Marek found his informant three days later, and it was not who anyone had expected.
He came to Vane's tent at dusk, jaw set in the particular grim line of a man who had rather have been wrong. "Corporal Dessin," he said, without preamble. "Requisitions clerk. Six years in this garrison, quiet, reliable, never a mark against him. I checked his correspondence going back eight months because he was the only man with legitimate reason to handle every supply manifest that left this camp, and buried in a routine letter to his sister in the capital was a phrase that had no business being there — a description of 'the crystal-bonded Marshal's condition' that no requisitions clerk should ever have cause to write."
*He's not writing to his sister,* Eric said, cold understanding arriving before Vane could voice it. *Or if he is, she's not the one reading it.*
"That's my read as well." Marek's hands, usually so steady, were pressed flat against the map table as though he needed the anchor of it. "I haven't confronted him. I wanted your word on how we handle it first."
Vane was quiet a long moment, something hard and tired moving behind his eyes. "Does he know we've made him?"
"No. He requisitioned stores from me not two hours ago, easy as anything. If he suspects, he's a better actor than six years of garrison duty would suggest."
"Then we don't tip our hand yet." Vane's voice had gone low, the particular flatness that Eric had learned meant a decision already made rather than one still being weighed. "Talwyn needs time to trace where his letters actually go. If we arrest him today, Voss simply finds another Dessin tomorrow, and we've told her exactly how much we know in the process. Better she thinks her man is still safely reporting while we use him to walk the thread back to her."
*That's a hard thing to ask of you,* Eric said, quiet, feeling the toll of it settle through their shared chest. *Letting a man keep reporting on you, knowing what he's reporting and to whom.*
*It's necessary,* Vane answered, silent, meant only for Eric. *That doesn't make it easy. But I'd rather spend a few more weeks watched than lose the only thread we have back to her.*
"Talwyn," Vane said aloud, "can you use this? Trace his letters without alerting him?"
"Given time, yes. My correspondent in the capital archives has contacts in the courier service. If Dessin's letters are being collected rather than simply posted, there will be a pattern to when and by whom — and that pattern will eventually lead somewhere with Voss's name attached to it, or close enough to feel her hand on the other end."
"Do it," Vane said. "Quietly. And Marek — nothing changes in how we treat him. He requisitions same as always, gets the same courtesy as always. If he's being used to spy on us, I'd rather he never know he was caught doing it until the moment it actually matters."
Marek nodded, grim satisfaction settling into the set of his shoulders. "Understood, Marshal."
---
It was three more days before Talwyn returned with anything, and when he did, it came not as triumph but as fresh alarm.
"His letters go through a single courier route," Talwyn reported, spreading a hand-drawn map across the table with the particular care of a man handling something more dangerous than parchment. "Consistently, twice a month, collected by the same rider rather than posted through the ordinary garrison mail. That rider's final destination isn't the capital at all. It's a waystation two days east of here — a supply depot that, according to Chancellery records, was decommissioned eleven years ago and should, by every official account, no longer exist."
"Voss has a private outpost," Vane said, flat.
"I'd wager considerably more than an outpost, Marshal. A decommissioned depot large enough to house whatever she's actually doing there wouldn't need to be more than a single building with a strong door and no windows facing the road. If she's been running this project for thirty years without the wider Chancellery's knowledge, she's had ample time to establish exactly this kind of quiet infrastructure — places that exist on no current map, staffed by people who report to her alone."
*She's been building this for longer than either of us has been alive,* Eric said, something cold moving through him at the scale of it. *A private network, informants scattered through garrisons that might one day produce another bonded pair, and a facility nobody's supposed to know exists. This isn't a woman running an experiment anymore. This is a woman running an entire shadow operation, and the Chancellery she answers to has no idea.*
Vane relayed it, and Talwyn's expression tightened further. "That's precisely my fear as well. Which means the Chancellor's own authority may be entirely useless to us here — she isn't operating within Chancellery oversight at all, whatever her official title suggests. We can't simply report her to superiors who may not even know her true activities exist."
"Then we go around official channels," Marek said, practical as ever. "We find that depot ourselves, and we see exactly what she's been doing there for eleven years that required decommissioning a perfectly functional supply station."
"That's considerably more dangerous than sending a letter to the Chancellor," Talwyn warned. "If she has resources enough to maintain a hidden facility for over a decade, she may have defenses we can't anticipate. I'd advise scouting before anything resembling an approach."
"Agreed," Vane said. "Nobody goes near that depot until we know what we're walking into. Talwyn, keep pulling the thread. Marek, quiet reconnaissance only — I want eyes on that building, not boots through its front door. And nobody breathes a word of this outside this tent until we're certain Dessin isn't reporting our own investigation back to her in the meantime."
The council dispersed with the particular heaviness of people who had learned, over the past weeks, that every answer seemed only to reveal a larger question underneath it.
