The canal was blue.
Not the uniform silver-grey it had been for four months — not the flat, light-absorbing non-color of a world seen through grief. Blue. Dark blue, specifically, the particular shade of deep water in the morning before the sun has fully committed to the day, when the light is still deciding between possibilities.
Valerius stood at his bedroom window at the sixth hour and looked at it for a long time.
He did not make a production of this. He looked at the canal, noted its color with the precision of someone who had been cataloguing the world's gradual return to chromatic information as a form of data collection rather than an emotional event, and then went to make tea. The tea was served in the blue-glazed pot Mrs. Aldren kept on the second shelf, which he noticed was, in fact, blue, in a way he had been failing to register for some time.
He stood in the kitchen with the blue pot and thought about nothing in particular.
The Academy library opened at the eighth hour. He was there at the eighth hour and four minutes, which was as close to its opening as his particular relationship with punctuality allowed him to arrive without being the person who waited at the door, which was a thing he had opinions about.
The collection he wanted was in the restricted stacks — not restricted in the sense of requiring formal permission, simply restricted to scholars with demonstrated research intent, which Valerius had accumulated more than enough of over his years at the Academy to access without question. He found the relevant section without difficulty. What he did not find without difficulty was the specific information he was looking for.
The Academy's records on Aethelgard's pre-Consolidation tribal dance traditions were extensive in some areas and conspicuously thin in others. The major traditions were well-documented: the Resonance Schools of the central plains, the Maritime Cadence practices of the southern coast, the harvest-ritual movement traditions of the eastern farming communities. All of these were present in multiple copies, with scholarly commentary, with performance notation, with historical context.
The Moon-Laurel tradition was present in three documents, none of which were complete.
The first was a brief entry in a compendium of minor magical traditions, dated approximately sixty years prior. It described Weave-Dancing in general terms — the practice of using movement to agitate ambient Cadence particles, the known relationship between Weave-Dancing and Cadence instrument resonance — without specifics of technique or tradition. The entry had been annotated by a later hand, the ink a different age: *See supplementary records, Inquisitor's Archive, restricted access.*
The second was a fragment — a torn section of a larger document, the edges irregular in the way of paper that has been deliberately removed rather than simply deteriorated. What remained described a ceremony, the name of which was partially legible: *Rite of L—*, the rest obscured. The description was in the careful, neutral language of scholarly observation, which made its content harder to misread: a ceremony performed on the Winter Solstice, requiring a Cadence instrument of Royal caliber, performed by the final practitioner of the tradition in the event of the tradition's end.
He read this twice.
The third document was a personnel record from the Inquisitor's office, dated approximately twenty-five years prior. It concerned an investigation into a tribe operating outside the southern walls of Oakhaven — a tribe identified as the Moon-Laurel clan, practitioners of unlicensed magical traditions. The record described the investigation's findings in bureaucratic language and concluded with a recommendation for the suppression of the tradition's public practice. The last page of the record was missing. The cover bore a stamp, partially faded, that he recognized as the seal of the Inquisitor's office from the period — and below it, in small script that he read and then read again: *Reviewed and authorized: S. Vance, Judicial Composer, Royal Academy.*
He sat with the document in his hands for a long time.
S. Vance. Seraphine Vance. His mother.
The annotation did not specify what she had reviewed and authorized, because the last page was missing. The investigation's outcome was not recorded in the remaining documents. He had the beginning of something and the absence of its conclusion, which was, he was aware, a structure designed to produce a very specific kind of unease.
He replaced the documents exactly as he had found them and left the restricted stacks.
Elowen found him at his usual table in the main library — she had a gift for this that he had long since stopped questioning. She was carrying the new tincture, as promised, and also a small parcel from the market that turned out to contain two spiced rolls from the baker near the East Gate, which she knew he preferred to the Academy's dining hall offerings.
"Research?" she asked, settling into the chair across from him with the ease of someone who considers the chair across from him a natural habitat.
"Background," he said. "For the performance."
She looked at what he had been reading, which was now nothing — he had replaced the documents — and then at his face, which was, he was aware, doing something he was not fully controlling. "Background on what specifically?"
"Dance traditions. The style Aurelia uses is unfamiliar to me. I was looking for context."
Elowen nodded, in the way that indicated she had received the information and was filing it alongside other information she was also receiving. She was perceptive in a quiet, accumulative way — not dramatic insight, just the steady building of an accurate picture from small consistent observations. He had always appreciated this about her, and occasionally found it inconvenient.
"She came to watch a rehearsal yesterday," he said. "Elowen."
"I know. You told me she could."
"What did you think?"
