Vane woke before dawn, which was not unusual, except that this time he woke already talking.
"I want to say something," he said, into the grey half-light of the tent, before Eric had so much as registered the shift from sleep to waking in the man's body around him, "and I need you not to interrupt until I'm finished, because if you interrupt I will lose my nerve, and I have had exactly one nerve this entire fortnight and I am spending it now."
*I wasn't aware you had nerves left to spend, given the week we've had.* But Eric said it lightly, testing the ground, some instinct in him going very still and very attentive, the way a physician goes quiet at the first sign that a patient is finally about to say the thing they've been circling for days.
"That's the joke version. I'm asking you to let me do the honest version." Vane sat up, swinging his legs over the edge of the cot, elbows braced on his knees, staring at his own hands in the dim light like they belonged to a stranger he was still getting used to. "Talwyn thinks someone's hunting whatever you are. The Chancellery's sending a man who's going to look at you like a specimen the moment he works out what he's looking at. I've spent this whole week making plans for how to protect you from all of that, and every single plan I've made has you as the thing being protected and me as the wall standing in front of it, because that's the only shape I know how to put myself in when something matters to me."
*Vane—*
"You said not to interrupt."
Eric, chastened, subsided into something that felt remarkably like holding his breath, despite having no breath of his own to hold.
"I've been doing the same thing my whole life," Vane went on, quieter now, some of the flatness of command finally, fully stripped away. "Making myself into whatever shape the moment needed, so nobody else had to bear the cost of it. My mother taught me that without meaning to. The Chancellery rewarded me for it without ever once asking if it was sustainable. And I got very good at it, good enough that by the time you showed up in my chest three weeks ago, I don't think I actually knew how to be anything except useful and expendable, in that order." He turned his head, finally, to look toward the center of his own chest, the place where Eric's presence sat brightest, as if some part of him needed to address this to a location rather than simply into the air. "But you keep doing this thing where you refuse to let me be just useful to you. You keep insisting on rules that protect me specifically, not the mission, not the garrison, not the greater good — me. And I don't think anyone's done that in a very long time. Maybe not since my mother, and even she did it by working herself into the ground on my behalf, which isn't quite the same thing."
*It isn't the same thing at all,* Eric said, softly, unable to stay entirely silent through that.
"No," Vane agreed. "It's not." He exhaled, long and unsteady, and when he spoke again his voice had dropped into the register Eric had come, over these three weeks, to recognize as the one that belonged to no one but the two of them. "I don't have the right words for what I'm asking, because nobody ever taught me the words for wanting something for myself instead of for the mission. But I know I don't want this to just be survival anymore. I don't want it to be a bond we're managing so neither of us dies. I want—" He stopped, and Eric felt, with a clarity that had nothing to do with any medical instrument he'd ever trained on, the specific tremor of a man reaching for something he'd never once in his adult life allowed himself to reach for. "I want to choose this. On purpose. Not because the Aegis-Cor fused us together in the middle of a battlefield and neither of us got a vote. I want to actually ask you. Properly. Whatever that even looks like, for two people in our particular situation."
*Ask me what, Vane.*
"Whether you'd stay." His hands had gone very still on his knees. "Not because you have to, not because your consciousness would unravel if you left, not because the math says it's the safer option. If there were a door out of this right now — if some healer walked in and told you there was a way to sever the bond cleanly, no cost to either of us, a clean split — would you still choose to stay. With me. Like this."
The question hung there in the grey dawn light, and Eric found himself, for the first time in three weeks of composed clinical certainty, entirely without a ready answer — not because he didn't know it, but because the true answer was so large it required him to set down every careful, professional distance he'd built as scaffolding around his own heart, or whatever now passed for one.
*Yes,* he said, finally, and the word came out steadier than he expected, steadier than he felt. *I would stay. Not out of obligation, not out of survival math, not because I don't know how to want anything else. I would stay because somewhere in the last three weeks, watching you talk frightened recruits back into themselves, watching you carry a wound you never once let yourself acknowledge until I forced the issue, watching you choose, again and again, to be gentle with a voice in your own chest instead of resenting it — I stopped thinking of this as the strange accident that killed me twice. I started thinking of it as the place I ended up when the universe finally put me somewhere I was actually needed as myself, not as a function, not as a set of hands that could hold a scalpel steady for nineteen hours. As Eric. Just Eric. And you're the first person in either of my lives to want that version of me at all.*
Vane made a sound that wasn't quite a laugh and wasn't quite a sob, low and cracked open, both hands coming up now to press flat against his own chest as if he could physically gather the words in.
