Sunday evenings at the Malhotra residence had their own established grammar.
Arjun had grown up inside it and had long since stopped needing to think about its requirements — the particular chair his grandmother preferred, the order in which dishes arrived at the table, the specific topics that were suitable for the main meal versus those reserved for the quieter hour afterward. He moved through it with the fluency of long practice, which left a portion of his attention available for other things.
Tonight, other things were plentiful.
He sat at the dinner table and answered questions about the Singapore acquisition and agreed that his cousin's new apartment was well situated and accepted a second helping of the dal his grandmother had been making since before he was born, and one part of his mind was doing all of this correctly while another part was sitting in an amber-lit elevator at floor twenty-two with the rain audible through the walls.
He had been returning to that elevator with some frequency since Wednesday.
His mother was watching him.
This was not unusual — Savita Malhotra watched everything, with the attention of someone who had spent decades treating observation as a professional skill. What was unusual was the specific quality of tonight's attention: focused, patient, the look of someone who had decided that a conversation was going to happen and was simply waiting for the correct moment to begin it.
Arjun ate his dinner and waited for the moment to arrive.
---
It arrived after his grandmother had gone to bed and his brother had left to meet friends and the drawing room had settled into the particular quiet of a family home after its obligations had been discharged.
His mother poured the tea herself — she always did, when the staff had been dismissed for the evening, and there was something in the gesture that Arjun had always associated with conversations she considered important enough to have without witnesses.
She sat down across from him.
Set the cups between them.
"Celestia is progressing well," she said.
It was not a question. It was an opening, the first step in the approach pattern he had learned to recognise before he was old enough to fully understand what it meant.
"On schedule," he said. "Phase four begins next week."
She nodded. Lifted her cup. The drawing room was warm and lit and smelled of the jasmine his grandmother kept in the corner, and it was entirely possible, in this moment, to believe the conversation was about the project.
"Ms. Sharma is doing good work," his mother said.
Again not a question. A statement offered with the specific neutrality of someone who had formed an opinion and was presenting it as a fact.
"She is," Arjun said.
His mother looked at her tea.
He set his cup down and waited.
---
"I understand she has a young child," his mother said. "Raising it alone."
The words arrived in the warm, mildly concerned tone of someone noting a difficult circumstance — the register of social sympathy, entirely unremarkable on the surface.
Arjun looked at his mother.
Not at what she was saying. At how she was saying it. At the specific, unhurried precision of *I understand she has a young child* — not *I heard* or *someone mentioned* but *I understand*, the phrasing of someone who has moved past the stage of rumour into the stage of confirmed information.
She knew.
Not suspected — knew. The sentence had been constructed by someone who had verified what they were saying before saying it.
"She manages it well," Arjun said. His voice was even. He was paying very close attention to keeping it even.
"I'm sure she does." His mother's tone remained warm, the concern of a woman who found hardship affecting wherever she encountered it. "It's a great deal for one person."
She left this observation in the air between them for a moment.
Arjun left it there with her.
---
Then she set down her cup.
She looked at him directly — the shift from the considered gaze she had maintained all evening to the full, clear attention she deployed when she had arrived at the thing she had come to say.
"Arjun. Sia Kapoor is a good woman. Her family and ours have a long history. This match has been thought through carefully, by people who considered it from all sides."
He said nothing.
"Don't allow things that don't belong to you," she said, "to complicate what has been carefully arranged."
The words were measured and quiet and delivered with the specific gentleness of someone who believed they were being kind.
"Things that don't belong to me," Arjun said. Flat. Precise. The echo of someone who has heard a phrase and is turning it over to examine its underside. "What things are you referring to, exactly?"
His mother held his gaze without flinching. This was one of her most consistent qualities — she did not look away from difficult conversations. She met them directly, which had always made her both formidable and, in its way, honest.
"You are the CEO of a significant company," she said. "You have obligations — to this family, to the people who depend on what you've built, to a future that was planned long before recent complications arose. Your decisions are not only your own."
A pause.
When she continued, her voice had modulated into something that carried, underneath the warmth, the particular weight of a final statement.
"Some stories end for good reasons, Arjun. Don't attempt to rewrite what was correctly concluded."
Arjun looked at his mother.
