The Abyssal Frontier had no sunsets. There was only a dull grey light bleeding through the breath of monsters, and the smell of blood that had dried stiff into Vane Blackthorne's armor for three days straight.
He stood at the center of a ring of seventeen Rift-Spawn, faceless things with nothing but cracked, ash-black mouths splitting open across skin like burnt stone. His greatsword was chipped in three places. His left arm had gone numb. And somewhere in his chest, something was breaking apart, slow and agonizing, as if someone had packed a fistful of glass sand into his heart and was squeezing it shut.
Bloodburst.
He knew the name. Every high-ranking Vanguard did. It was the death that killed the strongest in the most humiliating way possible — not on an enemy's blade, but from inside your own body, when raw magic left to fester too long crystallized into a Black Star Shard and choked the bloodstream until the heart had no room left to beat.
Vane had watched it happen to someone else. Constantine, commander of the vanguard company, three years ago, had dropped in the middle of camp without a single wound on him, black blood spilling from the corners of his mouth like spilled ink. No one had been able to save him. There had been no one to save.
He still remembered that night clearly — the campfire flickering, the shouts for a field medic ringing across the camp, the raw helplessness on the faces of men who had stood beside Constantine on the battlefield for ten years. No mage, no elixir, could dissolve a Black Star Shard once it had crystallized far enough. All anyone could do was wait, and watch, and remember. From that night on, Vane had promised himself that when his turn came, he would die standing, on a battlefield, weapon in hand — not curled up in some dark tent waiting for an ending nobody could stop.
He thought, perhaps, tonight was that night.
There was a strange sort of peace in that thought, even now, even surrounded. Twenty-eight years old, and he had already outlived every man who had ever called him friend. The crown had made sure of that — feeding him into every impossible campaign, every suicide posting, every battle no one else wanted, because a Marshal who could survive anything was worth more to them alive than any ten conscripts, and worth even more, perhaps, as a legend once he was finally dead. Better to die here, among monsters he understood, than in some gilded hall being thanked for his service by men who had never once asked if he wanted to give it.
"Not today," he muttered to himself, voice ragged, and brought his blade down across a Rift-Spawn lunging at him.
His heart was hammering somewhere around one hundred and ninety. He could feel it — like some animal clawing at his ribs from the inside, every beat a fresh knife. His vision had started to blur at the edges. His right arm, the one holding the sword, was going numb too.
This was not a fight he could win through strength anymore.
And then, in the middle of that searing pain, something else happened — something unlike anything he had experienced in twenty-eight years of carrying a weapon.
---
In a place that was not any place at all — not light, not dark, without weight — Eric Sterling opened his eyes.
The last thing he remembered was the glare of surgical lights overhead, the steady beep of a monitor, and a crushing pain in his chest so sudden he'd had to grab the edge of the operating table to stay upright — the very table where he'd been holding a scalpel over his own patient a moment before. He remembered thinking, quite objectively, quite clinically, that this was almost certainly an acute myocardial infarction, that he'd ignored too many warning signs over the last six months because of a packed surgical schedule, that perhaps this was the price of always putting the patient before himself.
Then there had been nothing.
No tunnel of light like people always described. No faces of loved ones waiting. Just a silent, immeasurable emptiness, where Eric — if it still made sense to call whatever-used-to-be-him by that name — had stopped perceiving time, space, or his own existence in any way he'd ever understood.
And now there was this — if "this" was even a word that meant anything.
Before him — if he still had "eyes" to see with — hung a stream of data that shouldn't exist: flickering numbers, red graphs spiking erratically, and at the center of it all, one enormous, violent heartbeat threatening to tear itself apart.
*Heart rate: 189 bpm. Blood pressure: unreadable — too high to register on any standard scale. Aortic obstruction: severe. Risk of cardiac rupture: extreme.*
Twenty years of practicing cardiothoracic surgery gave Eric no time to panic, no time to wonder where he was, what he was, or how he could possibly "see" another person's vital signs as though they were displayed on some invisible monitor wrapped around him.
There was a patient dying. That was all that mattered.
