She had been in this room for two hours and had not sung a single note.
This was deliberate. The set was finished — had been finished, in all the ways that mattered, since Tuesday. The tonal check had confirmed it. Kim had confirmed it in the way Kim confirmed things, which was to stop suggesting changes and start asking questions about logistics, which meant the music had passed from the territory of *being built* into the territory of *being ready.*
There was nothing left to do with the songs.
What remained was the harder thing: the hours between now and tomorrow, the particular quality of time that collected in the space before a performance and had to be lived through rather than used. She had tried practice and found her body resisting it — not from exhaustion but from a kind of internal wisdom that knew when adding more was subtractive. She had tried the notebook and found she had nothing to write that wasn't circular. She had made tea and drunk half of it and set the rest on the floor beside her.
Now she was sitting with her back against the chair, her legs crossed, looking at the opposite wall, doing the thing she was not good at: waiting.
---
She had performed in a great many contexts and had developed, over years, a reliable taxonomy of pre-performance states. There was the good nervousness — the kind that arrived when the stakes were high and the preparation was solid, the body's way of signaling that it understood the importance of what was coming and was ready to meet it. There was the bad nervousness — the kind that arrived when something was unfinished, when she had not done enough or had done the wrong things, the body's accurate alarm system.
What she was experiencing tonight was neither of those. It was something quieter and more settled, the specific stillness of a thing that had been built as well as she knew how to build it and was now simply waiting to become real.
She trusted the songs. She trusted the work she had done on them. What she did not entirely trust was the version of herself who would stand on the Meridian Stages tomorrow night and find out whether the songs and the work were enough — not because she doubted the preparation, but because she knew that a performance was never only about what you had done before it. It was also about who you were when you walked onto the stage, and who you were was not something you could prepare.
You could only arrive.
Zoe called at eight-seventeen, which Mila had not expected and which she answered on the first ring because Zoe's timing was, as always, inexplicably accurate.
She had not made many friends in Aurora City. She had not, she was honest with herself about this, been in a position to make many friends — the conservatory years had been consuming, the house had not been a place that welcomed people in, and she had moved through her days with a kind of economical focus that left little room for the slow work of knowing someone.
Zoe was the exception. Zoe was the exception in every category she had ever tried to fit her into — she was not a conservatory friend or a neighborhood friend or a circumstantial friend but simply a person who had decided, two years ago at a library, that Mila was worth knowing and had not revisited the decision since.
She picked up on the first ring because Zoe was one of the few people whose voice she was consistently glad to hear.
"I'm not going to ask how you're feeling," Zoe said, "because that's a useless question the night before something important and I respect you too much to ask it."
"Thank you."
"Instead I'm going to tell you about this documentary I've been watching about competitive dog grooming, which is significantly more stressful than I expected."
Mila felt something in her chest unknot. "Tell me."
Zoe told her. For twenty-two minutes they talked about the documentary, about a restaurant near Zoe's apartment that had changed its menu in ways Zoe found personally offensive, about a mutual friend who had decided to take up rock climbing at thirty-one and was texting updates at a frequency that suggested genuine obsession. Mila lay on the floor of Studio 3 and listened and talked back and was, for twenty-two minutes, simply a person having a conversation.
At the end, Zoe said: "You're going to be extraordinary tomorrow. Not because you'll be perfect — because you know why you're doing it."
Mila held that after the call ended. She had heard those words before, in a different voice, in this same room, on a different evening. She did not think it was a coincidence that the people who knew her best had landed on the same truth.
---
She heard the knock at eight fifty-three.
Not the door opening — a knock. Specific, deliberate, the sound of someone who had arrived at a door and chosen to announce themselves rather than simply entering.
She turned. Adrian was on the other side of the glass, his hand still slightly raised from the knock, looking at her with the expression he wore when he had done something he had decided to do and was waiting to see how it landed.
She looked at him through the glass.
He had knocked. In seven weeks of knowing him, of having him appear at this door with and without warning, with and without reasons that made sense on the surface — he had not knocked. Not once. The act was small and the act was enormous.
"Come in," she said.
She had not known, until it happened, that she had been waiting for it.
