If you had asked Elsie, five years ago, what she planned to accomplish with the rest of her life, she would have said something like: nothing. Absolutely nothing. Nothing was, in fact, the entire plan, carefully constructed, regularly maintained, and so far executed with what she considered to be flawless precision.
She measured out three drops of feverwort tincture into a glass vial, held it up to the morning light slanting through the shop's grimy window, and allowed herself a small, private moment of pride.
Five years. Five years of waking up in the same narrow bed above the same dusty apothecary in the same forgettable town at the edge of a kingdom most maps didn't bother to label correctly, and in all that time, nothing of consequence had happened to her. No prophecy had unfurled itself in her direction. No long-lost relative had appeared to inform her she was secretly important. No brooding nobleman had glanced at her twice. She had not been kidnapped, cursed, seduced, betrothed, or marked by destiny in any way whatsoever, and she considered every single one of those omissions a personal triumph.
She corked the vial, labeled it in her careful, unremarkable handwriting, and set it on the shelf with the others.
"Elsie." Old Bren's voice carried from the back room, gravelly with the particular irritation he reserved for mornings before he'd had his second cup of chicory. "Did you finish the willowbark order or are you up there composing poetry again?"
"Finished an hour ago," she called back, which was true, and also: "No poetry today, just my will to live," which was a joke he wouldn't get and she didn't expect him to.
Bren shuffled into the front room a moment later, squinting at the shelves with the air of a man perpetually convinced something had been moved without his permission. He was sixty-one, built like a barrel that had given up on standing up straight, and possessed exactly two settings: irritated, and asleep. Elsie had worked for him for three years now, ever since the previous apothecary's apprentice had run off with a traveling tinker and left a vacancy that nobody else in Bramblehollow had wanted badly enough to learn the difference between feverwort and foxglove.
She had wanted it very badly indeed. A shop with no windows facing the main road, hours that kept her indoors and out of conversation, and an employer too cantankerous to ask personal questions — it was, by her own private rubric, close to perfect.
"You moved the betony again," Bren said, accusingly, to the shelf rather than to her.
"I alphabetized it. Six months ago. You've mentioned this before."
"Don't like alphabetizing. Like knowing where things are."
"Those are the same thing, Bren."
He grunted, which in Bren's particular dialect meant *you may be right but I will not be conceding the point aloud*, and disappeared again into the back room to do whatever it was he did back there for the first two hours of every day, which Elsie had long since stopped trying to determine. It was, she'd decided early on, one of the underappreciated luxuries of an unremarkable life: nobody expected you to be interesting, and in exchange, you were under no obligation to find anyone else interesting either. They simply coexisted, like furniture that occasionally spoke.
Most people, she suspected, did not wake up each morning and tally their accomplishments in terms of disasters avoided. Most people wanted things to happen to them. Most people wanted to be chosen, swept up, made special.
Elsie was not most people. Elsie had read the book.
Not this book, exactly — not anymore, not really, since the years had sanded most of the details down to vague impressions and a handful of names she wished she could forget — but she had read it, once, in a life so distant now that it sometimes felt like something she'd invented to amuse herself on long, dull afternoons. A campus library. A worn paperback with a cracked spine. A plot she had skimmed half-asleep at two in the morning because a friend had insisted it was good, and it probably had been good, for people who liked watching a luminous chosen heroine save the world while everyone around her either helped her, loved her, or died spectacularly to raise the emotional stakes.
She had been the dying-spectacularly type. A name mentioned twice. A face with no particular features. The sort of character a reader's eyes slid right over on their way to the people who actually mattered.
She remembered, with the strange clarity certain useless things retained while more important memories faded, the exact paragraph that had sealed her fate the first time around — a single line, tucked between two scenes she'd actually cared about, informing the reader that a nameless attendant in the eastern wing had been found dead the morning after the masquerade, collateral in a plot she hadn't even been present to witness directly. She remembered thinking, half-asleep, *poor thing*, and turning the page without slowing down.
