked in this room — slowly, without urgency, about the trấn and its people and its seasons. Bà Aldemar asked after Vera's parents and her studies and the Stanford application with the directness of someone who had believed for years that Vera was capable of more than her circumstances suggested and had never softened that belief into something more comfortable.
When are you hearing from them, she asked.
Spring, Vera said. The letters go slowly.
Bà Aldemar made a sound that indicated she had views on how quickly letters ought to travel and that the current reality did not satisfy those views. She turned to Élodie. And your grandmother. How is she truly.
Élodie described her grandmother's condition with the specificity of a doctor and the tenderness of a granddaughter. The older woman listened with the attentiveness of someone who had watched many people age and had a clear-eyed relationship to the process — she asked two or three precise questions that came from observation rather than from having read something, and then she nodded and poured more tea and did not offer false comfort or false alarm.
Élodie looked at the room.
Vera watched her do it — the quiet systematic attention she brought to new spaces, the way her eyes moved from the books to the window to the photographs with the unhurried curiosity of someone who believed rooms told you things about their inhabitants if you were patient. She read the spines of the books on the shelf. She looked at the woodwork around the window — someone had carved a small repeating pattern into the frame decades ago, with more skill than the modest house would have suggested, and Élodie looked at it with the particular expression she had when something surprised her pleasantly.
Then her eyes found the photographs.
Vera knew the moment she found the third one.
The boy of perhaps fourteen, standing in front of this house with his hands at his sides and an expression that was not quite a smile and not quite the absence of one. Vera had looked at this photograph more times than she would have admitted to anyone, and had long since memorized every detail of it: the angle of his shoulders, the way the light caught the side of his face, the quality of his stillness — present in body, thinking of something just past the edge of the frame.
Élodie looked at it for a moment. Then she looked at something else.
Vera looked at the window.
He is back, bà Aldemar said. Without preamble, the way she said most important things. Søren. You know this, yes?
Vera said: yes, his boat came in a few days ago.
I have not seen him yet. He will come when he comes. She wrapped both hands around her cup — small hands, the knuckles enlarged with age, but steady. He always takes a day or two when he first gets back. To remember how to be on land.
Élodie said: it has been a long time since he was home.
A few years. He comes when the routes bring him through. The routes have not brought him through lately. A pause. There are reasons for that.
Vera set her cup down very slightly more carefully than was necessary.
He is good at what he does, bà Aldemar continued. The captain values him. The other men trust him. She looked at her tea. People who are good and trusted attract a certain kind of attention. Not always the kind they want.
Élodie had gone still in the way Vera had begun to recognize over these past days — not tense, not rigid, but gathered, all her attention quietly collected in one direction. She said: what kind of attention.
The kind that is not welcome, bà Aldemar said. There are men who do not like to see someone younger and better regarded than themselves. This is true on land and equally true on water. She looked at Vera. You know something of this.
A little, Vera said. Not much.
It was the truth. She knew the outline — a man on a previous route who had taken a strong dislike to Søren and had done something about that dislike that went beyond merely unpleasant. She did not know the details. Bà Aldemar had not offered them and Vera had not pressed. Pressing felt like trespassing on something that was not hers to enter.
Bà Aldemar moved on from it as she moved on from most things she had said what she intended to say about — setting it aside cleanly and without ceremony. She asked Élodie about the plans for the clinic, about the building on the east road, about what she had found in the trấn after so many years away. Élodie answered and asked her own questions in return and the conversation found its footing again. Tea was drunk, the stove ticked, the afternoon light through the yellow curtains shifted its angle as the sun moved west.
Vera sat and held her cup and thought about Søren on a boat with people who did not wish him well. She thought about it the way she thought about things that worried her — trying to locate the variable she had any power over. She had no power over the water or the men on it. She had very little power over most things. She had been making peace with this for a long time and had not entirely succeeded.
She looked at the photograph once more.
Three seconds. Then she looked away.
Bà Aldemar stood with the careful deliberateness of someone whose joints required negotiation, crossed to the cabinet in the corner, and opened the lower drawer. She looked through it with the focused efficiency of someone who knows what they are looking for and is only uncertain of its precise location.
She came back with a piece of paper.
Vera recognized what it was before bà Aldemar held it out. Thin paper, lined, covered in the musical notation that was entirely Søren's own — partly what his mother had taught him, partly a system he had developed over years of solitary practice, a hybrid that looked almost like standard notation and was not. The ink was dark in some places and faint in others, the mark of something written over time rather than in a single sitting.
He left this last time, bà Aldemar said. She held it toward Vera. If you see him before I do, give it to him. He will want it back.
