Ren used the private contact point again four days after the operation.
The four days had been quiet in a way that Soma had learned to read as the quiet of people doing concentrated work rather than the quiet of nothing happening. Kaoru had reported no unusual movement in the eastern quarter — the three lodgings had been empty since the night of the operation, and the area had returned to its ordinary commercial rhythm. The coordinator's exit direction had not produced further visible trace.
Mikage Daichi's investigation of the source inside his network was running silently, which was how such investigations ran when they were being done correctly.
Mori Takeshi's investigation of Hana and Itsuki was also running. Not silently — Itsuki had noted two more confirmation inquiries in Shiro, different questions from different people but with the same character: building a case, filling in detail, adding specificity to something that was already mostly assembled.
Soma had been tracking both investigations in parallel and had not been able to do anything about either one except wait and continue doing the work correctly.
Ren's message: my father wants to meet. Come to the secondary point. Tomorrow morning.
---
Mikage Daichi was alone at the secondary point — no Ren, no attendants. The doorway near the grain warehouse, the same recessed alcove where Kaoru had met him the week before.
The jonin looked rested in a way that someone who had spent four days doing concentrated work and had then slept looked rested. Not refreshed — recalibrated.
"The source," he said when Soma arrived. Not a greeting. A subject.
"You found it."
"I found the direction." Mikage Daichi looked at the street visible from the alcove. "Not a person inside Hayashi's operational structure. A person adjacent to it — someone who has legitimate access to information about Hayashi's activity through a channel that was established for a different purpose and has been used for this one."
"A channel you established," Soma said.
"A channel I established and didn't close when the original purpose ended." His voice did not change. "I'm telling you this because you asked about earlier operations and whether they were compromised. The answer is: some were, some weren't. The channel was used selectively — not everything that moved through the relay was accessible to the source. Specific types of information, specific timing windows."
"The Okada mission."
"Not accessible through this channel. The Yuki movement — possibly. The Tanaka Ryuji report — yes." He looked at Soma. "I'm telling you the full account because you deserve it and because partial information would lead you to incorrect conclusions about the scope of what was affected."
Soma sat with this for a moment.
The Tanaka Ryuji report had been accessible. Which meant the source had known that Soma had confirmed Tanaka's involvement with Mizuchi's network. And had potentially passed that information to the coordinator — who had passed it further.
Which might explain how Mizuchi had been able to locate Tanaka for the consequences that had followed.
"Tanaka Ryuji," Soma said. "The consequences he experienced after my report. Were they connected to this channel?"
"Possibly," Mikage Daichi said. "I can't confirm the full chain. What I can tell you is that the information from your report traveled further than I intended."
Soma was quiet.
"This does not change your culpability in the Tanaka situation," the jonin said. "You reported correctly and you have acknowledged the failure of not asking how it would be used. That remains your lesson to carry. The source's existence is a separate problem in my network, not an excuse for the choice you made."
"I know," Soma said. "I wasn't looking for it to be an excuse."
"I know you weren't." Mikage Daichi looked at him. "That's why I told you."
---
They stood in the alcove for a moment in the particular silence of two people who have exchanged difficult information and are letting it settle before the next thing.
"Mori Takeshi," Soma said.
"Yes," the jonin said. "That is the other reason I asked you here."
Soma waited.
"The operation four nights ago produced a partial result and revealed a structural problem in my network," Mikage Daichi said. "Both of those things are visible to people inside the clan who pay attention. Mori Takeshi pays attention." He paused. "He has used the partial result and the revealed problem to advance the case he has been building. Not falsely — accurately. He is arguing that the variables outside direct clan control contributed to the situation: that information moved through channels I do not fully control, that people operating in my network's adjacent space create access points I cannot fully monitor, that the source problem may be connected to those access points."
"Is he right?"
"The connection he's drawing is not established," the jonin said. "The source I identified operated through a channel I established, not through channels connected to you or to the people in Shiro. The logic of his argument has a gap." He looked at Soma. "But the gap is in a place that is difficult to demonstrate without revealing the specifics of the source investigation, which I am not willing to do while the investigation is still running."
"Which means his argument is currently unanswerable."
"Currently."
Soma processed this.
Mori Takeshi's case: unverified connection, logical gap, but unanswerable in the present context because refuting it would require revealing information that needed to stay protected.
And the jonin was telling him this.
"You're telling me because you want me to understand the situation accurately before you tell me what you've decided," Soma said.
Mikage Daichi looked at him.
