The celebration dinner Chloe had promised materialized the following Saturday, gathered around the penthouse's dining table for the first time since the wedding — Mai, Priya, Reyes, and, after careful consideration, Marcus, all crowded together over a considerably ambitious meal Ethan had insisted on attempting personally, despite his still-developing culinary skills.
Chloe had spent most of the afternoon nervously overseeing preparations, despite Ethan's repeated reassurances that everyone attending had already survived considerably more chaotic evenings with them both, and by the time the first guests arrived she'd finally settled into genuine excitement rather than lingering hostess anxiety.
"You look like you're expecting a board audit, not a dinner party," Priya observed, arriving first with a bottle of wine and genuine warmth in her greeting hug. "Relax. Everyone here already loves you. Tonight's simply about enjoying that, rather than performing hospitality perfectly."
"I know, intellectually. Old habits, apparently, take considerable time to fully release."
"Understandable, given everything you've navigated these past several months. Progress, not perfection." Priya squeezed her shoulder warmly before heading toward the kitchen to help with final preparations.
"This is genuinely edible," Mai announced, sampling the main course with visible surprise. "I expected considerably more disaster, given the risotto legend I've heard referenced approximately forty times these past several months."
"I've been practicing," Ethan said, something proud in his tone despite the mild teasing. "Chloe's been an excellent teacher, patient with my numerous early failures."
"Patient is a generous word for what actually happened," Chloe said, laughing. "There was a considerable amount of smoke alarm activity during the learning process, for the record."
Reyes arrived next, considerably more relaxed outside the office environment than Chloe typically saw her, bearing an elaborate dessert she'd apparently spent the afternoon preparing herself. "I don't often cook for personal occasions, given how rarely I have personal occasions worth cooking for," Reyes admitted, setting the dessert carefully on the counter. "This felt like exactly the kind of evening worth the effort."
"Thank you for coming, and for this incredible dessert," Chloe said, genuinely touched by the gesture. "It means a great deal, having you here tonight, beyond simply our professional relationship."
"You've become considerably more than simply an employee to manage, these past several months," Reyes said, something warm in her usually brisk demeanor. "I'm genuinely fond of you, Chloe. Tonight's a privilege, watching you build this life you've clearly worked so hard for."
Marcus arrived last, considerably more nervous than his usual composed exterior typically allowed, holding a bottle of wine with visible uncertainty about the evening's reception.
"Thank you for including me," he said, once Ethan had welcomed him inside. "I wasn't entirely certain the invitation would extend beyond the wedding itself."
"We meant it genuinely," Ethan said, taking the wine with a warm smile. "Come in. Everyone's already here."
---
"How's the sequel coming along?" Priya asked, settling into the comfortable rhythm of the evening once the meal's initial course had been properly appreciated. "You mentioned Portugal gave you a breakthrough on the ending."
"It's coming along well, actually. I finished the honeymoon-inspired chapter yesterday, and I think it's some of the best writing in the entire manuscript." Chloe glanced at Ethan, something warm passing between them. "Turns out genuine happiness produces considerably better material than anxious secrecy ever did."
"I'll take your word for it, given how well the first book turned out despite the anxious secrecy involved," Priya said. "Though I'm glad this one's coming from a healthier place, honestly. You deserve that shift."
"What's the sequel actually called, in the end?" Reyes asked. "I remember 'How to Tame Your Boss' being the working title, but titles change so often during the writing process."
"It's staying, actually. I've grown attached to it, and Priya thinks the irony works well given the actual story we're telling — a woman who wrote her boss as a villain, then genuinely fell in love with him instead."
"That's a genuinely clever title, given the context," Reyes said, laughing. "Half the office is already speculating about what happens in this one, for what it's worth. Your first book created quite the devoted following."
"I've noticed. Mai forwards me screenshots regularly, purely to keep me informed of ongoing fan theories."
"Purely educational purposes," Mai confirmed solemnly, though her grin suggested considerable personal enjoyment in the exercise as well.