Vera took it.
She did not look at it. It was not hers to look at. She folded it once and put it in the pocket of her coat and felt Élodie watching her do this and kept her eyes on bà Aldemar.
Of course, she said. I will give it to him.
They left shortly after. Bà Aldemar stood in the doorway as they went down the path and called after them to give her regards to their families, and then the door was closed and they were on the road.
The afternoon had cooled. The sun lower, the shadows longer, the light now that particular shade between gold and grey that came in the last hour before dark. They walked and did not speak for a while.
Then Élodie said, not looking at her: what did bà Aldemar mean? About people not leaving good people alone.
Vera looked at the road.
There is someone on the boat who does not like Søren, she said. Or there was — on a previous route. Something happened. Bà Aldemar mentioned it once, briefly, without details.
Is he in danger, Élodie asked.
The question was quiet and direct and without any of the careful lightness of the earlier questions. Vera noticed the difference and filed it away.
I do not know, she said honestly. Bà Aldemar worries. She is his mother and she is permitted to worry. But I do not know enough to say whether the worry is proportionate.
Élodie nodded. Then: she looked at you when she said it. About good people attracting attention.
She knows I know about it. A little. Vera paused. Not enough to be useful.
Élodie did not ask anything further. Vera had learned, over these past days, to recognize this as the sign not that she had stopped thinking but that she had begun thinking more carefully.
They walked a little further before Élodie spoke again.
Do you remember, she said, the winter we built that thing in the snow. She said it in the slightly tentative way of someone testing whether a shared memory is actually shared or whether it has been altered by distance.
The fortress, Vera said. Which was not a fortress.
It was completely lopsided, Élodie agreed. One side was nearly a meter taller than the other. She paused. Søren kept insisting it was structural. That it was meant to be that way.
He said it gave us a tactical advantage, Vera said. On the uphill side.
I believed him, Élodie said. I spent twenty years believing there was genuine military logic to it. Vera — he made it up entirely, didn't he.
Completely, Vera said.
They both laughed — the brief helpless laugh of people who have been fooled by the same person and are only now comparing notes.
The laughter faded and they walked in the easier silence that laughter left behind. Somewhere behind them, the lamp in bà Aldemar's window was still burning.
He was always doing that, Vera said, after a while. Making things up and then holding to them so steadily that you believed them. Not lies, exactly. More like — he decided something was true and then acted as if it were until it became true.
Élodie considered this. Or until you stopped caring whether it was true.
Yes, Vera said. That too.
She did not say anything further. She had not meant to say as much as she had. It was the laughter that had done it — the particular loosening that came with remembering something stupid and good from a long time ago.
She put her hands back in her pockets. Her right hand found the edge of the folded paper.
Did he always play music, Élodie asked.
He always had music in him, Vera said carefully. I do not know if play is the right word for it. It was not something he practiced. It was more like something that came out when he was not thinking about it. His mother had an old piano, but the keys stuck and he could not get anyone to repair it, so he would play the ones that worked and skip the ones that did not. She stopped. It sounded like music with holes in it. It still sounded like music.
Élodie was quiet for a moment.
The accordion, she said, finally. She said it in the way she had said it the other day — carefully, as a statement rather than a question, placing something down to see how it looked from a slight distance.
Yes, Vera said. The accordion.
She did not say anything else. She did not ask where Élodie had heard one. She did not need to ask, and she thought they both knew she did not need to ask, and she thought the fact that neither of them was saying the thing they both knew was a choice they were each making — independently, in parallel, for reasons that were probably similar and that probably neither of them would have been able to state clearly if pressed.
The road split ahead.
They parted at the turning toward their respective homes with the brief unselfconsciousness of people who do not need to make goodbyes significant. Vera watched Élodie go for a moment and then turned and took the long way home, along the river road, in the growing dark.
The paper in her pocket was very light. She was aware of it the whole way — not its weight, which was nothing, but its presence. A piece of music Søren had written and left behind and would want returned.
She had not looked at it. She would give it to him when she saw him, which would be soon, which she was and was not ready for in roughly equal measure.
The river moved beside her in the dark, carrying whatever it carried, going wherever it went.
She walked home thinking about the way Élodie had gone still when bà Aldemar mentioned danger. She walked home thinking about the photograph on the third shelf. She walked home thinking about the fold of the paper against her fingers and the music on it that she had not read and would not read and would give back without reading.
The trấn settled into its evening around her. Lights in windows. Smoke from chimneys. The particular quiet of a place that has found its rhythm for the night and is following it without requiring any help.
She put her hand in her pocket and felt the edge of the folded paper and walked the last stretch home.