"Yes," he said.
"What have you decided?"
The jonin was quiet for a moment — not the quiet of someone deciding, the quiet of someone choosing how to say what had already been decided.
"Mori Takeshi's concern is legitimate," he said. "Not his specific argument about the connection — but the underlying concern. Variables outside direct control do create access points. People operating adjacent to the network do create information exposure. These are real problems regardless of whether they were causal in this specific situation." He paused. "A jonin who dismisses legitimate concerns from a senior member because he doesn't like the conclusion the senior member draws from them is not managing his clan well."
"So you're acting on his concern," Soma said.
"I am acting on the legitimate version of his concern," Mikage Daichi said. "Not the specific case he has built — the underlying structural problem he is pointing at correctly even if his specific argument is wrong."
"What does that mean for Hana and Itsuki?"
"It means I am going to formalize the relationship," the jonin said. "Not bring them into the clan structure — they wouldn't accept that and I don't have the standing to offer it in a way that would protect them anyway. Formalize means: acknowledge to the relevant people inside Hayashi that these individuals exist, that their involvement has been deliberate rather than inadvertent, and that I have assessed them and determined their presence in the adjacent network is known and managed rather than unknown and uncontrolled."
Soma stood with that.
"That changes their status from unknown variables to known quantities," he said.
"Yes. Which removes the primary basis for Mori Takeshi's concern while requiring him to accept that his underlying point about control was heard and addressed." The jonin looked at him. "It also requires them to accept a level of visibility they haven't had before. Not operational integration — visibility. People inside Hayashi will know they exist. That is a different exposure than operating in the shadows."
"They need to agree to this."
"Yes. That's what I'm asking you to communicate to them." He met Soma's eyes. "I am not asking you to persuade them. I am asking you to give them the accurate picture of what I'm proposing and what the alternative is, and let them decide."
"What is the alternative?"
"The alternative is that I do not formalize the relationship, Mori Takeshi continues to build his case, and eventually the case reaches a point where I am required to act on it formally — which means cutting the connection between you and the people in Shiro at minimum, or taking direct action against them if his case is strong enough to require it." He paused. "I don't want that outcome. But I can't prevent it indefinitely if the underlying structural concern isn't addressed."
"And the formalization addresses it."
"The formalization demonstrates that I am managing the adjacent network, not ignoring it. That is the thing Mori Takeshi is actually asking for — not the elimination of the people in Shiro, but evidence that they are known and managed. He will accept that demonstration even if he would prefer the elimination."
Soma looked at the street outside the alcove.
Two legitimate things in tension. Mori Takeshi's concern about uncontrolled variables — legitimate. Hana and Itsuki's right to operate in the way they had chosen — also legitimate. The jonin was trying to honor both without destroying either.
Whether that was possible depended on whether Hana and Itsuki would accept the visibility that made it possible.
"I'll bring it to them today," Soma said.
"Tell them also," Mikage Daichi said, "that I am not asking for their trust. I am asking for their informed decision. The distinction matters."
"I'll tell them."
---
He went to Shiro in the afternoon.
Hana first — because Hana's assessment of the proposal would shape his understanding of how to present it to Itsuki, and because Hana had the longer view of what formalization meant in the context of how clans treated people adjacent to their structures.
She listened to the full account without interrupting.
When he finished, she was quiet for a long time. Not thinking — the silence of someone who had already thought about versions of this and was placing the specific version in front of her against the versions she had already considered.
"The jonin is doing something unusual," she said finally.
"What?"
"Most jonin in his position would have resolved this by cutting the connection. It's simpler. Lower risk to the clan structure. The fact that he's trying to find an arrangement that doesn't require cutting the connection—" She stopped. "He values what you've built more than the structural cleanliness of eliminating it."
"He's managing two legitimate things," Soma said. "His words."
"Yes." Hana looked at the courtyard wall. "Two legitimate things. That's an unusual frame for a jonin to use." She paused. "It's your frame, isn't it. He learned it from working with you."
Soma had not thought about it that way. He thought about it now.
"Possibly," he said.
"People who work closely with someone who thinks a certain way sometimes start thinking that way without noticing." She looked at him. "It's not a criticism. It means the work has had an effect in a direction that matters."
Soma stayed with that.
"The formalization," Hana said. "What visibility specifically?"
"People inside Hayashi who need to know about the adjacent network will be told that you and Itsuki exist and that your involvement has been deliberate and assessed. Not your names necessarily — your functions. What you contribute. That it's known and managed."
