Nisha arrived seven minutes early.
This was deliberate. She had learned, over the past week, that the conference rooms on the twenty-eighth floor had a particular quality in the minutes before a meeting — a stillness that belonged entirely to whoever arrived first, a brief window in which the space was neutral and unclaimed. She had learned to use that window. To spread her materials across the table in a way that established, quietly and without drama, that she was someone who had prepared and was not waiting to be told what to think.
She laid out the revised structural drawings, the three comparative simulations she had completed over the weekend, and the updated timeline phasing document. She positioned her pencil parallel to the edge of the nearest drawing. She poured herself water from the carafe on the side table.
Then she sat down, looked at her work spread across the surface, and told herself for the fourth time that morning that this was a technical consultation. Engineering. Load-bearing calculations and phasing logistics and the precise, solvable problem of how to suspend a botanical installation from a ceiling that had opinions about weight distribution.
It was a meeting about a ceiling.
She was completely fine.
The door opened at exactly nine o'clock.
Arjun came in, and behind him — which Nisha had not anticipated, and which she would later identify as the reason she managed the first twenty minutes as well as she did — came Suresh Nair, the Group's chief structural engineer, a compact and energetic man in his late forties who immediately began talking about load coefficients before he had fully taken his seat.
Arjun sat down across from her. Not beside her. The width of the table between them, which was a standard conference table width and therefore a perfectly reasonable distance and not something she needed to have an opinion about.
"Ms. Sharma," he said.
"Mr. Malhotra," she said.
Suresh looked between them briefly, apparently noticed nothing of interest, and returned to his notes.
They began.
---
The first twenty minutes were, by any objective measure, a good meeting.
This was the part Nisha had not fully prepared for. She had prepared for the distance, for the careful professional register, for the management of her own reactions to both of those things. She had not prepared for the possibility that working with him would be — in the specific, limited context of a technical problem they both cared about — genuinely easy.
Not easy in the sense of comfortable. Easy in the sense of efficient. In the sense of two people who read the same kind of drawing the same way, who moved through the logic of a structural problem at the same pace, who didn't need to translate for each other.
Suresh walked them through the simulation results for the first two alternative configurations. Nisha had questions. Arjun had different questions. At some point she realized their questions were triangulating the same concern from different angles — she was approaching it from the aesthetic implication, he from the construction risk — and the combination was, objectively, more rigorous than either would have been alone.
She noticed this the way you notice a small, inconvenient fact: briefly, precisely, and with the immediate intention of not thinking about it further.
Suresh moved to the third configuration.
Nisha leaned forward to follow a particular load path on the drawing, tracing it with one finger — the habit she had when working through something complex, the physical engagement with the problem that helped her think. She had forgotten, for approximately twenty minutes, to monitor whether this habit was visible.
She looked up and found Arjun watching her hand on the drawing.
He looked away immediately. Back to Suresh. His expression unchanged.
Nisha looked back at the drawing and said something technically accurate about the third configuration that she was reasonably confident she actually meant.
---
The disagreement came at the forty-minute mark, as disagreements in good meetings often do — after enough progress has been made that both parties have something worth defending.
Suresh had proposed a modification to the primary connection point on the north atrium wall. Structurally, it was the conservative choice — simpler to execute, lower risk of complication during installation. Arjun had nodded at it. Nisha had looked at it for a long moment.
"If we move the connection point there," she said, "we lose the sightline from the mezzanine level."
Suresh looked at his drawing. "The structural integrity —"
"Is achievable from the original position," Nisha said. "I had Suresh's team run the numbers on that specifically. It's in the supplementary report, page seven."
Arjun picked up the supplementary report.
Suresh looked slightly surprised to learn that page seven existed.
"The margin is tighter," Arjun said, reading.
"The margin is sufficient," Nisha said. "And the sightline from the mezzanine is the visual anchor of the entire atrium experience. Remove it and you have a lobby. Keep it and you have a destination."
Arjun looked up from the report.
Across the table, they held the disagreement in the air between them — not hostile, not heated, but genuine. Two people who both knew what they were talking about and had arrived at different conclusions and were not inclined to pretend otherwise.
"The tighter margin increases installation complexity," he said.
"Which is why I've proposed a modified installation sequence on page twelve," she said. "It accounts for that."
A pause.
Suresh, with the expression of a man who had attended many meetings between architects and clients and had learned to wait them out, made a note.
Arjun looked back down at the report. Turned to page twelve.
Nisha watched him read it. She had written that page at eleven-thirty on Tuesday night, after Aanya was asleep, sitting on her kitchen floor with her back against the cabinet because that was where she always ended up when she was working on something difficult. She had rewritten the installation sequence four times. She knew it was right.
He read it in silence. Set the report down.
"We'll proceed with the original connection point," he said.
Nisha kept her expression neutral and felt, in the quiet center of herself, the specific satisfaction of having done the work well enough that there was no reasonable alternative to this outcome.
"Thank you," she said.
Suresh uncapped his pen and began making revisions to his drawing.
