Ethan's flight landed thirty minutes early, and Chloe stood at the arrivals gate with a sign she'd made specifically for the occasion — *WELCOME HOME, MR. VANCE, YOUR FIANCEE MISSED YOU EMBARRASSINGLY MUCH* — feeling only slightly self-conscious about the display of affection given the crowd of considerably more reserved greeters surrounding her.
She'd arrived at the airport considerably earlier than strictly necessary, unable to sit still at home any longer once she'd finished the flowers and the tidying, choosing instead to wait among the crowd of other greeters, phone tracking his flight's progress with an attention that bordered on obsessive. The specific anticipation of the past two weeks had condensed, somewhere in the past hour, into a nervous, giddy energy she hadn't felt this intensely since their very first genuine date, months ago, once the fake engagement had quietly transformed into something real.
She spotted him before he spotted her, exhaustion evident in his posture despite the crisp suit he'd apparently changed into somewhere over the Atlantic, and the moment his eyes found the sign, then found her face beaming behind it, something in his entire expression transformed — relief and delight in equal measure, the specific look of a man who'd spent two weeks genuinely aching for exactly this reunion.
"You actually made a sign," he said, dropping his bag to pull her into an embrace that lifted her slightly off her feet, the sign crumpling between them without either of them particularly minding.
"I promised I'd embarrass you at arrivals. I follow through on my promises."
"I've never been more delighted by an embarrassment in my entire life," Ethan said, kissing her thoroughly enough that several nearby travelers glanced over with the particular warmth reserved for witnessing someone else's genuine happiness.
"How was the flight?" Chloe asked, once they'd finally stepped back from the embrace, her hand still gripping his lapel as though reassuring herself he was genuinely, physically present rather than another video call projection.
"Long. Exhausting. Entirely worth it, given this particular welcome." Ethan reached for the crumpled sign, smoothing it out with visible amusement. "I intend to frame this, for the record. It's possibly the single most romantic gesture anyone's ever made toward me, poster board and all."
"The bar for romantic gestures in your life has apparently been remarkably low, if a hastily made cardboard sign clears it so easily."
"You'd be surprised how low that bar actually was, before you," Ethan said, something genuine beneath the joke. "Most of my life has involved considerably more performance than genuine gesture. This felt real, precisely because it was slightly embarrassing and entirely unnecessary."
"I'll take that as high praise, then."
"The highest," he confirmed, kissing her again before finally gathering his bag to head toward the exit.
---
They were nearly to the exit, Ethan's arm wrapped securely around Chloe's shoulders, when a familiar voice called out from a nearby gate, considerably more surprised than either of them expected to hear directed their way.
"Ethan?"
Victoria stood near the check-in counter for an outbound flight, dressed for travel herself, her expression shifting rapidly through several emotions before settling into something cautiously warm.
Chloe felt her own guard rise instinctively, old habits from months of genuine threat resurfacing despite everything that had since resolved peacefully between them, before she consciously reminded herself that this particular chapter had already, quietly, closed weeks earlier when Victoria had walked away from Marcus's plans entirely.
"Victoria," Ethan said, some of his earlier lightness dimming slightly with the specific wariness their history had trained into him. "I didn't expect to see you here."
"I'm heading back to London, actually. Permanently, this time." Victoria's gaze moved briefly to Chloe, something considerably softer in it than the last time they'd been in the same room together. "I've been meaning to reach out to both of you, honestly, but I wasn't certain how welcome the gesture would be, given everything."
---
"How have you been?" Chloe asked, surprising herself with the genuine warmth of the question, watching Victoria's expression register visible relief at the absence of hostility.
"Considerably better, actually, since deciding to walk away from Marcus's plans entirely. I've spent the past several weeks doing a fair amount of reflection, similar, I imagine, to whatever Marcus has been navigating on his own end." Victoria managed a small, genuine smile. "I wanted you both to know, I saw the engagement announcement. I'm genuinely happy for you, without any of the complicated feelings I might have expected myself to have about it."
"That means considerably more than you probably realize," Ethan said, some of his wariness visibly easing. "I've wondered, more than once these past weeks, how you were doing, after everything."
"I actually reached out to Marcus, recently," Victoria added, something careful in her expression. "Not to reconcile the scheme, obviously, but simply to check in, human to human, given everything we both went through together and separately these past several months. He mentioned the therapy, the volunteering. I found myself genuinely glad to hear it, rather than skeptical the way I might have been a month ago."
"That's a meaningful gesture, reaching out like that," Ethan said.
"I think we're all trying, in our own ways, to figure out how to be better versions of ourselves after everything," Victoria said. "Marcus with his therapy, me with this move to London, presumably you two with whatever comes next in your own relationship. It feels, oddly, like all of us are finally moving in healthier directions, even if it took considerable damage to get here."
"I'm doing well, actually. Better than I expected, given how badly I nearly let old resentment steer me into something I'd have regretted permanently." Victoria glanced at her watch, aware of her own boarding time approaching. "I don't have much time, unfortunately, but I wanted to say — genuinely, without any agenda — that I'm glad this worked out the way it did. For both of you."
