Several days passed without further incident, and Elsie found herself, gradually and against her own better judgment, beginning to believe that the matter of the flickering ward had quietly resolved itself in her favor. The east-wing corridor remained ordinary on every subsequent visit, the lamp burning steady, her own pulse behaving with the dull, reliable predictability she'd once taken entirely for granted before arriving at Caldreth. Theon had not returned to the dispensary. No fresh summons had appeared demanding her presence before any pattern-keeper. The household's general chaos, if anything, seemed to be swallowing the small mystery whole, the way it swallowed every smaller concern that wasn't directly tied to the ceremony's looming preparations.
She allowed herself, cautiously, the smallest measure of relief at this — the particular, fragile hope of someone who'd survived several near misses and wanted very badly to believe the danger had finally passed, even while some older, wearier part of her continued cataloguing the lack of resolution as exactly that: a lack of resolution, not a genuine conclusion. She had learned, across five years, that the most dangerous moments were rarely the loud, obvious ones. They were the quiet stretches afterward, when a person allowed themselves to relax precisely because nothing had gone wrong yet.
She kept herself busy, in the meantime, with the ordinary rhythms of the dispensary's increasingly hectic schedule — supply requisitions multiplying daily as more guests arrived ahead of the ceremony, Hesketh's increasingly clipped instructions, Birdie's increasingly exhausted gossip about the kitchens' ongoing struggle to keep pace. It was, in its own strange way, a comfort, the sheer volume of practical work leaving her considerably less room than usual to dwell on the question of exactly how much longer her careful, narrow truce with this household's two most dangerous variables could realistically hold.
The pattern-keeper himself appeared on the eighth day, without warning, while Elsie was midway through her morning delivery to the sickroom corridor.
---
He was an elderly man, stooped and silver-haired, dressed in robes so plain and so thoroughly stained with years of careful work that Elsie would have taken him for a particularly senior groundskeeper if not for the small, intricate brass instrument he carried, considerably more elaborate than the surveyor's simple needle-and-glass device, set with several small dials that hummed faintly as he moved it slowly along the corridor's stone wall. He worked with the particular unhurried thoroughness of a man who had spent decades trusting his own methods over anyone else's impatience, pausing periodically to consult a worn leather notebook he carried tucked beneath one arm, comparing readings against notes Elsie suspected dated back considerably further than her own short time in this household.
He paid Elsie no attention whatsoever, absorbed entirely in his careful, methodical sweep of the corridor's length, muttering occasionally to himself in the particular distracted way of a man who'd spent decades alone with his own specialized expertise and had long since stopped expecting conversation from anyone who didn't share it. Elsie delivered her tray to Mrs. Adare, exchanged the usual brief pleasantries, and made her way back past him with considerably more confidence than she'd carried through this corridor in over a week — because the instrument's dials, she noted with private, careful relief, remained entirely steady throughout her passage, registering nothing at all.
It was, exactly as she'd hoped, confirmation that her earlier hypothesis had held. Whatever reaction lived in her blood required Castian's specific presence to wake, not the corridor itself, not the lamp, not anything a careful instrument could measure in his absence. She walked the rest of her round with a lightness she hadn't felt in over a week, allowing herself, just this once, the small indulgence of believing a problem might actually be behind her.
---
She learned the pattern-keeper's verdict secondhand, the following afternoon, in the particular roundabout way most household information eventually reached the dispensary — Birdie, returning from an errand near the steward's office, reporting with her usual breathless enthusiasm that the ward inspection had turned up nothing whatsoever.
"Old Master Verrin spent half a day up there with his instruments and found absolutely nothing wrong," Birdie reported, dropping into her usual chair with the satisfied air of someone delivering genuinely good news. "Steward's relieved — apparently there'd been some talk of needing a full reweaving if the ward turned out to be failing, which would've meant closing off half the east wing during the ceremony preparations, which would've been an absolute disaster given everything else going on."
"So that's settled, then," Elsie said, with the careful, measured relief of someone genuinely pleased about household logistics rather than someone who'd spent over a week privately terrified of exactly this investigation.
"Mostly. Theon's apparently noted it as unresolved rather than closed — something about wanting to keep an eye on it if it happens again, rather than writing it off entirely as an old ward simply wearing thin. But for now, it's nobody's emergency." Birdie shrugged, already moving on to some other piece of household gossip, entirely unaware of how much weight her casual summary had just lifted off Elsie's shoulders, and how much weight, in the same breath, it had quietly left hanging there instead.
*Unresolved rather than closed.* Elsie turned the phrase over with the same careful attention she gave most things Theon's name was attached to, and found, beneath the genuine relief of having survived the investigation, a thin, persistent thread of unease that refused to fully dissolve. A man who noticed things rarely settled for *unresolved* as a permanent state. He had simply, for the moment, run out of evidence worth pursuing further — which meant, by the same logic, that any future evidence would land considerably harder than the first had.