He had grown up with her. He knew the way she moved through rooms, the way she ran a household, the way she managed relationships with the same precision she brought to everything she considered important. He knew her well enough to understand that *correctly concluded* was not a casual phrase. It was not the way you described something that had simply run its course.
*Correctly concluded* described an outcome that had been intended. Managed. Arrived at through deliberate means.
He sat with this for a moment.
"Good night, Maa," he said.
He said it without inflection. He kissed her forehead, as he always did, and he left the drawing room, and he drove home through the Sunday night city with the specific quality of attention of someone who is reprocessing a large amount of information through a new framework.
---
He sat in the car outside his building for fifteen minutes after he arrived.
The city around him was doing what cities did on Sunday nights — winding down, not yet quiet, the particular texture of an evening not quite finished. He was not listening to it. He was sitting with *correctly concluded* and everything it implied.
His mother knew Nisha had a child.
She had not said how she knew. She had not said when she had found out, or from whom, or what she had done with the information. She had simply deployed it — casually, in passing, as though it were public knowledge rather than something she had gone to the trouble of confirming.
Which meant she had gone to the trouble.
Which meant she had been watching. Gathering. Knowing things she had not shared.
And then: *correctly concluded.* A story that had ended for good reasons. Don't rewrite what was concluded *correctly.*
The word that kept returning to him was not *concluded.* It was *correctly.* The adverb of intention. The word that separated an ending that happened from an ending that was made to happen.
He went upstairs.
---
He did not open his work files.
He opened, instead, the archived folder he had not accessed in over two years — the correspondence from that period, filed and sealed in the way he filed things he had decided to be finished with. He had not looked at it since the month it had been created. He had considered looking at it a handful of times and had decided, each time, that the looking served no productive purpose.
Tonight, the framework had changed.
He read through the correspondence slowly. The emails from that period, the documents, the sequence of communications that had formed the record of how things had ended.
He had read them at the time. He had processed them at the time, with the specific and brutal efficiency of someone who had decided that efficiency was the only survivable approach to what was in front of him.
But he had read them then as a man who believed a particular story. Who had accepted the conclusion and was simply documenting the evidence of it.
He was reading them now as a man who had spent the past several weeks assembling a different set of questions.
He found the first inconsistency at eleven twenty-three.
An email from his own address. Sent at two forty-seven in the afternoon on a Thursday. He knew that Thursday — he had been on a flight from Singapore, an eight-hour journey with no connectivity, a trip he had taken alone and documented extensively because the Singapore acquisition had been the most significant deal of that year.
The flight had departed at one-fifteen. He had been airborne at two forty-seven.
The email from his address had been sent at two forty-seven.
He stared at the timestamp.
He pulled up the flight record — he kept them all, a habit of the thorough — and confirmed what he already knew. Departure at one-fifteen. Arrival at nine-forty the following morning. No in-flight connectivity available on that aircraft, a fact he remembered clearly because he had specifically asked and been told before boarding.
An email from his address, sent while he was on a plane with no internet access.
He found the second inconsistency at eleven fifty-one.
A document bearing his digital signature. Dated a Wednesday. He checked his calendar for that Wednesday — a full day on-site at the Chandigarh property, no access to his laptop, the day he had famously left his phone in the car for six hours and caused Vikram considerable distress.
A document signed with his digital credentials on a day when he had not had his laptop.
He sat back.
He looked at the ceiling of his apartment — the clean, bare ceiling of a space that had been designed to contain nothing that was not intentional.
Two inconsistencies. Small. The kind that could be dismissed individually as technical errors, time zone confusions, synchronisation issues.
Except that he had been looking at them for two and a half years without looking for them, and they had been there the entire time, and now that he was looking for them he had found two in under an hour.
He thought about *correctly concluded.*
He thought about a woman who had known, before he did, that his lead designer had a child.
He thought about twenty-seven months, and a child who liked yellow, and a name said quietly into a phone in a construction corridor.
He did not reach a conclusion.
He was not yet ready to reach a conclusion, because the conclusion was too large and the evidence was still incomplete and he was a man who had been wrong about certainty before and had paid considerably for it.
But he sat at his desk until the city outside his window had gone fully quiet and then partially loud again with the sounds of early morning, and he looked at two timestamps that did not add up, and he thought about what it meant that they did not add up.
And what it meant that no one had ever asked him to explain them.
