His face was in the mud.
That was the first thing Soma felt — not pain, not sound, but the cold wet press of paddy-field mud against his left cheek. The smell of clay and rotting straw. Somewhere behind him, the laughter of the Fujiwara children was already fading with their retreating footsteps.
He did not try to sit up immediately.
He lay still. Breathed. Counted.
His left lip was split — he knew because he could taste iron. The cheekbone ached in time with his heartbeat but did not feel broken. His right wrist was scraped from catching himself when he fell. Nothing serious. The Fujiwara boys hit hard but not hard enough to break bones — they only wanted to see him go down.
They had seen it.
Soma closed his eyes and let the pain sort itself by priority. This was a habit — not quite a habit natural to an eight-year-old boy, but he did not think about that. Not yet.
The afternoon sun angled across the paddy bank, warming the back of his neck. Frogs called somewhere in the rice. The sound of adults working in the distance — steady, unceasing, like the breathing of the village itself.
He tried to sit up.
And the world broke open.
---
Not pain. Not dizziness.
Memory.
It arrived without warning — like someone upending a full jar. The smell of coffee. Not the rough-roasted kind the village people sometimes brewed, but machine coffee, bitter and artificial, the smell of an air-conditioned office and fluorescent light. The sound of a keyboard. Someone calling a name —
Nishimura-san, did you send the material stress report?
Kenji Nishimura. Thirty-five years old. Mechanical engineer, specializing in biomechanics and materials science, mid-sized medical device company in Osaka. Unmarried. One-bedroom apartment, seventh floor, view of the parking structure.
Dead.
He remembered that more clearly than anything else — not because the death was dramatic, but because it was not. Scaffolding from a construction site next to his building. A falling steel bar. The wrong angle. Kenji had been walking toward the subway station, earphones playing a podcast about fluid mechanics, and then —
Nothing.
Until now.
Soma sat in the mud at the edge of the paddy field and let the wave of memory break at its own speed. He did not try to stop it. Did not try to pull it. Just sat and received it — the way he received data from a slow-uploading measuring device.
A colleague's face. The name remembered, the face already blurring. A spreadsheet of stress calculations on a monitor. A small kitchen on a Sunday morning. The smell of someone's shampoo, someone he had once liked and never told. Small things — not the large moments, just the scraps of an ordinary life dissolving in random order.
Kenji Nishimura had been nothing special.
And now he was sitting in the body of an eight-year-old boy in a paddy field in the sixteenth century.
---
He looked at his hands.
Small. Calloused from farmwork — not the callouses of a fighter but of someone who had spent years gripping hoes and sickles. Nails trimmed short but still dark underneath. A faint old scar on the back of his left hand — he did not remember how it had come, but this body remembered.
Kenji's mind began to run. No instruction required — it was professional reflex.
Observational data: thatched-roof earthen-wall architecture, rafters joined without iron nails — bound rope and wooden joinery. Clothing on passersby: rough indigo-dyed cloth, no synthetic fiber. Agricultural tools visible: wooden hoes tipped with rough iron, no rolled steel. No paved roads, no power lines, no material from the twentieth century.
Conclusion: Japan, estimated fifteenth to sixteenth century. Sengoku era or late Muromachi. More data needed for precise determination.
He realized what he was doing and stopped.
I just died and I'm writing a report in my head.
A moment of silence inside him. Then he decided: all right. If Kenji Nishimura's default coping mechanism was analysis, he would analyze. He could process the existential crisis later. Right now he needed to know who he was and where he was.
He closed his eyes and reached for the boy's memories.
---
They were there — just in a different layer, softer and more emotional than Kenji's memories. Like the difference between a photograph and a hand-drawn painting.
Tsuchiya Soma. Eight years old. Only son of Tsuchiya Hiroshi, a farmer who worked rented land under a local samurai family called Fujiwara. Mother had died when Soma was three — fever, rainy season, no medicine. The memory of his mother was only a scent now — something sweet and warm, too vague to name.
And the memory of this afternoon.
The Fujiwara boys — three of them, two to four years older than Soma — had cut him off on the road back from the fields. No particular reason required. The children of samurai beat the children of farmers the way adults kicked stones on the road — because they were there and because no one stopped them. Soma had not run. Not from bravery — experience had taught him that running made them more interested and they would chase.
Go down faster. Wait for them to get bored. Stand up after.
That had been eight-year-old Tsuchiya Soma's optimal strategy.
Kenji looked at that memory and felt something more uncomfortable than the physical pain. Not anger — but a cold recognition: this child had learned that lying down was the reasonable choice. And considered it normal.