---
The crisis arrived that same afternoon, with no warning at all, in the form of a household runner arriving breathless at the dispensary's door.
"Mrs. Adare's asking for fever medicine, urgent," the runner gasped out, barely pausing for breath. "The household's relation — Emeric — his fever's spiked badly, worse than usual. She says it's not responding to the standing tonic."
Hesketh, buried to her elbows in the ceremony's escalating preparations, looked up from her own work with the particular sharp, assessing focus of a woman calculating the fastest possible solution to an urgent problem. "Elsie, you know that case better than anyone else in this room at this point. Go. Use your judgment on the dosage adjustment — I trust you to get it right faster than I could walk you through it from here."
It was, Elsie understood even as she gathered the necessary supplies with hands that had gone instantly, efficiently steady, an extraordinary degree of trust to extend to an assistant of six weeks' standing — the kind of trust that would have terrified her, under any other circumstance, for exactly the attention it might draw. There was no time, just now, to feel anything about that beyond simple, grateful relief that someone needed her competence more urgently than they needed her invisibility.
She moved through the corridors at something close to a run, fever protocols assembling themselves automatically in her mind the way they'd assembled themselves a hundred times before in Bren's shop — willow for the fever itself, a careful measure of feverfew to ease whatever pain accompanied it, cooling compresses if the fever had climbed high enough to warrant the risk, all of it calculated and recalculated as she moved, refined against the specific details Mrs. Adare had given the runner and the considerably more extensive history she'd assembled herself across weeks of careful, attentive deliveries.
---
She arrived at the sickroom door at almost precisely the same moment Castian did, both of them having been summoned by the same urgent news, both of them moving with the same controlled, focused haste of people who understood exactly how quickly a fever could turn dangerous if mismanaged.
There was no time, this time, for careful preparation, for rehearsed sentences in front of a cracked mirror, for any of the elaborate, anxious choreography she'd once built around avoiding exactly this proximity. He looked at her with none of the cataloguing, suspicious attention she remembered from their first encounter — only the raw, unguarded focus of a man whose entire careful composure had cracked open under the weight of genuine fear.
"How bad," he said, the words clipped almost to fragments, already moving past her into the room.
"I won't know until I see him," Elsie said, following close behind, her voice pitched into the calm, professional register she'd built across five years of exactly this kind of crisis. "Tell me what's changed since this morning's dose."
Mrs. Adare, white-faced and visibly relieved at the sight of someone competent arriving, rattled off the details — the fever's sudden, steep climb over the past hour, a restlessness in the patient that hadn't been present at any previous flare, a clamminess to his skin that worried her considerably more than the temperature alone.
Elsie knelt beside the narrow bed, checking the unconscious young man's pulse and breathing with the same careful, methodical precision she'd have applied to any patient, deliberately not allowing herself, in this exact moment, to dwell on the fact that the figure in front of her was Emeric, was the single most carefully guarded secret in this entire household, was the reason a powerful man's voice had once cracked with exhaustion through a gap in a study door.
"Fever's high but not dangerously so yet," she said, working quickly, mixing the willow and feverfew in proportions she adjusted slightly upward from the standing order, based on the fresh information Mrs. Adare had given her. "I'm increasing the willow measure to account for the spike, and adding a cooling compress to bring the temperature down faster than the tonic alone would manage. This should start working within the half hour."
She worked with the particular focused efficiency she'd perfected across years of similar emergencies, hands moving through the familiar sequence of preparation without needing her conscious attention, which left her free to register, peripherally, the way Castian had positioned himself at the foot of the bed — close enough to see everything, far enough to avoid interfering, the careful, restrained posture of a man forcing himself to trust someone else's hands with the thing he cared about most. She had seen variations of that exact posture before, in worried parents and frightened spouses crowding Bren's small shop over the years, the universal shape of helplessness in the face of someone else's illness. She had never, until this exact moment, expected to recognize it on him.
---
"You're certain that dosage is correct," Castian said, the question arriving for the second time in as many minutes, his voice carrying none of the cold, contained authority she'd grown familiar with — only the raw, repetitive anxiety of someone checking a fact he already knew the answer to simply because checking it again felt marginally less helpless than doing nothing at all.
"I'm certain," Elsie said, without looking up from her work, keeping her tone steady and unhurried, the particular calm she'd learned, across five years, was considerably more useful to a frightened room than any amount of visible urgency. "I've adjusted for his weight and the severity of this spike specifically. I wouldn't give it to him otherwise."
"And if it doesn't work as quickly as you expect."
"Then we adjust again, and I'll tell you exactly what we're adjusting and why, the same way I'm telling you now." She finished preparing the compress, pressed it carefully against Emeric's forehead, and finally looked up at him directly, meeting the raw, unguarded fear in his expression with the same steady, professional reassurance she'd have offered any worried family member. "He's in good hands, my lord. I've handled fevers considerably worse than this one. Let me work, and I'll tell you the moment anything changes."