"All right," he said — or thought, or both, he couldn't tell anymore, since he didn't seem to have a mouth to speak with — "all right, let me see what we're dealing with."
---
Vane froze mid-swing.
There was a voice. Clear, cold, precise in a way that felt wrong — not the shrieking of monsters, not the shouting of soldiers behind him, but a voice ringing out from *inside* his own chest, as though someone were standing right beside his heart, speaking.
For one moment, he thought he'd gone mad. Or died. Possibly both.
Then the pain hit — not the familiar ache of Bloodburst, but something new, sharp and strange, like a current of cold water surging backward through his veins, threading through every clogged inch of blocked blood vessel.
His body reacted on instinct — resistance. This was something foreign, an intrusion, and every survival reflex in him screamed to push it out, to fight back.
*"Don't fight me,"* the voice snapped, sharper now, more a medical order than a plea. *"I know you don't understand what's happening, but if you keep clenching like that I can't clear your aorta, and you will be dead in under two minutes."*
Two minutes.
Vane had faced death enough times to know when a warning was real.
A Rift-Spawn lunged from his left. He turned, struck, dodged — his body moving on the combat instinct bred into his bones even as his mind reeled from that inexplicable voice. Black blood sprayed across his armor.
*"Good,"* the voice continued, eerily calm amid the chaos. *"Keep moving. I need about thirty more seconds to liquefy the crystal fragment compressing your left ventricle."*
"What—" Vane snarled through gritted teeth, breath ragged, "—the hell are you?"
There was no immediate answer. Only a strange sensation spreading through his chest — a thin, cool membrane pressing gently against his heart, easing open blood vessels that had seized shut.
---
This was the moment Eric — if this really was Eric, if "Eric" still meant anything in his current state — felt something he had never experienced in his entire medical career.
He wasn't just seeing this patient's vitals. He was *feeling* them. The crushing pain in the chest wasn't something he observed from a safe distance through a monitor — it was his own pain, shared, raw, with no clinical distance left to shield him from it.
And alongside the pain was something else. A loneliness so dense it nearly had a shape, like a sheet of ice sealed over a vast, old hollow, one long accustomed to no one being there when everything fell apart.
Eric didn't have time to examine that feeling. But he noted it — the way a doctor notes an unusual symptom, filed away for later, once the patient was stable.
*Patient first. It's always the patient first.*
He pushed deeper into the strange structure surrounding him — something he would have called, in medical terms, a semi-liquid form, capable of penetrating tissue without causing damage, a capability that shouldn't exist under any biological law he'd ever studied. But right now, he had no luxury for questioning physics. He had a heart on the verge of rupture, and a body fighting to expel him at the exact moment it needed him most.
"Listen to me," he said, trying to hold his voice — if it was still his voice — steady and clear, the same tone he used to calm patients before major surgery. "I'm not going to hurt you. I'm trying to save you. But I need you to stop resisting for thirty seconds. Just thirty seconds."
There was a moment of silence — long enough that Eric began to fear he'd lost the patient.
Then, slowly, the clenching resistance began to ease.
---
Vane didn't understand why he trusted a disembodied voice speaking from inside his own heart. Maybe because he had no other choice left. Maybe because in that voice — cold, foreign as it was — there was something he rarely heard from anyone in his life: a concern that asked for nothing in return.
He let go.
Not of his weapon — the blade stayed in his hand, still striking, still parrying — but of the deepest part of himself that had always fought alone, always shouldered everything by itself, always told itself that no one else could be trusted.
The sensation that followed was almost unbearable — a cool current flooding down his veins, a pressure that had been strangling his heart suddenly dissolving, as though someone had just cut loose a rope that had been cinched around his chest for months without him ever noticing.
His vision cleared. Feeling returned to his right arm. His pulse, he could feel it, was slowing — 189, 170, 150 — settling into a rhythm his body could actually endure.
And then, from somewhere deep in his palm, shards of red crystal began pushing up through his skin, crystallizing into the shape of a new greatsword — sharper, heavier, glowing with a red light like fresh blood under the Abyss's pale, grey moon.
