The morning began before dawn, with Marek pacing the drill yard barking last corrections at recruits who already knew their formations cold, out of nothing but nervous energy that needed somewhere to go.
"Stop fussing," Vane told him, watching from the command tent's entrance, Eric's steady presence a quiet counterweight to his own carefully banked tension. "They're ready. You've drilled them into the ground twice over."
"I'll stop fussing when there's an envoy standing in this yard and not a moment before." Marek adjusted a strap on his own uniform that didn't need adjusting. "You remember the story."
"I remember the story."
"And you," Marek added, addressing the air somewhere near Vane's chest with the specific, deliberate casualness he'd adopted these last weeks, "keep him from doing anything today that reads as more than 'unusual battlefield phenomenon, currently under control.' No heroics. No overcorrecting because you're nervous about being caught in a lie."
*I'll do my best,* Eric said, and Vane relayed it dryly, watching the recruits run through their formations one last time. *Though I'd point out that keeping Vane from heroics has a rather poor success rate historically.*
Marek's answering grin was fleeting but genuine, gone by the time the first horn sounded from the eastern watchtower — riders approaching, right on schedule.
Envoy Halstrom Vire arrived exactly on schedule, which Eric noted immediately as its own kind of statement — a man who traveled four days across hostile frontier territory and still managed to appear at the garrison gates at the precise hour stated in his own letter was a man who valued the appearance of control more than most things.
He was younger than Eric had expected, perhaps thirty-five, dressed in Chancellery blue with a cut too fine for frontier travel, and he swung down from his horse with the unhurried economy of a man who had never once doubted his own authority to be wherever he currently stood, boots settling into the frost-hardened mud as though the Frontier itself owed him solid footing.
"Marshal Blackthorne." His bow was correct to the exact degree required and not one degree more. "The Chancellery thanks you for your hospitality on such short notice."
"Envoy Vire." Vane's own bow matched it precisely, courtesy measured out like medicine — enough to avoid offense, nothing that could be mistaken for warmth. "We've prepared quarters and a full accounting of garrison operations, as requested."
*He's cataloguing everything,* Eric observed, watching — figuratively, always figuratively — the way Vire's eyes moved across the assembled garrison, the drill yard, the state of the fortifications, with the particular thoroughness of a man building a mental ledger he intended to balance later, in private, against numbers only he could see. *Watch his hands. He touches things he's actually curious about. He hasn't touched anything yet.*
*Noted,* Vane said, silent, for Eric alone, before switching smoothly back to the performance required of him. "If you'd like to rest first, Envoy, or begin the inspection immediately—"
"Immediately, I think." Vire's smile was pleasant and entirely without warmth. "The Chancellery's time is rather precious this season, Marshal. I'm sure you understand."
They walked the perimeter first — fortifications, supply stores, the granary with its rationed stores that were, Eric knew, already stretched thinner than the official ledgers admitted. Vire lingered longest at the infirmary, running a finger along the edge of a supply shelf with the same clinical thoroughness Eric might once have applied to a chart, asking pointed questions about casualty rates, recovery times, the frequency of unusual wounds.
"Your recovery statistics have improved rather dramatically this season," Vire observed, studying the infirmary log with open interest. "Faster healing times across the board, not merely for the Marshal himself. Is there an explanation for that, or should I simply note it as fortunate circumstance?"
*Careful,* Eric warned. *He's building a pattern, not just chasing a rumor. He's noticed the bond's effects ripple outward, however slightly, to the men who serve closest to you.*
"Good physicians and a disciplined camp," Vane said, which was true enough not to register as evasion, though Eric felt the small, careful weight behind the words. "We've been fortunate this season in ways I don't fully take credit for."
"How modest." Vire set the log down, precisely where he'd found it. "The Chancellery does appreciate modesty, Marshal. Right up until it starts looking like something else."
