The loose panel Osric had found on the second scouting run gave way with barely a whisper, and the six of them slipped through the depot's east wall into a narrow service corridor lit only by a single guttering lamp at its far end.
*Quiet,* Eric said, unnecessary but instinctive, as Vane's pulse hammered loud enough that Eric could feel it as clearly as his own heartbeat. *Everyone's exactly where they need to be. Just breathe.*
Marek led with two fingers raised, guiding them past a junction where the corridor split — one branch toward what looked, from the faint light spilling under a door, like an office; the other descending, via a narrow stair, into something colder and darker that smelled, unmistakably, of stone and damp and long confinement.
Freya went rigid the moment they reached the top of that stair, one hand flying to her own collarbone. "Down there," she breathed, barely audible. "Kael says down there. Strong. Closer than anything he's felt since the collapse."
Marek exchanged a single, silent glance with Vane, and split the team without needing to speak the decision aloud — gesturing Osric and Petra toward the office branch to secure whatever records might be found, while he, Vane, and Freya took the stair down into the dark.
Osric and Petra found the office unlocked, its occupant evidently confident enough in the depot's isolation to have grown careless about security this deep into a routine night. A single desk lamp burned low over a stack of ledgers and correspondence, and Osric worked fast, sweeping the most recent-looking pages into his satchel while Petra kept watch at the door, blade drawn and ready.
Petra kept her voice low, eyes fixed on the corridor beyond. "Marshal's group. Any trouble?"
"None yet," Osric said, scanning one final page before folding it into the satchel with the rest. "This one's addressed to Voss directly. Might be worth more than the whole rest of the stack." He glanced up, listening to some distant sound neither of them could quite place yet. "Grab what looks recent and let's move. I don't like how quiet this place is."
Petra swept the remaining loose pages off the desk without pausing to read them, trusting Talwyn's eye to sort what mattered from what didn't once they were safely clear. "Quiet's better than the alternative," she murmured. "Let's not test how long it holds."
They slipped back into the corridor moments before the first distant shout would reach them, satchel heavy with whatever truths Voss had been careless enough to leave lying in reach.
The stairwell opened onto a low corridor lined with heavy doors, each fitted with a small barred window, and the smell of stone and confinement thickened into something Eric recognized, with cold professional clarity, as the particular staleness of air that had not moved freely in a very long time.
*This isn't a research facility,* Eric said, fury and horror both arriving at once. *This is a prison built to look like an outpost from the outside.*
Vane's jaw tightened, and he moved to the first door, peering through the barred window into darkness that resolved, slowly, into a huddled shape against the far wall — a young woman, thin and pale in the dim light, flinching back from the sudden movement at her door.
"We're not here to hurt you," Vane said, low and urgent. "We're here to get you out."
The woman's eyes, wide and disbelieving, fixed on him through the bars. "You're — you're real? Not another test?"
*Careful,* Eric murmured, quiet warning threading through the words. *If they've been tested before — deceived before, made to hope and then punished for it — she may not trust rescue on sight. Go slow.*
Vane absorbed that, and gentled his voice further. "My name is Vane. I command the garrison two days west of here. We know what Voss has been doing, and we're getting you and whoever else is down here out tonight. What's your name?"
"Corin," the woman said, voice cracking. "Please — there are others. Three more, at least. And—" Her breath caught. "There's a woman two doors down who's been asking after someone named Dessin for as long as I've been here. She says if he's alive, he'll come."
Freya's breath left her in a sharp exhale. "Mira."
Marek was already at the lock, working it with the particular efficiency of a man who'd clearly rehearsed exactly this contingency, and the door swung open within seconds. Corin stumbled forward into the corridor, and Vane caught her before she could fall, steadying her with careful, deliberate gentleness.
*She's malnourished. Dehydrated. Nothing acute, but this has been going on for weeks at minimum,* Eric assessed, quick and clinical despite the fury underneath. *Tell Marek we need to move quickly but carefully. She won't manage a hard pace.*
Vane relayed it in clipped, urgent phrases, and Marek was already moving to the second door, then the third, freeing two more captives — an older man who gave his name only as Bren, silent and shaking, and a younger man barely past boyhood who wept openly at the sight of the open door, disbelief and relief tangled past any composure.
The fourth door held Mira.
She was thinner than Dessin's description had prepared any of them for, dark hair matted, but her eyes, when they found Freya's face and then Vane's, held something fierce and unbroken that no amount of confinement had managed to extinguish. "Dessin," she said, before anyone could speak. "Is he—"
"Alive," Vane said, immediate and certain. "Waiting for you. He's been reporting to Voss under duress for three years to keep you safe. Tonight, that ends."
Mira's composure broke, finally, into something raw and overwhelmed, and Freya moved to steady her the way Vane had steadied Corin, murmuring something too quiet for Eric to catch clearly through the bond, though the warmth of it carried regardless.