Mai, considerably more animated after several glasses of wine, launched into an elaborate recounting of her latest dating app disaster, complete with dramatic voice impressions that had the entire table laughing helplessly by the story's conclusion.
"And then he asked if I'd read his self-published poetry collection before agreeing to a second date," Mai finished, shaking her head with theatrical despair. "I told him I already had a favorite author in my life and needed to prioritize her upcoming sequel over amateur poetry."
"I'm flattered, though slightly concerned about the pressure that implies for the sequel's quality," Chloe said, laughing.
"No pressure. I have complete faith. Also, I definitely used you as an excuse to escape a bad date, so really I should be thanking you."
"Happy to provide unwitting dating escape services, apparently, alongside everything else."
"Speaking of the sequel," Mai interjected, "I still expect proper credit for my fictional cameo appearance. I've been telling everyone at the office about my imminent literary immortalization."
---
Marcus, considerably more relaxed than his earlier appearances at family gatherings, contributed his own updates once the conversation allowed a natural opening. "The nonprofit talk went well, actually. Better than I expected, given how nervous I was beforehand."
"Tell us more," Reyes said, genuine curiosity evident despite having met Marcus only briefly at the wedding. "What was the topic, exactly?"
"Transitioning away from inherited privilege toward something more self-directed," Marcus said, something genuinely proud in his tone now. "I talked about my own experience, honestly, including the parts I'm not particularly proud of — the resentment, the scheming, everything that led to losing my board position. The response was considerably more generous than I anticipated. Several attendees mentioned they'd navigated similar family dynamics, finding it useful to hear someone speak honestly about the actual cost of choosing resentment over genuine self-direction."
"How did it feel, actually standing up there and saying all of that publicly?" Priya asked, genuinely curious about the mechanics of Marcus's vulnerability given her own professional understanding of public disclosure.
"Terrifying, initially. About halfway through, though, something shifted. I stopped worrying about how the admission would be received and simply focused on being honest, the way Chloe taught both of us, indirectly, through everything she navigated these past several months." Marcus considered his next words carefully. "I think I finally understood, standing up there, that the shame I'd carried for so long about my own failures had been considerably heavier than the actual failures themselves. Speaking them aloud, to strangers who had no personal stake in judging me specifically, somehow made the whole thing lighter."
"That's a profound realization," Reyes observed.
"I'm still working through what it actually means, practically, going forward. But it felt like genuine progress, regardless of how much further I still have to go."
"That's remarkably brave," Chloe said, "being that honest publicly about your own failures."
"I had good teachers in honesty, recently," Marcus said, glancing at both Chloe and Ethan with genuine warmth. "I figured I should put the lesson to proper use, rather than simply absorbing it privately."
---
"How's your own writing going, beyond the sequel?" Reyes asked Chloe, genuinely curious about the broader trajectory of her career now that the initial crisis of exposure had settled into something considerably more stable.
"Priya's mentioned interest in a third book, actually, though I haven't committed to anything yet. I want to see how the sequel lands with readers first, before planning too far ahead." Chloe considered the question further. "I've also been approached about writing a piece for a women's magazine, about navigating public exposure after years of anonymous writing. I'm still deciding whether that feels like the right next step."
"I think it could be genuinely valuable," Ethan offered. "Given how many people reached out after your original statement, mentioning similar fears about being fully known. You have real insight to offer, beyond simply your own personal story."
"That's exactly what Priya said too. I suppose I'll consider it more seriously, given the apparent consensus."
"What would the piece actually cover, if you decided to write it?" Mai asked, genuinely curious about the magazine opportunity Chloe had mentioned.
"Mostly the fear of being fully known, I think. How I spent years believing honesty was a liability, based on what happened with Adrian. How learning to trust people with the whole truth — you, Priya, Ethan, eventually the entire reading public — actually turned out considerably safer than the constant performance I'd maintained before." Chloe considered the shape of the potential piece further. "I think there's real value in that message, for anyone who's spent years hiding pieces of themselves out of similar fear."
