They'd decided to call her mother first, agreeing it felt right to share the news with Chloe's immediate family before venturing into the considerably more complex territory of the Vance family's various reactions. Chloe dialed with hands slightly unsteady, Ethan sitting close beside her, both of them anticipating the emotional flood they knew was coming based purely on how her mother had reacted to every previous significant announcement in Chloe's life.
Chloe's mother cried for nearly ten full minutes once the news finally arrived, the phone call stretching considerably longer than either of them anticipated as she cycled through joy, disbelief, and an immediate, overwhelming need to discuss nursery colors despite the pregnancy still being in its earliest stages.
"A grandchild," her mother said, for perhaps the fifth time, still visibly processing the enormity of it. "I can't believe it. When are you due? Have you thought about names? Do you know the gender yet?"
"Mom, we just found out ourselves a few weeks ago. We're still processing this too."
"Of course, of course. I'm simply overwhelmed with happiness, sweetheart. This is exactly the news I've been hoping for, though I promised myself I wouldn't pressure you about grandchildren the way some mothers do." Her voice carried genuine, uncomplicated joy. "I'm so happy for you both. Truly."
"How's your father taking the news?" Chloe asked, once her mother's initial wave of emotion had settled slightly. "I haven't spoken with him directly yet."
"He's currently sitting beside me, grinning so widely I'm not certain he's capable of forming complete sentences," her mother said, laughing. "Here, let me put him on properly."
Her father's voice, when it arrived, carried its own quiet, considerable emotion. "A grandchild," he said simply. "I don't think I have adequate words for how happy this makes me, sweetheart. I'm already looking forward to teaching them to fish, assuming Ethan doesn't mind sharing that particular tradition."
"I'd be honored," Ethan said, leaning close enough to be heard through the phone. "Thank you, both of you, for such genuine joy about this news."
"There's nothing but joy here, believe me," her father said. "Nothing but pure, considerable joy."
---
Marcus received the news over coffee, considerably more composed than Chloe's mother but no less genuinely moved by the announcement.
"That's wonderful," he said, something visibly touched in his expression. "I'm honored you told me so directly, given everything."
"We wanted you to know properly, rather than through family gossip," Ethan said. "You're part of this family in the ways that actually matter now, Marcus. We wanted you included from the beginning."
"That means more than I can properly express," Marcus said, something thick in his voice. "I promise to be the kind of family member this child deserves, going forward. Whatever that requires of me."
"We know you will," Chloe said warmly. "You've already proven that, these past several months."
"How's the consulting business, beyond this considerable news you've just shared with me?" Marcus asked, once the initial celebration had settled, genuinely curious about the broader life developments Chloe had mentioned in passing during their meeting.
"The sequel's doing wonderfully, actually. Better than I dared hope, given how personal the material became."
"I've read it, for what it's worth. Beautifully done. I recognized pieces of my own journey reflected in the redemption arc, which I found unexpectedly moving." Marcus's expression turned thoughtful. "I hope, someday, my own story might warrant something similarly hopeful, once I've actually proven the change is lasting."
"I think you're already proving that, Marcus. Every week, in small, consistent ways."
"I hope you're right," Marcus said, something genuinely touched in his expression at the vote of confidence.
---
Harold's reaction arrived with characteristic formality, though genuine warmth broke through his usual composed exterior once the initial pleasantries concluded.
"This is wonderful news for the family," Harold said, over the phone. "A new generation, carrying forward everything we've built. I'm genuinely delighted, Ethan."
"Thank you, Harold. We wanted to share this properly with you, given everything the family's navigated recently."
"I appreciate that consideration. And Chloe — congratulations to you as well, genuinely. I know the beginning of your relationship with this family was considerably complicated. I'm glad to see it's evolved into something this genuinely happy."
"Thank you, Harold. That means a great deal, honestly."