"Will they know where we are?"
"I don't know the specifics of what the jonin will disclose. I can ask."
"Ask," she said. "Before I decide. I need to know what visible means precisely." She looked at him. "I've been invisible in this region for three years. Visible to one person — you — then to a small number of people through the work we've done together. The expansion of that visibility has a cost I need to understand before I accept it."
"That's the right question to ask," Soma said.
"I know it is." She met his eyes. "I'll give you an answer when I have the answer to my question."
---
Itsuki's response was different.
He listened to the same full account and was quiet for a shorter time than Hana — not because he had considered it less carefully but because the specific question he needed answered was different and simpler.
"The formalization — does it change what I can and cannot do?" he asked.
"Not operationally," Soma said. "The jonin's proposal is visibility, not integration. You would still operate independently. The change is that specific people inside Hayashi know you exist as a known and managed element rather than an unknown variable."
"Does it change my condition?"
"Which condition?"
"The one I stated when I agreed to be part of this." Itsuki looked at him directly. "That I don't do things that harm people who haven't chosen to be involved. Does the formalization create obligations that conflict with that condition?"
Soma thought about it carefully.
"I don't think so," he said. "But I can't guarantee it. The formalization creates a relationship between you and Hayashi's structure that didn't formally exist before. Relationships create expectations. Whether those expectations would ever conflict with your condition — I don't know in advance."
Itsuki absorbed this.
"Honest," he said. "Most people would have said no to get the answer they wanted."
"I don't want an answer you give because I reassured you incorrectly," Soma said. "I want the answer you give because you understood the actual situation."
"I know." Itsuki looked at his map. "My answer is: yes to the formalization, with the explicit understanding that my condition remains unchanged and is part of what is being formalized. If Hayashi understands that I operate according to that condition and accepts the formalization with that understanding — then they are accepting the condition as part of the arrangement. Which makes it harder for them to later argue that the condition creates a problem."
Soma looked at him.
"That's a more sophisticated framing than I had," he said.
"I've been thinking about the structure of agreements since you first described the situation," Itsuki said. "The condition built into the formalization rather than existing outside it — that's a stronger position than the condition as a separate unilateral statement." He paused. "Ask the jonin if he will accept that framing."
"I'll ask him."
---
On the road back to Kamino, Soma thought about what he was carrying.
Hana: yes with a specific question about the scope of visibility that needed an answer first.
Itsuki: yes with a sophisticated framing that built the condition into the structure of the agreement itself.
Both responses were more careful and more thoughtful than he had expected. Both came from people who had been thinking about the implications of their situations independently, without being told to.
He had given them the information and let them decide. That was the thing Mikage Daichi had asked him to do — not persuade, convey and let decide. He had done it.
And both of them had arrived at positions that were, in different ways, more structurally sound than the position Soma himself had been holding.
Ren had said once: a person who never acts outside approved parameters is a tool, not an ally.
Hana and Itsuki had been acting as allies — not just doing what was asked but thinking about the structure of the situation and proposing improvements.
Soma walked into Kamino in the early evening and used the relay point to leave a brief message for Ren: I have responses from both people in Shiro. Neither is a simple yes or no. I need to speak to your father again when he's available.
The reply came back before he reached the village road.
Tomorrow morning. Same point.
---
Hiroshi was awake when he came home — unusual for this hour, sitting at the table with the lamp turned down low, not reading or working, just sitting.
He looked up when Soma came through the door.
"You've been in Shiro," he said.
"Yes."
"The people there — they're still in the same situation."
"Changing," Soma said. "Not the same. Something is being worked out."
Hiroshi looked at him for a long moment. The face-reading look.
"It's going to ask something of you that the other things haven't asked," he said.
Not a question.
"Yes," Soma said.
"Do you know what?"
"Not exactly. Something about—" He stopped. "About being the person other people are arranging around rather than the person who is only doing the arranging."
Hiroshi was quiet.
"That's heavier than the other kind," he said.
"I know."
His father looked at the lamp. Looked back at him.
"Eat something," he said. "Then sleep. Heavy things are easier to carry when you haven't been hungry."
Soma sat down at the table.
The rice was cold. He ate it anyway.
Hiroshi blew out the lamp when he finished and they both went to sleep in the dark of the house that was the same house it had always been, while outside, the village settled into the quiet that came at the end of every day regardless of what had happened during it.
Heavy things were easier to carry when you hadn't been hungry.
Soma kept that thought until he was asleep.