---
That night, Freya found Vane alone at the edge of the drill yard, Kael's shimmer quiet and steady at her collarbone in a way that had become, these past weeks, almost companionable rather than alarming.
"I heard about the depot," she said, without preamble, settling onto the low wall beside him. "Kael's been listening to every scrap of it he can gather. He wants to help, if there's a way for him to be useful that doesn't involve simply waiting to find out whether he's next on Voss's list."
"There might be," Vane admitted. "If Voss really has been cataloguing anomalies as broadly as Talwyn suspects, she'll have files. Records of exactly the kind Kael might recognize faster than any of us, given he's lived through the very thing she's studying."
*Tell her that's exactly the kind of thinking that could actually help,* Eric said. *Kael isn't just a subject in Voss's files. He's the only one of us who might recognize her methods from the inside, if we ever get close enough to see them.*
Vane relayed it, and Freya's mouth curved, something steadier than her earlier alarm settling into the expression. "He says he'd like that. Being useful instead of merely hidden."
"We'll need it," Vane said, quiet. "Whatever this depot turns out to be."
Freya was silent a moment, watching the last light fail over the yard. "Can I ask you something, Marshal? Not as a captain to her commander. As one bonded person to another."
"Go ahead."
"Does it get easier? Feeling someone else's fear as clearly as your own, on top of whatever fear you were already carrying alone?"
Vane considered the question with more care than he might have given it a season ago, before Eric had taught him, slowly and without ever quite meaning to, that some questions deserved real answers rather than convenient ones. "No," he said finally. "It doesn't get easier, exactly. But it stops feeling like a burden somewhere along the way, and starts feeling like the only kind of company that's ever actually understood what you're afraid of without you having to explain it first."
*Well said,* Eric murmured, warm despite everything the day had revealed.
Freya nodded slowly, something in her shoulders easing by a fraction. "That's what I needed to hear, I think. Thank you, Marshal."
She left him there with the last of the light, and Vane sat alone a while longer, Eric's quiet warmth settled steady beneath his ribs, before rising to find his own bed and whatever rest the night could still offer against tomorrow's larger fight.
---
He didn't sleep, not immediately. Instead he found himself standing at the narrow basin in the corner of his tent, sleeves pushed back, washing the day's grime from his hands and forearms with the slow, unhurried care of a man who wasn't really thinking about washing at all.
*You're stalling,* Eric observed, fond rather than accusing.
*I'm thinking.* Vane's reflection in the small polished-steel mirror looked older than it had a season ago, new lines carved by worry rather than years. "About Freya's question."
*Which part of it?*
"Whether it gets easier." Vane set the cloth aside, braced both hands against the basin's rim, and let his head hang for a moment, the day's weight finally settling into his shoulders now that no one else was watching. "I told her it doesn't. I meant it. But I didn't tell her the rest of it."
*Which is?*
"That I wouldn't trade it back even if I could." He straightened, caught his own eyes in the mirror, and beneath the fear of everything Talwyn had uncovered, something steadier moved through his expression. "A month ago I'd have called that madness. Wanting to keep a voice in my head permanently, wanting to keep feeling someone else's heartbeat layered under my own. Now I can't imagine choosing the silence, even knowing what Voss might still do to keep hunting us."
Eric was quiet a moment, something in the bond going warm and unguarded in the particular way it only did when neither of them was performing steadiness for anyone else's benefit. *I used to lie awake in my old life,* he said finally, *wondering if I'd ever matter to anyone the way I wanted to matter — not as a physician people needed, but as a person someone actually chose, deliberately, out of every option available to them. I never got an answer to that, before the crystal. I have one now, and it terrifies me a little, how much I don't want to lose it.*
Vane's hand rose, unconsciously, to rest over his own sternum — an old habit, but softer now, more claiming than searching. "You're not going to lose it. Whatever Voss is planning, whatever that depot turns out to be, I'm not letting thirty years of some woman's ambition decide how this ends for us."
*I know.* Eric let warmth carry the words, steady as a held hand. *I just needed to say it aloud, once, where you could hear it plainly. That this isn't only survival to me anymore. It stopped being only survival a long time ago.*
"For me too," Vane admitted, quiet, and the tent held nothing but the low lamplight and the particular, charged stillness of two people who had stopped pretending, even to themselves, that what lived between them was merely practical. His breath caught, unbidden, at the warmth spreading low and slow beneath his ribs — not fear this time, not the bond's familiar ache, but something closer to want, unguarded and entirely his own, sharpened rather than dulled by Eric's answering warmth threaded through it.
*Careful,* Eric murmured, low, amusement and something hungrier both audible in the single word. *You keep looking at yourself in that mirror like that, and I'm going to have opinions about what you do next.*
"Is that a threat or an invitation?"
