The intelligence came in the form of a rider.
Not Mira's network — someone else, a contact Elena had not seen before, who arrived at the camp's edge in the late morning with the quality of someone who had covered ground quickly and had information that justified the pace. She watched from the supply area as Reed received the rider, as the exchange happened, as Reed's expression did the specific thing it did when information required immediate escalation.
Valerie was in the briefing within ten minutes.
Elena continued with her preparation work and listened to the quality of the camp shift around her — not dramatically, the way a well-run operation shifted when threat assessment upgraded, the specific increase in purposefulness that was not panic and not urgency but the particular focused attention of people who had been through enough to know what a changed situation felt like.
She was called to the briefing half an hour later.
The intelligence was about the Governor's office at Aldenmoor — not the garrison where they had been before, the administrative center, the place where policy was made and correspondence was kept and the specific documentation that drove everything else originated. There was, according to the rider, a meeting scheduled in ten days. The Governor, several regional administrators, and representatives of the crown. The topic, according to Mira's secondary source, included a final determination on the Shadow Band.
Final determination was the kind of phrase that did not require elaboration.
Aldric laid out the situation with the economy of a man who had been briefing in difficult circumstances for decades. They needed eyes inside the administrative center's relay station — not the center itself, the relay station three miles east, which handled correspondence routing and which would, in the days before the meeting, be carrying the documents that established what the final determination actually was. Understanding the scope before the meeting was understanding the threat. Understanding the threat was understanding what could be done about it.
The reconnaissance would require two people, two days, overnight at a waypoint Valerie knew. High risk.
Elena attended to all of this with the focused attention she brought to situations that required it.
Afterward, when the briefing had concluded and Reed and Aldric had moved to their respective tasks and the camp was reorganizing itself around the new information, Valerie found her at the supply area.
She came with the quality she had been carrying since the morning after the cave — the specific careful quality, the one that was not defensive but was deliberate, the quality of someone navigating a situation they had not navigated before and were proceeding thoughtfully. She stood at the supply area's entrance and said:
"Medical supplies for two days, overnight. Pain management, wound treatment, antidote coverage for the standard contact toxins in that region. Can you prepare that?"
Elena looked at her.
She looked at the specific quality of the question — practical, professional, the question of a mission planner assembling required resources. She also looked at what the question was doing, which was providing a structure in which they could be together and functional without having to navigate what being together had become in the last two days.
She said: "Yes. I'll have it ready by morning."
She began the preparation. Valerie began the parallel work of the supply inventory they both knew needed doing. They worked in the same space with the same efficiency they had always worked in the same space, the specific ease of people who had found their working rhythm with each other and maintained it.
At some point Valerie said: "I want you to come."
Elena stopped.
Not with the stop of surprise — she had been tracking the conversation, had known this was coming in the way you knew things when you were paying attention. But the specific quality of what had been said was different from what she had expected. Not: I need you for the medical knowledge, or: you'll be useful for the plant identification, or any of the framings that would have made it practical. *I want you to come.* The want. The subject: I. The object: you.
She said: "I'll come."
No hesitation in it — she had made her decision about coming with Valerie into difficult situations some weeks ago, in a tent before Crestfall, and she had not revised the decision.
Valerie looked at her for a moment with the quality of the checking look, but looking for something different from usual. Then she returned to her work.
---
Aldric found Elena in the afternoon.
He had been doing this more as his recovery progressed — seeking her out for conversations that were not entirely operational, that had the quality of a man who had things he wanted to say and was finding the time for them. She had come to appreciate these conversations. He was not an easy person to know, but he was a precise one, and precision was something she had always found valuable even when it was uncomfortable.
He sat and she sat and he said, without preamble: "You should know something about the Governor's methods."
She listened.
He explained with the flat, careful accuracy that was the Vane family's particular inheritance — not dramatizing, not editorializing, simply laying out what was documented and what could be inferred from it. The Governor, in his thirty years of administration, had a specific pattern when dealing with organized resistance. He did not typically go for the leaders directly — he went for what the leaders cared about. He found the leverage point and he applied the pressure.
In Aldric's case, the leverage point had been Valerie.
He said it plainly: they had not found him by accident, or through poor operational security, or through any failure of the Shadow Band's protocols. They had found him because they had been watching her — specifically, deliberately — and had traced her movements back to him. They had taken him to create a situation in which she would come for him. Which she had.
Elena sat with this.
She thought about the new shape of the wound she had been watching develop since the morning after the cave — the specific fear that was not about the past but about the future, the fear that had made Valerie route the reconnaissance plan around Elena's exposure without acknowledging that she was doing it. She had understood it abstractly. She understood it differently now.
The precedent was real. The Governor had already demonstrated, with Aldric, that Valerie's care for people was a vulnerability to be exploited. Valerie knew this. She had always known it. And now she was carrying new information — that the person she had kissed in a cave in the rain was someone the Governor might identify as the next leverage point.
