A week passed since the conversation with Lady Isolde, and Elsie found herself doing something she hadn't quite noticed she'd stopped doing — checking, automatically, every time her errands carried her near the east wing, for some sign of Castian's presence, and feeling, when she found none, something closer to a small, deflating disappointment than the careful relief Rule Six had once promised her.
She had not gone looking for him. She wanted, examining the distinction with the same careful honesty she'd applied to the notebook entry she hadn't crossed out, to be precise about that much at least — she had not engineered a single excuse, had not lingered near his usual corridors, had not done anything that would have looked, to an outside observer, like anything other than ordinary, diligent work. But the careful, active avoidance that had once defined every single one of her movements through this household had quietly, somewhere in the past week, become something closer to simple absence of effort in either direction. She no longer steered away from him. She also no longer steered toward him. She had arrived, without quite choosing the destination, at a strange, unstable middle ground that felt considerably more dangerous than either extreme.
She had spent considerable time, in the quiet hours between tasks, trying to locate the precise moment this shift had occurred, the same way she'd once traced every other unexplained change back to a specific cause. She could not find one. It had simply happened, gradually, across weeks of small accumulated proximities — the corridor, the reception, the fever, Isolde's careful warning — each one chipping away, without her quite noticing the cumulative cost, at the absolute, uncomplicated certainty that had once made avoiding him feel like the simplest decision in the world.
She was still turning this uncomfortable observation over, returning from a supply errand to the outer storehouse on an overcast evening, when the sky opened without warning.
---
The rain arrived all at once, the particular violent, drenching downpour that gave a person no useful warning and no reasonable chance to outrun it, and Elsie, caught in the open courtyard between the storehouse and the main keep with no cloak and an armful of supplies she very much did not want ruined, made a dash for the nearest shelter she could see — a narrow, covered walkway running along the courtyard's edge, its low roof offering just enough protection to keep the worst of the deluge off her head and shoulders.
She arrived breathless, soaked through to the shoulders despite the short distance, and pressed herself against the wall beneath the overhang with the particular undignified relief of someone who'd narrowly avoided a considerably worse soaking. The supplies, mercifully, had survived intact, tucked protectively against her chest the entire dash across the courtyard. She wrung a little water from her sleeve, watched the rain hammer down across the courtyard's flagstones with the particular distant fascination of someone enjoying the spectacle now that she'd successfully escaped its worst effects, and allowed herself a small, private moment of relief at the simple, uncomplicated luck of having found shelter at all.
She had not been sheltering there for more than a minute or two when a second figure appeared at the walkway's far end, moving at the same hurried, undignified pace she'd just abandoned, equally drenched, equally without a cloak.
It was, she understood with a sinking, immediate certainty even before she made out his face clearly through the rain, exactly the kind of coincidence her entire careful, watchful existence at Caldreth had been specifically designed to prevent.
---
Castian arrived under the overhang a few feet from where she stood, shaking water from his sleeves with the particular brisk irritation of a man who clearly had considerably more important things to be doing than standing in a downpour, and it took him a visible moment — longer than she expected, given how thoroughly he'd cataloged her in every previous encounter — to register exactly who else had taken shelter beside him.
"Ah," he said, when recognition finally landed, with an expression that suggested he was doing the same rapid, uncomfortable calculation she'd been doing for the past week — weighing the complete absence of any official reason for this encounter against the simple, undeniable fact of it happening anyway. "You."
"My lord," Elsie said, with a small, formal incline of her head that felt considerably more absurd given the circumstances — both of them soaked, both of them sheltering under the same narrow strip of roof, no tray of medicine or sick room emergency between them to justify the proximity this time.
A long, awkward silence settled, filled only by the rain's steady drumming overhead and the distant rumble of thunder somewhere beyond the keep's walls. Elsie kept her gaze fixed on the rain falling beyond the overhang's edge, the particular careful, deliberate not-looking she'd perfected across weeks of practice, and found, despite her best efforts, that she was considerably more aware of his presence three feet away than the situation warranted. She catalogued, almost against her own will, the particular details proximity afforded her that distance usually didn't — the way water had darkened his hair, plastered it close against his skull in a way that made him look, briefly, considerably younger and considerably less composed than the careful, controlled figure she'd grown accustomed to; the faint, visible exhaustion around his eyes that no amount of formal bearing entirely disguised, even now.
She wondered, standing there in the rain-soaked silence, whether he was doing the same careful cataloguing of her, and decided, on balance, that the question was considerably more dangerous to dwell on than the silence itself.
