The alarm on Mila's phone had been going off for four minutes before she finally reached out from under the blanket and silenced it.
She lay still for a moment, staring at the water stain on the ceiling above her bed. It was shaped vaguely like a bird mid-flight, wings caught in an awkward, lopsided spread. She had named it Gerald sometime in her second year of living here, mostly as a joke, and mostly because naming things made them easier to endure.
"Morning, Gerald," she whispered.
From downstairs, the sounds of the house were already in motion — the aggressive clatter of dishes, the television turned too loud, her aunt Diane's voice cutting through the walls at a frequency that seemed specifically engineered to reach Mila's room.
"Mila! The laundry isn't going to fold itself!"
She closed her eyes once more. Counted to five. Then she got up.
The room was small — small in the way that felt deliberate, like whoever had assigned it to her had done the math and given her exactly the minimum a person could survive in. A single bed, a narrow wardrobe, a desk wedged under the only window. The window itself faced the neighbor's wall, which meant natural light reached her for approximately forty minutes each morning if the sun cooperated.
She dressed quickly, practical and unremarkable: jeans, a soft grey top, hair pulled back. Downstairs, Diane was sorting mail at the kitchen table while simultaneously talking on the phone and ignoring the fact that the eggs on the stove were starting to burn.
Mila moved around her aunt without a word, turned the heat down on the eggs, found a spatula, rescued what she could.
"You're welcome," she said to no one.
Diane glanced up. Pointed at the laundry basket by the door with two fingers, then turned back to her phone call.
Mila folded the laundry. Then she washed the dishes from last night, the ones that had been waiting in the sink when she got home from her evening class and had apparently waited patiently through the night. Then she swept the kitchen floor because the alternative was watching breadcrumbs slowly migrate toward the center of the room and she couldn't leave the house knowing that was happening.
By the time she sat down to eat — a small bowl of rice congee she had made herself from the half-empty pot in the fridge — it was nearly eight-thirty, and she had already been awake for an hour and a half.
Chores were not asked. They were simply a condition of residence, an unspoken tax she paid on the room with Gerald on the ceiling. Three years she had been living here, since her parents died and the inheritance ran through their debts and there was nowhere else. Three years she had been paying this particular form of rent.
She didn't let herself dwell on it. Dwelling was a luxury she had learned she couldn't afford.
---
He had found her in the kitchen, the same way he always delivered news he knew she wouldn't like — standing in the doorway, keys in hand, already halfway out, so the conversation was over before it started.
"The Vance Entertainment gala is tonight. Solenne building, starts at eight. You're working the floor for Aurelius Catering. The uniform will be on the table."
Mila had looked up from the dishes. "I have a presentation review tomorrow morning."
"Then you'd better be back by midnight." He had said this without looking at her, his attention already drifting toward his phone. "I've put in a word with Chen Mei-Lin's assistant about your scholarship application. She's going to be at the event tonight. It's a good opportunity for you to make an impression."
Mila had set the cup she was drying down very carefully on the counter.
A word put in. With an assistant. At an event where she would be carrying a tray of drinks, wearing a uniform she hadn't seen yet, with no introduction and no context and no real reason for a senior A&R executive to look twice at her. That was the opportunity.
"Okay," she said.
"Don't embarrass the family."
She had turned back to the dishes. "I never do."
He left without answering. She stood at the sink for a moment after she heard the door close, feeling the familiar weight of the situation settle across her shoulders — not crushing, not anymore, just present, the way a bruise is present, something you've learned to move around.
She finished the dishes. She always finished the dishes.
---
Her afternoon class finished at two, and she had three hours before she needed to start getting ready for whatever her uncle had decided tonight would be.
She took the long way home.
Aurora City in the late afternoon was something she could almost love without reservation — the way the light slanted gold across the glass towers downtown, the street vendors starting to set up near the arts district, the distant sound of someone practicing violin near the park. The city had a pulse you could feel through the soles of your shoes if you walked slowly enough.
Mila walked slowly.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Zoe.
**ZOE:** okay i looked it up and that gala tonight is NOT just any industry event babe **ZOE:** vance entertainment is hosting. as in Adrian Vance. as in The Adrian Vance. **ZOE:** please tell me your uncle is not actually making you work that
Mila stared at the messages for a moment, then typed back.
**MILA:** he is actually making me work that **ZOE:** MILA. **ZOE:** that man fired his own assistant for scheduling a meeting three minutes late. THREE MINUTES. **ZOE:** the whole industry is scared of him. like not even the normal kind of scared, the kind where people check if he's in the room before they say his name **MILA:** that seems like an exaggeration **ZOE:** it is not an exaggeration!! i have a friend who interned at a label he partnered with and she said the energy in any room he walks into changes. like physically changes. like everyone just goes very still **MILA:** sounds like a fun party **ZOE:** please be careful **MILA:** i'm going to be holding a tray of champagne glasses. i'll be fine.