And that was the moment — with Suresh's head bent over his notes and both of them leaning forward to review the change on the master drawing — that Nisha became aware of the distance.
Or rather, the absence of it.
At some point during the exchange over the connection point, they had both moved forward across the table to reference the same section of the drawing, and the width of a standard conference table was not, it turned out, as absolute a distance as she had been treating it. He was close enough that she was aware of him the way you are aware of a source of warmth in a cold room — not touching, not even near touching, but present in a way that registered before thought.
Arjun went still.
Not obviously — Suresh would not have noticed. But she noticed, because she was paying attention to exactly the things she had told herself she would not pay attention to, and she felt the moment he became aware of it too. The slight adjustment in his breathing. The way his attention, which had been entirely on the drawing, became divided.
He didn't move back.
Neither did she.
For approximately four seconds — which was long enough to be a choice and short enough to be denied as one — neither of them moved.
Then Suresh said something about the revised load calculation and the moment ended and they were both looking at the drawing again and Nisha was explaining something about the installation bracket specification in a voice that was, she was fairly certain, the correct volume and register.
She did not look at him directly for the remaining eight minutes of the meeting.
---
Suresh left first, with his revised drawings and the satisfied energy of an engineer who had solved something. He shook Nisha's hand and told her the supplementary report was thorough work, and she thanked him, and he left, and the door closed behind him.
Nisha began gathering her materials.
Arjun did not leave.
He stood beside the table — not sitting, not moving toward the door — with the particular quality of stillness that she was beginning to recognize as his version of working something out. She gathered her drawings into their tube. Closed her laptop. Picked up her pencil.
He said: "I want to amend the contract."
She looked up.
"The current structure routes all creative review through the project director and the development team," he said. "For a project of this scale, that introduces unnecessary lag. I want weekly direct review sessions — creative direction, milestone approvals, any significant design decisions. Every Wednesday. Direct." A pause. "Between you and me."
Nisha looked at him.
He looked back at her with the expression of someone describing a perfectly standard contractual arrangement, which it was not, and which he knew it was not, and which she knew he knew.
She thought about the four seconds over the drawing. She thought about twenty minutes of working together with the easy efficiency of people who had once known each other's rhythms. She thought about every Wednesday for the next several months, in a room, without a structural engineer as a buffer.
She thought about Aanya, asleep at home right now while her grandmother watched her, and the school fees, and the crack in the bathroom ceiling, and the two years of careful reconstruction that this contract represented the foundation of.
She thought: I know exactly what this is.
"Alright," she said.
Something shifted in his expression — too brief to name.
"Vikram will send the amendment today," he said.
He picked up his file and walked out, and Nisha stood in the empty conference room with her drawing tube under her arm and the full, clear understanding that she had just agreed to walk into the same room as Arjun Malhotra every Wednesday for the foreseeable future, alone, by choice, with complete awareness of what she was doing.
She had told herself, getting dressed that morning, that she was a different person than she had been two years ago. Harder where she needed to be.
Harder, she thought now, was apparently not the same as immune.
---
She called Priya from the car.
Priya answered on the second ring with the attentiveness of someone who had been waiting.
"How was it?"
"Fine," Nisha said. "The technical session was productive. Suresh is good."
"And?"
Nisha looked at the city moving past the window. A fruit seller at the corner. A school bus. Ordinary things, continuing.
"He amended the contract," she said. "Weekly direct review sessions. Every Wednesday. Just the two of us."
Silence.
Then: "Nisha."
"I know."
"What did you say?"
"I said yes."
The silence this time was longer and more expressive.
"I know," Nisha said again, before Priya could find words for whatever she was building toward. "I know what it is. I know what I'm doing."
"Do you?"
She thought about the question honestly. Outside, the fruit seller made change for a customer. The school bus turned a corner and disappeared.
"I know what I'm walking into," she said finally. "That's not the same thing, but it's what I have."
Priya exhaled. It was the exhale of a best friend who had been through enough of someone's history to know when argument was useful and when it wasn't. "Okay," she said. "Okay. Call me after next Wednesday."
"I will."
"And Nisha —" A pause. "Be careful with yourself. Not with the project. With yourself."
Nisha said she would and ended the call.
The car moved through the afternoon traffic. In forty minutes she would pick up Aanya from her mother's house. There would be the car ride home during which Aanya would narrate, in her limited but enthusiastic vocabulary, the events of the day. There would be dinner and bath and the second story that was always demanded and always given. There would be the particular peace of a small person asleep in the next room, which was the most reliable thing in Nisha's life and the thing she had built everything else around.
All of that was true and real and waiting for her.
Also true: next Wednesday, she would walk into a conference room on the twenty-eighth floor and sit across a table from Arjun Malhotra, alone, for the first of however many Wednesdays this contract required.
She looked out the window at the city.
She had told Priya she knew what she was walking into.
What she had not said, because she was not sure she was ready to say it even to Priya, was that knowing had not made her say no.
And she wasn't entirely sure what to do with that.
