At seven in the morning on Monday, the thirty-second floor of the Apex Media building was already lit up, even though the official workday didn't start until nine. Chloe Carter sat in her small corner office in the Strategic Communications wing, two monitors open side by side — one showing a draft press statement, the other a live news feed about a cosmetics brand partnered with Apex that had just been accused of misleading advertising.
She typed with the speed of someone used to putting out fires before breakfast. Three years as a crisis communications specialist at Apex Media had taught Chloe one thing: there was no scandal that couldn't be managed, only people who reacted too slowly or too honestly.
She always chose the response that was just enough. Just clever enough that the company wouldn't be hurt. Just polished enough that no one could see what she actually thought.
On the left monitor, a red line from Legal blinked: "Response required before 9:00 AM — risk of being flagged for misleading advertising across three major platforms." Chloe rolled her wrist, cracking her knuckles gently, a habit she had whenever she was about to shift into full working mode. She typed out three different response options — one that admitted a minor fault and promised to correct it, one that diluted the issue by emphasizing the brand's other positive campaigns, and one that stayed carefully silent, responding only if press asked directly.
From experience, she knew the first option was the most ethically sound, but the third was what the board and Legal would choose. That was always the most exhausting part of her job — not solving the crisis itself, but accepting that the "right" way rarely got picked. She'd learned, over the years, that the truth rarely won in a boardroom, no matter how carefully it was worded, and that lesson had cost her more than she liked to admit.
"Chloe, have you seen this?"
Mai, the intern who'd started three months ago, poked her head over the partition, her voice breathless with excitement.
"Seen what?" Chloe didn't look up from the screen.
"The new CEO. Mr. Vance. I heard he's officially at the office today!"
Chloe's fingers froze on the keyboard for exactly half a second before she kept typing.
"Yeah, I heard."
The rumor had been circulating around the company for a week: Ethan Vance, the eldest grandson of the founding Vance family, the man who had spent six years running the London branch and turned it from a satellite office into the group's most profitable division, was finally back in New York to formally take over as CEO.
People talked about him with a strange mix of admiration and fear. "Brilliant, but cold as ice." "Never smiles in meetings." "Fired someone once just for turning in a report fifteen minutes late." "I heard he checks employee emails at three in the morning to see who's still working." Chloe had no idea how much of that was true and how much was embellishment from people who liked to paint new bosses as monsters for the sake of a good break-room story. But she'd learned that where there was smoke, someone was usually lighting matches.
She had met too many people like that in her life — people who wrapped themselves in a shell of professionalism and control to hide how easily they'd crush anyone who stood in their way. Adrian, her boss at her previous company, had also been described as "strict but fair" — right up until he used her own honest emails to construct a story that got her fired, and took with it her belief that telling the truth was ever worth the risk. She still remembered sitting in that final meeting, listening to someone read her own words back to her, twisted into evidence of "attitude issues incompatible with company culture."
That was when Chloe learned to perform. Play whatever role people wanted to see. And keep the real part of herself — the sharp, blunt, sometimes ruthlessly honest part — for the one place no one knew was her: the pages she wrote as Viper. Sometimes, late at night, she wondered if the version of herself she showed the office was the fake one, or if Viper was — and whether there was any way to be both at once without one of them getting crushed.
"Do you think he's really like the rumors?" Mai wasn't giving up, perching on the edge of Chloe's desk.
"I think," Chloe said, finally looking up, offering the polished office smile she'd trained into reflex, "whatever he turns out to be, your job and mine is still to do our work well. Bosses come and go. Now help me finish this response timeline for the cosmetics thing — I need to hand it to my old manager by nine."
Chloe glanced at the clock, then back at Mai, who was still lingering by the desk clearly hoping for more gossip. "Don't you have onboarding paperwork to finish?" Chloe asked, arching an eyebrow.
"It can wait five more minutes," Mai said. "This is way more interesting than tax forms."
"Everything is more interesting than tax forms," Chloe said dryly, "that's not exactly a high bar." But she softened it with a small smile, because she remembered being new here too, remembered how every rumor about the people at the top had felt like essential survival information back then. In a way, it still was.
Mai stuck out her tongue and scurried off. Chloe went back to her screen, but her mind had drifted for a few seconds — long enough to notice she was curious about a man she'd never met, and to hate that feeling. She pushed the thought aside, finished the email, and sent it at exactly 8:58.
---
Thirty minutes later, on the fortieth floor, in the private boardroom, Ethan Vance sat at the head of the long table, hands clasped together, eyes fixed on the elder man speaking — Uncle Harold, who had held the chairman's seat for twelve years and had a habit of stretching out his sentences as if time itself didn't apply to him.