She put her phone away and kept walking.
Adrian Vance. She knew the name, of course — everyone in Aurora City who had any connection to the entertainment industry knew it, the way you knew the names of weather systems before they made landfall. CEO of Vance Entertainment, which was less a company and more a gravitational field that the entire city's music and film ecosystem orbited around. They trained artists, produced albums, financed films, ran three separate record labels under their umbrella, and owned the two most prestigious performance venues in the city.
If you wanted a career in music in Aurora City, you were either signed to Vance Entertainment, in partnership with Vance Entertainment, hoping to be signed to Vance Entertainment, or quietly terrified that Vance Entertainment might decide to notice you for the wrong reasons.
Mila fell into none of these categories, technically. She was a performing arts student with a scholarship that covered sixty percent of her tuition, a voice she had been training since she was twelve, and a very small, very private notebook in which she had written down exactly what she wanted her life to look like in five years.
Adrian Vance was not in her notebook. But the stages his company owned were.
---
The uniform Marcus had arranged for her was waiting on the kitchen table when she got home — folded, official-looking, tagged with the name of the catering company that had been hired for the event.
Mila shook it out and held it up.
Then she held it up a second time, in case her first assessment had been wrong.
It had not been wrong.
The skirt was short. Not aggressively, shockingly short, but short in a calculated way — the kind of short that made a statement about the person wearing it without technically crossing any formal dress code. The neckline of the accompanying blouse was similarly considered in its placement.
She stood in the kitchen holding the uniform and felt something hot and quiet move through her chest.
Her aunt walked through, glanced at the uniform, glanced at Mila. "It's the standard issue for those events," Diane said, already turning away. "They want a certain aesthetic for the serving staff. Very common."
"Is it," Mila said.
Diane looked at her then, a long and measuring look. "Don't start, Mila."
Mila folded the uniform back up.
She went upstairs. She pulled on a thin cardigan she planned to keep over her shoulders for as long as possible. She pulled her hair up in a way that felt professional. She found the small pair of earrings her mother had left her and put them in, the ones with the tiny silver stars, because tonight she needed the reminder that she had belonged to someone who had chosen her on purpose.
She sat on the edge of her bed.
The notebook was in the drawer of her desk. She didn't open it — she didn't need to. She had read it enough times that the pages were soft at the edges and she had every line of it somewhere behind her eyes.
*Five years. Real stages, real lights. A voice people listen to because they want to, not because they're paid to.*
She thought about the rooms she would never normally enter. About the people who would be in those rooms tonight — producers, directors, A&R executives, the gatekeepers of a world she was trying to get into through a door that kept changing location every time she found it.
She thought about her uncle's instructions: *Don't draw attention. Don't talk about music. Don't embarrass me.*
She closed her eyes.
Nobody had to know she was listening. Nobody had to know she was watching. She would carry a tray and she would be invisible, and she would absorb every conversation she was close enough to overhear, every name she could match to a face, every fragment of information about how this world actually worked from the inside.
She had survived three years in this house by being underestimated. She had learned to use it like a tool.
*Tonight is research,* she told herself. *That's all. Go in, do the job, come home with information. Use it.*
Her phone buzzed again.
**ZOE:** i know you're going to be fine because you are annoyingly capable of handling everything **ZOE:** but please text me when you're out okay **MILA:** i will **ZOE:** and if anyone gives you trouble— **MILA:** zoe **ZOE:** —you have every right to be absolutely feral about it. just saying.
Mila smiled at her phone, small and real.
**MILA:** noted. thank you.
She put the phone in her bag, checked the earrings one more time in the narrow mirror on the back of her door, and went downstairs to where Marcus was waiting with the car keys.
---
The car pulled up at eight-twelve, and Mila stepped out into the kind of cold that comes off a city at night — not the cold of nature but the cold of glass and steel exhaling the day's heat into an indifferent sky.
The Solenne was even larger from street level than it had looked in photographs. She had seen it before, passing through this part of the city on the bus, but seeing it tonight — stepping out of her uncle's car in a catering uniform while three black cars ahead of her were releasing women in gowns and men in suits that cost more than her annual rent — was a different order of experience.
A man in a headset was directing staff traffic toward a side entrance. Mila adjusted the strap of her bag, squared her shoulders, and walked toward him.
"Aurelius Catering," she said when he looked at her.
He checked his tablet, gave her a badge, pointed at the door.
