The contact went smoothly.
This was not something Valerie had permitted herself to assume in advance — assumptions about things going smoothly were a reliable way to be unprepared for the specific ways in which things did not — but it was what happened. The Aldenmoor messenger was where he was supposed to be, at the time he was supposed to be there, with the confirmation that the modified contact protocol had been received and understood and would be observed. The exchange took eleven minutes. She had prepared for complications that did not materialize, which was the best possible outcome and left her with a specific kind of leftover readiness that had nowhere to go.
She and Elena were back on the path west before midday.
The fog of the day before had left the forest with the particular clean quality of air that had been thoroughly washed — the light sharper than usual, the colors more specific, the smell of the ground and the trees and the moving water more present than it usually was. She noticed this and noted it and kept walking.
The secondary camp was three hours at their current pace. There was no reason to hurry and no reason to stop, and the path was clear, and the operational requirements of the day had been met, and for the first time since the evening Wren had ridden into camp with his face the color of ash, there was nothing immediately pressing that she needed to do.
She did not know what to do with this.
She was aware of it as a specific problem — not dramatically, not with the performance of someone who had discovered something surprising about themselves. Just: she had been running on task-completion for so long that the space between tasks had become unfamiliar territory, and unfamiliar territory required navigation, and she did not have a map for this particular kind of terrain.
Elena was walking beside her with the quality she had in the absence of urgency — the unhurried attention of someone who was moving through a place and allowing herself to be moved through rather than simply transiting it. She looked at the trees. She looked at the ground. She paused briefly to examine something growing at the base of an oak and then moved on without taking it, which meant she had looked and decided and the deciding had been sufficient.
Valerie watched her do this without meaning to watch her do this.
She had developed, over the past three weeks, a comprehensive and involuntary catalog of Elena's movements — the way she walked, the way she stopped, the way her attention distributed itself across a landscape, what she paused for and what she passed. She had not built this catalog deliberately. It had built itself, the way certain things built themselves when you spent enough time in proximity to them: through accumulation, through repetition, through the slow process of familiarity becoming knowledge.
Elena stopped.
Not the cautious stop of someone who had heard something — the stop of someone who had seen something and needed to address it. She crouched in a movement that was fluid and immediate, her attention going to a cluster of growth at the base of a mossy stone, and she looked at it with the focused quality she brought to examinations.
"Starwort," she said. Not to Valerie specifically — to the air, in the tone of someone confirming something they had suspected.
Valerie stopped beside her. Looked at the plant — small, low-growing, with the thin pale leaves of something that preferred shade and moisture. She recognized the name from a week ago, a passing reference Elena had made about a plant she had not found in the eastern forest and had wanted to.
Elena was already opening her satchel.
She worked with the focused attention she brought to all work, but different in quality from her clinical attention — more personal, more interested, the way she attended to things she had sought rather than things she had been given. She examined the specimens methodically, selected, collected, and as she worked she talked.
Not to Valerie, exactly. In the direction of Valerie, in the way of someone thinking out loud in the presence of someone whose presence they had factored in without requiring anything from it.
The starwort had three primary applications, she said, but the most useful was dependent on the developmental stage of the plant and the specific characteristics of this specimen suggested it was at the right stage for the third application, which was — she explained the third application in the specific, interested language of someone who found this genuinely fascinating and expected the world to keep pace.
Valerie sat on a nearby stone and listened.
She had not been planning to sit. She sat anyway, because standing seemed to require a reason to keep standing rather than sitting, and she did not have a particular reason at the moment, and sitting was what happened when you did not have a reason to keep standing and were also not going anywhere.
Elena continued to talk about the starwort. Valerie continued to listen. She learned that the third application was useful for a specific kind of wound infection that standard preparations addressed poorly, and that Elena had been trying to find a consistent source of the plant for two years, and that finding it here meant she could potentially dry enough for several months' worth of use.
This information was not operationally relevant to anything Valerie was currently managing.
She found, sitting on the stone in the clean post-fog light with Elena's voice in the air, that this was entirely fine.
She was listening because she wanted to hear what Elena said about starwort, which was not a sentence she had expected to construct about herself today or any day, but here it was, constructed, sitting in her mind with the settled quality of a true thing.
Elena had moved to a second cluster of the plant — slightly different conditions, she explained, the drainage was better here which would affect the concentration of the active compound. She crouched and examined and talked, and from the corner of her attention there was a movement.
Small. Fast. The specific movement of a creature that had not quite committed to approaching but was making preliminary inquiries in the direction of approach.
The squirrel was perhaps a foot from Elena's bag, which was open beside her on the ground. It sat up — the full vertical of a squirrel that has decided to assess the situation from maximum height — and regarded Elena with the unwavering attention of a small animal that has identified a potential resource and is determining the most efficient approach.
Elena saw it.
She went completely still.
The squirrel did not move. Elena did not move. They regarded each other at a distance of approximately fourteen inches with the focused mutual attention of two beings who had found themselves in unexpected proximity and were deciding what to make of it.
Then the squirrel moved closer.
Elena remained still. The squirrel came to within six inches of the open bag — close enough that its intentions were clear, if intentions were the right word for the operational calculus of a squirrel near dried provisions. It sat up again. It looked at Elena. It looked at the bag. It appeared to be conducting a risk assessment.
Elena said, in a voice that was barely above a whisper: "Those are mine."
The squirrel did not appear to take this under advisement.