"Have you considered godparents yet?" Harold asked, unexpectedly, once the initial congratulations had concluded. "I don't mean to presume, given how complicated family roles have been recently, but I wanted to offer, if it would mean anything, to serve in whatever capacity might feel appropriate — perhaps simply as a supportive elder, rather than anything more formal."
"That's a generous offer, Harold," Ethan said, genuinely surprised by the gesture. "We haven't decided anything definite yet, but we'll certainly consider it."
"No pressure either way. I simply wanted you to know the offer exists, given how much this family's dynamics have shifted these past months. I'd like to be a positive presence for this child, in whatever form that takes."
"We appreciate that, genuinely," Chloe added. "Thank you for offering."
---
Constance's reaction, predictably, arrived with immediate enthusiasm about planning opportunities, though tempered now by lessons learned from the wedding negotiations.
"A baby shower, obviously," Constance said, barely containing her excitement. "Though I promise to consult you both on scale this time, having learned my lesson rather thoroughly from the wedding planning experience."
"We'd appreciate that, Constance," Chloe said, laughing at the acknowledgment. "Something small would mean a great deal to us."
"Small, but properly celebrated. I've learned that particular lesson well." Constance's voice softened genuinely. "I'm truly delighted for you both. This family needed exactly this kind of joy, after everything we've weathered together."
"I promise, this time, to actually respect your preferences from the very beginning," Constance added, something genuinely self-aware in her tone. "I've learned, watching how beautifully the wedding turned out despite my initial resistance to your vision, that your instincts about what actually matters deserve more trust than I initially extended."
"That means considerably more than you probably realize, Constance," Chloe said, genuinely touched by the growth evident in the admission.
"I'm trying to be better, in whatever small ways I can manage. This family has weathered considerable change these past several months. I'd like to be part of the positive evolution, rather than clinging to old patterns purely out of habit."
"You're already contributing to that positive evolution, simply by saying this," Ethan added warmly.
---
Dorothy's reaction carried its own particular warmth, considerably less concerned with planning logistics and more focused on the emotional significance of the news.
"I knew you two would build something beautiful together," Dorothy said, genuine tears audible in her voice. "From that very first family dinner, watching you charm poor Phillip with your directness — I knew immediately you were exactly what this family needed."
"That means so much, Dorothy. Thank you for believing in us from the beginning."
"I've had sixty years of watching this family's various entanglements. I know genuine happiness when I see it, dear. This baby is going to be remarkably fortunate, having parents who chose each other this deliberately, this honestly."
"I want to share something with you, actually," Dorothy added, her voice carrying particular warmth, "something I've never told anyone in this family before. I lost a child myself, many years ago, before I ever married into the Vance name. It's part of why family joy like this means so considerably much to me — I understand, more than most, exactly how precious and fragile this kind of news actually is."
"Dorothy, I'm so sorry," Chloe said softly, genuinely moved by the unexpected vulnerability. "Thank you for sharing that with us."
"I share it because I want you to know how deeply I mean every word of my joy for you both. This isn't simply polite enthusiasm. This is genuine, hard-won gratitude for witnessing exactly this kind of happiness in someone I've grown to love dearly these past several months."
"That means more than I can properly express," Chloe said, tears gathering at the corners of her eyes.
---
Mai's reaction, once the news finally became public knowledge beyond her already-suspected discovery, arrived with characteristic enthusiasm mixed with genuine emotion.
"I've been waiting weeks to properly celebrate this," she said, practically bouncing with excitement during their lunch. "I've already started a list of baby names, purely as suggestions, obviously, though I do think several of them are genuinely excellent."
"I appreciate the enthusiasm, though we're still deciding on names ourselves."
"Consider my list simply additional resources for your consideration." Mai's expression softened. "I'm genuinely so happy for you, Chloe. After everything — Adrian, the fake engagement, Marcus's scheme, Victoria's investigation — watching you land here, genuinely happy, expecting a child with someone who loves you completely. It feels like exactly the ending your story deserved."
"I feel the same way," Chloe said, tears gathering unexpectedly at her friend's genuine warmth. "Thank you for being here through all of it."