A pause. Elowen looked at the parcel of spiced rolls, then at him, with the expression of someone organizing their response with care. "I think she's extraordinary," she said, at last. "What she does with the magic — the way it responds to her movement. I've never seen anything like it." Another pause, shorter. "I also think you play differently when she's there."
"We've been rehearsing for two weeks. The work is better because we've been doing it."
"Yes," Elowen said, in a tone that agreed with this sentence and also implied it was not the only true thing about the situation.
He ate the spiced roll and did not respond to the implication.
The afternoon rehearsal was the first evening session of the new intensive schedule, held inside the cathedral nave rather than the courtyard because the temperature had dropped below the threshold at which outdoor rehearsal became counterproductive. The nave's acoustics were different from the courtyard's — more resonant, the stone walls throwing sound back in complex ways that required adjustment, the echo carrying the Aetheris's output further and with more color than the open air did.
She was already inside when he arrived, moving through a slow practice sequence in the section of nave nearest the high windows, where the late afternoon light came through the empty tracery in geometric patterns across the ancient floor. She did not stop when he entered. He set up without disturbing her, the familiar ritual of case placement and bow check accomplished in the near-dark of the nave's far end while she continued her sequence in the light.
He watched her. Not analytically. The distinction had become clearer to him recently — the difference between watching to learn something and watching because he had run out of reasons to look elsewhere.
In the sixth phrase of her sequence, moving through a turn that brought her face into the angled light, she shook out her left hand. The gesture lasted perhaps two seconds, fingers loose, wrist rotating in the small circle of a person checking for circulation. Then she continued, seamlessly, no break in the sequence's rhythm.
He noted it. He had noted it four times before.
When she finished and came toward him, he said nothing about it. They ran the full performance twice — once for structure, once for resonance scoring, the second run producing Cadence output significantly above the preliminary round levels and prompting, toward the end of the second movement, a brief spontaneous bloom of light from the Aetheris that neither of them had produced intentionally. The instrument was warming to the work. He could feel it in the way a musician feels an instrument settle into a performance, the slight responsiveness, the sense of something that has been quiet beginning to speak.
In the break between runs, they sat in the nave — she against the base of one of the great stone columns, he on the shallow step of the altar platform, the candlelight between them making the space feel smaller than it was. She was looking at the high windows. He was looking at his hands.
"The tracery," she said. "The geometric patterns. Do you know what they meant? Originally."
"Cathedral symbolism. The standard iconographic program for the period — cycles of light and darkness, resonance and silence."
"Moon-Laurel iconography uses the same forms." She was still looking at the windows. "Different interpretation. Not cycles — simultaneous states. Light and darkness at once."
He looked up at the windows. The empty tracery in the fading light. "You know the Moon-Laurel tradition."
"I know some of it." Careful. Present tense, indefinite, structurally deflecting.
He looked at her. She looked at the windows. He thought about the document in the restricted stacks, the torn last page, his mother's initials at the bottom of an authorization he couldn't read. He thought about asking. He thought about what she would say and what she would not say and whether pushing the point was the right action when everything that had been built between them in two weeks was built partly on his decision not to push.
He looked back at his hands.
"The second run," he said. "The light at the end of movement two. That wasn't technique."
"No," she agreed.
"What was it?"
She was quiet for a moment. Then: "The Aetheris deciding something."
He turned this over. "What was it deciding?"
"I think it was deciding to trust the situation." She finally turned to look at him, amber eyes with the candlelight in them. "Instruments do that. They take time to decide."
He looked at her for a long moment. Then he looked back at his hands, which were doing the thing they did when he was thinking about music — the fingers moving in patterns that had no sound, conversations he was having with himself.
"The second run," he said, after a while. "I was playing to something specific. Not the room. Not the performance structure."
She waited.
"The bar forty-one extension we discussed. When I played it tonight, I was playing it to—" He stopped. Started again. "It resolved differently than I expected. Because the thing I was playing to moved."
She was very still.
"You changed the movement in bar forty-one," he said. "The adjustment you mentioned. You implemented it."
"Yes."
"And I heard it."
"Yes," she said, again, with a different quality.
He looked at her. The candlelight made the tracery shadows move across the floor between them, the geometric patterns shifting with the small movements of the flame. He thought about the document in the restricted stacks. He thought about the winter solstice and the rite whose name he had read half of and the instrument required and the tradition being performed by its last practitioner.
He thought: I am assembling something, and I don't have all the pieces, and I don't know if the pieces I'm missing are things she will tell me or things I will have to find another way.
He said none of this.
"Second run was better," he said. "We should aim for that level consistently by the semi-final."
"Agreed," she said.
They ran the third movement. The cathedral held them in its centuries-old resonance, the sound of the Aetheris filling the nave in a way that demanded nothing and gave everything back, and the world outside was cold and blue and more color than it had been in a long time.