*Four,* Eric said, quiet satisfaction cutting briefly through the horror. *We came for three or four. We found exactly that many, and every one of them still alive to be found.*
Bren, the older man, had gone quiet and watchful in the corner of the corridor, eyes darting between the freed captives and their rescuers with the particular wariness of someone who had learned, over a long confinement, not to trust rescue at face value. "How do we know you're not simply moving us to a different cage," he said, low, addressing Vane directly. "Voss promised things too, once. Before she stopped promising anything at all."
*He's not wrong to ask,* Eric said, gentle despite the urgency of the moment. *Answer him honestly. Not with reassurance he has no reason yet to believe.*
"You don't know," Vane said, plain. "Not yet. All I can offer is that I'm taking you somewhere with people who'll feed you, treat your wounds, and let you decide for yourselves what comes next — no ledgers, no experiments, no reports filed on your condition. You'll have to trust that with time, not with words alone. I understand if that's not enough tonight."
Bren studied him a long moment, something in his guarded expression easing by a fraction. "It's more honesty than I've heard in longer than I can count," he said finally. "I'll take it, for now."
"Move," Marek said, urgent now, glancing back down the corridor toward the stair. "We're past the window Dessin gave us. Osric and Petra should be waiting at the junction."
They half-carried, half-guided the four freed captives back up the narrow stair, and found Osric waiting exactly where he'd promised, a slim sheaf of papers clutched in one hand and an expression of grim triumph despite the tension written across every line of him.
"Records," he said, low. "Talwyn's going to want every page of this. But Marshal — we need to move now. Someone's coming."
The words had barely left him when a shout echoed from somewhere deeper in the building — an alarm, sharp and unmistakable, followed by the heavy sound of boots against stone.
"They've found the empty cells," Marek said, grim. "Go. Now. East wall, same as we came in."
They moved fast, the freed captives stumbling between them, Freya and Kael's shimmer bright now, no longer dimmed for stealth but blazing with the particular fierce light of a bond willing to be seen if it meant protecting the people beside her. A guard rounded the corridor ahead of them, weapon half-raised, and froze for the barest instant at the sight of Kael's glow before Marek's blade found him first, efficient and final.
"Keep moving," Marek barked, and they didn't stop, didn't look back, pouring through the loose panel in the east wall and out into the cold night air, the depot's alarm still ringing distant and furious behind them.
They didn't slow until the tree line swallowed them whole, and Talwyn emerged from the dark to meet them, relief breaking openly across his face at the sight of six departing become ten returning.
"You did it," he breathed, disbelieving, eyes moving over the four unfamiliar, exhausted faces among the returning group as though he could scarcely trust the evidence in front of him. "Four of them. You actually found four of them alive."
"Barely," Marek said, breathless, already scanning the tree line behind them for any sign of pursuit. "We need to move fast and far. They'll have riders out within the hour, once they realize how many cells stand empty." He glanced toward the satchel Osric still carried, pages just visible at its edge. "Tell me that's worth what we risked to grab it."
"It's Voss's own hand, addressed and signed," Osric said, grim satisfaction plain despite his exhaustion. "Talwyn's going to have a very long night ahead of him."
*Vane.* Eric's voice cut through the adrenaline, urgent but steady. *You're bleeding. Left side, above the hip. You took that guard's blade somewhere in the corridor and didn't tell me.*
"Didn't have time to tell you," Vane said aloud, breathless, pressing a hand to the wound as the first real wave of pain caught up with the adrenaline's fading edge. "It's shallow. I'll live."
*Let me be the judge of shallow,* Eric said, already assessing through the bond with the same quick clinical focus he'd turned on Corin minutes before. *It's not life-threatening, but it needs binding before we've gone another mile, or you'll bleed more than either of us would like on the walk back.*
Marek called a brief halt, just long enough for hasty field dressing, while Freya knelt with Mira and the other freed captives, murmuring reassurance, Kael's shimmer settling, gradually, from blazing alarm back into something steadier.
"We got them," Freya said, quiet, disbelieving relief plain in her voice as she looked at the four freed strangers now huddled together under the trees. "All four of them. Alive." Kael's shimmer, still bright at her collarbone, pulsed once, soft and steady, in what Eric had come to recognize as the closest thing to a sigh a bonded spirit could manage.
*All four,* Eric agreed, warmth threading fierce through the lingering fear. *Whatever else tonight cost us, we didn't leave anyone behind. Not one.*
Vane, wound bound tight enough to hold until they reached the garrison's own physicians, allowed himself, for the first time since they'd crossed into that stairwell, a single unguarded breath of relief. "Then we move," he said. "Fast, and together, before Voss's riders find the trail." He looked once more at the four exhausted, disbelieving faces gathered under the trees, and something in his chest settled, grim and certain, around the knowledge that whatever came of tonight's discovery, it had been worth every risk taken to earn it.
They set off through the dark toward home, ten where six had gone, the depot's distant alarm finally fading behind them into silence — though none of them doubted, walking swift and grim through the cold night, that the silence was only temporary, and that whatever came next would come considerably faster than they'd like.