Vane didn't answer that, and Vire didn't press further, moving on toward the drill yard with the unhurried patience of a man who had already gotten more out of a single glance at a supply log than most observers would have managed in a week. It was not until they reached the drill yard, and Vire paused to watch Corven and the other recruits running formation drills under Dessa's supervision, that his tone shifted.
"Impressive discipline, for a garrison that's suffered as many unexplained rift anomalies as yours has this season, wouldn't you agree." He said it lightly, watching the recruits rather than Vane, which Eric had already begun to recognize as a deliberate tactic — asking the real question while appearing to look elsewhere. "Two rifts in as many months, one of which apparently went silent under circumstances your report described as 'natural.' The Chancellery finds that word doing rather a lot of work, Marshal."
"Nature does what it does out here, Envoy. We don't pretend to understand all of it. We report what we observe."
"Of course." Vire's gaze slid, finally, toward Vane directly. "And what you observed regarding your own recent combat performance — the reports reaching the capital describe engagements that sound, forgive me, almost supernatural. A greatsword forged from crystal mid-battle. A shield that appeared from nowhere to save a recruit's life. Soldiers talk, Marshal, whatever discretion you've asked of them. I'd rather hear the account from you than assemble it from garrison gossip."
Eric felt Vane's pulse hold steady — the specific, practiced steadiness of a man who had spent a week rehearsing exactly this moment. *Now,* Eric said, quiet. *The story. Slow, unhurried, like it costs you nothing to admit.*
"There's truth in the gossip," Vane said, matching Eric's suggested cadence exactly. "During the skirmish that opened the second front, I sustained what should have been a fatal wound. What happened afterward, our garrison physician can't fully explain, and neither can I — but something bonded to me in that moment. A presence. It's stabilized what should have killed me, and in combat, it manifests as weaponry. Crystal, mostly. I don't fully understand the mechanism. I've simply learned to work with it, the way any soldier learns to work with an unexpected asset."
"A presence." Vire's eyebrows rose, polite interest doing nothing to disguise the calculation underneath it. "Does this presence have a name, Marshal?"
The question landed harder than its casual delivery suggested, and Eric felt the single, dangerous half-second where Vane's next word could unravel everything they'd built. *Careful,* Eric said. *Don't lie about my existing. Don't hand him my name either.*
"It doesn't introduce itself the way a person would," Vane said, which was, Eric thought with some private appreciation, a masterful piece of technically-true deflection. "It communicates. It has opinions, mostly about my health, which I find intrusive and occasionally useful. I haven't required more from it than that, and it hasn't offered."
"How convenient," Vire said, in a tone that suggested he found it anything but convenient at all. "The Institute has, as I understand it, certain historical interest in phenomena of exactly this description. Bonded consciousness. Battlefield spirits. I imagine they'd be eager to study the mechanism, purely for the Chancellery's defensive benefit, of course."
"I imagine they would," Vane said, flat, "which is precisely why I haven't volunteered the garrison as a research subject to anyone, Institute included, without direct orders from the Chancellery specifying the scope and safeguards of such study. I trust that request isn't unreasonable, given what the bond has already cost me to stabilize."
Vire's smile thinned, fractionally, the first real crack Eric had seen in the man's careful performance. "Not unreasonable at all, Marshal. Merely noted." He turned his attention back to the drill yard, watching Corven execute another pass. "I'd like to see a demonstration before I file my report. Something controlled. I understand there's rift activity within riding distance."
*He wants proof,* Eric said grimly. *And he's choosing the exact ground most likely to give him something worth reporting.*
"The nearest active rift is a half day's ride," Vane said, careful now, weighing each word before letting it leave his mouth. "I'd need to arrange an escort befitting Chancellery security protocols."
"Then arrange it," Vire said, pleasant again, the crack sealed back over as smoothly as it had opened. "Tomorrow, if the garrison can manage it. I find demonstrations so much more persuasive than reports, don't you, Marshal? Words can be shaped to say almost anything. A man's own body, under genuine stress, tends to tell a truer story."