---
Priya's reaction carried its own particular blend of personal joy and professional consideration, genuinely delighted but already thinking through practical implications.
"This is wonderful news, genuinely," Priya said, once Chloe had shared the update during their regular call. "I imagine this might affect the timeline for any future writing projects, though nothing that can't be managed with proper planning."
"I've been thinking about that too, actually. I might need to adjust my pace once the baby arrives, though I don't intend to stop writing entirely."
"Whatever pace works for you, we'll accommodate. Family comes first, always. The writing will still be there whenever you're ready to return to it."
"Thank you, Priya. For understanding that, and for everything else these past several months."
"Reyes cried too, when I told her," Chloe added, laughing at the memory. "Which surprised me, given how professionally composed she usually maintains herself. She said something about watching my entire journey unfold these past several months, and how proud she felt witnessing this particular chapter arrive."
"Reyes has been remarkably invested in your wellbeing this whole time," Ethan observed. "I don't think either of us fully appreciated how much genuine care surrounded us until we actually needed it."
"I've been thinking about that a great deal, honestly. How different this entire experience feels from the isolated, anxious secrecy I maintained for years before any of this began."
"That's exactly the difference honesty makes, I think," Ethan said. "Genuine connection, rather than careful, isolated performance."
---
That evening, once all the various family reactions had settled into warm, accumulated joy, Chloe and Ethan sat together on the couch, both of them slightly overwhelmed by the collective outpouring of genuine happiness surrounding their news.
"That went considerably better than I anticipated," Ethan said, some tension visibly releasing from his shoulders. "Even Constance managed genuine restraint, comparatively speaking."
"I'm relieved, honestly. I worried the announcement might reopen old complications, given everything this family's navigated."
"I think we're finally past most of that particular chapter," Ethan said. "This feels like genuine progress, watching everyone respond with such uncomplicated joy."
"It does," Chloe agreed, resting against him. "I keep thinking about how different this feels from every fear I once carried about being fully known. This entire family knows everything about us now — the fake engagement, my secret identity, Marcus's scheme — and instead of judgment, we're simply met with genuine celebration."
"That's exactly what genuine family should feel like," Ethan said softly. "I'm grateful you taught me that distinction, through everything we've navigated together."
"Do you think we should tell Victoria too?" Chloe asked, later that evening, the question arriving somewhat unexpectedly given how peripherally Victoria now existed in their lives, entirely relocated to London and building her own separate life there.
"I've thought about that too, actually," Ethan admitted. "I don't think we owe her the news directly, given how our relationship has evolved. But I wouldn't mind if she eventually heard through the general family grapevine, given how genuinely she seemed to wish us well at the airport."
"I feel the same. Not an obligation, simply an openness, should the news naturally reach her."
"That feels like the right balance," Ethan agreed. "Genuine closure doesn't require ongoing updates, but it also doesn't require deliberate exclusion either."
---
They spent the rest of the evening quietly, planning small logistics for the pregnancy ahead — which room might eventually become a nursery, how they might balance their respective careers with new parenthood, the accumulated ordinary details that suddenly carried extraordinary weight given the new life they were preparing to welcome.
"I keep imagining what they'll actually be like," Chloe said, hand resting gently against her still barely-visible stomach. "Whether they'll have your eyes, or my stubbornness, or some entirely unexpected combination of both."
"Whatever combination arrives, they'll be loved completely," Ethan said, covering her hand with his own. "That's the one thing I'm entirely certain about, regardless of everything else we don't yet know."
"I love you," Chloe said softly. "And I love this considerable, unexpected life we're building together."
"I love you too," Ethan said, "and everything still ahead of us, however uncertain some of the details remain."
They sat together in comfortable silence, the city lights glowing steadily beyond the windows, both of them genuinely, entirely ready for whatever came next in the story they continued writing together, one honest chapter at a time.