"I'd read that, genuinely," Mai said. "And not just because I'm biased toward supporting everything you write at this point."
"I appreciate the biased support regardless," Chloe said, laughing.
---
Priya raised her glass suddenly, drawing the table's attention with the particular gravity of someone about to offer a genuine toast rather than simply refilling wine. "I want to say something, actually. I've represented a lot of authors over the years, but I don't think I've ever watched someone grow the way Chloe has these past several months — not just as a writer, but as a person willing to be genuinely, completely known. I'm proud to represent her professionally, but I'm considerably prouder to call her a genuine friend."
"To Chloe," Reyes added, raising her own glass.
"To Chloe and Ethan both," Mai corrected, grinning. "Let's not forget the man who learned to cook risotto purely out of love."
The table erupted into warm laughter, glasses raised together, and Chloe felt tears gathering unexpectedly at the genuine warmth surrounding her, grateful beyond measure for exactly this accumulated community of people who'd chosen to know her fully and love her regardless.
The evening wound down slowly, the considerable warmth of genuine friendship settling comfortably over the gathered table, and Chloe found herself, watching everyone laugh together at some story Mai was recounting about office gossip, profoundly grateful for exactly this kind of ordinary, accumulated happiness.
"I want to say something, actually," Marcus said, once the laughter had settled, something suddenly serious in his tone that drew the table's attention. "I know I don't entirely deserve to be sitting here tonight, given everything I put both of you through. I want you to know how much this evening means to me — being included, genuinely, in something this ordinary and warm. I spent so many years believing family gatherings were simply performances of obligation. This feels considerably different."
"You're welcome here," Ethan said, his voice carrying genuine warmth despite the history between them. "Genuinely, Marcus. I'm proud of the progress you've made, and grateful you're here tonight."
The guests lingered considerably longer than the meal itself required, conversation drifting easily between topics — Mai's ongoing dating misadventures, Reyes's plans for an upcoming department reorganization, Priya's other clients and their various publishing triumphs and disasters, Marcus's tentative plans for the venture he hoped to eventually build independent of the family name.
"I've been looking into small business consulting," Marcus mentioned, during a lull in the broader conversation. "Something that would let me actually use whatever business acumen I genuinely possess, without relying on the Vance name to open doors I haven't earned myself."
"That sounds like exactly the right direction," Ethan said. "I'd be happy to make introductions, if it would help, though only if you'd want that kind of assistance given everything you're trying to build independently."
"I appreciate the offer. I think, for now, I'd rather try building this without relying on family connections, even helpful ones. I need to know I can actually do it on my own merits first."
"That's a healthy instinct," Chloe observed. "Building your own foundation before accepting help, rather than the reverse."
"I'm learning, slowly, which instincts are actually healthy versus which ones simply feel familiar," Marcus said, something wry in the admission. "Therapy's been remarkably clarifying on that particular distinction."
"I think this is exactly what genuine family looks like," Marcus added, once the laughter had settled, something reflective in his tone. "Not the performance my own family mistook for closeness for so many years, but this — people who actually show up, who actually mean the toasts they raise, who build something real rather than simply photographed for appearances."
"You're part of that now too, Marcus," Chloe said gently. "Whatever complicated history brought you here, you're genuinely welcome at this table, moving forward."
"Thank you," Marcus said, something visibly moved crossing his expression. "I don't take that welcome lightly, given everything."
---
Reyes, meanwhile, shared her own considerable news — a potential promotion within Apex Media's broader communications structure, one that would put her in charge of an expanded team across multiple divisions.
"That's wonderful, Reyes," Chloe said. "You've more than earned that, given everything you've managed these past several years."
"I have you partially to thank, actually," Reyes admitted. "Watching you handle everything from the eleven-second clip through the entire Marcus and Victoria situation gave me considerable material to point to, demonstrating our department's crisis management capabilities to upper leadership. You've been an unwitting case study in excellent communications work."
