He arrived at the cathedral at the fourth hour, which was two hours before Lysandra had specified.
He was aware of this. He had calculated it going out the door — the fourth hour, Caelum and Lysandra expected at the sixth, a two-hour margin that served no purpose he was willing to name — and had gone anyway, because the alternative was another hour in the practice room pretending he was not thinking about the specific problem of Aurelia Thorne, which had proven less effective than the alternative of simply going to the cathedral and being in the problem rather than adjacent to it.
The courtyard was empty when he arrived. He sat on the stone bench beneath the outer edge of the moon-laurel canopy and put the violin case on the bench beside him and looked at the cathedral's entrance arch, which framed a rectangle of Frostmonth sky that was the particular pale grey of late morning cloud cover.
The courtyard was, he had decided, a good place to think. This was not the kind of assessment he usually made about spaces — he tended to experience them architecturally rather than emotionally, evaluating acoustics and sight lines rather than atmosphere. But there was something about the Solitude Cathedral's specific quality of abandonment that functioned, for him, as a kind of relief. The cathedral had no expectations of him. It had not heard him play. It did not know his name or his family or the weight of what had been done in the name of the Vance lineage. It was old stone and silver flowers, and it did not require anything from him, and he had not fully registered how exhausting it was to exist in spaces that did until he found one that didn't.
He heard them before he saw them: Caelum's familiar heavy step on the cobblestones of the outer path, and alongside it a lighter, more variable rhythm — she moved differently on pavement than on stone, he noted, the irregularity not a lack of control but a kind of excess of it, as if her body had more options for motion than most people's and was constantly making small choices among them.
Caelum saw him and did not, to his credit, make a production of the surprise. "You're here," he said.
"I was in the area."
"You were in the area two hours early."
"The walk took less time than anticipated."
Caleum's expression indicated that he was filing this away for future reference, which was fine. Caelum was excellent at filing things for future reference and never deploying them at the wrong moment. It was one of his more valuable qualities.
She had stopped a short distance behind Caelum, watching this exchange with the particular quality of attention that Valerius had noticed about her: present in a way that didn't announce itself, absorbing information without signaling that she was doing so. When he met her eyes, she looked neither surprised nor unsurprised. She looked at him the way she had looked at the cathedral's architecture on his first evening — with the eyes of someone cataloguing useful information.
"You came," she said.
"I came to refuse in person," he said. "I told you this two days ago."
"You told me you might refuse. There's a difference."
This was not, technically, what he had said, but the distinction she was drawing was close enough to accurate that arguing it would require more investment than it was worth. He looked at Caelum, who had arranged himself on the bench at the far side of the courtyard with the studied innocuousness of a large man pretending to find the middle distance interesting.
"You've agreed to this," Valerius said to him.
"She asked me," Caelum said, with the simplicity of a man who considers this sufficient explanation. "She had good reasons."
"What reasons?"
Caelum looked at him for a moment with the expression that meant he was deciding how much of something to say. "She needed someone. She asked me specifically because she knows the two of us and she thought I was the least likely to complicate things." He paused. "She was right."
Valerius looked at Lysandra. She had moved to the center of the courtyard and was standing with her arms loosely at her sides, watching him with the directness he had by now catalogued as her default mode when she had decided the situation required honesty.
"If I do this," he said, "I have conditions."
"Name them."
"No one knows. The rehearsals are private. The Academy doesn't know I'm playing again. Caelum and Elowen don't — " He stopped, recalibrated. "They can know. But no one beyond them."
"Agreed."
"I stop when I say I stop. No debate. No negotiation. If I say I'm done for a session, the session is done."
"Agreed."
The speed of her agreement was, he found, slightly irritating. He had prepared for resistance and she was refusing to provide it, which had the disorienting effect of removing the mechanism by which he had been planning to talk himself out of this.
"You're agreeing very quickly," he said.
"Your conditions are reasonable." She tilted her head slightly. "Did you expect them not to be?"
"I expected negotiation."
"I don't negotiate conditions that exist for good reasons." She looked at him steadily. "You're being careful because you got hurt. Careful is reasonable. I don't negotiate with reasonable."
He looked at her. Something in the matter-of-fact quality of this — the complete absence of pity, the absence of any attempt to soften or frame or manage the acknowledgment that he had been hurt — was disorienting in a way that he found difficult to characterize. Most people who were aware of his situation operated from a position of careful consideration — managing their words, their expressions, their distance. She was doing none of this. She was simply stating what was true and treating it as information rather than wound.