She had not expected, two months later, to wake up wearing that exact same nameless attendant's face, in a body that was not quite hers and not quite not hers, with a death already scheduled somewhere in a future she could feel coming like weather.
The first few weeks had been, in retrospect, the closest she'd ever come to actual panic. She had spent them doing the things people in her position were supposed to do — frantically trying to remember every detail of the plot, mapping out every named character and every major event, trying to determine exactly when and how and why she was destined to die so she could engineer some clever, dramatic escape.
And then, somewhere around week six, lying awake in a borrowed bed in a borrowed life, she had arrived at a much simpler realization: she didn't need to outsmart the plot. She needed to leave it. The attendant died because she was in the room. The solution, then, was staggeringly obvious — never be in the room. Never be anywhere the room might eventually be. Build a life so far from every named character, every prophesied event, every castle and temple and battlefield, that the story would have no earthly reason to remember she existed at all.
It had felt, at the time, like the single most sensible decision she had ever made in either of her lives. Five years later, she still believed that, with the smug, settled conviction of a theory thoroughly tested.
So she had run. Quietly, sensibly, without any dramatics that might have attracted attention. She had slipped out of the role assigned to her like a coat that didn't fit, put as much geography as she could between herself and every major event she dimly remembered, and built, brick by careful brick, a life so unremarkable that the story itself would lose interest in her.
It had worked. It was still working. She intended for it to keep working until she died of something boring, like old age, in a chair, with a cup of tea going cold beside her.
That was another rule, one of the early ones, scrawled into the back pages of a notebook she kept hidden beneath a loose floorboard: keep your humor private. Funny people got noticed. Noticed people got remembered. Remembered people ended up, eventually, standing in the wrong room at the wrong moment, mattering to someone who mattered to the plot.
She had three rules, total, refined over five years of trial and a truly alarming amount of error in the first six months. They were, in order of importance:
One: be forgettable. Not ugly, not strange, not stupid — simply unremarkable, the kind of face people struggled to describe an hour after meeting it.
Two: be useless to anyone important. Skills that solved interesting problems attracted interesting people. Skills that solved boring problems — restocking shelves, measuring tinctures, remembering which farmer owed what — kept you exactly where you wanted to be, which was nowhere anyone was looking.
Three, and most important: never, under any circumstances, go anywhere near a capital city, a royal court, a temple, a battlefield, or anyone with a title longer than "innkeeper."
She had broken none of these rules in five years. She considered this her single greatest achievement, greater than anything she'd managed in either of her lives, and she thought about it now with the specific contentment of someone counting money they'd earned honestly.
The rest of the morning continued in the manner mornings generally did. A farmer's wife came in for something to settle her youngest's stomach, paid in eggs because coin was tight after the harvest, and stayed long enough to complain, cheerfully and at length, about her eldest's choice of suitor. A boy from the mill came for bandages and left without them twice before finally remembering what he'd been sent to buy. The town crier passed by the window on his usual circuit, calling out nothing more dramatic than the week's grain prices and a reminder that the autumn fair would be held, as always, on the green behind the chapel.
Elsie absorbed all of it with the placid, half-listening attention of someone watching the same play for the hundredth time, content in the knowledge that nothing in this particular performance would ever require her to step onto the stage. She liked the farmer's wife. She liked the mill boy's forgetfulness. She liked, more than she would ever have admitted aloud, the specific texture of a life built entirely from small, repeatable, harmless things — the weight of a measuring spoon, the smell of dried chamomile, the particular creak of the third floorboard from the door that told her someone was coming in before the bell even rang.
It was, by any reasonable standard, a small life. She had built it that way on purpose, brick by careful brick, and she guarded its smallness the way other people guarded fortunes.
The shop bell rang again, properly this time. Elsie composed her face into its default setting — pleasant, blank, instantly forgettable — and went to see who'd come in.
It was only Mira from the bakery two doors down, her apron still dusted with flour, here for her mother's joint salve and to deliver, as she always did, every piece of news Bramblehollow considered worth repeating, which was generally none of it.
"You hear about the Hendricks' place?" Mira said, setting coins on the counter without being asked, because she'd been buying the same salve for two years and the routine no longer required negotiation.
