The morning of the interview arrived gray and overcast, which Chloe decided to take as a small mercy — easier to leave the apartment under a flat, uneventful sky than under the kind of bright morning that might have made her second-guess the growing tangle of lies currently holding her secret together.
She'd rehearsed the lie twice in the bathroom mirror before coming out, testing the exact cadence that would sound casual rather than careful, and hated, faintly, how quickly the rehearsal had come back to her — the same muscle memory she'd built over years of managing other people's crises now repurposed for managing her own deception.
"You're up early," Ethan said, already dressed for the office, coffee in hand, watching her pull on her coat with the particular attentiveness she'd learned to expect from him now, the kind that noticed things she'd rather he didn't.
"Meeting with my agent," she said, keeping her voice light, professional. "Something about a personal project. Nothing exciting."
"You've mentioned your agent before. Is this the same project?" It wasn't suspicion in his voice, just casual curiosity, the natural continuation of a conversation between two people who'd started actually talking to each other — which made the lie sitting in her mouth taste considerably worse than it would have a month ago.
"Same one, yes. Just logistics." She busied herself with her scarf, avoiding his eyes a half-second longer than felt natural. "Should be done by early afternoon."
"I'll be buried in the Marcus situation most of the day anyway," he said, and something tightened in his jaw at the mention, entirely unrelated to her, entirely his own weight to carry. "Security thinks they've found something. I'll fill you in tonight, if you're around."
"I'll be around," Chloe said, and the easy domesticity of the promise — *I'll be around, tonight, the way I always am now* — sat strangely alongside the deception she was actively engaged in, two truths that no longer fit comfortably in the same sentence.
"Do you need me to drop you anywhere? I could have the car swing by first." He said it easily, already reaching for his phone, the small unthinking generosity of someone who'd started building her into his logistics without either of them remarking on it.
"No, it's fine, I'll grab a cab. Wouldn't want to make you late for the Marcus situation." She said it lightly, grateful for the deflection, hating how easily it came.
"Marcus can wait ten minutes for me to be a decent fiance," Ethan said, and the word landed strangely between them — fiance, spoken plainly, without the ironic distance they usually wrapped around it.
"I'm fine, really," Chloe said, softer this time, and something in her tone must have convinced him, because he let it go, though not without a last, searching look that she felt land somewhere between her shoulder blades as she walked out the door.
He kissed her cheek on his way out, an unremarkable, habitual gesture that had become, somewhere in the past weeks, entirely real rather than performed, and Chloe stood alone in the kitchen for a long moment afterward, coat half-buttoned, hating the specific shape of the guilt sitting in her chest.
---
The studio in Chelsea looked exactly as unglamorous as Priya had promised — foam-paneled walls, a single overhead light, a microphone angled toward a chair that felt, once Chloe actually sat in it, considerably more intimidating than any boardroom she'd ever navigated professionally.
Priya had been waiting outside when Chloe arrived, coffee in each hand, a nervous energy about her that Chloe recognized from every previous milestone in their years working together. "You look terrified," Priya said, handing over a cup. "For the record, you don't have to be. It's your voice, but it's not going to sound like your voice. Nobody's going to hear this and think of you standing in your own kitchen."
"That's not what I'm terrified about," Chloe said, before she could stop herself.
Priya studied her for a moment, sharper than her cheerful exterior usually let on. "You want to tell me what's actually going on with you lately?"
"Later," Chloe said. "After this. I promise."
She didn't know, saying it, whether it was a promise she'd actually keep.
"You're going to sound different once we run it through the modulator," the sound engineer explained, adjusting a dial with the bored efficiency of someone who did this daily. "Pitch shifted down slightly, some texture added to disguise the natural cadence. Should be unrecognizable to anyone who knows you, even people who've heard you talk for years."
"Good," Chloe said, and meant it more than the casual tone suggested.
The interviewer, a soft-spoken woman named Renata who'd clearly done dozens of these anonymous author profiles before, walked Chloe through the easy questions first — when she started writing, why satire, what she hoped readers took away from the corporate absurdity she'd built the novel around. Chloe answered smoothly, falling into the same professional cadence she used for press briefings, the modulated version of her own voice sounding, through the headphones, disorienting and strange, like listening to a stranger say things she actually believed.
"Tell me about the antagonist," Renata said, midway through, glancing down at her notes. "Adrian Cross has become something of a phenomenon among readers — the corporate villain everyone loves to hate. Where did he come from?"
"He's a composite," Chloe said, the answer well-rehearsed, offered dozens of times to dozens of curious readers online. "Every controlling boss I've ever encountered, every story I've heard from other people about that particular flavor of corporate cruelty. Nobody specific. Everybody, a little."