Just like that, she was inside.
The service corridors of the Solenne were clean and bright and entirely efficient, the hidden machinery of an event that, from the outside, was designed to look effortless. She followed the yellow line on the floor the way she'd been told, found the briefing room, took her tray assignment, memorized the chart, and rode the elevator to the twenty-third floor.
The doors opened.
And she stopped.
---
The Solenne was the kind of building that made you feel your own smallness before you even stepped inside.
It occupied half a city block on the edge of Aurora City's financial district, all dark glass and brushed steel, the kind of architecture that communicated wealth not through ornamentation but through restraint — through the statement that whoever had commissioned this building had not needed to prove anything, had simply decided this was where beauty and power should live, and the building had obliged.
The gala occupied the ballroom on the twenty-third floor. Mila knew this because she had been briefed by the catering team in a side entrance two floors below, handed her tray and her route and a laminated seating chart that she was expected to have memorized by the time the first guests arrived.
She had memorized it in the elevator.
The ballroom, when she finally stepped into it, made her stop breathing for exactly three seconds.
It was enormous and low-lit, draped in deep burgundy and gold, with floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides that turned the Aurora City skyline into a living painting. The kind of room that swallowed sound and replaced it with something softer — the murmur of expensive conversation, the low thread of live music from a quartet in the corner, the clean bright ring of crystal glasses meeting each other in toasts she wasn't close enough to hear.
Everywhere she looked, there were people she recognized from the industry. Faces she'd studied online, in interviews, on album liner notes. The woman by the windows was Chen Mei-Lin, head of A&R at Solstice Records. The man near the string quartet was Director Haruto Sato, whose last film had swept the Aurora City Awards. The cluster of people near the bar, laughing in the practiced way of people who were always performing even when they weren't, were affiliated with at least three different major labels.
Mila kept her face neutral. She picked up her route and began.
She was good at this, she discovered. Good at the specific skill of being present without announcing herself — of moving through spaces, offering glasses, stepping aside, reading the micro-rhythms of conversation to know when to approach and when to hold back. She had spent three years learning to be invisible in a house where she was simultaneously expected to be useful, and apparently those were transferable skills.
*This is a room where careers are made and ended,* she thought, as she offered champagne to a man she recognized as an executive producer at one of the city's top management firms. He took a glass without looking at her. *And right now I'm invisible in it. Fine. Use that.*
She listened. She catalogued. She watched how certain people moved toward other certain people, who deferred to whom, which names made conversations sharpen with attention and which made them drift. She was building a map in her head, one she would transcribe into her notebook later, adding it to everything else she had collected in three years of wanting this life from the outside.
She was on her third circuit of the room when she heard it.
A voice. Not raised — that was the thing about it, the thing that made it different. It cut across the ambient noise of the room not because it was loud but because of a quality she couldn't immediately name, some density or precision in it that made everything else seem slightly less real by comparison.
"If the projections were accurate the first time, there would have been no need for a second meeting."
Mila didn't turn. She kept moving, kept her tray level, kept her expression exactly where it needed to be. But something in her body registered the voice the way you registered a change in air pressure before a storm — not alarm, exactly, but a kind of alertness, a shift in attention she hadn't chosen.
A man somewhere behind her to the left was talking, and whoever he was talking to had gone very quiet in the way that Zoe had described.
*The kind where people check if he's in the room before they say his name.*
The champagne glasses on her tray were perfectly still.
A different server appeared at her elbow — a girl named Rosa who had introduced herself in the elevator — and whispered without moving her lips, the way you learned to do in these situations: "Do you know who that is?"
Mila didn't answer immediately. She was listening to the quality of the silence that had spread from that voice outward, a silence that wasn't empty but full, full of thirty or forty people in a room recalibrating the space around them.
"No," she said finally. Quietly. "Tell me."
Rosa's tray didn't move either. Her voice was barely sound.
"Adrian Vance."
Mila's fingers tightened for one half-second on the edge of the tray. Then she released them.
So he was already here.
She kept her back to him, her tray level, her feet moving along her route. She was nowhere near him. She was invisible. She was doing her job.
But somewhere in the back of her chest, in the place she kept the notebook and the earrings and the list of everything she was going to build for herself, something registered.
Noted. Filed. Set aside.
She had come here to gather information, and the night had barely started.
*Pay attention,* she told herself. *Everything matters.*
Across the room, beneath the gold-and-burgundy light, the voice that made rooms go quiet said something else — too low now, too far for her to catch. She kept walking. She kept her face still.
The night had barely started, and she hadn't even seen his face yet.
She wasn't sure she needed to.
You've reached the end of this chapter