Vane looked at the new weapon in his hand for less than a second before pure combat instinct took over completely.
He spun, swinging the crystal blade in a wide arc, and the seventeen Rift-Spawn — now only eight — shrieked as the edge sliced through their charred hides as easily as through water.
The power running through his veins was clean now, strong, no longer choked by anything. Every strike was a declaration. Every step, a punishment.
When the last monster collapsed, dissolving into black ash under the moonlight, Vane stood in the middle of a ring of corpses, breathing hard, his heart beating steady for the first time in months, feeling — strangely — lighter than he could remember feeling in a very long time.
Somewhere behind him, a young sergeant was already shouting orders to regroup, to check the perimeter, to send word back to camp that the Marshal still lived — routine, practiced words that meant, this time, something had gone very differently than expected. None of them had seen a Vanguard survive a Bloodburst this advanced. None of them had seen a weapon like the one still glowing faintly in his grip.
The soldiers behind him began to cheer, their shouts echoing across the battlefield littered with dissolving monster remains. But Vane barely heard any of it. He stood there, the crystal blade hanging at his side, staring at his own hand as though it belonged to someone else. Black blood dripped from the blade onto the glass-sand ground, and in that rare, quiet moment, he could feel it clearly — a second heartbeat, fainter than his own, but present, like an echo, a shadow, another life nesting inside his chest.
---
Inside that chest, Eric Sterling watched the heart rate settle, the blood pressure return to something bearable, and allowed himself — if "himself" still existed in any meaningful sense — to let out a breath he wasn't sure he had lungs to take.
*Patient stable,* he noted, out of a professional habit too deeply ingrained to break. *Heart rate: 88. Blood pressure: within normal range, though slightly elevated. Aortic obstruction: significantly reduced, though not entirely cleared — will need monitoring.*
Only then, in the first quiet moment since he'd "woken up" in this nameless place, did Eric let himself face the question he'd deliberately pushed aside through the entire fight: *Where am I? What am I? And why am I alive — if this can even be called being alive — inside the chest of a man I've never met?*
He had no answer. Only data, and a vague but persistent feeling that somehow, whatever came next for him — whatever that meant — was tied to keeping this heart beating.
There was a strange comfort in that, too, however small. Eric had spent the last decade of his life measuring his worth in exactly this currency — a heartbeat sustained, a life extended, a chart that read *stable* instead of *critical*. If this was to be the whole of his existence now, some voice lodged inside a stranger's ribs with nothing but a monitor made of light and a stubborn set of surgical instincts, then at least it was work he already knew how to do. At least it was a kind of purpose, even if he couldn't yet explain how, or why, or what it would cost him.
---
The frontline camp of the Abyssal Frontier held nothing of comfort. Threadbare canvas tents were pitched loosely around a campfire, the smell of smoke tangled with blood and rusted metal. In the distance, the black mountain range ringing the border rose like enormous fangs biting into the night sky, and the air still carried a trace of sulfur from the rift where the Rift-Spawn poured through every night. This was where Vane had lived for eight years, where he had learned to expect nothing from tomorrow beyond simply being alive to see it.
As Vane walked through the camp gates, the sentries on duty straightened at once, eyes widening at the glowing red crystal blade still faintly lit in his hand.
"Marshal," one of them said, voice shaking with a mix of awe and confusion, "that weapon... where did it come from?"
Vane didn't answer. He didn't know how to, yet.
He walked straight into his command tent, dropped into the rough wooden chair, and for the first time in years, allowed himself a moment of complete stillness — not because he wanted to, but because he needed time to understand what had just happened to his own body.
His hand, almost without thinking, settled over his left chest.
Still there. That strange sensation — not quite pain, not quite comfort — a presence, gentle but certain, as if someone were quietly standing guard right inside his ribs.
"Still there," he said quietly, less a question than a confirmation to himself.
The answer came immediately, clear and cold enough to startle him:
*"Patient Blackthorne."*
Vane went rigid, one hand still pressed flat over his own sternum as though he could physically hold the voice in place, keep it from vanishing the way everything good in his life eventually did.