---
Dinner that evening was a formal affair by garrison standards, which meant real chairs instead of benches and a tablecloth Marek had produced from some quartermaster's forgotten inventory. Vire ate with the fastidious economy of a man who considered frontier cuisine beneath comment, though he complimented it anyway, correctly, the way he seemed to do everything — precisely enough to satisfy propriety, not one degree warmer.
"Tell me, Marshal," he said, over the second course, "does your garrison physician have an opinion on your bonded condition? I understand from the infirmary log that a Dr. Sterling's name appears nowhere in your official records, and yet your own report credits a 'physician' with helping draft your correspondence to the Chancellery. I find the discrepancy curious."
Eric went very still, in the way that had nothing to do with muscles.
"Sterling was the name of the presence I described earlier," Vane said, slow, careful, threading a needle Eric hadn't seen coming. "It offered a name, eventually, when I asked directly. I used it in shorthand in my own private notes. I wasn't aware the Chancellery combed through personal correspondence quite so thoroughly, Envoy."
"The Chancellery combs through everything, Marshal. That's rather the point of an observation posting." Vire's eyes were sharp over the rim of his cup. "Sterling. An unusual name for a phenomenon with no discernible origin. Almost as if it once belonged to a person."
*He's testing whether you'll flinch,* Eric said, quiet and urgent. *Don't. Whatever you say next, say it like it costs you nothing.*
"Names are simply useful," Vane said, admirably level. "Whether it once belonged to something else isn't information I have, and isn't information I've thought it wise to pursue. I have a garrison to run and a war to fight, Envoy. I leave the philosophy of what my bond used to be to scholars with more leisure time than I possess."
Vire's mouth curved, not quite a smile. "Practical. I admire that in a Marshal, even when I suspect it as a convenient place to stop asking questions." He set his cup down. "Tomorrow's demonstration will clarify a great deal, I expect. I do hope, for your sake as much as the Chancellery's, that what I observe matches the modest picture you've painted tonight."
The rest of the meal passed in careful, unremarkable conversation about supply routes and troop rotations, and it was not until Vire finally withdrew, trailed by his own quiet attendant, that Vane allowed his shoulders to drop even a fraction.
---
That night, once Vire had retired to the guest quarters set aside for him, Vane sat on the edge of his cot with his head in his hands, the performance of the day finally allowed to drain out of him in private.
*You did well,* Eric said, gentle. *Better than well. You gave him almost nothing, and made it sound like generosity.*
"He knows there's more." Vane's voice was muffled, exhausted. "Every question was a probe. He's not fishing blind, Eric. Someone's already told him enough to know exactly where to press."
*I noticed that too.* Eric let the observation sit, unwelcome, between them. *Which means either the Institute has eyes inside this camp we haven't identified, or Vire's own sources reach further than a routine Chancellery observer's should.*
"Or both." Vane finally looked up, jaw tight. "Tomorrow he wants a demonstration at an active rift. That's not an inspection anymore. That's a controlled experiment, and we're the subjects."
*Then we control what he sees as tightly as we can.* Eric kept his voice steady, deliberately calm, the register he'd once used to talk panicking residents through their first real crisis. *No maximum output. No visible strain. Just enough to confirm the story we already told him, nothing that gives him a reason to escalate his report past 'unusual but manageable.'*
"And if the rift doesn't cooperate with our plan? They rarely have, lately."
*Then we improvise. Together. The way we've done everything else so far.* Eric let a thread of warmth into it, deliberate, an anchor point in a day that had asked too much composure of both of them. *You're not walking into that basin alone tomorrow, whatever Vire's watching for. I'll be right here. That much, at least, is not up for negotiation with anyone.*
Vane's hand came up, settling over his heart the way it always did now, some of the day's tension finally beginning to loosen. "I keep thinking I should be better at this by now. The performing. The careful half-truths. Eight years commanding this Frontier and I still hate every second of lying to a man's face, even when the lie's necessary."