"I know you think that's a negotiating position," Elena continued, with the tone of someone engaging seriously with a problem that did not deserve serious engagement but was receiving it anyway, "but I've been looking for starwort for two years and I'm not in a position to offer concessions on the dried berries."
The squirrel looked at her.
"I could explain the pharmacological properties of what I'm collecting, if that would help contextualize the relative value of the exchange," Elena said. "But I suspect you're going to find that unpersuasive."
The squirrel looked at the bag.
Looked at Elena.
Then, with the decisive movement of a creature that had heard an argument, considered it, and found it insufficient, it turned and departed — not quickly, not with the alarm of flight, but with the unhurried dignity of something that had other options.
Elena watched it go.
Then she looked at her hand, which had nothing in it.
"That," she said, "was a terrible negotiation."
Valerie laughed.
She heard it happen — the sound coming from her before the decision to make it, the specific quality of something that had bypassed the usual filters, the laugh of a person who had been caught by something genuinely funny in a moment when they were not prepared to be caught. It started as something small and then wasn't small, and she heard the unfamiliarity of it — the specific sound of her own laugh as though from a small distance, the recognition of something she had not heard in a long time coming from herself.
She did not know how long it had been. Long enough that the sound was unfamiliar. Long enough that she heard it the way you heard yourself in a recording, the slight strangeness of a familiar voice in an unfamiliar medium.
Elena turned.
The expression on her face was one Valerie had not seen — complete surprise, uncomplicated and genuine, the expression of someone who had not expected this specific thing and was receiving it without any management of the receiving. Then something else moved through it — something warmer, something that had Elena in it in the specific way that Elena's most unguarded expressions had Elena in them rather than the attended version of her, the one that was always looking outward at the person in front of her.
Elena laughed.
The laugh Valerie had heard once before — in the fog, brief and unguarded, the laugh of someone who had not prepared to laugh. It was the same now and also more, the way things were more when they were shared rather than surprised-into, and the two of them sat in the post-fog forest light and laughed about a squirrel's negotiating tactics with the specific ease of people who were, in this moment, simply here.
The laughter subsided in the way laughter subsided when it had been real — gradually, in diminishing waves, leaving a specific kind of quiet behind it that was different from the quiet before. Lighter. Lighter in the specific way of air that had been used for something uncomplicated and was recovered from the using.
Valerie became aware that she was looking at Elena.
This was not unusual — she looked at Elena frequently, more frequently than she had ever looked at anyone with the specific quality of looking that she now associated only with this direction. But this particular looking had something different in it, something that the laugh had stripped the management from, something that was sitting on her face without permission and that she had not yet moved to address.
Elena was looking back at her.
Not the cataloguing look. Not the checking look. Not the clinical attention or the professional observation or any of the modes Elena moved through in the course of her days. Something that had Elena simply in it — Elena looking at Valerie because Valerie was the thing she was looking at and she had decided, in this moment, to look.
No reason. No function. Just: this.
Valerie looked away.
She stood — the motion of standing, the familiar sequence of getting to her feet, giving her body something to do. She brushed her hands on her coat. She looked at the path.
"We should cover ground before the light changes," she said.
Operational. Correct. True.
She started walking.
Elena gathered her satchel and fell into step beside her, and they were on the path west and the secondary camp was two and a half hours away, and the afternoon light in the forest was the particular light of Blackwood in recovery — warm and indirect, the kind that did not demand anything from the people moving through it.
They walked for several minutes in the quiet that was the quiet of after.
Then Elena said, not looking at her: "You should do that more."
Valerie looked at the path ahead. "Navigate back to camp?"
"Laugh."
The word arrived and settled the way Elena's direct statements settled — without preamble, without softening, simply accurate and therefore present in a way that demanded to be reckoned with rather than managed.
Valerie said nothing.
The forest went about its business around them. The path continued. The light continued its afternoon work, that slow warm process of moving toward evening that the forest accommodated without resistance.
She was thinking about the map.
Not the operational map — the other one, Marcus Vane's incomplete cartography of Blackwood, the seven years of carrying without adding to. She had not thought about it since she had told Elena about it in the fog, the small offering of a private thing to someone who had received it carefully. She had expected, on the other side of the telling, to feel the specific vulnerability of having said something she did not usually say — the slight exposure of a private thing made public.
Instead she felt something she did not have a precise word for. The map in her mind had a different quality now than it had before she had said it — less like something stored, more like something present. Less like something she was carrying and more like something she was moving toward.
The distinction was small. It was also, she was finding, significant.
The path curved south, toward the secondary camp. The light was in the trees at the angle it was in the trees in the late afternoon, when the forest was at its most particular — the quality of golden that appeared only at this hour, that made familiar things look like themselves but more.
Elena was beside her.
Valerie was aware of her the way she was always aware of her — specific, continuous, the particular awareness that had stopped being threat assessment sometime in the first week and had become something she did not have a clean name for but which was very present and entirely its own thing.
She thought about the map. She thought about the parts her grandfather had not reached. She thought about the quality of light in the post-fog forest and what it might look like in the sections of Blackwood she had never entered, the deep-old sections where the trees were old enough to have developed their own internal logic and the ground was soft with centuries of leaf-fall.
She thought: I want to go there.
Not someday. Not if circumstances allow. The specific, present-tense wanting of a thing that had been abstract and had become concrete, the way things became concrete when you said them aloud to someone who had looked at them and said: that sounds like something worth doing.
The camp was two hours ahead.
The path was clear.
Elena walked beside her, and the forest held them both, and Valerie walked toward camp and thought about the map and found, for the first time in a long time, that she was also thinking about what came after.