"Was it a bad boss? A relationship? People always want to know," Renata added, when Chloe didn't immediately elaborate. "It's part of the appeal of a character like Adrian Cross. Readers want to believe he's real somewhere, that someone finally wrote the villain they wish they'd had the courage to write about their own life."
"A boss, mostly," Chloe said, which was true, staying carefully in the safety of the earlier, established wound rather than the newer, more complicated truth sitting just beneath it. "The kind who makes you doubt your own version of events. I wrote him to feel less alone in that experience, honestly, more than anything else."
"That's a generous thing to give readers."
"I hope so," Chloe said, and meant it, even as some part of her recognized how carefully she was steering the conversation away from the one name that actually mattered now.
"That's the official answer, I imagine." Renata smiled, not unkindly, setting her pen down. "Off the record, for just a moment — is there anyone specific? A real person who sparked it, even if the character grew well beyond them?"
The question hung in the small, foam-padded room, and Chloe felt her pulse spike in a way that had nothing to do with the modulator disguising her voice and everything to do with the sudden, vivid image of Ethan — not Adrian, never actually Adrian, but the version of him she'd feared before she'd known him, the cold stranger stepping out of an elevator weeks ago.
"There was someone, early on," Chloe said carefully, choosing each word the way she'd choose words for a press statement, aware of exactly how much weight each one carried. "Someone I was afraid of, before I actually knew them. The character started as that fear, fully formed, before I understood the difference between what someone looks like from a distance and who they actually are."
"That's a very generous answer for a villain."
"He's less of a villain to me now than he used to be," Chloe said, and heard, distantly, the specific double meaning in her own words — that she was no longer talking entirely about the character, that some part of her was quietly, carefully defending Ethan without naming him, protecting him from an accusation that existed only in the earliest drafts of a fear she no longer fully carried.
Renata studied her for a moment, perceptive enough to sense there was more beneath the answer than the words themselves offered, but professional enough not to push further. "That's a lovely place to end the interview, actually. Thank you, Viper. This has been wonderful."
Renata had thanked her warmly at the end, tucking her recorder away, mentioning offhand that the piece would likely run alongside a short excerpt from the novel itself — the chapter where Adrian Cross first appears, cold and immaculate, stepping off an elevator into a hallway full of employees who part for him without being asked. Chloe had smiled and nodded and said nothing about the fact that she could, if pressed, describe the exact real hallway that scene had been lifted from, down to the polish on the shoes.
It was, she realized with a small, cold jolt in the cab home, exactly the same hallway Ethan had walked through on his first day at Apex Media, exactly the same hallway she'd been standing in when she first saw him. She hadn't consciously chosen that detail when she wrote it, months before she'd ever met him. It had simply been true, drawn from a hundred other cold offices she'd worked in, until suddenly, retroactively, it wasn't a composite anymore. It was a photograph she hadn't realized she'd taken.
---
Across the city, in a conference room considerably less foam-padded, Ethan sat with his head of security and a laptop displaying a spreadsheet of login timestamps, watching a pattern slowly assemble itself into something he'd suspected for weeks but hadn't yet been able to prove.
"This account," the security head said, pointing to a username that meant nothing on its surface — generic, forgettable, the kind of credential that could belong to anyone. "Created six weeks ago, used exactly three times, always during the same overnight window, always accessing the same category of trajectory documents. We traced the IP address to a residential building in Tribeca."
"Marcus's building?"
"Two floors down from his unit, actually. Registered to a shell company that traces back, after some digging, to an associate of his — a business consultant he's used before for legitimate work, which gives him plausible deniability if anyone asks directly." The security head's expression was carefully neutral, the tone of someone delivering bad news professionally. "It's not a smoking gun yet. But it's considerably more than a coincidence."
Ethan sat with that for a long moment, feeling something cold and familiar settle into his chest — not surprise, exactly, more the grim satisfaction of having a suspicion finally given shape. "Keep digging. Quietly. I don't want him to know we're close until we have something that can't be explained away."
"Understood. This could take another few weeks to fully build out."
"Take the time you need," Ethan said. "I'd rather have something airtight than something fast."
"He wants a full report tomorrow morning," Ethan said, mostly to himself, closing the laptop with more force than the gesture strictly required. "Harold's already asking questions about the trajectory documents at the next board meeting. If this becomes public before I have proof, Marcus gets to spin it as an outsider attack rather than what it actually is."
"You think he'd let the company take the hit rather than be exposed?"
"I think Marcus has never once, in twenty years, prioritized the company over himself," Ethan said, flat and certain. "He'd rather Apex bleed than admit he bled it."
The security head nodded, gathering his things, leaving Ethan alone with the spreadsheet and the particular cold clarity of finally understanding, in detail, exactly how long a betrayal had been quietly unfolding under his own roof.