Not the visit — he had come to this room before, had stood at this glass before, had been a presence in this space on evenings when the building was quiet and the city was doing its patient indifferent thing outside. She had become accustomed to that, had filed it in the category of things that were true about her current life and which she had chosen not to examine.
But the knock was new. The knock was a question — not in the sense of asking permission, but in the sense of offering a choice. He had stood outside the door and knocked rather than opened it, which meant he had considered the act, which meant he had decided something before he arrived.
She had learned enough about Adrian Vance to know that his decisions were not accidental.
She said *come in* and let the implications of the knock sit in the room alongside everything else.
He came in. He looked around the room — at the half-drunk tea, at her position on the floor, at the general evidence of someone who had been sitting with something for a while — and sat down in the chair. Not on the floor. The chair, across from where she was, and he looked at her with the directness she had come to associate with the moments when he had decided to be somewhere and was being there fully.
"Autumn Series is tomorrow," he said.
"I'm aware," she said.
"How are you?"
Not *how is the set* or *are you ready* or any of the twenty professional framings he could have used for that question. Just: how are you. She looked at him for a moment, reading the question for what it was.
"Waiting," she said. "I've done everything I can do. Now I'm just — waiting for it to be time."
He nodded. "The worst part."
"The worst part," she agreed.
---
"Are you scared?" he asked, after a while.
She considered the question seriously. She did not give him the fast answer, the one she would have given most people — *no, I'm prepared, I'm ready.* She sat with it the way she sat with a new phrase in a song, listening for what was actually in it.
"Not scared," she said. "I want it to be worth it. Not to them — I mean, I want that too, I want them to respond. But primarily: I want it to be worthy of the songs. They're — " She stopped, looking for the right word. "They're true. The songs are true. I want the performance to be as true as the songs are."
He was quiet for a moment, looking at her with the expression she had never been able to fully name — not the professional look, not the assessment, something more interior than either.
"I understand that," he said.
They talked for a while after that. Not about tomorrow — they had both, without agreeing to, put tomorrow in another room and were sitting in this one instead.
She asked him how he had started Vance Entertainment. Not the official version — she had read the official version in three different interviews — but the actual version, the granular one, what it had felt like to be twenty-two with a company that wasn't yet a company and a belief that it could be one.
"Terrifying," he said, without hesitation. "And clarifying. I didn't have anything to fall back on, which meant every decision was real. You think more clearly when there's no safety net. Or differently, at least."
"Do you miss it?"
He considered. "I miss the simplicity of it. When the company was three people and a lease, the problem was always concrete. You could hold the whole thing in your head. Now the problems are layered and the solutions have consequences I can't always trace." A pause. "But no. I don't miss it enough to want it back."
"Because of what you built."
"Because of what I'm still building," he said.
She looked at him. He was talking about the company. She was fairly sure he was also, without meaning to, talking about something else.
And she heard, in the way he said it, that he did — not in the placating sense of someone offering comfort but in the specific sense of someone who had stood in their own version of that wanting and recognized the shape of it.
"Do you?" she said. Not a challenge — genuine curiosity. "You're so — certain, usually. About everything."
"I'm certain about decisions," he said. "That's different from not being afraid of them."
She looked at him. He was looking at the window — the city outside, the version of it visible from this floor at this hour, which was quieter and less declarative than the forty-second floor view. More like the city as it actually was, rather than as it performed itself.
---
She had not planned to ask. The question arrived because she was tired of being careful, or because the room had the quality it sometimes had at night of making careful feel like the wrong register.
"Have you ever been afraid?" she said. "Not strategically. Actually afraid — about something that mattered to you personally."
He was still for a moment. She watched him decide something.
"Once," he said. "When someone I had trusted left. Not — the leaving wasn't the thing. The thing was that I had been wrong. I had believed I knew them, had been building a picture of who they were for three years, and the picture was wrong in a way I hadn't let myself see because I didn't want to see it." A pause. "Her name was Selene. She was an artist on my roster. She was also — something else, for a while. And when she left she took things that were easy to replace and left behind the knowledge that I had failed at the thing I thought I was most reliable at: reading people accurately."
