She holds my hand the whole walk back to the hotel.
I know what this costs her — the specific calculation of someone who does not, as a rule, require holding. She held my hand in the car after Belgrade when the car was driving fast. She held it on the flight back from Belgrade when I was sleeping. She holds it now, on the sidewalk, with her face half-turned away from me so I cannot see it properly in the specific way of a person who is managing what I am going to see.
She cannot manage it indefinitely.
I know this because I know the quality of her management by now — four months of watching it work and knowing where its limits are. I also know that she has been managing much harder things than a bruise and a two-block walk. She has been managing since she was eleven years old. The managing is not the thing I am worried about. — the specific point at which it holds and the specific point at which it requires something to hold it up. She is at the second point. She is doing it anyway.
I let her.
This is what she asked for, three blocks ago when she said *not here.* Not now, not on the sidewalk, not with the city watching. Later, in a room. I gave her that and I am giving it to her for the duration of the walk and when we get to the room I am going to ask her to turn around.
The hotel room is two blocks from her father's building. We walk in silence. I do not ask. She does not offer. The city does what the city does and neither of us looks at the other.
In the elevator she faces forward. I face forward. The numbers count up.
On the eighth floor she shifts — barely, a degree, the specific movement of someone deciding to take a thing that is available to them. Her shoulder against mine. I put my hand at her back and we stand like that until the doors open.
This is, in the specific language of what we have built, its own kind of thing. Two people in an elevator, shoulder to shoulder, going up to the room where the next part begins.
Neither of us says anything. There is nothing that needs saying.
---
The room.
She crosses to the window. She stands with her back to me in the specific posture she uses when she is deciding whether to show me something. I know this posture. I have been reading it since the office in Monaco when she told me she had done her own analysis of the Malta situation and had two questions.
"Turn around," I say.
She does.
---
The bruise is on the left cheek, just below the cheekbone — not from a fist, the specific pattern of an open hand, which is in some ways worse because open-handed is contemptuous in a way that a fist is not. It has been developing for thirty minutes. By morning it will be the full purple-red of a thing that went in deep.
I look at it.
I have been in this world for twenty-eight years. I have seen worse — I am not unacquainted with the physical residue of violence. What I am not prepared for is the specific quality of seeing it on her face. The left cheek. The cheekbone I have held in my hands. The face I have been reading for four months with the specific attention of someone who is building a life around the person attached to it.
I am aware of my hands, which I am keeping at my sides. I am aware of the jaw, which has set. I am aware of the specific quality of what is in me right now, which is not the operational anger — not the cold version, the one I use when the calculation requires it — but the other kind. The kind that does not have a strategic application.
She is watching me manage it. I know this because she is doing what she does when she is reading me — the level gaze, the stillness, the quality of absolute attention.
"I'm fine," she says.
"Don't," I say.
A pause. "Costa."
"Tell me what happened."
She tells me.
Sitting on the edge of the bed with her hands folded in her lap, the composed version, the version that processes by reporting. I have watched this version for four months — the specific economy of it, the way she narrates the hard things as if they are operational rather than personal because that is the only distance that makes them narratable.
She walks me through the twelve minutes. and what he said and what she said and the Kozlov family and *that is not relevant* and *I love him* and the specific thirty-second sequence that followed.
She tells me all of it.
When she finishes I am standing at the window where she was standing a few minutes ago, and I look at the city and I say nothing for a while.
I think about the first time I heard her voice — the call from Lorenzo, three months before Monaco, *we're considering the Darmos girl.* I think about the file I was given, the photographs, the specific assessment of her value to the alliance. I think about how it never once occurred to me, reading that file, that the man who built it would one day stand in his study and hit her.
I think: I should have thought of it. I knew what the letters said about her mother. I knew what Theron Darmos was. I let the operational frame obscure the rest of it.
I think: I cannot fix that. I can address what comes next.
I look at the city. At the fourteen floors of building between this room and his study. At the specific cold grey quality of the December air that separates us from him.
Then I take out my phone.
Then I take out my phone.
I call Damian.
---
He picks up on the second ring.
I have thought about what to say. Not long — thirty seconds, while she was telling me the account — but enough to know that I am not going to perform this call. I am going to say exactly what happened because Damian deserves the exact version and because anything else would be managing the information the way her father manages everything, and I am not going to do that.
"Your father," I say, "hit your sister this morning."
The silence on the other end is the specific silence of information arriving in a specific location — not surprise exactly, but the specific quality of something that was feared being confirmed. He has been, I understand, waiting for some version of this call for a long time.
"How bad," he says.
"Bruising. Left cheek. She is fine."
"I'm coming —"
"She will tell me if she wants you here," I say. I look at her. She nods, once, which means: yes, let him come. "Come. But give us an hour."
A pause. "Costa."
"Yes."
"Your father just declared war on me," I say.
A longer pause. "You're not going to —"
"Not without her permission," I say. "But he's going to understand what it costs to put a hand on her. One way or another."
A pause. I hear Damian breathing. Then: "You know he'll see it as escalation."
"Good," I say.
"The Kozlov approach suggests he has a contingency. If you move on him directly —"
"I know. Which is why I said *not without her permission.* She gets to decide what happens to her father. I am not going to take that from her." A pause. "But I want him to know I know. I want him to understand that the geometry has changed. He is not going to touch her again and believe no one noticed."
Damian processes this. "I'll be there in an hour."
He hangs up.
I put the phone in my pocket. I turn from the window. She is looking at me with the expression that is reading my face — the specific quality of someone who has been building a file on me for four months and is making a new entry.
"The war thing," she says.
"Yes."
"That was for Damian."