"Hear what about it," Elsie said, already reaching for the jar.
"Three goats dead in one night. No wolf marks, no nothing. Just dead, like someone scooped the life right out of them." Mira shuddered with the particular relish of someone delivering bad news from a safe distance. "And the well out past the mill's gone dry. Just like that. No drought, no nothing, just dry."
Elsie kept her hands steady on the jar lid. This was, she reminded herself, exactly the kind of conversation that meant absolutely nothing. Strange things happened in border towns. Animals died of disease, of poison, of bad luck. Wells ran dry for a hundred mundane reasons that had nothing to do with anything.
"Probably poachers spooked something through," she said, which was a perfectly reasonable thing to say and also a complete fabrication, because something cold and unhelpful in the back of her skull had already started doing the thing it sometimes did — sifting through five-year-old memories like a woman searching a drawer for a key she'd hoped never to need again.
"That's what my da said too," Mira agreed, apparently satisfied, and went on to a much longer and more interesting story about the miller's daughter and a traveling merchant, which Elsie listened to with every appearance of attention while a small, traitorous part of her mind kept circling back.
*Goats dying with no mark on them. A well gone dry overnight.*
She knew — vaguely, distantly, in the watered-down way she knew most things about the world she'd landed in — that there had once been talk, in the book, of an old seal somewhere in the north. A barrier between this world and something underneath it, something better left underneath. She remembered it the way she remembered most plot details now: as a shape without edges, a fact she'd absorbed once and mostly let go of, on the theory that whatever it meant for the heroine of the story, it had nothing to do with her.
She had built an entire life on that theory. She intended to keep building it.
Mira left eventually, salve in hand, gossip exhausted. Elsie went back to her tinctures, her ledgers, her small unremarkable Tuesday, and told herself, with the firm and slightly too-insistent tone of someone arguing with their own nerves, that dead goats were dead goats and dry wells were dry wells and none of it — *none* of it — was a sign of anything at all.
By midafternoon she'd half convinced herself, and by the time she closed the shop's shutters against the early autumn chill, she'd nearly forgotten about it entirely, the way she'd trained herself to forget most things that threatened to matter.
---
It was a good life, she thought, climbing the narrow stairs to her room above the shop. Small. Quiet. Entirely her own. She lit the single candle on her windowsill, more from habit than need — the moon was bright enough tonight to read by — and sat on the edge of her bed to do the thing she did most nights, which was nothing at all, on purpose, with great satisfaction.
Below the third floorboard from the wall, under a layer of dust she reapplied for authenticity, was the notebook. She didn't take it out often anymore — there was less need to, these days, since most of her rules had long since become instinct rather than recitation — but something about the goats, the well, the specific flavor of unease Mira's gossip had left behind, made her want to see the words written down again, in her own hand, as if rereading them might make the world hold still.
*Rule One: be forgettable.*
*Rule Two: be useless to anyone important.*
*Rule Three: stay away from capitals, courts, temples, battlefields, and titles.*
Beneath them, in a slightly different ink, added perhaps a year in: *Rule Four: when in doubt, assume it has nothing to do with you. It almost never does.*
She traced the last line with one finger and thought, not for the first time, that there was something almost funny about a girl who'd spent her first life reading about chosen ones and her second life doing everything in her power to make absolutely sure she would never be chosen for anything. If anyone ever wrote *her* story down, it would be the dullest book in the history of two worlds, and she would frame the manuscript.
She put the notebook back, replaced the floorboard, blew out the candle, and told herself — firmly, the way you tell yourself things you mostly believe — that tomorrow would be exactly as uneventful as today, and the day after that, and the one after that, stretching out ahead of her in a long, comfortable, blessedly unremarkable line.
For a while, lying in the dark with the shutters rattling faintly in the wind, she let herself simply feel it: the specific, hard-won satisfaction of a life that asked nothing of her and offered, in return, the privilege of being left entirely alone. She thought of the heroine she dimly remembered from the book — golden, luminous, beloved, doomed to matter whether she wanted to or not — and felt something that was not quite pity and not quite relief, but sat somewhere comfortably between the two.