The room was very quiet.
"That's what I'm afraid of," he said. "Not loss. Being wrong about someone I've decided to believe in."
Mila looked at him — at his profile, at the city beyond the window, at the particular quality of a man who had just said something true and was sitting in the silence of having said it, not asking for anything in return.
"You're not wrong about me," she said.
He turned to look at her.
Not an argument, not a reassurance. Just the fact, placed in the room: she was saying it was true, and it was, and she meant it to stand on its own without needing him to respond to it. He would carry whatever he would carry. But she wanted him to have that.
He looked at her for a long moment. Something moved in his face that she could not name — not the almost-smile, not the real smile, something deeper than both, something she had not seen before. The expression of a man receiving something he had not known he needed.
He nodded. Once. And did not look away.
---
The silence that came after was not empty.
It was the fullest silence she had been in with another person — full of the seven weeks behind them and the hours ahead and everything that had been said and not said and the particular weight of two people sitting close enough that the space between them required an active choice to maintain.
The studio at night had qualities she had not fully catalogued. The way the recording light on the far wall made a small red point that was the only saturated color in an otherwise low-warm room. The way the city outside was a constant presence without being an intrusion — there but not demanding anything. The way the acoustic treatment on the walls absorbed sound in a way that made even silence feel contained, intentional.
She had spent a great many hours in this room. She had spent them working, thinking, processing, occasionally crying about something she had not allowed herself to cry about elsewhere. The room had accumulated a quality from all of that — not sentimental, just real, the way places became real when you had actually lived in them rather than merely occupied them.
She was aware of him in it the way she was aware of the room itself — as something that had become, without ceremony, part of what this space meant to her.
She was aware that the awareness was no longer something she was managing back.
She was aware of his presence the way she was aware of the key note in a piece of music — not by listening for it directly but by the way everything else organized around it.
She was aware that she was not going to be able to sit here indefinitely. She was aware that she did not want to leave. Both things were true and she held them both and waited to see which one would move first.
She moved first. She unfolded her legs and stood, and the movement brought her to standing closer to him than she had calculated, close enough that she was suddenly, acutely conscious of the distance remaining — not much, the width of a decision.
He stood at the same moment.
Not reaching toward her. Just standing, at the same time, reflexively, as if some agreement had been made in the part of the conversation that didn't use words. They were facing each other in the low light of the studio, the city quiet beyond the window, the distance between them exactly what it was: chosen.
---
"Get some sleep," he said.
His voice was different. Not softer — more present, stripped of the register he wore in the building during the day, the one that kept everything at a functional temperature. This was the voice under that voice.
"You too," she said.
She walked to the door. Her hand was on the frame when she heard — not his footsteps, not yet — just the quality of the silence behind her, the particular stillness of someone who was not moving, who was standing in the room she had just left and not filling it with anything.
She kept walking.
Down the corridor, into the elevator, out of the building into the night air that was cool and unremarkable and entirely indifferent to what had just happened in a studio on the thirty-fifth floor.
She took the bus home. Went upstairs. Lay down on her bed in the dark room with the familiar geometry of her ceiling above her.
Gerald was where he had always been.
She looked at him for a long time. She did not think about tomorrow. She did not think about strategy or preparation or the audience that would be in the Meridian Stages in eighteen hours. She thought about a knock on a door. About the word *once*, said in a room at night. About the distance between two people that had been, for a moment, exactly the width of a decision.
Gerald had been on the ceiling since she moved in. He had been there through three years of meals she had cooked for people who did not thank her and laundry she had folded for people who left it on the table. He had been there through the conservatory years, through the nights she had stayed up reading theory and the nights she had stayed up crying about the unfairness of a world that seemed to have been arranged with everyone else in mind. He had been there on the morning she had signed the contract and on all the mornings since.
She looked at him now and thought: *something has changed.*
Not tomorrow. Not the performance. Something in the shape of things, in the way she understood her own life — the way a song changed when you found the right word in the bridge, the meaning of everything before it shifting slightly, landing somewhere new.
She let herself feel it without taking it apart.
That was new too.