"I understand Apex's financial position has never been stronger, thanks to what you accomplished in London," Harold said, "but the board needs more than numbers. We need an image. A stable CEO, with a foundation — not, frankly, a thirty-four-year-old bachelor living alone in a glass-and-steel apartment."
Ethan's expression didn't change. This wasn't the first time he'd heard this. Since his father was alive, the Vance family had always treated marriage as a kind of collateral asset — something to reassure shareholders, to prove "maturity," to close off any doubts about the character of whoever sat at the top. It was, he thought grimly, the family motto in everything but name: appearances first, substance later, love somewhere further down the list than either. He still remembered his parents' marriage — an arrangement between two families, cold enough that even in family photographs, the distance between them was always exactly one arm's length, never more, never less. He'd grown up believing that love, if it existed at all, was just a minor variable in a much larger equation about power and assets.
"I've taken Apex past its revenue targets four quarters running," Ethan said, his voice even but with an edge like a razor. "I'd think that's convincing enough proof of stability."
"Numbers convince investors, Ethan. They don't convince the press." Harold tapped his fingers on the table. "And you know better than anyone that press coverage is exactly what determines who holds the family's voting shares at the year-end shareholder meeting. If the board doesn't see you with a stable personal foundation, those votes could shift to another branch."
Ethan knew precisely what "another branch" meant. Marcus — his cousin, son of Uncle Gerald, who'd been cut out of the line of succession fifteen years ago in an internal power struggle whose bitterness still lingered — was waiting for any crack to slip through. Ethan had never fully trusted the excessive friendliness Marcus displayed whenever the two of them crossed paths at family events.
Harold's assistant slid a folder across the table — a shortlist, Ethan realized with distaste, of "suitable candidates" from families the board considered appropriately connected. He didn't open it. He simply left it exactly where it had been placed, a silent answer that made Harold's mouth tighten but that no one in the room dared challenge aloud.
"I'll handle it my own way," Ethan said, standing, ending the meeting with the same decisiveness that had made him famous in London. "Now, if there's nothing else, I need to go down and take over the office formally."
Walking out of the boardroom, he loosened his tie by exactly half a centimeter — the only sign that the conversation had left him more drained than any business negotiation he'd ever handled in London. In London, he'd only had to deal with partners, with markets, with numbers that could be controlled through logic. Here, he had to deal with his own family — the one thing in his life he had never learned to fully control.
The marriage matter, he pushed to the back of his mind. The first and most important task was to gain real control over the company — its people, its processes, and the blind spots that no financial report ever fully captured. He'd deal with the board later. Right now, he needed to head down to the thirty-second floor, where he'd asked his assistant to arrange a short round of meetings with key department heads.
---
The elevator opened onto the main lobby of the thirty-second floor just as Chloe was crossing it, arms full of documents, her mind still turning over how to phrase the line "we are committed to transparency" so it didn't sound fake for the hundredth time that month.
She looked up right as the doors parted.
The man who stepped out was taller than she'd expected from the company photos, his shoulders broad beneath a charcoal-gray suit tailored so perfectly it looked custom-made to the centimeter — because it was. He didn't look at anyone, didn't smile at anyone, walking with a steady rhythm that made the entire hallway part automatically, like the Red Sea before Moses.
There was only one moment — no longer than a second — when his eyes swept past Chloe.
It wasn't a long look, nothing remarkable enough to recount later. But something in the way his stride hitched for exactly a fraction of a second, as if some anomalous data point had just been registered and flagged for later processing, made a chill run down Chloe's spine.
She looked at him just long enough to register: a jaw clenched tight, eyes sharp as though calculating who in this hallway had value and who didn't, a walk that belonged to someone who had never once had to wonder whether he was being respected. His black leather shoes were polished without a single speck of dust, his tie perfectly straight without a single wrinkle — exactly as the rumors about his "extreme cleanliness" from that morning had described.
Exactly the type she'd feared. Controlling. Cold. Rigid to the point of suffocating.
"Oh my god, that's really him," Mai whispered beside her, nearly breathless, gripping Chloe's arm. "Did you see that? He didn't even glance at anyone."
"I saw," Chloe said, keeping her voice deliberately flat, turning to walk back toward her office, feeling as though she'd just slipped out of the scanning range of something dangerous.
She had no way of knowing that behind her, Ethan Vance had spent exactly three seconds continuing down the hallway wondering why the gaze of the woman carrying that stack of documents had made him feel, for just a moment, read — something no one at this company, not even the board, had managed to do to him in a single glance. It hadn't been a look of admiration or nervousness like the other employees he'd just walked past. It had been the look of someone quietly assessing him, and, it seemed, not entirely satisfied with what she'd found.
He pushed the thought aside. There were far more important things waiting.