He held her gaze for a long moment, something in his expression shifting, slowly, from raw panic toward something closer to reluctant, exhausted trust, and then, without further argument, stepped back to give her the space her work required, the particular concession of a man who recognized, even through his own fear, that interference would cost more than it could possibly help.
---
The fever broke within the half hour, exactly as Elsie had predicted, Emeric's breathing settling into something considerably steadier, the dangerous flush slowly fading from his skin under the compress's continued application. She checked his pulse once more, satisfied herself that the worst of the crisis had genuinely passed, and allowed herself, finally, the long, careful exhale she'd been holding back since the moment she'd first knelt beside his bed.
"He's stable," she said, sitting back. "The fever should continue to ease over the next few hours. I'll want to check on him again this evening, just to be certain, but I don't expect any further spike tonight."
Castian had not moved from where he'd stepped back, watching the entire process with the particular, focused attention of a man who'd clearly spent considerable time learning to read his brother's condition through every visible sign available to him. Something in his posture eased, visibly, at her words — the controlled, careful authority he carried everywhere else in this household finally, briefly, giving way to simple, exhausted relief.
"Thank you," he said, and then, after a pause long enough that Elsie understood he was deciding, deliberately, whether to say anything further. "I — was afraid. More than the situation perhaps warranted, given your assessment. I haven't quite learned how to separate the fear from the actual severity, even after this many years."
It was, Elsie understood immediately, an admission that cost him considerably more than the words themselves suggested — not the cold, measured Lord Regent who'd questioned her in the corridor, not the careful, composed man who'd exchanged formal pleasantries with his betrothed at the reception, but something rawer and considerably more human, offered without any visible calculation about how it might be received.
"That's not a failure, my lord," she said, gently, with none of her usual careful deflection. "That's simply what it looks like to love someone whose health you can't fully control. I don't think there's a version of caring about a person that doesn't include being afraid for them, sometimes more than the moment actually requires."
---
He studied her for a long moment after that, with an expression she couldn't entirely categorize — not the cataloguing suspicion of their first encounter, not the brief, formal acknowledgment of the reception, but something quieter and considerably more direct, the particular attention of a man genuinely curious about the person standing in front of him rather than the anomaly she represented.
"How long have you actually been with this household," he asked, and something in the phrasing — *actually*, rather than the simple, procedural *how long have you been with the household* he'd asked in the corridor — told her, with a small, unsteady jolt, that he was not asking the question for Theon's investigation this time. He was asking, simply, because he wanted to know.
Elsie opened her mouth to give the same careful, rehearsed answer she'd given a dozen times since arriving — six weeks, dispensary assistant, nothing more — and found, for one suspended, uncertain moment, that she genuinely did not know which version of herself was supposed to answer: the careful, forgettable dispensary girl who'd spent five years perfecting exactly this kind of safe, minimal honesty, or the woman who had just spent the last half hour standing beside him through the most frightening moment of his week, and who owed him, perhaps, something considerably truer than a rehearsed deflection.
She thought, in the half-second the silence allowed her, of every careful rule she'd built across five years specifically to prevent a moment exactly like this one from ever arriving — a powerful man asking a simple, personal question, genuinely curious, with no investigation behind it, no threat attached, nothing except the plain, dangerous fact of wanting to know her a little better than the official record allowed. She had no rule that told her how to answer that kind of question honestly without unraveling everything else she'd built to survive it.
"Six weeks, my lord," she said, finally, settling on the safer answer, the one that protected considerably more than it revealed, and watched something subtle shift in his expression — not disappointment, exactly, but the particular, quiet recognition of a man who'd asked a question expecting a careful answer and had received, predictably, exactly that.
"Six weeks," he repeated, quietly, as though testing the number against some private calculation of his own. "You've adapted to this household considerably faster than that timeframe would generally allow."
"I had good reason to learn quickly," Elsie said, which was, in its own careful way, considerably truer than anything else she'd told him so far, though she offered it with the same practiced lightness she'd have used for any harmless deflection.
He did not press further. He glanced once more at his brother, satisfied himself that the worst had genuinely passed, and inclined his head toward her — not the brief, formal gesture from the reception, but something marginally warmer, the particular acknowledgment of a man genuinely grateful rather than merely correct in his manners.
"I won't keep you from your other duties," he said. "Thank you, again. Properly, this time."
He left not long after, and Elsie remained kneeling beside Emeric's bed for a moment longer than strictly necessary, listening to the boy's steady, even breathing, and turning over the considerable distance between the man who had walked into this room and the man who had just walked out of it — a distance she had apparently helped close, in some small way, without entirely meaning to.
