The official registration notice had gone up overnight.
Lysandra found it on the Academy quarter's main bulletin board at the sixth hour — a large printed document with the Royal seal at the top, the lettering formal and precise in the way of official communications that have been drafted by someone whose primary concern is unambiguity. She stood in front of it in the cold morning with her hands in her coat pockets and read it in full, which took longer than it should have because she was not reading for information — she had already had the information, compiled from secondary sources over the past two weeks — but for something else. The weight of it. The specific gravity of a deadline expressed as official language and public posting.
Registration: First of Frostmonth. Ten days away. Preliminary rounds: Third through Seventh. Two weeks. Grand Final: Evening of the Winter Solstice. Six weeks.
She did the calculation she had already done a dozen times, with the same result. Six weeks brought her to the Winter Solstice. The Winter Solstice was, in the Moon-Laurel tradition, the night of maximum magical potential — the longest night, when the Cadence energy of the world gathered in its annual peak and the boundary between what was ordinarily possible and what the old workings required became permeable. The Rite of Lustration had always been performed on the Winter Solstice. This was not coincidence. It had never been coincidence. She had known when she arrived in Oakhaven, in the weeks before Frostmonth, that the timeline was what it was, and that the Festival was the mechanism that would give her access to the stage at the Solitude Cathedral on the one night that mattered.
The crystallization in her foot was slightly worse this morning. She had noted this in the journal, applied the warming tincture, and made the decision not to adjust her rehearsal schedule on the basis of a single day's data. One day was noise. She required a pattern before she modified her approach.
She pulled the notice off the board.
This was, technically, a minor violation of public posting regulations. She folded it into her coat pocket and walked toward the cathedral.
He was already there.
This had stopped surprising her, in the four days since they had formalized the arrangement. He arrived early. He did not acknowledge arriving early. She did not comment on it. This was, she had decided, their particular protocol for the awkward fact that he was consistently more committed to the rehearsals than his stated position of contractual neutrality implied — a protocol that involved both of them treating the discrepancy as if it did not exist, which was a comfortable fiction for entirely different reasons on each of their parts.
He was sitting on the stone bench beneath the outer edge of the moon-laurel canopy, the violin case at his feet, reading something in the morning light with the focused attention he applied to anything he engaged with seriously. He looked up when she came through the gate.
"You're early," he said.
"So are you," she said, and sat on the bench's far end and pulled the registration notice from her pocket. She unfolded it and held it out. "Read it."
He took it. He read it — thoroughly, she noted, taking the time to process the actual language rather than skimming for relevant numbers. This was something she had observed about him: he read things completely. It was a quality that she found simultaneously admirable and slightly anxiety-inducing, given the amount of things in her immediate vicinity that she would prefer he not examine with that particular quality of attention.
"Six weeks to the Solstice final," he said.
"Yes."
"Ten days to registration."
"Yes."
He looked at the notice for a moment longer, then folded it precisely and set it on the bench between them. "What do we have that's ready?"
She looked at him. The question landed slightly differently than she had anticipated — not the resistance she had been prepared for, not the we're not entering this discussion she had braced against, but a functional assessment of current state. She adjusted.
"The first movement," she said. "The structure is there. The resonance is uneven but the foundation is built." She paused. "The second and third movements I haven't shown you yet. The second is the most demanding technically — for the violin. The third requires something I can't describe in advance. It has to be felt."
He processed this. "The resonance scoring is weighted heavily this year."
"I know."
"The level of Cadence work I'm currently producing is not competitive at the upper tier."
"I know that too." She looked at him steadily. "It will be."
"You're confident of that."
"I am."
He looked at her with the slight narrowing of attention that indicated he was evaluating a claim for its credibility. She met this without flinching, because she was telling the truth — or as close to truth as she ever got with him, which was in this case sufficient. She knew what they could produce together. She had felt it in the three sessions they had already had, in the way the Aetheris responded to her movement with a specificity that no other instrument she had ever worked near had managed, in the way his playing changed when he stopped thinking about what he was doing and started hearing what the movement required. She knew what it was building toward. She had seen it in her tribe's records, in the descriptions of the Rite at its full power, and she knew that what they were doing in the cold mornings in the cathedral courtyard was the foundation of something that, on the Winter Solstice, would be what she had come to Oakhaven to make.
She would not tell him that. But she could tell him it would be enough for the competition, because that was also true.
"Three sessions per week isn't sufficient," he said, after a moment. "If the preliminary rounds are in two weeks, we need more time than three sessions allows."
She had not anticipated this specific objection, which arrived not as resistance but as a practical adjustment. "How many sessions do you think we need?"
"Five. Possibly six in the final week before the preliminaries." He looked at the notice. "The early-morning schedule works. I can keep the evenings in addition if the sessions are structured differently."