*Better you than me,* she thought, with real warmth, the way you might think it about a friend who'd taken a job you'd been glad to turn down. *Good luck with all that.*
And yet — just for a moment, just at the edge of sleep, where the rules she'd built her life around grew thin enough to see through — she let herself imagine, briefly and without permission, what it might be like to matter to someone the way the heroine of the book mattered to everyone around her. Not the prophecy. Not the destiny. Just the part where someone noticed you'd gone quiet, and asked why, and didn't leave when you couldn't explain it.
It was a useless thought, the kind she usually caught and discarded before it could take root. Tonight it lingered a little longer than usual before she let it go.
She fell asleep almost smiling.
---
The dream, when it came, didn't announce itself as a dream. That was the worst kind.
She was standing somewhere that had no walls and no floor and somehow still felt enclosed, the way the inside of a held breath feels enclosed, and in front of her there was a door. Not a door like the one downstairs, scarred and ordinary and smelling faintly of feverwort — a door cut from old grey stone, taller than seemed reasonable, veined through with something that pulsed faintly, like a heartbeat seen through skin.
The stone was crying. She understood this without being told, the way you understand things in dreams, absolutely and without evidence: dark lines ran down the door's surface, too slow and too deliberate to be water, and somewhere behind the stone something vast turned over in its sleep and exhaled.
*There you are.*
The voice didn't come from anywhere. It came from everywhere, low and patient and entirely too interested, and it did not say *Elsie.*
It said another name — a name with edges to it, a name that fit her the way her own skin fit her, which made no sense at all, because her own skin had never felt anything but borrowed.
*There you are. We've been waiting such a long, long time.*
She woke up sitting bolt upright with her heart slamming against her ribs and one hand raised in front of her face, fingers spread, as if she'd been reaching for something in her sleep.
Her palm was glowing.
Not brightly — a thin, silvery thread of light tracing the lines of her skin like something seen at the very edge of vision, there and not there, the kind of light you could convince yourself you'd imagined if you only looked away fast enough.
She looked away fast enough. By the time she made herself look back, her hand was just a hand again, pale in the moonlight, perfectly ordinary, faintly damp with the kind of sweat that came from nightmares and nothing else.
For a long moment she sat very still, listening to her own breathing slow, and ran through, with great determination, every reasonable explanation available to her. She'd been thinking about the well and the goats before bed — that explained the dream's particular flavor of dread. The light had been moonlight on damp skin, nothing more, a trick the eye played when startled awake at an unkind hour. She had been having ordinary nightmares for five straight years, the perfectly understandable inheritance of a girl who'd once read a book about the end of her own life and then had to go on living in it.
None of this was a sign. None of this had anything to do with her.
*It almost never does,* she reminded herself, in the voice of Rule Four, and pulled the blanket back up to her chin with hands that were absolutely, completely steady, thank you very much.
She did not get up to relight the candle. She did not take out the notebook to add a new line. She lay in the dark instead, listening to the shutters rattle, and told herself — with the particular, fierce insistence of someone protecting something precious — that tomorrow would be exactly as uneventful as every day before it, and that whatever had cracked open in the dark behind that stone door, whatever ancient, patient thing had called her by a name she'd never owned, it was a problem for someone else. Some heroine with golden hair and a destiny built for the occasion.
Not her. Never her. She had worked far too hard to make absolutely certain it would never be her.
Outside, far to the north, past three kingdoms and a mountain range she had never seen and never intended to, an old seal carved into living stone shed another thin, dark tear, and somewhere beneath it, something that had been sleeping for twenty years turned its attention, slowly and with great satisfaction, toward a small, forgettable town at the edge of the map.
Elsie slept on, blissfully unaware, dreaming — for the first time in five years — not of nothing at all, but of a door.
You've reached the end of this chapter
If you had asked Elsie, five years ago, what she planned to accomplish with the rest of her life, she would have said something like: nothing. Absolutely nothing.