*Depends entirely on what you decide to do about it.*
Vane huffed something that was almost a laugh, low and rough, and blew out the lamp rather than answer aloud, letting the dark and the quiet, insistent warmth of the bond say the rest of it for him. Whatever tomorrow demanded of them — Dessin's letters, the hidden depot, thirty years of a stranger's patient cruelty — tonight, at least, belonged to no one but the two of them.
---
Marek's reconnaissance took the better part of a week to arrange properly, and when his scout finally returned, the report he brought back did nothing to ease the garrison's collective unease.
"Two guards visible from the tree line, rotating on a schedule tight enough to suggest training rather than mere caution," the young corporal reported, kneeling before the map table with the particular precision of a soldier who understood exactly how much rode on getting every detail right. "No obvious markings on the building itself, but fresh cart tracks leading in and out — recent traffic, Marshal, within the last several days. Whatever's happening there, it's active, not abandoned."
"Supplies going in, or coming out?" Marek asked.
"Both, from the depth of the ruts. Heavy loads in, lighter ones out. Could be nothing. Could be exactly the kind of pattern you'd expect from a facility processing something rather than merely storing it."
*Processing,* Eric repeated, something grim moving through the word. *That's not a word I like applied to whatever Voss might be doing with bonded subjects.*
Vane's jaw tightened, the earlier night's warmth folding back beneath the day's colder necessities. "Keep watching. I want to know everything about that building before we so much as consider approaching it — how many people work there, when shifts change, whether Voss herself ever visits in person. We move on certainty, not assumption. Too much is riding on getting this right the first time."
"Understood, Marshal," the corporal said, and withdrew to relay the order, leaving Vane and Marek alone with the map and the grim new weight of a threat that had, in the space of a single scouting report, gone from theoretical to unmistakably, currently real.
Marek lingered a moment after the corporal's departure, studying the crude sketch of the depot with the particular focus of a man who trusted maps more than he trusted people. "You know we can't sit on this indefinitely, Marshal. If she's processing something in there, every week we spend watching quietly is a week someone else might be paying for it."
"I know." Vane's hand pressed flat against the table, weight settling through his arm rather than his voice. "But we go in blind, we lose whatever advantage patience is currently buying us. I'd rather move a week late and certain than a week early and dead."
"Fair," Marek allowed. "Just don't let caution become an excuse. Some debts don't wait politely for a convenient hour."
"They rarely do," Vane agreed, and there was nothing more to say to that, only the map, and the quiet, and the long list of things that still needed answering before anyone could safely act on what they'd found.
*He's not wrong,* Eric said, once Marek had gone and the tent had emptied of everyone but the two of them and the lamplight. *Every day we wait is a day someone in that depot might not have the luxury of waiting alongside us.*
*I know that too.* Vane's voice, aloud now, had gone rough with the particular exhaustion of a man carrying more weight than any single person should reasonably bear. "But I've buried enough soldiers who charged in certain rather than careful. I won't add either of us to that number for the sake of moving faster than the facts allow."
*I'm not asking you to charge in,* Eric said, gentle now, the earlier grimness folding back into something softer. *I'm only saying I understand the cost of waiting, same as you understand the cost of moving too soon. We hold both of those truths at once, and we choose the least costly path we can find between them. That's all leadership has ever really been, as far as I've observed.*
Vane's mouth curved, faint and tired, at that. "When did you get so wise about leadership? Last I checked, you spent your old life setting bones and stitching wounds, not commanding garrisons."
*I spent my old life watching what happens to people when someone in charge makes the wrong call, and having to live with the consequences stitched into their skin afterward.* Eric let old, weary memory color the words, not bitter, only honest. *That taught me more about leadership than any general ever could. Every commander I ever patched back together wished, afterward, that they'd waited one more day for better information. None of them ever wished they'd charged in faster.*
"That's a grim way to earn wisdom."
*Most useful wisdom is grim, in my experience. The comfortable kind rarely teaches anyone anything they didn't already want to believe.*
Vane huffed something almost like a laugh, low and tired, and let himself sink into the chair Marek had vacated, the day's accumulated weight finally settling fully now that no report or council demanded his immediate attention. Outside, the garrison had gone quiet for the night, the drill yard empty, the watch fires burning low and steady against the dark.
Somewhere two days east, behind walls that officially did not exist, a woman with thirty years of patient ambition continued whatever work she had built her private, hidden purpose around, entirely unaware that the garrison she had spent months quietly surveilling had finally, deliberately, begun surveilling her back. And somewhere closer, in a modest tent lit by low lamplight, two people bound by an accident neither had chosen sat together in the particular quiet that came after a hard day honestly faced, neither of them alone with it, both of them certain, in the one thing that mattered most tonight, that whatever tomorrow demanded, they would meet it exactly as they had met everything else since the crystal first bound them together — side by side, and unwilling, now, to imagine it any other way.