---
The sound of hoofbeats.
Soma looked up on instinct.
A samurai was passing on the dirt road about ten steps from the paddy bank — alone, no attendants. Light armor, sword at his left hip. His horse walked at a slow pace. The man on the horse was scanning the fields with the eyes of someone who looked without truly seeing.
Around Soma, two farmers working nearby bowed immediately — reflexive, without thought. Heads low, eyes to the ground, tools still in hand.
Soma did not bow right away.
Not from defiance. Because Kenji was watching.
High center of gravity from sitting still on horseback — response to threats from below would be at least half a second slower than a standing man, due to required balance correction. Sword at left hip — right-handed, drawing requires turning the body. Scanning left to right — natural blind spot at lower right front. Horse not battle-trained — ears up but not taut, no startle reflex to sudden noise.
Information. Just information. He did not know what he would do with it but Kenji's mind collected by instinct.
The samurai's eyes were about to reach him.
Soma bowed.
Just in time — before that gaze arrived. He looked down at the mud beneath his hands and held the position until the sound of hoofbeats had entirely faded.
When he looked up, the road was empty.
The two farmers nearby had returned to work without glancing at him. They had not noticed that this child had bowed from calculation rather than fear. The difference was invisible from outside.
This is the first advantage, he realized. Eight years old and the farmer's son — he was nearly invisible to everyone who mattered in this system. Invisibility is a resource. He would not waste it.
---
His father was mending a broken hoe handle when Soma came inside.
Tsuchiya Hiroshi looked up at his son's face — the bruise forming at the cheekbone, the swollen lip — and looked back down without speaking. He stood, went inside, came back with a piece of rough cloth soaked in cold water.
Held it out to Soma. Sat down and continued mending the hoe.
Soma sat across from his father, the cloth pressed to his face, and watched him.
Tsuchiya Hiroshi was forty but looked a decade older — back slightly curved from years bent over the fields, hands cracked and calloused, temples already touched with gray. He was mending the hoe with complete focus — not because the work was difficult, but because this was something he could control.
Kenji looked at this man and felt something more uncomfortable than the bruise on his face: his father was not angry. There was no anger anywhere — not at the Fujiwara boys, not at the system that permitted it, not at himself for being unable to do anything. Only total acceptance and silence — like water that had found its level after many years and no longer wanted to flow.
This man gave up long ago, Kenji realized. And the frightening thing is that he does not know he gave up.
They ate dinner in silence. Rice and simple vegetable soup. Hiroshi ladled the larger portion into his son's bowl without comment.
---
Night fell.
Soma lay on a thin mat, staring up at the thatched ceiling while his father slept in the opposite corner of the room. Outside, insects. Wind. The sound of the village settling into sleep after another day's labor.
The two layers of memory were no longer colliding — they were slowly arranging themselves into something more unified. Not Kenji Nishimura. Not quite Tsuchiya Soma. Something in between, still finding the edges of itself.
He took inventory of what he had.
The knowledge of a thirty-five-year-old mechanical engineer — applied physics, biomechanics, materials science, enough mathematics to calculate in his head, enough physiology to understand how the human body worked. Language — he was thinking in the twentieth-century Japanese of his past life, but this body had grown up with sixteenth-century Japanese, and the two were quietly merging in a way he could not fully explain. Average physical health — no illness, no disability, no special gifts. Eight years old — time was the one resource he had in abundance.
And nothing else.
No status. No rights. No teacher. No weapons. No formal path leading from where he stood to anything he had just begun to recognize he wanted.
What did he want?
He looked again at the image of the samurai on horseback — the way the villagers had bowed without time to think. At his father and the unnamed acceptance in his silence. At the Fujiwara boys laughing as they walked away from a child lying in the mud.
This system operates through the acceptance of people like my father, he thought. Not with emotion — just observation. The daimyo has authority because the samurai submit. The samurai have authority because the farmers bow their heads. The ninja clans hold a monopoly because no one else knows how to do what they do. The whole system stands on a single assumption: that the position you were born into determines the limits of what you can become.
That assumption is wrong.
Not wrong morally — though perhaps that too. Wrong technically. Ninja technique is not magic transmitted through bloodlines. It is physics practiced. It is chemistry applied. It is psychology exploited. Those things can be learned — if you understand the principles behind them.
And he understood the principles.
Soma closed his eyes.
No oath. No heroic moment. Just an engineer accustomed to looking at a complex problem and beginning with the first step — not because the final step was clear, but because standing still was not an acceptable choice.
He slept.
The story began.