"I'm glad my personal chaos proved professionally useful, at least."
"Extremely useful," Reyes confirmed, raising her glass again. "To chaos that somehow produces genuinely good outcomes."
"I'll drink to that," Ethan said, and the table dissolved into another round of warm laughter, glasses raised together in the considerable, accumulated joy of genuine friendship.
Marcus lingered by the door a moment longer than the others as he prepared to leave, something he clearly wanted to say still gathering behind his expression.
"I know I still have considerable work ahead," he said finally, "before either of you owes me anything beyond this evening's cautious welcome. But I wanted you to know, this dinner tonight matters more to me than perhaps anything else I've experienced these past several months, board removal included. Thank you for giving me the chance to sit at this particular table."
"Keep showing up the way you have been," Ethan said, clasping his cousin's shoulder warmly. "That's really all any of us can ask of each other, going forward."
"I intend to," Marcus said, and left with something visibly lighter in his posture than he'd arrived with, the evening having clearly given him considerably more than simply a good meal.
Later, once the guests had departed and the apartment had settled into its familiar evening quiet, Chloe found Ethan in the kitchen, carefully wrapping the leftover pottery-displayed dessert with the same meticulous attention he brought to everything these days.
"Tonight was wonderful," she said, leaning against the counter beside him. "Exactly the kind of gathering I never thought I'd have, given how carefully I used to guard every aspect of my actual life."
"I feel the same," Ethan agreed. "I don't think I fully understood, before you, how much genuine connection I'd been missing, surrounded by people who mostly wanted access to my position rather than actual friendship."
"We've both found something considerably richer than either of us expected, starting from such an unlikely beginning."
"The best things often arrive unexpectedly," Ethan said, pulling her close. "I'm grateful every single day that this particular unlikely beginning led us exactly here."
Chloe rested against him, watching the city lights glow steadily beyond the windows, feeling the specific, accumulated peace of a life genuinely, entirely her own — friends who knew everything and loved her regardless, a husband who chose vulnerability daily, a career built on honesty rather than fear, and considerably more happiness than she'd ever dared hope to find.
They stood together a while longer in the quiet kitchen, the considerable evening's warmth still settling comfortably around them both, twenty-one more chapters of their shared life waiting patiently to unfold, exactly as honestly and genuinely as everything that had already led them here.
Chloe thought, drying the last of the dishes beside him, about how considerably her definition of a good evening had shifted these past several months — from carefully managed professional appearances to exactly this, ordinary and unguarded, surrounded by people who'd chosen to know her completely rather than simply the polished version she'd once performed for everyone's benefit.
She thought too of Marcus, walking home alone tonight after everything, carrying forward whatever small piece of belonging this evening had offered him — proof, perhaps, that genuine change really was possible, given enough honesty and enough people willing to extend cautious, hard-won trust.
"Do you think Marcus will genuinely build something for himself, without leaning on the family name?" Chloe asked, curling against Ethan on the couch once the dishes were finally finished.
"I hope so. I think the impulse is genuine, watching him tonight. Whether it actually holds, long-term, is something only time will really tell." Ethan considered his own words carefully. "I've learned, this past year, not to demand certainty before extending trust. Sometimes you simply have to watch someone's actions accumulate, patiently, and adjust as the evidence actually arrives."
"That's a healthier approach than either of us might have managed a year ago."
"Considerably healthier," Ethan agreed, pulling her closer against his side.
They stayed like that for a long while, the city settling into its late evening quiet beyond the windows, both of them grateful, in the particular, accumulated way that only comes from genuinely difficult journeys, for exactly this ordinary, hard-won peace. Genuinely, entirely, at peace. Nothing left to hide, nothing left to fear, only this good, ordinary life still unfolding ahead of them both. Exactly as they'd both chosen it to be.
You've reached the end of this chapter