*"Your blood pressure is still too high,"* the voice continued, unshaken, carrying a precision so dry Vane had never heard its like from any mage, healer, or spirit in all of Astoria. *"Sit down and breathe deeply. You just survived a near-fatal Bloodburst less than ten minutes ago — your body needs time to recover, not more strain."*
"I am sitting," Vane replied, voice rough with a mixture of astonishment and — though he'd never admit it — something close to relief. "What are you? A god? A ghost? Or have I finally lost my mind?" He almost hoped it was the last one. Madness, at least, would be a familiar enemy — something he could fight, or outlast, the way he had outlasted everything else.
A brief pause. Then the voice spoke again, this time with something like... hesitation. Something very human, buried beneath the clinical shell.
*"I don't know exactly what I am,"* it said. *"But I know I'm a doctor. And right now, you're my patient — even if neither of us understands why. My name is Eric Sterling."*
Vane sat in the dark of his tent, hand still resting on his chest, feeling his own heartbeat — steady now, stable, alive in a way he had never felt it in twenty-eight years of life — and, for the first time since Constantine had died in front of him three years ago, he felt he was not entirely alone in this war anymore.
It was a strange feeling, strange enough to be almost frightening. In eight years at the Abyssal Frontier, and longer still under the shadow of a crown that had always treated him more as a useful weapon than a man, Vane had grown used to no one truly caring whether he survived the night — so long as he could still lift a blade the next morning. The crown sent him to the front because he was useful. His soldiers respected him because he was strong. But no one, not since his mother died, had ever asked plainly whether his heart was all right, simply because it mattered.
This strange voice — Eric Sterling, or whatever it was residing in his chest — had just done exactly that.
"Eric Sterling," he repeated, testing the name on his tongue like testing a new weapon. "Well then, doctor. I suppose I owe you my life."
*"You don't owe me anything,"* Eric answered at once, his voice still carrying that clinical precision, but with something softer underneath it that neither of them was ready to name. *"I was just doing my job. But if you really want to repay me, next time your heart rate goes over 180, sit down immediately instead of swinging that sword for three more minutes."*
A rough, tired, but genuine laugh broke out of Vane's throat — a sound none of his soldiers would have recognized, because none of them had ever heard it.
"I'll keep that in mind," he said, and leaned back in the chair, eyes drifting up to the canvas ceiling stirring faintly in the night wind of the Abyss.
For a long moment neither of them said anything else. It was, Vane thought, the strangest silence he had shared with anyone in years — not the silence of soldiers too exhausted to speak, not the silence of officers who resented him, but something almost companionable, if such a word could possibly apply to a man and the ghost of a doctor sharing one chest. He found, to his own quiet surprise, that he did not want to break it.
Outside, the soldiers' murmurs about the glowing crystal blade drifted on. But inside the tent, between a Marshal who had once believed he would die alone and a foreign spirit who had just woken inside a body that wasn't his own, something new had just been set in motion — not quite a vow, not quite a pact, but the beginning of both.
And in that darkness, Eric Sterling — once the finest cardiothoracic surgeon of a world that no longer existed for him — found himself wondering, for the first time since waking into this strange existence, whether keeping this heart beating might be the one thing keeping his own consciousness from dissolving into nothing.
He had no answer.
There was a part of him — the part that still remembered, with painful clarity, the feeling of working himself to death on his own operating table, the part long used to always being the one who gave and rarely the one asked after — that wanted to pull back, to keep the safe clinical distance between doctor and patient he had always maintained throughout his career. Attachment was a risk. Attachment meant that when it was lost, the pain would cut deeper. And Eric, even in a body not his own, even existing in a way he didn't yet understand, could feel with unsettling clarity that his own consciousness might dissolve at any moment — perhaps the very moment this heart beat its last.
But when he felt Vane Blackthorne's heartbeat, steady and slow and safe beneath his invisible hand, when he heard that tired, genuine laugh ring out in the darkness of the tent — a sound this man clearly let almost no one hear — Eric thought, perhaps, just perhaps, that wasn't a question he needed to fear right now.
It was too soon to name it. But it had already begun.
You've reached the end of this chapter
