Soma woke the morning after the meeting with Mikage Daichi and knew.
Not the kind of knowing that came from thinking — the kind that arrived while sleeping and was simply present when consciousness returned. The decision had been made somewhere beneath the level of deliberate reasoning, and by the time he opened his eyes it was already settled.
He would accept.
Not because the offer was without risk. Not because it was the safest choice or the clearest choice. Because among all the choices visible to him, this was the only one that didn't require him to pretend that something was other than what it was.
He lay on the mat in the pre-dawn dark and listened to Hiroshi's breathing in the other corner.
His father did not know the specifics of last night. Did not know about the letter, the document, the jonin at the corner table, the identification marker now in his pack. Did not know about Ginjiro — about what Ginjiro had been or what his death had meant.
Hiroshi knew: his son went places and came back. His son had someone who was teaching him. His son was different from other children in the village in ways that Hiroshi had named, once, as the road a farmer's child should not walk.
Hiroshi had added rice to his pack and said nothing more.
Soma looked up at the thatched ceiling he had stared at a hundred times in the year since the memory flood on the paddy bank.
This ceiling was where it had started. Or one version of where it had started.
The real start was older — the moment the Fujiwara boys walked away laughing, and the child lying in the mud decided that lying down faster was a reasonable strategy, and something in the layer below the child recognized that reasonable was not the same as acceptable.
He had been carrying that recognition for a year now.
Today he would carry it somewhere new.
---
He went through the village on the way to Kamino and noticed the familiar things.
The bridge where the footwork practice had begun — he crossed it without thinking about the crossing. The muscle memory so complete that his conscious attention was free for other things.
The paddy bank where he had sat after watching his father pick up the fallen rice bundles. The exact patch of ground. The light on it now was different from the light that day — different season, different angle — but the ground was the same ground.
The eastern forest edge — the oak tree where the first contact marker had been, now just a tree. Ginjiro was under a pine on the other side of those trees. The forest looked the same from outside as it had looked every time Soma had approached it over a year of approaching.
He walked through all of it without stopping.
Not without noticing — without stopping. The difference mattered. These places were what he had been. They would continue to be what he had been. That didn't require him to pause at each one.
He was going somewhere.
---
The tea house at the eastern gate.
Morning, not the hour of the previous evening meeting. Earlier — the tea house in the morning was a different space, louder, more transient, the kind of place where the presence of a child caused no particular attention.
Soma walked in and sat at the corner table.
The corner table where Mikage Daichi had sat last evening. Not coincidence — choice. A way of saying in action what he did not need to say in words.
He ordered tea.
The person who monitored the tea house on behalf of Hayashi — Soma had identified two of them over the months, one regular and one occasional — was at the table near the window, not currently looking in his direction.
They would report.
Mikage Daichi would be told: the boy came to the tea house, sat at the corner table, ordered tea and waited.
Mikage Daichi would understand.
Soma sat and drank his tea and waited.
---
The jonin arrived fifty-three minutes later.
Not alone — Ren was two steps behind him, not inside after the first moment. Ren stopped at the door. Mikage Daichi walked to the table.
He looked at Soma in the corner seat.
Soma looked back.
The jonin sat — not at the corner, at the position across from it. The position of a guest rather than a host. He had done this deliberately and they both knew it.
Two cups of tea arrived without being requested. The person running the tea house understood what was happening at certain tables.
"You understand the conditions," Mikage Daichi said. Not a question — confirmation.
"I do," Soma said.
"Two words," the jonin said. The briefest possible formulation. "That was all?"
"That was all."
Mikage Daichi placed a small folded cloth on the table. Not the identification marker — something different, smaller, with a specific notation on the surface that Soma would need to learn to read.
"The relay system," the jonin said. "How to use the contact points I have in the region. Different from what you learned from Shiro, so you don't confuse the two." He paused. "Ren will explain the details when you're ready to receive them."
"When?"
"When you're ready means when you've had enough time to think about what you've committed to," Mikage Daichi said. "Not today. Come back in three days."
He stood up.
At the door, he paused in the same spot he had paused the previous evening.
"The road you're on," he said again — the same words.
Soma waited.
"He said that about you in the letter," the jonin said. "And then he wrote: treat it carefully, because a person who walks a road no one expected them to walk either becomes something genuinely new or they become a cautionary example. Which one depends almost entirely on whether they remember why they started."
He walked out.
Ren was no longer at the door.
---
Soma sat alone in the tea house for a few minutes after they left.
Not because he needed to think. Because there were transitions that deserved a moment of stillness before the next thing began.
Ginjiro's lessons had included this — the stillness before action, the breath before the commitment of weight. You could move without that stillness. Many people did. But the movement was different in quality when it came from a grounded place rather than from momentum.
He sat until the stillness was real rather than performed.
Then stood up, left the coins for the tea, and walked out of the eastern gate into the road heading north.
Back toward the village. Back toward Hiroshi making the morning rice. Back toward the ordinary continuing in the ordinary way it always continued, regardless of what had just changed.
He walked home.
And on the walk home he thought about what Mikage Daichi had read in Ginjiro's letter: either something genuinely new or a cautionary example.
He did not know which one he would become.
But he knew he would not become the cautionary kind by forgetting why he had started.
He remembered.
His father picking up rice bundles from the road while a samurai watched.
A village that bowed before it had time to think.
A system that held its shape through the acceptance of people who believed no other shape was possible.
He remembered.
That was enough to keep walking.
