The steward arrived without warning, on a grey morning three weeks after the courtship's careful, unhurried architecture had first been set in motion, which Marek flagged as its own kind of message the moment the man's carriage rolled through the garrison gates unannounced and uninvited.
"Lord Hollis's household steward," Marek reported, watching the finely dressed man dismount with the particular fussy disapproval of someone who found frontier dust personally offensive. "No advance letter. Says he's here to assess the courtship's progress on Lord Hollis's behalf, since his lordship couldn't be troubled to make the journey himself."
*That's not part of the plan Seraphine outlined,* Eric said, sharpening immediately. *An unannounced inspection means either Lord Hollis is genuinely impatient, or someone's whispered doubt into his ear about how sincere this courtship actually is.*
"Or both," Vane said, already composing his features into the careful, diplomatic mask he'd been practicing for weeks. "Let's find out which."
The steward — a narrow, precise man named Dressler who introduced himself with a bow calibrated exactly to the minimum courtesy his station required — toured the garrison with an expression that suggested every stone and tent fell short of some standard he'd expected a Marshal's household to meet. He asked pointed questions about correspondence frequency, about gifts sent and received, about whether the Marshal had made any personal visit plans to the Hollis estate, and Eric felt the careful architecture of their fiction being tested at every seam, one deliberate question at a time.
"Lord Hollis wonders," Dressler said, over a stiff, formal dinner that evening, "whether the Marshal's evident business managing this frontier leaves sufficient time for a courtship conducted with appropriate seriousness. Three letters in as many months strikes his lordship as somewhat sparse, for a man supposedly courting his daughter's hand."
*Careful,* Eric warned. *He's fishing for evidence this is exactly the stalling tactic it actually is.*
"The Frontier doesn't pause for personal matters, Master Dressler," Vane said, level. "I'd have thought Lord Hollis, having built his own fortune through considerable personal sacrifice, would understand a man's duties sometimes outpace his correspondence, however sincere the sentiment behind it."
Dressler's mouth thinned, unconvinced but unable to immediately counter the logic. "Lord Hollis also wonders whether the Marshal might consider a more concrete demonstration of intent. A formal betrothal announcement, perhaps, ahead of the wedding itself, to reassure the family of serious purpose."
The tent went very still, and Eric felt the specific cold drop of a trap closing faster than either he or Seraphine had anticipated.
*That would make this real in the eyes of the entire Chancellery,* Eric said, urgent now. *A betrothal announcement isn't easily walked back the way an unhurried courtship is. Stall this, Vane. Whatever it costs.*
"A formal announcement feels premature," Vane said, careful, "given how recently this arrangement began. I'd rather not rush something Lady Hollis and I both intend to take seriously, Master Dressler. Surely Lord Hollis would prefer a match built on genuine sentiment rather than one hurried along for the sake of appearances."
"His lordship values genuine sentiment considerably less than he values seeing this matter concluded before the autumn court season," Dressler said, dry, "when several other prospects for his daughter's hand will inevitably present themselves, should this one continue to drag."
Dressler stayed two full days, cataloguing the garrison's modest quarters with visible distaste, asking Marek pointed questions about the Marshal's daily habits that Marek deflected with practiced, bland courtesy, and cornering Talwyn at one point with inquiries about the "unusual bond" that Talwyn handled with the same careful vagueness he'd perfected during Vire's visit months before.
"He's remarkably thorough," Talwyn reported afterward, mopping his brow with visible relief once the steward's carriage had finally rolled back out through the garrison gates for good. "More thorough than I expected from a household steward. I'd wager Lord Hollis sent his sharpest man specifically because he suspects something's being managed rather than courted."
"He's not wrong to suspect it," Vane said grimly, watching the dust of the departing carriage settle. "The real question is whether he has anything concrete enough to act on yet, or just an old merchant's instinct for a deal that doesn't quite smell right to him."
*Instinct without hard evidence is still genuinely dangerous, in the right hands,* Eric said. *We need to move faster than his suspicion does from here on, or Dressler's next visit won't be a courtesy call at all. It'll be an ultimatum we can't easily talk our way around.*
---
Vane sent an urgent letter to Seraphine that same night, and her reply, arriving four days later by a private courier rather than official channels, carried an edge of genuine alarm that hadn't touched her earlier correspondence.
"My father's grown suspicious," she wrote, in Vane's careful reading aloud to Eric alone. "Not of the specifics, but of the shape of it — three months and no real urgency from either side reads wrong to a man who's spent his life negotiating trade deals and knows exactly how genuine interest is supposed to behave. He's sent Dressler to force a decision point because he suspects, correctly, that we're both stalling, even if he doesn't yet know why. I don't know how much longer I can hold this off without either a real betrothal or a real explanation, and I have neither to offer him."
