Three days after the riverside mission, Soma went into Kamino alone.
Not assigned. Not for a specific task. Ginjiro had instructed him to begin moving in the wider world independently — to find opportunities rather than wait to be assigned them. He did not know what opportunity would look like until he saw it. That was the stated point.
He moved through the familiar routes: the main market, the south quarter, the western district near the gate where the relay contact sold vegetables every morning. He was not checking the relay point — checking it without reason would be a pattern, and patterns were information.
He was reading.
The market, after months of practice, had become a readable text. The current of people through a space, the pauses and accelerations, the nodes where information clustered and the channels through which it moved. Most of it was irrelevant to anything he needed — the ordinary commerce of ordinary people having ordinary days. He read it anyway, because Ginjiro had said: the value of reading what is irrelevant is that you become sensitive to what is not.
Near mid-morning, he turned down a narrow side street between two rows of old warehouses in the eastern quarter.
And heard something through a half-open door.
---
Not loud. Not the sound of a conversation intended to be overheard. A normal inside-voice conversation between at least two people, in a building with walls thin enough that a quiet street outside made the words audible if you were close and paying attention.
He continued past the door at his walking pace without pausing.
Three sentences caught as he passed.
Cannot wait any longer, next month's delivery is the opportunity —
— whether the Hayashi jonin knows —
— cannot know, that's the entire point —
He walked to the end of the street, turned left, walked another thirty steps, and stopped against a wall.
His heart was not racing. He noticed this — that his body had not reacted with the alarm response. He had heard something, recognized it as significant, and his body had continued walking at normal pace and paused at a normal stopping point rather than stopping abruptly at the door or changing pace in a way someone watching would notice.
Progress, Kenji noted clinically. Then set that aside and focused on what he had actually heard.
Next month's delivery is the opportunity. Whether the Hayashi jonin knows. Cannot know, that's the entire point.
The Hayashi jonin. Mikage Daichi — the person Ginjiro had named as the one who might recognize the name Shiro. A plan involving a delivery next month that depended on Mikage Daichi not having advance knowledge.
This connected to what Ginjiro had been explaining about Nishikawa's consolidation. If Nishikawa was moving to accelerate his timeline — if the weapons from the Portuguese merchant were arriving faster than the original schedule — a specific delivery being used as an opportunity was consistent with an attempt to eliminate or neutralize Hayashi before Hayashi understood the threat clearly enough to respond.
Soma stood against the wall for approximately two minutes.
Then made his way back toward the hut by the longer route, moving at the pace of someone without urgent purpose, reading the environment he passed through with the attention he always brought to movement through this terrain.
Ginjiro needed to hear this today.
---
Ginjiro had recovered enough to sit upright, though he was still not moving at his normal economy of motion. He listened to the three sentences without interrupting.
When Soma finished, Ginjiro was quiet for longer than usual.
"The delivery they're referring to," Soma said. "Is it the weapons shipment?"
"Possibly," Ginjiro said. "Or a component of it. The phased delivery I told you about — different parts of the agreement coming through different routes. A specific shipment being used as an 'opportunity' could mean—" He stopped. "Several things."
"Ambush. Interception of Hayashi personnel. Creation of an incident that allows Nishikawa to claim pretext for eliminating Hayashi openly." Soma had been running through the option space on the walk back. "All three depend on Hayashi not having advance knowledge. Which suggests someone within the network connecting Hayashi's intelligence to Nishikawa's operational plans."
"Or someone able to monitor Hayashi's information channels."
"Which is what Mizuchi does."
"Yes." Ginjiro looked at the wall. "This information needs to reach Mikage Daichi. Through a route that Mizuchi doesn't monitor."
Soma waited.
"You overheard three sentences through a door," Ginjiro said. "Three sentences are not proof. They are an indication of something — possibly significant, possibly not, depending on what the other sentences in that conversation contained that you did not hear."
"I know that. But if the indication is accurate and nothing is done — the cost of not acting is higher than the cost of acting on incomplete information."
"Yes." Ginjiro looked at him. "And you know what getting this to Mikage Daichi requires."
"It requires the approach I've been building toward. Someone who can make contact with his network with enough credibility to be heard rather than dismissed." Soma looked at him. "Ren Mikage. His son. He's the fastest path to Mikage Daichi and the least likely to create a problem for either side."
"You're not ready for that approach yet," Ginjiro said.
"I know."
"The three things you named — status, network knowledge, survival — you have partial progress on two and minimal on one."
"I know." Soma looked at him. "But you also said no timeline waits for readiness."
Ginjiro was quiet.
"The information I overheard may be wrong," Soma continued. "I'm not suggesting immediate action. I'm suggesting we need to work faster on what I don't have, because the window I thought was three years may be weeks."
"Or it may be nothing," Ginjiro said. "Three sentences through a warehouse door."
"Yes. Three sentences that used the name of the Hayashi jonin in a context of secrecy." Soma met his eyes. "I may be reading too much in. But I've been practicing reading for a year, and what I read in those three sentences was intent."
Silence.
Ginjiro looked at the space between them.
"Keep watching," he said finally. "Don't approach anything or anyone until we know more. But keep watching."
"And if more comes?"
"Then we decide what to do with more when more arrives." He looked at him. "Some things have to wait for the shape of the situation to become clearer. This is one."
Soma accepted that.
Not because the answer satisfied everything he needed — because it was the right answer for what they actually knew, at the stage they actually were. Acting on three sentences from a door was acting on insufficient data. Watching was using the time correctly.
---
On the way home, he walked past the spot on the road where a samurai had once stopped his father and knocked down a bundle of rice.
The road looked the same. The village ahead looked the same. The fields were at a different point in the seasonal cycle, the crops different, but the shape of the place was unchanged.
Soma stood on the road for a moment.
He had been building for a year. What did a year of building look like from inside it?
Not like much, from moment to moment. The bridge footwork was now completely automatic. The climbing technique was clean and efficient. The fall recovery was nearly correct even under unexpected direction. The reading of people and space had become something he did without consciously doing it — the way Ginjiro breathed without attending to his own breathing.
One year.
Three sentences through a warehouse door.
A delivery next month that represented an opportunity — for something that required Mikage Daichi not to know.
He continued down the road toward home.
Hiroshi would be inside. There would be rice. There would be the silence that did not need filling.
And somewhere ahead — in days or weeks, not years now — a moment when what he had been building would be asked to hold weight it had never been tested against.
He walked toward the light in his house window and did not think about any of it.
Just walked.