"No. That was true. What your father did this morning was not a family matter. It was not a negotiating position. It was —" I stop. Find the right words. "It was him doing to you what he did to your mother. And I am not going to be the person who was in a room where that happened and did nothing."
I think about a boy at fourteen in a hospital making a promise. About *I will not be him. I will not do to anyone what he did to you.* I think about what it means that the promise extended beyond what I do to another person — that it extends to what I allow to happen to the person who is mine.
Theron Darmos hit her.
He is going to understand the cost of that. Not today, not by my hands, not the way I am thinking about it right now with the jaw set and the hands at my sides. But he is going to understand it.
She looks at me. "You weren't in the room."
"I know. I was three blocks away."
The specific quality of her face shifts.
"Costa," she says.
"I know," I say. "Three blocks was the agreement and three blocks was right. I am not angry about three blocks."
"What are you angry about."
"The specific person who required three blocks in the first place."
She looks at her hands. At both rings. At the bruise that I am trying to look at and simultaneously having difficulty looking at.
"Sit with me," she says.
I cross the room.
She is sitting on the edge of the bed with her hands in her lap and the composed face and the bruise and the specific quality of a woman who has done the thing that needed to be done today and is now in the room where the doing has landed and is letting herself be in it.
I sit beside her. She leans — the degree she allows herself with exactly two people — and I put my arm around her, careful of the bruise, the specific geography of her face that I am going to be careful of for the next week. She puts her head against my shoulder.
We sit.
"Tomorrow," she says.
"Tomorrow."
"He doesn't change the plan."
"No. He doesn't change the plan."
"Good."
We sit in the December hotel room with the city outside and Damian an hour away and the war still proceeding and her father in a study fourteen floors above us doing whatever he does when he has done something that cannot be undone.
I think: after tomorrow.
---
That night, late, she wakes.
Not the nightmare quality — not the irregular breathing and the specific tension. She simply wakes, the way some people wake in the hours between two and four, and she turns, and I am awake too, which she probably knows.
"Costa."
"Yes."
"I said *Papa* today. The last time."
I am quiet for a moment. "I know."
"It felt —" She pauses. "Different than I expected. I expected it to feel like relief. It felt like — like setting something down that I did not know I was carrying."
I think about this. About the specific weight of a word used for a person for the last time. About fourteen years of a word I have not used either — the one in Italian that means the same thing and that I stopped being able to use when I was fourteen and the person it applied to made himself impossible.
"Yes," I say.
She is quiet. Then: "He's going to try to use the Kozlov approach as leverage. Against the Accardi alliance, against the operation."
"I know."
"He can't."
"No."
"Because we won't let him."
"Because we won't let him," I say.
She settles. I put my hand over hers.
In a few hours it will be morning.
I think about what morning means today. The plan executing. Adrik arriving. The forty-minute window. Costa on a rooftop two blocks away with a shoulder that is healing and a sightline through the atrium glass.
I think: we planned for this. We planned for every element of it.
I think: we did not plan for my father, and my father happened, and the plan is still the plan.
I think: there is a bruise on my face that is going to be purple-red by morning and I am going to put on a scarf and execute the plan regardless, and the bruise on my face is going to be a fact that my father has to live with for the rest of his life. He put it there. It is his.
In a few hours it will be morning and the plan will execute and the war will be at its last stage.
Tonight: the room. The December quiet. Both of us awake in the dark, deciding together how the next thing goes.
I think: after tomorrow. After the war. The specific matter of Theron Darmos — not handled by force, not handled the way I am currently considering, but handled — that is the next thing.
I think: she will tell me how.
She has been telling me how since Monaco, in the specific language she uses for things she has already thought through — the direct version, the one without cushioning, the one that means she has arrived at a conclusion and is trusting me with it.
She will tell me how to handle her father. We will handle him the way we have been handling everything: together, in the right register, with the correct application of whatever the situation requires.
But not tonight.
She always does.
---
Damian arrives in fifty-three minutes.
He comes through the door with the specific quality of a man who has been managing his face in the elevator — the composed version, the version that will be most useful to her — and he holds it for approximately three seconds after he sees her.
Then he crosses the room and he holds her. The specific hold of thirty years of knowing someone — long, his chin on the top of her head, her face turned into his shoulder. He holds her and she lets him and I stand at the window and I give them this minute because it is theirs.
He looks at me over her head.
I nod. He nods. The specific communication of two men who have been learning to trust each other since Belgrade and who currently have the same view of what comes next.
"I'm fine," she says, into his shoulder.
"I know," he says. "You've been saying that all day."
"I mean it all day."
"I know you do."
He holds her for another minute. Then he steps back. He looks at her face. The specific quality of a brother looking at a bruise that was put there by their father — I watch it land in him and I watch him manage it the way she manages things: filed, to be addressed, not now.
"Tomorrow," he says. To her. Then to me. "You have a plan."
"We have the plan," she says. "Theron doesn't change it."
Damian looks between us. Something in his expression settles — the specific settling of a man who has updated his view of a situation and found the update acceptable.
"All right," he says. "Then tomorrow."
He stays for an hour. We go over the final public move logistics — not because there is anything to adjust, but because the doing of it is its own form of preparation. Going over the known thing. Making it solid.
When he leaves he hugs her again at the door. He says something to her in Greek — low, too low for me to hear from across the room — and she says something back and he nods and goes.
She turns. She finds me watching from the window.
"He said: *you found the right one,*" she says.
In Greek. The specific Greek of the family, the one that belongs to long dinners and arguments about politics and the particular dialect of people who grew up in the same household speaking the same language.
I look at her.
"I think he might be right," she says.
I think: she is right.
I think: after tomorrow.