---
"How are you finding the household," he said, eventually, breaking the silence with a question that caught her entirely off guard — not the cold, cataloguing inquiry of their first encounter, not the worried, fragmented questions of the fever crisis, but something closer to ordinary, awkward small talk, the particular stiff, unpracticed attempt of a man who clearly did not engage in this kind of conversation often enough to make it sound natural.
"Well enough, my lord," Elsie said, and then, when the silence threatened to swallow the conversation entirely, added, with rather more honesty than her usual careful deflections allowed, "Busier than I expected, given the ceremony preparations. But the work suits me."
"You came from somewhere considerably smaller, I imagine. A household this size must feel like a significant change." It was, she noted, a question phrased to avoid the actual question — not *where are you from*, which might have required an answer she'd have to construct carefully, but something gentler, an opening rather than a demand.
"A border town. Small enough that everyone knew everyone's business within a week of arriving." She allowed herself a small, genuine smile at the memory, the particular fond exasperation she still carried for Bramblehollow's relentless gossip. "Caldreth's considerably more anonymous, by comparison. Easier to disappear into, in some ways."
"Do you miss it?" The question arrived simply, without any of the careful weight his previous questions had carried, and Elsie found herself answering before she'd fully decided whether the honest answer was wise to give.
"Some of it. The shop I worked in. The man who ran it — gruff, terrible at expressing affection, better at it than he knew." She paused, surprised at how easily the words had come, how little careful calculation had gone into choosing them. "I didn't expect to miss any of it as much as I do."
"What did the shop sell?"
"Tinctures, mostly. Common remedies, things any small town needed. I alphabetized his shelves once, without asking, and he complained about it for the better part of a year while never once putting anything back out of order." She found herself smiling again, more fully this time, the particular easy warmth of describing something genuinely fond rather than calculating exactly how much truth a question deserved. "I think he liked it more than he let on. He's not the sort of man who says things plainly."
"That sounds," Castian said, after a pause, "like a particular kind of loyalty. The sort that doesn't announce itself." There was something careful in the observation, something that suggested he recognized the shape of it from somewhere closer than mere idle curiosity.
---
It was, Elsie understood somewhere in the middle of the exchange, an entirely unprecedented conversation — not a single question about wards, about Emeric, about anything that touched the careful, dangerous architecture of secrets she usually had to navigate around every word she offered him. He was simply, apparently, making conversation, the way two strangers sheltering from the same storm might make conversation anywhere else in the world, and the sheer, uncomplicated ordinariness of it disoriented her considerably more than any of his previous, sharper interrogations had managed.
He glanced over at her, at some point in the lull that followed, with an expression she hadn't seen on him before — not the cold authority of the corridor, not the raw fear of the sickroom, but something quieter, more observational, the particular attention of a man genuinely looking at the person in front of him rather than the puzzle she represented.
"You're soaked through," he said, with the abrupt, practical bluntness of someone redirecting a conversation that had wandered somewhere he hadn't quite intended it to go, and before she could offer any reasonable protest, he'd unfastened his own outer coat — heavy, dark wool, considerably warmer than anything she'd have access to — and settled it, with a particular awkward, unpracticed gesture, around her shoulders.
---
"My lord, you don't need—" she began, the protest arriving on pure reflex, the same instinct that had kept her carefully distant from any unnecessary kindness for five years.
"You'll catch a chill standing in wet wool for however long this rain lasts," he said, in the same brisk, practical tone, already stepping back to a more comfortable distance, the particular awkward overcorrection of a man uncertain whether the gesture had been welcome and choosing, regardless, not to dwell on the uncertainty. "It's a coat, not a kindness requiring an extensive negotiation."
Elsie pulled the coat closer around her shoulders despite herself, the fabric warm from his body and considerably heavier than her own thin dispensary uniform, and felt, beneath the warmth, the low, familiar hum she'd come to associate with proximity to him — gentler this time, steadier, nothing like the sharp, startling jolt of their first encounter or the smaller echo at the reception. Simply warmth, ordinary and undramatic, the ambient heat of one person standing near another in the cold.
She found, oddly, that the absence of anything supernatural unsettled her considerably more than its presence usually did. *This is just him,* she thought, watching the rain continue its steady fall beyond the overhang's edge. *Not the anomaly. Not the danger I've spent five years cataloguing. Just a man who gave me his coat because he didn't want me catching a chill.*
She reminded herself, with rather less conviction than the thought deserved, that this changed absolutely nothing about who he was, what story he belonged to, or what every careful rule she'd ever written had been built specifically to prevent. *Stay away from him.* She had written that sentence in this exact notebook, more than once, and crossed it out exactly as many times, and standing here now in his borrowed coat, she understood, with a clarity that left no room for further denial, precisely how thoroughly that particular rule had already failed.