*She's right to be frightened,* Eric said, grim. *We've been treating this as a long game, and Lord Hollis has just proven he's not willing to play a long game at our pace. That's a miscalculation on our part, and one we need to correct quickly.*
Vane read the rest of the letter aloud, Seraphine's careful hand growing visibly more hurried toward the end, as if she'd written the final lines in a single anxious rush. "She says her merchant captain has offered to simply run with her, tonight if need be, consequences be damned. She's tempted. She's also terrified of what her father would do to the man's business, his family, everyone connected to him, if she vanished without a resolution her father could present as respectable to the rest of the court."
*That's not an acceptable outcome for anyone,* Eric said, something fierce and protective rising in him on behalf of a woman he'd still never actually met. *We promised her a way out that didn't cost her everything. Running in the night isn't that. We need a real solution, and we need it before her own fear backs her into a worse choice than the one we're trying to save her from.*
"Then we need a different strategy," Vane said, pacing now, the particular restless energy of a commander facing a problem that couldn't be solved with a blade. "Something that ends this cleanly, without a betrothal, without exposing Seraphine's actual attachment, without giving the Chancellery a reason to look more closely at why a Marshal with an unusual bond is suddenly available for court gossip and formal announcements."
*What if the problem isn't tactical at all,* Eric said slowly, an idea forming with the particular clarity that had once let him spot a diagnosis everyone else in the room had missed on a difficult case. *What if we stop trying to manage Lord Hollis's suspicion and instead give him something that actually serves his interests better than a marriage would?*
"Meaning what."
*Meaning House Hollis wants legitimacy and standing at court. What if instead of a marriage, we offer him something equally valuable — an official, permanent trade concession for the garrison's coal and grain sourcing, brokered publicly, with House Hollis credited as the frontier command's chosen supplier of record?* Eric let the idea sharpen as he spoke it aloud. *That's prestige Lord Hollis can point to for the rest of his career — the house that solved the Abyssal Frontier's supply crisis, praised by the Chancellery itself for stepping in where the ordinary requisition system failed. It's arguably more valuable to his legacy than marrying his daughter to a frontier Marshal nobody in the capital envies.*
Vane stopped pacing, turning the idea over with visible, growing interest. "That's not nothing at all. That could actually work, if we present it correctly — frame it as us coming to him with a genuine opportunity, not as us backing quietly away from an obligation we never truly intended to honor."
"It also solves our actual supply problem," Marek added, having been summoned to hear the plan once it had taken clearer shape. "Which the requisition cuts have made considerably worse than either of you has let on to the wider garrison. The coal reserves alone won't last past midwinter at current rationing."
Talwyn, invited in for his own opinion on the theory's soundness, nodded along with visible enthusiasm. "It's elegant, Marshal, I'll grant you that. Lord Hollis gets a legacy he can brag about at every dinner party for the rest of his life. The Chancellery gets to claim credit for encouraging 'innovative private solutions to frontier resourcing,' which I imagine some clerk will phrase exactly that way in whatever report follows. And nobody has to explain why a courtship that should have been urgent instead crawled along at the pace of a wounded snail."
"Assuming Lord Hollis actually takes the bait," Marek said, ever the skeptic among them.
"Assuming that, yes." Vane's jaw was set with the particular determination of a man who'd found a plan worth committing to fully. "But it's a considerably better wager than sitting here waiting for Dressler to circle back with an ultimatum we won't be able to out-maneuver a second time."
"Two problems, one single solution," Vane said, something like real hope entering his voice for the first time since Dressler's visit had first thrown everything into doubt. "If Lord Hollis takes the trade concession instead of the marriage, Seraphine's free to make her own choice about her merchant captain, we get supply relief the Chancellery's been denying us for a season, and nobody has to lie about a betrothal that was never going to happen."
*It requires Lord Hollis to value his own legacy more than he values the marriage specifically,* Eric cautioned. *Which is a wager, not a certainty by any means. But it's a considerably better wager than continuing to stall a man who's already grown suspicious of the exact pace we've set for him.*
---
The proposal went out within the week, drafted jointly by Vane, Seraphine, and — carefully, invisibly — Eric's own strategic thinking woven through every line, framed exactly as Eric had suggested: an opportunity for House Hollis to secure lasting prestige and a formal Chancellery commendation by solving the Frontier's supply crisis publicly, rather than through a marriage that would tie House Hollis's reputation to an unproven frontier bond nobody in the capital fully understood.
The response, when it finally came a full ten days later, arrived not through Dressler but through Lord Hollis's own hand, and Vane read it twice through before allowing himself to relax even slightly.
"He's taking it," Vane said, something like disbelief warming into genuine relief as he read further down the page. "Wants the trade agreement formalized before the autumn court season, wants full credit in any public announcement — his exact words are 'appropriate recognition of House Hollis's decisive role in resolving a crisis that had eluded the Chancellery's own efforts' — and is willing to let the courtship 'conclude amicably, as such things sometimes do, without reflecting poorly on either party.'"
"He's more concerned with how it reads at court than with what actually happened between the three of us these past months," Marek observed, reading over Vane's shoulder. "Convenient for us, that his vanity runs considerably deeper than his suspicion ever did."
"Convenient," Vane agreed, "and considerably better than the alternative Seraphine was contemplating a week ago."