The wound was not irrational.
Elena sat with this understanding and found that it changed the quality of her response — not from concern to dismissal, but from concern to something more specific. Something that understood the fear from the inside rather than from the outside.
She thanked Aldric and went back to her preparation.
---
The map session was in the late afternoon.
Valerie had drawn the reconnaissance route on a piece of canvas — the relay station's location, the approach, the waypoint for the overnight, the extraction route if something went wrong. She walked Elena through it with the thoroughness she brought to all briefings: complete, specific, no assumption that the listener would fill in gaps from context.
Elena listened and tracked.
She also watched.
She watched the way Valerie placed her on the map — not watching Valerie know she was being watched. The first approach: the path that went around the most exposed section rather than through it. The overnight position: a location that had good cover but was further from the relay station than the closer option, which would have been more efficient but less protected. The extraction route: the longer one, the one that went through known Shadow Band territory rather than the faster route through open country.
Each individual decision had a justification. Each justification was real. The aggregate of them was something else.
She said: "You're routing me away from the high-risk positions."
Valerie did not stop what she was doing. She was pointing at the waypoint on the canvas, and she kept pointing, and the pointing became a pause rather than a continuation.
Elena said: "I can handle high-risk positions. You know that."
"I know," Valerie said.
Two words.
She said them to the map. She said them with the quality of someone who was acknowledging a fact and was not using the acknowledgment to change their position. She said them clearly and without hedge, which meant she was not pretending she didn't know — she was knowing it and continuing anyway.
Elena received this.
She thought about what she had learned from Aldric. She thought about Corren and the three seconds and the specific shape of a wound that had evidence to support it. She thought about the cave and the morning and the new fear and the way the new fear was the old wound wearing the shape of something real rather than something imagined.
She did not push.
Not because she didn't have more to say — she had more to say, had been organizing it since the afternoon's conversation with Aldric. But she had learned, in eight weeks of paying close attention to this specific person, that there were moments when more to say was the right thing and moments when the two words had already said what needed saying and adding to them was a form of not-listening.
The two words had said: I know your capability and I am doing this anyway. That was honest. That was, in its way, more honest than a justification would have been.
She said: "All right."
They continued with the map.
The final plan had Elena in positions that were useful and not invisible — Valerie had not removed her from the operation, had found the configuration in which she was effective without being in the places where the highest probability of direct threat contact was. It was, Elena observed, a plan that worked. It was also a plan that had been built around a specific, unacknowledged requirement.
She sat back and looked at it.
She thought: she is trying to do both. She is trying to have the thing and protect the thing simultaneously, and she does not yet know how to tell that the trying to protect is the thing that will eventually make the having impossible.
This was the shape of the crisis she had been watching develop.
Not yet arrived. Building.
---
The evening before the mission was quiet.
They sat at the fire — the same fire, the same positions, the same quality of two people who had accumulated enough evenings together that the fire knew them, or felt like it did. The camp had settled into the night routine. Aldric had retired early. Reed was on the first watch.
Elena looked at Valerie.
She thought about everything she had been thinking about all day — the rider, the briefing, Aldric's revelation, the map, the two words. She thought about the wound and its new shape and the way it was building toward something. She thought about the cave and the morning and the four words — *we have time* — and whether she still believed them.
She did. That was the thing. She still believed them. But the having of time required something from both of them, and what it required from Valerie was something Valerie was not yet ready to give.
She thought about whether to say this and decided it was not the right moment for the full version of it. The right moment for the full version was not the night before a mission.
But there was a smaller version. A seed version. Something that could be planted now and would be there later, when the full version needed it.
"Valerie," she said.
Valerie looked at her.
"Whatever happens tomorrow — I chose to be here." She held the look. "That's mine to choose."
She said it with the flat certainty she used for things she knew to be true. Not a reassurance — a fact. The specific fact of agency: this is my choice, made by me, owned by me. The consequences of it are mine to carry. You are not responsible for what I have chosen.
Valerie looked at her in the firelight.
Elena watched what the words did.
They arrived. She could see them arrive — the small adjustment in Valerie's expression, the fractional shift that indicated information being received and processed. The acknowledgment of the content. And beneath the acknowledgment, the other thing: the weight of someone who had heard a true thing and was not yet in the place where they could fully use it.
Not yet.
But heard.
Valerie said nothing.
Elena let the silence be the silence it was — the silence of a thing that had been said and was being held, not dismissed, not acted on, held.
She stood.
"Sleep well," she said.
She went to her tent and lay down and thought about the morning and the mission and the slow approach of something that was going to have to be gone through before it was over.
She was not afraid of it.
She was, if she was honest with herself, something closer to ready.