She thought, briefly, of the careful villain she'd carried in her head for five years — the cold, terrible shape assembled from secondhand fragments of a book she'd barely read before her own life had interrupted the story. That villain would never have surrendered his own coat to a soaked dispensary girl simply because the alternative was watching her shiver. That villain would never have asked, twice, whether she missed home. She had spent five years preparing to survive a monster, and what she'd found instead, standing here in the rain, was something considerably harder to defend against — a tired, lonely man who happened, by an accident of birth and circumstance, to also be the most dangerous person in the kingdom.
---
"I don't, generally, speak with anyone this way," he said, after a while, the words arriving abruptly, without any of his usual careful preamble, as though he'd been turning the admission over for several minutes before finally allowing it out. "Conversation, for its own sake. Most of what I say to most people serves some specific purpose. I find I've rather lost the habit of speaking simply to fill a silence."
It was not, Elsie understood, a romantic confession. It was something quieter and, in its own way, considerably more revealing — the plain, unguarded admission of a man whose entire adult life had apparently narrowed itself down to duty and necessity, with no remaining room for anything as small and purposeless as easy conversation with another person.
"I don't think I've done much of it either, my lord. Not in a long while," she admitted, and found, saying it, that the admission cost her considerably less than she'd expected, standing here in the rain with his coat around her shoulders. "I think I forgot it was something a person could simply do, for its own sake, without needing a reason."
He looked at her for a long moment, something in his expression unreadable, and she wondered, watching him, whether he recognized in her the same particular shape of loneliness she'd just recognized in him — two people who'd each, for entirely different reasons, spent years learning to need nothing from anyone, finding themselves now, briefly and accidentally, standing close enough to notice exactly how heavy that learned independence had become.
---
The rain eased, eventually, the violent downpour softening into something gentler, more manageable, the kind of rain a person could walk through without genuine consequence. Elsie shrugged the coat from her shoulders, the warmth of it lingering against her skin even after she'd handed it back, and as their hands met in the brief exchange — her fingers passing the heavy wool into his — their hands brushed again, the lightest possible contact, exactly the way it had at the reception, except this time without the lamp's flicker, without the warmth racing up her arm, without anything beyond the simple, ordinary fact of two hands touching briefly in the process of returning a coat.
Both of them, she noticed, paused at the contact anyway, for a beat longer than the moment strictly required.
"Thank you, my lord," she said, finally, breaking the small silence, her voice steadier than she felt.
"Castian," he said, abruptly, and then, at her evident surprise, added, with the particular awkward, unpracticed honesty he'd shown throughout the entire strange, unguarded conversation, "You needn't call me 'my lord' every time you address me. Not after this evening, at least."
"Castian," Elsie repeated, testing the shape of his name in her own mouth for the first time, and found it sat there considerably more comfortably than she'd expected, given everything the name had once represented to her — five years of careful avoidance compressed, suddenly, into a single syllable that felt, spoken aloud in the cooling air, almost ordinary.
He nodded once, the particular brief, satisfied acknowledgment of a man who'd just made a small, deliberate concession and intended to leave the matter there without further discussion, and gathered his now-damp coat back over one arm rather than putting it on, apparently willing to brave the last of the drizzle rather than draw the moment out any longer than it had already extended.
"I should return to the council chamber," he said. "They'll have started without me by now, and I'd rather arrive late than not arrive at all."
"Of course," Elsie said, and watched him step back out into the gentler rain with no further ceremony, the particular brisk, businesslike departure of a man returning, deliberately, to the careful composure he'd briefly set aside.
He left before she could formulate any response to that at all, disappearing back into the rain toward whatever obligation waited for him elsewhere in the keep, and Elsie stood beneath the overhang for a long while afterward, watching the rain continue its gentler fall, turning over the precise, unsettling strangeness of having just spent an entire conversation with the single most dangerous man in the kingdom and feeling, throughout almost all of it, nothing more dramatic than the simple, ordinary comfort of being genuinely seen by another person for exactly who she was.
It was, she understood, considerably more frightening than any flickering ward had ever managed to be.
She gathered her supplies, mostly dry beneath the bundle she'd kept pressed against her chest, and made her own way back toward the dispensary at a considerably slower pace than the remaining rain strictly required, in no particular hurry to return to the ordinary, sensible version of herself that knew exactly how dangerous this entire evening had been and intended, eventually, to start behaving accordingly. For tonight, at least, she allowed herself to simply carry the warmth of it a little further before setting it down.