*That's not a flaw, Vane. That's just proof you're not actually built for this kind of game — the political kind, the kind where truth is a resource to be rationed instead of a thing owed to people.* Eric let the observation land soft, affectionate rather than clinical. *It's one of the reasons I—* He stopped himself, and Vane, attentive even exhausted, caught the hitch immediately.
"One of the reasons you what?"
*One of the reasons I love you, since apparently we're being honest with each other and not with Chancellery envoys tonight.* Eric said it plainly, without the old hedges, because three weeks — no, longer now, closer to a month — of practice had worn the words smoother, easier to offer without flinching. *You'd rather lose a political game honestly than win it by becoming someone worth despising. That's rare. I'd know. I spent a career around people who'd made the opposite trade and called it pragmatism.*
Vane huffed something warm and tired that wasn't quite a laugh. "Romantic, in the middle of an Institute conspiracy."
*I contain multitudes. Also, sleep. Tomorrow's going to require every bit of composure either of us can manage, and Vire strikes me as the sort of man who notices exhaustion and files it as weakness.*
"Bossy," Vane murmured, but he was already lying back, already letting his eyes fall shut, the particular trust of a man who had learned, slowly and against every old instinct, that it was safe to stop watching the door once Eric was keeping watch instead.
"He knew your name," Vane said, quiet, into the dark, once the tent had gone still around them. "Sterling. He knew it before I gave it to him, I could feel it in the way he said it — not a guess, a confirmation of something he already had."
*I noticed.* Eric let the unease sit, honest, between them rather than smoothing it over with false reassurance. *That's not something a routine Chancellery observer should have. Someone briefed him. Possibly the same someone who's been circling that rift with a containment ritual thirty years out of date.*
"Which means whatever's happening here isn't just political curiosity anymore. It's coordinated." Vane's jaw tightened in the dark. "The Institute already knows you have a name. They might already know you were a person, before whatever brought you into me. That's not a rumor reaching the capital. That's someone with actual information feeding it to a Chancellery envoy on purpose."
*Then tomorrow matters more than we thought.* Eric kept his voice steady, deliberately so, an anchor for both of them. *Whatever Vire reports back becomes the official record the Institute works from next. We don't just need to look modest. We need to look like there's nothing left worth investigating.*
"And if there is something worth investigating? If this — whatever we are to each other — becomes visible in a way neither of us can control?"
*Then we adapt. The same way we've adapted to everything since the day I woke up in your chest mid-battle with no idea what either of us had just become.* Eric let warmth bleed through the words, deliberate, refusing to let fear be the only thing either of them carried into tomorrow. *Whatever Vire writes in his report, whatever the Institute already suspects — none of it changes what's true between us. That part was decided already. Ch.9, if you want a date for it.*
That surprised a real laugh out of Vane, low and startled in the dark. "Giving our own relationship a chapter number now?"
*Force of habit. I used to chart everything.*
"Ridiculous man."
*Ridiculous, devoted man,* Eric corrected, gentle, *currently very tired and about to have an extremely demanding day tomorrow. Sleep. I'll be right here, keeping watch on the parts of you that can't watch themselves.*
Vane's hand settled over his heart, familiar now as breathing, and within minutes his exhaustion won out over his worry, breath evening into the slow rhythm of real sleep.
Outside, the guest quarters that housed Envoy Vire stayed lit long past the hour any reasonable traveler would have retired, a thin line of lamplight visible beneath the tent flap, and Eric found himself wondering, in the last quiet moments before sleep finally claimed them both, exactly what report the envoy was already drafting, and to whom, beyond the Chancellery, it might eventually be shown.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The morning began before dawn, with Marek pacing the drill yard barking last corrections at recruits who already knew their formations cold, out of nothing but nervous energy that needed somewhere to go.