---
"Are you moving back to London for work?" Chloe asked, curious despite the brief window of conversation remaining.
"Partly. Mostly, I think, I needed distance from New York, from this family's particular gravity, to actually figure out who I am outside of my history with Ethan and my resentment toward Marcus's scheming." Victoria's expression turned thoughtful. "I've taken a position with a firm there, considerably less glamorous than my previous consulting work, but honestly, exactly what I think I need right now — something built on my own merits, rather than proximity to people with more power than actual substance."
"What made you decide on this particular firm, specifically?" Chloe asked, curious about the practical details of Victoria's fresh start.
"They're known for hiring people based purely on merit rather than pedigree or connections, which felt considerably important to me, given how much of my life had previously revolved around exactly the opposite dynamic." Victoria's expression carried genuine determination beneath the exhaustion of travel. "I want to build something I actually earned, this time, rather than something inherited or acquired through proximity to powerful men."
"That's an admirable goal."
"I hope I can actually follow through on it, rather than simply talking about it the way I've talked about change before without genuinely committing." Victoria managed a wry, self-aware smile. "Old habits, apparently, take considerable work to actually break."
"That sounds like a genuinely healthy decision," Ethan said.
"I'm hoping so. I've made enough unhealthy ones these past several months to want considerable change." Victoria's gaze moved to Chloe again, something more direct in it now. "For what it's worth, Chloe — I read parts of your book, eventually, out of curiosity more than anything else. It's genuinely good. I understand now why the whole situation resonated so widely, beyond simply the coincidental resemblance."
"Thank you. That means something, coming from someone who could have easily approached the whole thing with considerably more bitterness."
"For what it's worth," Chloe added, "I don't think old habits define whether someone can genuinely change. I think it's more about whether you keep choosing the harder, more honest path each time the old habit resurfaces. That's what I've been learning myself, this past year, more than anything else."
"That's a generous perspective, coming from someone I nearly exposed to considerable public humiliation not that long ago."
"I contain multitudes," Chloe said, echoing the phrase that had become something of a private touchstone over these past months. "Including, apparently, the capacity to forgive people who eventually chose better, even after choosing considerably worse initially."
Victoria's expression softened further at that, something genuinely moved beneath her composed exterior. "Thank you for that. I don't think I fully deserve it, but I'm grateful for it regardless."
---
The boarding announcement for Victoria's flight echoed through the terminal, and she gathered her bag with visible reluctance, something almost wistful crossing her expression at the interruption.
"Safe travels," Ethan added, as she gathered the last of her belongings. "And genuinely, Victoria — I hope London gives you exactly the fresh start you're looking for. You deserve the chance to build something entirely your own, away from all of this family's particular gravity."
"Thank you, Ethan. That means more than you probably realize, coming from you specifically." Victoria hesitated a moment longer, something almost fond crossing her expression. "For what it's worth, watching you with Chloe just now, in that embrace before I even called out — I think I finally understand something I couldn't see clearly when we were together. You look like a man who's actually chosen his life, rather than simply enduring whatever role it demanded of him. I'm glad you found that, even if it wasn't with me."
"Thank you for saying that," Ethan said, something quietly moved in his own expression now. "I hope you find exactly that kind of choosing too, eventually, with whoever comes next in your own story."
"I should go. But I wanted this conversation to happen, actually, before I left for good. I don't think I could have simply disappeared without saying something, given everything we've all been through together."
"I'm glad you found us," Ethan said. "Genuinely. I think this is a better ending than either of us would have predicted, a few months ago."
"Considerably better," Victoria agreed. "Take care of each other. And congratulations, again, on the wedding. I mean that entirely sincerely."
She turned toward her gate, pausing once more before disappearing into the boarding line. "Ethan — for what it's worth, I hope you find exactly the happiness with her that we never quite managed together. I mean that as a genuine wish, not as bitterness dressed up politely."
"Thank you, Victoria. I hope London brings you exactly what you're looking for too."
They watched her disappear into the boarding line, the automatic doors closing behind the last of the departing passengers, and Chloe felt something settle fully in her chest that she hadn't quite realized was still unresolved — the last lingering thread of danger from those difficult early months, finally, genuinely, tied off into something peaceful rather than threatening.
---
Chloe and Ethan walked the rest of the way to the car in comfortable, contemplative silence, the unexpected encounter settling into something considerably more peaceful than either of them might have predicted, given their history with Victoria.
Once home, Ethan collapsed gratefully onto the familiar couch, exhaustion from the long flight and the emotional weight of the airport encounter finally catching up with him fully, and Chloe curled beside him, both of them content simply to sit together in comfortable silence after two weeks of screens and time zones separating them.
They drove the rest of the way in comfortable silence, the city lights beginning to glow against the deepening evening sky, and Chloe found herself, glancing at Ethan's tired but genuinely peaceful profile beside her, grateful for exactly how far they'd both traveled — not simply the physical distance of his London trip, but the considerable emotional distance from where they'd started, months earlier, two strangers bound together by a board's transactional arrangement, now genuinely, entirely choosing each other freely.