"One more," he said. "What you're building — the performance. I want to know what it is. What we'd be doing."
She was quiet for a moment. It was a different quality of quiet from the strategic pauses he had already catalogued — this one had the texture of genuine consideration.
"I have a dance," she said, at last. "An old one. It comes from — it comes from the tradition I trained in, before I came to Oakhaven. It requires a Cadence instrument to be fully realized. Without the instrument, it's incomplete." She looked at him. "With the right one, it becomes something no one here has ever seen."
He heard the incompleteness in this description. He heard the things that were not being said around it — the careful structure of disclosure, the edges of something larger than a Festival performance. He filed this in the location for things he was not addressing, because he was already agreeing, which was the relevant fact, and extracting the full truth from her was a separate project.
"All right," he said.
Caleum stood up from the bench at the courtyard's edge, with the air of someone who has been waiting to be dismissed. "I should continue my patrol," he said, with a straightforwardness that was so complete it had to be deliberate. "I'll leave you two to the — to the professional arrangements."
He nodded at Valerius. Then, to Lysandra, with a particular inflection: "I'll see you Friday."
"Friday," she confirmed, returning it with the ease of someone who has practiced an exchange.
Caleum left. His footsteps receded through the gate and down the outer path, and the courtyard settled back into the particular silence of a space that belongs, now, to two people.
Valerius looked at the moon-laurel tree. She looked at him. The afternoon light came through the canopy at the low angle of Frostmonth, the silver blossoms filtering it into fragments that moved across the courtyard floor with the wind.
"Where do you want to start?" he asked.
"From the beginning," she said. "I'll show you the first movement. Just watch — don't play yet. Watch and let it come into your hands the way it does. Then play what you find there."
She moved to the center of the courtyard, to the space beneath the lowest branch of the moon-laurel tree, and she set her feet and she began.
The first movement of whatever she was dancing was slow — slower than anything he had seen her do in the previous sessions, the kind of tempo that requires more control than speed because it gives the body nowhere to hide. Each position was held for a breath, two breaths, long enough to become architecture before it resolved into the next thing. He watched her arms trace shapes he didn't have language for — not the vocabulary of the dance forms he knew, not Academic style or folk tradition or any of the other categories his training had furnished him with. This was older than categories. It moved the way something moves when it is expressing rather than demonstrating.
He became aware of his hands.
They were in position — left hand curved around the strings, right hand with the bow raised — without having moved consciously into that arrangement. The Aetheris was under his chin. He had not done this on purpose.
He played.
The first phrase was halting. The second was better. By the third he had found something — a thread of melody that was not composed but heard, drawn out of the movement in front of him the way a form is drawn out of material that already contains it. The Aetheris warmed under his hands in a way that was different from the previous evenings — less cautious, more willing, as if the instrument had made some incremental decision about trust.
The magic, when it appeared, was thin and uneven, shot through with the interruptions of his uncertainty. But it was there: a shimmer in the cold air between them, a slight brightening of the moon-laurel blossoms above, a quality of charged attention that the cathedral's resonant stone carried and amplified in a way that made the small working feel larger than it was.
She stopped.
He did not stop immediately — the bow continued for one more phrase before he registered that she had finished, and then he lowered it, slowly, and stood in the silence with the Aetheris still under his chin.
She was looking at him.
Not with the cataloguing attention of the assessments she had made before. With something more personal than that — the expression of someone who has seen something they were hoping to see and are taking a moment to receive it properly.
"That," she said, at last. "That's what I need."
He looked at his right hand. The bow was still in it. The hand was not shaking. Four months ago he had not believed this was a thing that would ever again be true.
"What time on Monday?" he said.
The small lift at the corner of her mouth was not a triumphant smile. It was something quieter than that — the expression, he thought, of someone who is genuinely relieved, which was not quite what he had expected.
"The fifth hour," she said. "Before the city wakes up."
He put the Aetheris away. He closed the case. He stood in the courtyard with the silver blossoms above him and the last of the afternoon light coming through the canopy, and he did not examine what had just happened with any of the analytical tools he had available, because examining it would require admitting that it had happened, and he was not ready for that yet.
"Monday," he confirmed.
He walked home through a city that was still more color than grey.