"Differently how?"
"Morning sessions for the full-piece work — what we've been doing. Evening sessions for the technical elements in isolation. The Aetheris's resonance output is not currently consistent. I need to address that separately from the choreographic integration."
She looked at him. The morning light was coming through the moon-laurel canopy at the low angle of early Frostmonth, and it fell across his face in a way that made the dark circles under his eyes more visible and also, she noticed without intending to, illuminated the particular quality of his attention when he was engaged in a problem he found genuinely interesting: the slight forward orientation, the hands that had moved to the violin case without his awareness, the focus that had replaced the careful blankness he wore in spaces that required him to be present without being invested.
This was what he looked like when he was working.
She had been trying to get him here for two weeks.
"All right," she said.
He seemed faintly surprised by the absence of resistance. "All right."
"Five sessions per week. Morning and evening in alternating structure. We can discuss the specific schedule after today's session." She stood, which was her signal for beginning, and moved to the center of the courtyard. "Today I want to show you the second movement. Just watch first. Same as before."
He stood too, and picked up the violin case, and for a moment they were both standing in the cold courtyard with the moon-laurel blossoms above them and the old stone beneath and the competition notice folded precisely on the bench, and there was a quality to the moment that she did not have language for — the particular feel of a thing that is about to become different from what it has been, the breath before the phrase begins.
She went to her starting position.
He went to his.
The second movement was harder. She had told him the truth about that. It asked more of the violin — asked for the full range of Cadence Manipulation that he was not yet consistently accessing, required the resonance to build and hold in a way that the first movement, with its gentler pace and more forgiving structure, did not demand. She moved through it knowing he was watching, knowing he was finding the sound of it in his hands even as she went, knowing that what he would hear when he began to play would be something he had not played before.
When the bow came down on the strings, the sound that emerged was rough — not the careful, tentative quality of the early sessions, but rough in a different way: the roughness of something larger than technique that is trying to come through technique and not quite managing the transition. The Aetheris resonated in a way she felt in the soles of her feet, in the specific place where the crystallization had begun, a vibration that moved through the stone and into her body in a way that was both uncomfortable and exactly right.
She moved into the most demanding passage of the second movement.
He stayed with her.
Not perfectly. There were moments where the music fell behind the movement, where the resonance collapsed and had to rebuild, where she could feel him reaching for something that was technically beyond where he currently was. But he stayed. He did not stop. He pushed into the difficulty rather than away from it, and in the third pass through the passage the magic appeared — not the thin shimmer of the early sessions but something with weight and direction, a visible brightening of the air between them that moved and responded to both of them at once, the specific quality of Cadence Manipulation at full resonance.
The flowers opened everywhere at once.
Every crack in every paver in the courtyard, all at once — white and silver, hundreds of them, blooming in the second of the peak and beginning to fade immediately, the brief field of flowers around her feet spreading outward as the magic crested and then contracting as it passed, leaving the old stone bare and darker for the contrast.
He stopped playing.
She stopped moving.
The silence was complete. The last flowers were fading at the edges of the courtyard. The Aetheris still vibrated faintly in his hands, a residual hum at the edge of audibility.
He was looking at the courtyard. At the fading flowers. Then at his hands. Then, slowly, at her.
She looked back at him from the center of the courtyard with the fading flowers around her feet and the cold morning light in her eyes.
"That," he said, quietly. Not a question. Not analysis. Just the acknowledgment of something that had happened that required no other category.
"Yes," she said. Equally quiet. "That."
He lowered the violin and stood with it at his side and did not say anything else, and she did not say anything else, and the courtyard held them both in the particular silence of people who have just made something together that they did not make alone and are standing in the specific gravity of that fact.
After a long moment, he said: "Monday. Same time?"
"Same time," she said.
He nodded, once, with the precision of a man confirming a commitment that is also, she understood, the acknowledgment of something larger than a rehearsal schedule. He put the violin away. He picked up the case. He walked toward the gate.
At the gate, without turning around, he said: "The second movement. There's a passage in the middle where the resonance collapses. I'll have it by Monday."
"I know you will," she said.
He left.
She stood in the courtyard with the last of the flowers fading around her feet and the cold settling back into the stone and the Frostmonth sky above the cathedral's broken towers, and she pressed her hand flat against her sternum and felt her heartbeat, steady and even and present, and she thought: six weeks.
Six weeks. The Solstice. The Rite.
She thought about the way the Aetheris had hummed after the music stopped, the way the resonance had lingered in the air between them like a conversation that had not quite finished.
She thought about his face when the flowers opened.
She told herself the timeline was fixed and the plan was sound and the feelings she was not naming were not relevant to either of those facts.
She told herself this several times on the walk back to Willowgate Street.
By the time she reached her door, she had almost persuaded herself it was true.