---
That evening, once her small one-bedroom apartment in Queens had gone quiet, Chloe sat down at her personal laptop, logged into her familiar anonymous account, and opened the document she'd written sixty-two chapters into.
This was the one place Chloe never had to perform.
On that screen, under the pen name Viper, she was someone who dared to write plainly about the things no one dared say in an office: about bosses who treated employees as disposable assets, about the cold kind of power that hid behind a veneer of "professionalism," about the way a big company could grind a person down and call it "high-performance culture." Tens of thousands of readers followed her novel every week, leaving comments like "my boss is literally Adrian Cross" or "reading this feels like therapy." None of them knew that Viper was the same woman who spent her days drafting press statements about "transparency" and "sincerity" at Apex Media.
She typed out new lines for chapter sixty-three, where the novel's main antagonist — a CEO named Adrian Cross, cold, obsessively controlling, afflicted with an almost pathological need for order — was preparing a new scheme to bring down the heroine.
Chloe had never thought this character was based on anyone in particular. He was a composite of every terrible boss she'd ever had, every fear she'd ever carried. But tonight, for some reason, as she typed the line "he walked down the hallway as though the entire building existed solely to accommodate his presence," she found herself thinking of the man in the charcoal suit from that morning — the spotless shoes, the clenched jaw, the eyes that had hitched for exactly one impossibly small fraction of a second.
She shook her head, pushing the thought away, mildly annoyed with herself, and kept typing. It was just a coincidence. She hadn't even spoken a single word to Ethan Vance. There was no way one glance in a hallway could influence a character she'd spent two years building, one rooted in her own very real wounds.
She closed the laptop close to midnight, feeling the particular lightness that only writing ever gave her — the feeling of being fully herself, even if only in the dark, even if only alone. Before turning off the light, she glanced at her phone and saw a message from her literary agent, still negotiating translation rights for the book with a few small overseas publishers. Nothing urgent. She set the phone down and drifted off to sleep.
She thought about texting her best friend, Priya, to complain about the whole thing — the gala, the rumors, the strange unshakeable image of a stranger's clenched jaw — but decided against it. Priya would ask too many questions Chloe didn't have good answers for yet, questions like why she cared what the new CEO looked like at all, when by every account he was exactly the kind of man she'd spent her whole career learning to be wary of.
---
The next morning, an internal announcement went out to all Apex Media employees at exactly nine o'clock:
*Dear all,*
*To celebrate the official return of our new Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ethan Vance, and to strengthen Apex Media's image with the press, the company will host its Annual Media Gala at The Crestwood Hotel in Manhattan this Friday.*
*The Strategic Communications team will be responsible for the entire event and all press relations on site. Attendance is mandatory for all team leads and senior specialists.*
Chloe read the email twice, feeling something heavy shift in her stomach — the feeling she always got before a major event, part professional adrenaline, part something else this time that she wasn't ready to name.
This Friday, she would be standing at the same event, in the same room, as Ethan Vance — no longer separated by the distance of a hallway, by one accidental glance.
For the first time, they would actually come face to face.
She called her manager, Ms. Reyes, to confirm the task list. "Do I need to prep a short introduction speech for Mr. Vance to give to the press?" Chloe asked.
"No, the senior PR team is handling that. Your job is to make sure no reporter gets into the VIP area without being verified, and to have a response plan ready in case anyone asks anything sensitive about his personal life." Ms. Reyes paused. "I heard the board's been pushing him hard about marriage, so there's a good chance some reporter will dig right into that."
Chloe hung up, the heaviness in her stomach settling in even more clearly. She didn't know what to hope for. She only knew that her professional instinct — the one that had saved her from countless crises — was whispering that this Friday would not be as simple as a routine PR event. The gala, at least, was something she knew how to manage — a controlled environment, a script, contingencies for every possible question. It was the uncontrolled part, the part where she'd actually have to stand in the same room as him, that she didn't have a plan for yet.
On the fortieth floor, Ethan Vance was reading the same email, his fingers tapping lightly on the glass tabletop. The media gala was the perfect opportunity for him to formally cement his position in front of the press, in front of the board, in front of Marcus.
He didn't know the name of the communications specialist who would be leading the event. He didn't think he needed to.
But somewhere in his subconscious, the image of the woman with the sharp gaze who'd passed him in the hallway yesterday still lingered, refusing to fade the way other unimportant details from his first day of work already had. He called his personal assistant and asked for a detailed report on the team handling Friday's event — purely to make sure everything was tightly controlled, he told himself, for no other reason.
Friday, he thought, closing the email, turning back to the mountain of reports waiting for him. Everything would become clearer then — though even he wasn't entirely sure what "clearer" meant in this context, or why the thought made his heart beat one unnecessary beat faster.