"Say that again," he said, rough. "Slower. I need to actually hear it, not just feel the shape of it through whatever this bond does to the words."
*I would stay,* Eric said again, slower, deliberate, letting every word land with its full weight. *I choose you. Not the mission. Not the survival. You, Vane Blackthorne, specifically — gruff and self-sacrificing and entirely too willing to burn yourself down for people who don't always deserve it, including me. I choose this. I choose staying.*
"Then that's the deal," Vane said, and his voice, when it came, had steadied into something Eric had never heard from him before — not the flat command register, not the wry banter, not even last night's raw unguarded honesty, but something new entirely, quiet and solemn and absolutely certain, the voice of a man making a vow he intended to actually keep. "Not the boundaries we set for the bond. Not the treatment plan. A real one. Whatever happens with the Institute, whatever this envoy wants, whatever it costs either of us — I'm not doing this as your patient anymore, or your vessel, or whatever clinical word fits best. I'm doing this as a man who is choosing you, on purpose, with his eyes open, same as you just chose me. That's the actual khế ước. The one that was never written down in any report, and never will be."
*I don't have a clinical term for that,* Eric admitted, something unfamiliar and entirely unmedical rising in him, warm and unsteady and utterly undeniable. *I'm not sure I need one.*
"Good," Vane said. "Because I'm done using them to avoid saying the actual thing." He drew a slow breath, and his hand, still pressed to his chest, spread wider, fingers splayed like he was trying to hold the whole of Eric's presence at once instead of just the nearest edge of it. "I love you. However that works, whatever shape it takes for a man and the crystal ghost of a dead surgeon living in his sternum — I love you, and I'm no longer interested in pretending this is only about keeping my heart beating."
The words landed somewhere in Eric that had no proper anatomy left to receive them, and yet he felt the impact of them completely — a warmth spreading through the lattice of himself that had nothing to do with resonance strain or crystal integration, the specific, unrepeatable sensation of being wanted for exactly what he was and nothing else.
*I love you too,* Eric said, and the words came easier than he expected, as though some part of him had been holding them ready for days, waiting only for the right moment to finally set them down. *I have for longer than I let myself admit, if I'm being honest about my own data. You didn't need to earn it, Vane. You just had to keep being yourself long enough for me to notice.*
Vane laughed then, a real laugh, unguarded and slightly wet at the edges, the sound of a man who had spent eight years being armor first and person second finally allowing both halves of himself into the same room at once. "I've been called a lot of things in my life. Nobody's ever called me easy to love."
*You're not easy. You're worth it. There's a difference, and I'd know — I spent a career treating people who were neither.*
"Romantic," Vane said, but he was smiling now, the exhausted, radiant smile of a man who has just set down a weight he didn't know he'd been carrying for years. He let himself fall back against the cot, one hand still resting over his chest, the other coming up to scrub roughly at his own eyes. "I don't know what we tell the men. I don't know what we tell the envoy. I don't even know what the words are for whatever category of thing we've just become to each other."
*We don't have to know all of that this morning,* Eric said, gentle, settling into the easy quiet that followed, unlike any quiet they'd shared before — lighter, somehow, though nothing about their situation had actually gotten simpler. *We have a fortnight before the envoy arrives, an Institute conspiracy we barely understand, and a rift that went silent for reasons neither of us has solved. That's plenty to be getting on with. This part — this part we already got right.*
"This part," Vane agreed, quiet, content in a way Eric had never once felt from him before, not even in the stolen peace of the campfire nights that had come before this one. "Yeah. This part we got right."
He sat up again, slower this time, and undid the top of his sleep shirt with unhurried fingers, baring the skin over his sternum where the crystal lattice ran brightest — not for treatment this time, not for Eric to examine some new anomaly, but simply because some instinct in him wanted, for once, to be looked at without the excuse of medicine standing between them.
"Come up," Vane said, low, a request rather than a command, the first time he had ever asked rather than simply endured whatever manifestation the moment required. "Properly. However much of yourself you can hold, right now, just for a minute. I want to feel you the way you feel me. Not through the bond secondhand. However close to real as this gets."
Eric hesitated — old caution, old rules about resonance strain and safe thresholds rising instinctively — before recognizing the hesitation for what it was, and setting it down.
*That's going to feel strange,* he warned, even as he gathered himself, drawing up through the lattice beneath Vane's skin with far more deliberate care than he'd ever spent on a battlefield manifestation, crystal warming to the surface not as blade or shield but simply as presence, translucent and glowing faintly red-gold in the grey morning light, taking on, for the first time outside of dire necessity, something almost like the ghost of a shape — not a full body, not yet, Eric hadn't come close to breaking that particular seal, but enough of himself made visible, made *touchable*, that when Vane's hand came up to rest against the warm, faintly pulsing crystal at his own collarbone, it was skin meeting something that was, undeniably, also skin, in its own impossible way.