They spent the rest of the evening slowly, letting the accumulated warmth of the day's various conversations settle comfortably around them both, the family's collective, genuine joy considerably more meaningful than either had anticipated when they'd first nervously begun the round of announcement calls that morning.
"I keep thinking about Dorothy's story," Chloe said, once the evening had settled into its final quiet hours. "How much courage it must have taken, sharing something that painful with us, purely to help us understand the depth of her genuine happiness."
"She's always struck me as the most emotionally honest member of the family," Ethan agreed. "I think that honesty is exactly why she was the first to recognize what was actually happening between us, back at that very first family dinner."
"I want to honor that kind of courage, somehow, going forward. Maybe by naming a middle name after her, if we ever settle on something appropriate."
"I think she'd be deeply moved by that gesture, whenever we're ready to discuss names more seriously."
"What surprised you most, out of everyone's reactions today?" Ethan asked, curious about Chloe's own experience of the considerable, accumulated outpouring of family joy.
"Harold, honestly. I never expected him to offer something as personal as godparent consideration, given how transactionally he approached everything when we first met."
"He's changed considerably too, I think, watching how this arrangement actually turned out. I don't believe he ever anticipated the board's transactional proposal producing something this genuinely happy."
"None of us anticipated that, really," Chloe said, smiling. "Which somehow makes it feel considerably more meaningful, having arrived here despite every unlikely obstacle along the way."
They stayed curled together on the couch considerably longer than either had planned, the day's collective outpouring of genuine family joy settling into something they both understood, without needing to say it explicitly, marked a significant turning point — not just in their own growing family, but in the entire complicated network of relationships that had once seemed defined purely by transaction and obligation, now genuinely, considerably rooted in love. Eighteen chapters remained in the story they continued to build, one honest, considerable joy at a time, and Chloe found herself, drifting finally toward sleep in Ethan's arms, entirely unafraid of whatever came next.
Mai texted one final time before signing off for the evening, a simple message carrying considerable warmth: *Today was genuinely one of the best days I've witnessed in your entire journey, and that includes the wedding. Sleep well, mama-to-be. The world is considerably better for having this kind of happiness in it.*
Chloe read the message twice, smiling, before setting her phone aside for the night, grateful beyond measure for exactly this kind of accumulated, genuine community surrounding her through every considerable turn her life had taken. She drifted toward sleep, finally, considerably at peace with exactly how full and blessed her life had become.
Ethan, watching her drift toward sleep beside him, felt his own considerable gratitude settle into something quietly overwhelming — for the family they'd both been given, complicated and imperfect but genuinely, entirely loving; for the child they were preparing to welcome; and most of all, for the woman beside him who'd taught him, through everything they'd survived together, exactly what genuine love and honesty could actually look like when finally, completely chosen. He pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, careful not to wake her, and let himself, finally, drift toward his own peaceful sleep as well. Tomorrow would bring its own considerable, ordinary business, but tonight, everything was simply, entirely enough. Enough, and considerably more than either of them had ever quite dared imagine possible, back when this whole unlikely story first began. A story that had started with an eleven-second clip and a board's transactional demand, and had somehow, against every reasonable expectation, become the truest, richest life either of them had ever known. Richest, and considerably, genuinely theirs. Every complicated, difficult, ultimately triumphant chapter of it.
Marcus, walking home alone that evening after his own considerable exchange with Chloe and Ethan, found himself thinking about Dorothy's story too, about genuine grief transformed patiently into genuine joy, and felt, for the first time in longer than he could clearly remember, entirely hopeful about his own eventual capacity to build something equally worthy. He walked home slowly, considerably lighter than when he'd arrived, ready to keep building toward whatever genuinely earned happiness still lay ahead of him. Ready, finally, entirely. Genuinely ready for it all. At long last. Truly. Home. Finally.
You've reached the end of this chapter
They'd decided to call her mother first, agreeing it felt right to share the news with Chloe's immediate family before venturing into the considerably more complex territory of the Vance family's various reactions.
Truly. Home. Finally.