*He's saving face,* Eric said, warm with relief of his own. *Which is exactly what we needed him to do. Seraphine gets her freedom, we get our supply relief, and Lord Hollis gets to tell every noble at court that he single-handedly solved a crisis the Chancellery itself couldn't manage.*
"Everyone wins," Vane said, quiet, sitting heavily now that the tension of the past two weeks had finally, genuinely broken. "Except the Chancellery, I suppose, who'll have to explain why House Hollis succeeded where their own requisition policy failed."
*I find I have remarkably little sympathy to spare for that particular embarrassment.* Eric let warmth and exhaustion both color the observation. *You did well, Vane. All of you did. Seraphine most of all, for trusting two strangers enough to hand us a piece of her own future and let us help carry it.*
Marek, catching the tail end of the good news, allowed himself a rare, genuine grin. "I'll draft the supply logistics for the coal delivery schedule tonight, personally. First piece of good news all season that didn't arrive with a new crisis already attached to it."
"Don't tempt fate just yet," Talwyn warned, though he was smiling too, tucking his notes away with visible, uncharacteristic satisfaction. "We've an entire season's worth of Institute conspiracy still unresolved, and Captain Adler's own situation to keep a careful eye on besides. But I'll allow us this one evening, at least, to simply enjoy having solved something cleanly, for once in this whole difficult year."
Once the tent had emptied and the two of them were finally, truly alone, Eric let himself simply exist in the quiet relief of it, watching Vane's shoulders loosen properly for the first time since Dressler's carriage had first come rolling unannounced through the garrison gates.
"We should write to her properly. Not the careful diplomatic letters Dressler was monitoring. Something real, thanking her for the trust."
*Yes,* Eric agreed. *And somewhere in that letter, quietly, we should let her know that if her merchant captain ever needs a frontier garrison's good word with the Chancellery, he has it. People who choose honesty over self-preservation when it costs them something deserve to have that debt repaid, eventually, in whatever currency we can offer.*
Vane's hand found his chest, steady now, the particular ease of a man who had navigated an impossible political trap without sacrificing anything that actually mattered. "Four months ago I'd have tried to solve this with a sword and made everything worse."
*Four months ago you didn't have someone in your corner who'd spent a career learning that most crises have a solution nobody's thought to look for yet, if you're patient enough to keep looking.* Eric let the warmth settle fully now, proud in a way that had nothing to do with clinical satisfaction and everything to do with simply loving this man, thoroughly and without reservation. *We make a good team, Marshal Blackthorne.*
"We do, Dr. Sterling." Vane's voice had gone soft, worn smooth by relief and affection both. "We really do."
He was quiet a moment, tracing an idle pattern over his own collarbone where Eric's presence sat brightest. "I keep thinking about what Dressler said, that first dinner. About genuine sentiment not being enough to satisfy a man like Lord Hollis. He wasn't wrong, in a way. It took more than sentiment to get us here. It took you thinking three steps past where I could see, the way you must have once thought three steps past a diagnosis nobody else in the room had caught yet."
*It took both,* Eric said, gentle correction rather than modesty. *The sentiment is what made me want to solve it in the first place. I wasn't protecting an abstract political problem, Vane. I was protecting a woman I'd never met because I understood, intimately, what it costs to be treated as a useful piece in someone else's arrangement rather than a person whose wants actually mattered. That's not strategy. That's just having lived through something adjacent enough to recognize it in someone else.*
"Still. The strategy was good."
*The strategy was good,* Eric agreed, warm and a little pleased despite himself. *I'll allow myself that much credit, at least.*
Outside, the garrison's supply lines quietly began to mend over the following weeks, House Hollis's trade concession working its way through Chancellery paperwork toward eventual, formal approval, coal and grain arriving on a schedule the requisition cuts hadn't allowed for in nearly a season. Marek's reports grew steadily less grim, Talwyn's ledgers steadily less alarming, and somewhere in the capital, a Lady freed from an unwanted match and a Marshal freed from a political trap both understood, in their own separate ways, exactly how much they owed to a strange, invisible physician who had spent his second life learning to fight battles no blade could ever touch.
A final letter arrived from Seraphine some weeks later, shorter than her others, carrying news that Vane read aloud with unmistakable warmth in his voice: she and her merchant captain had married quietly, without her father's blessing but also, remarkably, without his active opposition, Lord Hollis apparently too occupied basking in his newfound court prestige to mount much resistance to a daughter no longer needed for a marriage alliance he'd already replaced with something better for his legacy. She thanked them both — Vane and, by careful implication, whatever presence had clearly guided the strategy from somewhere just out of Dressler's sight — for a debt she said she intended to spend the rest of her life finding ways to repay.
*Tell her the debt's already settled,* Eric said, quiet and glad. *Watching her get to keep the life she actually wanted was payment enough.*
Vane wrote back exactly that, word for word, and Eric felt something settle warm and complete in him at the simple, unglamorous satisfaction of a problem solved not with a sword or a crystal spear, but with patience, honesty, and the particular stubborn refusal of everyone involved to let a political machine decide who got to keep their own heart.