---
They reached the garrison a little past dawn, exhausted and travel-worn, and the small procession of freed captives drew a hushed, disbelieving crowd within minutes of passing through the gate. Talwyn had sent a rider ahead once the tree line had cleared, and the garrison's own physicians — trained in Eric's methods now, months into the careful education he'd given them alongside his work with Vane — were already waiting with blankets and warm broth and the particular efficient gentleness of people who understood exactly how fragile a body could become after prolonged deprivation.
Dessin found Mira before anyone thought to send for him, having heard the commotion and abandoned his post without a second thought for propriety, and the sight of the two of them — Mira half-collapsed with exhaustion and disbelief, Dessin catching her as though he'd spent three years rehearsing exactly this moment without ever quite believing it would come — drew a hush across the assembled crowd that felt, for a long moment, almost sacred.
"You're real," Mira said, echoing Corin's own disbelief from the depot's dark corridor, her hands fisted in the fabric of Dessin's coat as though she still feared he might dissolve like some cruel trick of exhaustion. "They told me you'd stopped asking. That you'd been reassigned, forgotten me—"
"Never," Dessin said, voice breaking entirely. "Not for one single day in three years. I'm sorry it took this long. I'm so sorry."
"You kept me alive," Mira said, fierce despite her exhaustion. "Every letter you wrote her, every year you spent afraid — that's what kept me alive. Don't you dare apologize for surviving it."
Vane watched the reunion from a short distance, Eric's quiet warmth settling through the bond as clearly as his own exhaustion. *Worth it,* Eric said, simple and certain. *Whatever the depot's alarm still means for us in the coming days, that alone was worth every risk we took to get here.*
*Agreed,* Vane answered, silent, watching Dessin press his forehead to Mira's with the particular desperate tenderness of a man who'd spent three years afraid he'd never get the chance.
---
The garrison's healers took Vane aside not long after, insisting on properly cleaning and stitching the wound Eric had bound only roughly in the field, and Eric settled into the familiar rhythm of overseeing his own care secondhand, directing the younger physician's hands with quiet, precise instruction until the wound was closed properly and the bleeding fully stopped.
"You should rest," the young physician said, once the stitching was done, echoing advice Eric had given a hundred times over in his old life and found considerably more difficult to receive than to dispense.
*She's right,* Eric said, dry despite the exhaustion coloring every word. *I never appreciated, in my old life, quite how insufferable my own patients must have found me every time I told them the exact same thing.*
"Physician, heal thyself," Vane murmured, letting himself finally sink back against the cot in his own tent once the healer had gone, the accumulated adrenaline of the night finally, fully draining out of him and leaving nothing behind but bone-deep exhaustion.
*Something like that.* Eric let warmth carry the words, gentler now that the danger had passed and only the aftermath remained. *You did well tonight. All of it. The plan, the execution, the mercy toward people who'd forgotten what mercy even looked like. I'm proud of you, and I don't say that lightly.*
"We did well," Vane corrected, quiet. "All of us. Marek's planning, Talwyn's research, Dessin's schedule, Freya and Kael's courage. I just happened to be the one who walked through the door first."
*Modest,* Eric said, fond. *But I'll allow it, this once, given how thoroughly you've earned the right to be tired rather than argue the point.*
Vane's eyes drifted closed, the exhaustion finally, mercifully claiming him, though Eric held him back from sleep a moment longer, unwilling to let the night close without saying one more thing plainly.
*Vane.*
"Mm." Vane's eyes cracked open again, heavy but attentive.
*I meant what I said in the tree line. Before we moved. That whatever we found in there, this was worth it.* Eric let the words settle, unhurried. *I've spent my whole life — both of them, now — believing that saving people mattered more than almost anything else. Tonight, I got to do that again, properly, the way I used to before the crystal changed everything. I haven't felt that specific kind of purpose in longer than I realized until it came back all at once tonight.*
Vane's hand found his own chest, slow, the old gesture gone soft with exhaustion rather than urgency. "That's not a small thing to get back."
*No,* Eric agreed. *It isn't. And I have you to thank for making it possible — for trusting me enough, all those months ago, to let me be more than just a voice keeping you alive. You gave me back the thing I thought I'd lost the day I died on that operating table.*
"You gave me considerably more than that in return," Vane murmured, drowsy but sincere. "Don't sell yourself short on the accounting, physician. It goes both ways."
*Fair,* Eric conceded, warmth threading fond through the exhaustion. *Sleep now. Whatever Voss does next, it can wait until you've actually rested.*
Vane huffed something that might have been agreement, and within minutes his breathing had evened into genuine sleep, the wound stitched and bound, the night's danger finally, fully past. Eric stayed with him regardless, keeping the quiet, careful watch he'd kept every night since the battlefield first bound them together, and let himself, at last, feel the full weight of the relief he'd been holding back through every tense hour of the mission — four strangers rescued, a stack of stolen records waiting for Talwyn's careful attention, and, somewhere behind them, a woman named Voss who would, by morning's full light, know exactly how much her thirty-year silence had just been broken.
You've reached the end of this chapter