He thought, walking back to his office afterward, about how he wanted to tell Chloe the moment he had something concrete — not because the contract required updates, but because some part of him had started measuring the value of information by how quickly he wanted to share it with her, a habit he hadn't consciously chosen and wasn't especially inclined to examine too closely.
He caught himself, halfway through drafting a text to her about the security findings, and stopped, deleting it before sending. Some instinct, quieter and more cautious than the one urging him to share everything with her lately, told him to wait until he had something solid enough to be worth the worry it would cause her. He filed the impulse away instead, alongside every other piece of incomplete information he was learning, slowly, to hold until the picture was whole.
---
Chloe arrived home just after two, the strange, disembodied feeling of having spent an hour describing her own life to a stranger through a voice that wasn't quite hers still lingering somewhere under her ribs. She found Ethan already there, tie loosened, laptop open on the kitchen island, looking up when she came in with an expression that shifted, immediately, from focused to warm.
"Anything I can help with?" Chloe asked, setting her bag down, grateful for the shift in subject even as guilt needled at her for being grateful. "The Marcus thing. You mentioned this morning security found something."
"A shell account, traced to a building near his apartment. Not enough to move on yet, but enough to know I was right to be suspicious." Something eased slightly in his shoulders as he said it, the particular relief of finally being believed by the evidence rather than only by his own instincts. "I'll need your read on messaging if this becomes public before we're ready. Probably next week, if the investigation moves at the pace security's predicting."
"I'm here," Chloe said, and meant it fully, even as the same sentence, applied to her own unfinished confession, felt considerably less true.
"How did the meeting go?" he asked. "The personal project thing."
"Fine," Chloe said. "Productive. We're moving forward with some things."
"That's vague."
"It's a vague kind of project," she said, aiming for lightness and hearing, in her own ears, exactly how thin it sounded stretched over the truth underneath.
Something in his expression flickered — not suspicion, not yet, but the faint, attentive awareness of a man who'd learned, over the past weeks, to notice the specific texture of her evasions. He didn't push. He simply held her gaze a beat longer than the moment required, as though giving her the opportunity to say more if she wanted to, and when she didn't take it, he let it go with a small nod that felt, to Chloe, like the first quiet crack in something they'd only just finished building.
"Good," he said finally. "I'm glad it's going well, whatever it is."
"Thank you," Chloe said, and the gratitude was real even as the omission sat heavy in her chest, and she hated, with a specific, exhausted clarity, how naturally the half-truths were starting to come to her now, after weeks of learning to be honest with exactly this man.
She thought, watching him across the kitchen island, about the specific unfairness of the moment — that he'd just handed her a piece of his real vulnerability, the Marcus investigation, the family betrayal he was quietly navigating, while she'd handed him nothing back but a vague word and a half-smile. It felt, increasingly, like a debt she was accruing rather than a secret she was simply protecting, interest compounding with every evening she let pass without settling it.
---
Priya's email arrived at nine that evening, cheerful and entirely unaware of the quiet tension it was about to introduce into an apartment two miles away.
*The interview went beautifully — Renata said you were a natural, gave them exactly the mysterious-but-warm tone they wanted. Silverline's already cutting it down for release. Timeline update: the edited audio will go live alongside the film option announcement in ten days. Everything's locked now, Chloe. No more moving pieces. Just the countdown.*
Chloe read it twice, sitting on the edge of her bed with Ethan's light still visible under his study door down the hall, and felt the full weight of the number settle into her chest like something physical.
Ten days.
Ten days until a recording of her own carefully modulated voice, describing a man she was quietly, unmistakably falling for as the inspiration for her novel's villain, would exist permanently, publicly, waiting for exactly the wrong person to make exactly the wrong connection.
She closed the email and sat very still in the quiet of her room, aware, for the first time since she'd started this arrangement, that the version of herself sitting across the kitchen island from Ethan every evening and the version of herself who'd just spent an hour anonymously discussing him as a fictional villain were no longer occupying separate enough spaces to keep apart much longer. She thought about texting Priya back immediately, asking if there was any way to push the timeline further, buy herself more room to find the right moment, the right words. She knew, even as she considered it, that Priya would say what she'd already said once before — that more time wouldn't shrink the problem, only extend the waiting. She set the phone down without typing anything, and lay back against her pillows, staring at the ceiling, doing the same anxious math she'd been doing for weeks now, except the number at the center of it had gotten considerably, unmistakably smaller.
She thought, one last time before finally letting sleep pull her under, about Renata's question — *is there anyone specific* — and about how close she'd come to simply saying his name out loud, into a microphone, into a recording that would exist forever, before some instinct she hadn't fully examined had pulled her back from the edge of it. She didn't know yet whether that instinct had been protecting Ethan, or protecting herself, or whether, at this point, the two had become so tangled together that the distinction no longer meant anything at all.