"That felt like genuine closure," Chloe said, once they were settled in the car, Ethan's exhaustion from travel finally catching up with him despite the earlier adrenaline of their reunion.
"It did," he agreed. "I hadn't realized how much unfinished business I was still carrying about how things ended with her, until just now, having an actual, honest conversation rather than the tense confrontations we'd had these past several months."
"I keep thinking about what she said," Chloe added, once they'd pulled out of the airport parking structure, the city skyline emerging gradually ahead of them. "About choosing our lives, rather than simply enduring them. I don't think I fully understood how true that was for me too, until she said it about you."
"How do you mean?"
"I spent years enduring whatever role each situation demanded — the perfect professional at work, the anonymous author hiding behind Viper, even the fake fiancee, initially, before any of this became real. I don't think I actually chose my own life, deliberately, until I decided to tell you the truth about everything, that night on the terrace."
"That was one of the bravest things I've ever watched anyone do," Ethan said. "Choosing honesty, knowing it could cost you everything."
"It felt considerably less brave in the moment than it apparently looks in retrospect," Chloe said, laughing softly. "Mostly it just felt terrifying."
"Perhaps that's what genuine bravery actually feels like, in practice. Considerably more terrifying than the word usually implies."
"Do you think she'll actually build something good for herself, back in London?"
"I hope so. I think she genuinely wants to, this time, rather than simply reacting to whatever situation she finds herself in." Ethan reached for Chloe's hand across the console, exhaustion and relief mingling in his expression. "I'm glad that chapter's finally closed, honestly. Now I can focus entirely on the actual wedding, and the actual life we're building, without any lingering threads from before you and I actually began."
"Welcome home," Chloe said softly, squeezing his hand.
"Thank you," Ethan said, closing his eyes briefly against the exhaustion of travel, "for the sign, for meeting me at arrivals, for two weeks of video calls that made the distance considerably more bearable than it had any right to be. I love you. I'm considerably happier to be home than I have words for right now."
"I love you too," Chloe said, starting the car, driving them both back toward the penthouse and the considerably fuller, more settled life waiting for them there, every complicated thread from these past several months finally, genuinely, resolving into something whole. "I read some of your manuscript pages, you know," Ethan said, eventually, his voice drowsy with exhaustion but still warm with genuine interest. "The ones you sent Priya during my absence. She forwarded them to me, actually, without your knowledge, insisting I needed to see how much the separation had inspired."
"She did what?"
"Don't be upset with her. I think she wanted me to understand how much you were feeling, in a way that might have been harder to convey purely through our nightly calls." Ethan's hand found hers, steady despite his tiredness. "The reunion scene, particularly. I understood immediately, reading it, exactly how much you'd missed me, in considerably more vivid detail than our calls alone conveyed."
"That's simultaneously mortifying and deeply romantic, that you've read my most vulnerable writing before I was ready to share it."
"I found it entirely beautiful, for what it's worth. And considerably reassuring, given how much I missed you too, these past two weeks." Ethan pulled her closer despite his exhaustion. "I'm glad Priya shared it, honestly, mortification aside."
"I'll be having words with Priya about professional boundaries, for the record," Chloe said, laughing despite herself. "Though I suppose I can't be too upset, given how it apparently made the reunion feel even more meaningful for you."
"Considerably more meaningful," Ethan confirmed. "Though I promise to pretend appropriate surprise when you eventually decide to share those pages with me officially."
"You're terrible."
"I'm exhausted and terrible, apparently, a potent combination," Ethan said, and Chloe laughed properly now, the sound easy and unguarded in the quiet apartment, two weeks of separation finally, fully resolved into the simple, ordinary comfort of being home together again.
They stayed like that for the rest of the evening, the manuscript, the wedding planning, Marcus's continued rehabilitation, and now Victoria's genuinely peaceful departure all settling into the considerable, hard-won architecture of a life they'd built together — complicated, imperfect, but entirely, finally, their own.
With the wedding now only weeks away, Chloe found herself, curled against Ethan in the quiet evening light, genuinely and entirely unafraid of whatever still lay ahead. Every threat that had once circled them both had finally, genuinely, resolved into peace, and what remained now was simply the good, ordinary work of building a life together, one settled evening at a time.
Outside, the city continued its restless, glittering churn, entirely unaware of how much peace had finally settled within these particular walls. Chloe closed her eyes, listening to the steady rhythm of Ethan's breathing beside her, already slowing toward sleep despite the early evening hour, and thought, not for the first time, that she couldn't have written a better ending herself, even with every creative instinct she possessed — reality, this time, having considerably outpaced fiction. She let herself drift toward sleep too, finally, fully at peace. Home, love, and everything still to come, all of it finally, entirely, hers. The wedding, at last, waited only weeks away now, and neither of them could wait any longer to begin that next chapter properly. For now, though, this quiet evening together was more than enough. Fifteen chapters left in their own story, and every one of them, finally, worth telling honestly.