"There you are," Vane murmured, and the wonder in his voice was unlike anything Eric had heard from him before, reverent in a way that had nothing to do with rank or command. His thumb traced, slow and careful, along one of the fine crystalline seams, and Eric felt the touch the way he imagined a person might feel their own pulse when they pressed careful fingers to their throat — intimate, almost unbearably so, the boundary between the two of them thinner in that moment than it had ever been.
*You're allowed to be careful with something and still want it,* Eric said, quiet, the words coming out rougher than he intended, some current running beneath them that had nothing to do with clinical composure at all.
"I'm learning that," Vane said, and bent his head, slow, giving Eric every chance to pull back if this crossed some line neither of them had thought to draw, and pressed his mouth to the warm crystal glow at his own collarbone — an impossible kiss, given to no fixed shape, and yet Eric felt it complete and whole, warmth blooming through the lattice of him in a way that had nothing to do with resonance strain and everything to do with being wanted, entirely, without qualification.
*Vane.* His voice, when it came, had lost every trace of its careful clinical register.
"Too much?" Immediate, attentive, ready to stop.
*No.* Eric let the crystal at his collarbone warm brighter, an involuntary answer more honest than words. *Not too much. Just — new. Good. Don't stop on my account.*
He didn't. What followed was slow and unhurried and entirely unlike anything either of them had experience with — no established shape for how a man was meant to be intimate with the crystalline ghost of a dead surgeon fused into his own chest, no textbook, no precedent, only patience and attention and the particular tenderness of two people finally allowing themselves to want something without immediately calculating its cost. Vane's hands were careful everywhere they touched, reverent in a way that made Eric understand, with sudden clarity, exactly what Vane had meant the night before about not knowing how to hold something carefully — because here, now, he was doing exactly that, learning the shape of gentleness in real time, and Eric let himself be held that way, glowing warm and unguarded beneath a soldier's careful hands, for as long as either of them needed.
When it was over — unhurried, unfinished in the way first discoveries always are, more promise than culmination — Vane lay back against the cot with Eric's glow settling soft beneath his skin once more, dissolved back into ordinary presence, and pressed one more unhurried kiss to his own knuckles where they rested over his heart, as if sealing something shut.
"We're going to have to figure out what this actually is," he said, drowsy and thoroughly undone in a way Eric had genuinely never witnessed from him before. "Practically speaking. Logistically. Whatever word covers a man and his — " a soft, helpless laugh — "whatever the correct term is for you."
*We have time,* Eric said, warm and unbothered, some deep clinical part of him already quietly delighted at the data this morning had given him to consider, though he suspected now was not the moment to mention it aloud. *We're rather good, it turns out, at inventing our own terms as we go.*
Outside, the sky was beginning to lighten properly over the black stone of the Frontier, the ordinary business of a garrison camp stirring awake around them — sentries changing watch, cookfires catching, the distant clatter of Corven mucking out stables he'd insisted on tending before anyone else was up — entirely unaware that somewhere inside the Marshal's tent, a pact older and stranger than any treaty the Chancellery had ever drafted had just, quietly, without witness or ceremony, been sealed.
Marek found Vane an hour later than usual at the mess table, uncharacteristically late, and took one look at his commander's face before setting down two bowls with the particular knowing silence of a man who had served under someone long enough to read weather changes in the set of his jaw.
"You look different," he said, without preamble, sitting across from him with his own breakfast.
"Do I."
"Lighter. Like you put something down." Marek ate for a moment, unhurried, before adding, dry as ever, "Should I be worried, or should I be relieved?"
"Neither," Vane said, and then, after a pause that Eric felt land warm through his chest, "Both, maybe. Ask me again in a fortnight, once the envoy's come and gone and we know what we're actually dealing with."
"Fair enough." Marek raised his cup in a small, private toast, to Vane or to the empty air over his heart, Eric couldn't quite tell which, and didn't need to. "Whatever it is, Marshal — I'm glad you found it. Man deserves at least one good thing, after eight years out here."
*Tell him,* Eric said, quiet and warm, *that he's not wrong.*
Vane didn't relay it. He only smiled, small and unguarded, and let the morning carry on around them, ordinary and unremarkable and entirely, finally, his own.

Vane woke before dawn, which was not unusual, except that this time he woke already talking.
