She had not slept, not really, in the proper sense of the word. She had lain in the dark instead, running the same two futures through her head over and over until they'd worn smooth from handling, like coins rubbed featureless by too many fingers — and somewhere around the third hour of this, without quite noticing the moment it happened, she had stopped weighing them against each other and started, instead, noticing how much louder the bad one had gotten.
*Run alone.* It had sounded, three days ago, like the only sane option available to her — the rule she'd lived by for five years, refined into instinct, never once questioned. Tonight, turning it over one more time, it sounded like something else entirely: a narrow road through unfamiliar country, with no coin to spare for emergencies and no one to notice if she simply didn't arrive wherever she was going. A creature with eyes like lamps could find a lone traveler on an empty road a great deal more easily than it could find one face among several hundred new hires crowding through a warded gate.
She tried, somewhere around the fourth hour, to construct the strongest possible argument against going — surely there was some quieter town further south, some smaller household with smaller ambitions, some option that didn't involve walking directly toward the one name she'd spent five years training herself never to think about. She built that argument as carefully as she'd built anything in this borrowed life, and watched it collapse anyway, piece by piece, against the simple, unglamorous fact that quieter towns took longer to reach, offered no walls worth the name, and had absolutely nothing to recommend them except the comforting familiarity of being exactly the kind of plan she'd always made before.
Familiar, she was beginning to suspect, was not the same thing as safe. It had simply felt that way for long enough that she'd stopped checking the difference.
She had built her safety, for five years, on being invisible. It occurred to her, somewhere past midnight, that the safest kind of invisible left wasn't isolation at all. It was crowd.
By the time grey light came creeping under the shutters, she'd stopped deciding and started, instead, simply knowing, the way you know a held breath has to end eventually whether you've made peace with it or not.

Maeve arrived before the shop had properly opened, the particular set of her shoulders suggesting she'd come prepared either to celebrate or to argue, and hadn't yet decided which.
"Well?" she said, without preamble.
"I'm coming," Elsie said, and felt something settle in her chest the moment the words were out — not relief, exactly, nothing so simple as that, but the specific steadiness that came from having finally stopped arguing with herself about a thing that had, in truth, already been decided days ago, underneath all the deliberation.
Maeve's face did the thing it had been carefully not doing for three days, breaking into something bright and unguarded. "Good. Good — I was half convinced you'd talk yourself into walking off alone into the hills like some kind of hermit."
"I considered it," Elsie admitted, "extensively," and didn't elaborate further, because there was no version of *extensively* that wouldn't require explaining things Maeve had no reason to understand.
Before anything else, before packing, before saying any of the goodbyes she suspected would cost her more composure than she wanted to spend in front of witnesses, Elsie sat with the notebook one final time and added, beneath the four rules that had carried her this far, a fifth.
*Rule Five: invisible doesn't always mean alone. Sometimes it means a crowd big enough to disappear into. Pick whichever keeps you alive. Reassess constantly. Trust no rule absolutely, including this one.*
It felt, writing it, less like adding a rule than like quietly retiring the version of herself who'd needed only three.

Telling Bren took less time than she expected, and cost her considerably more than she'd budgeted for.
"Caldreth," he repeated, when she told him, with the flat, suspicious tone of a man checking whether he'd misheard something unpleasant. "The Regent's keeping. You. Going there."
"Maeve's idea. Better wages, safer walls. I think it's the sensible choice, given —" she gestured, vaguely, at the empty street beyond the window, the curfew notice still nailed where it had been nailed for days now, "— everything."
He was quiet for a moment, scowling at the shelves in the particular way that meant he was thinking rather than actually irritated, and then he reached under the counter and came up with a small leather pouch, which he set down between them without ceremony.
"That's not your full wage," he said, before she could ask. "It's more than your full wage. Don't argue with me about it, I've already decided, and arguing with a decided man wastes both our time." He cleared his throat, looked anywhere but at her face. "You're better than this shop deserved, you know. Showed up out of nowhere three years back, alphabetized my betony without asking, never once complained about the hours. Hope wherever you end up appreciates that."
It was, by a significant margin, the longest and most personal sentence Bren had spoken to her in three years of working together, and Elsie found, to her own considerable surprise, that she had to look away from him for a moment before she trusted her voice enough to answer.
"You'll find someone else to alphabetize your betony," she managed eventually.
"Doubt it," Bren said, gruffly, and busied himself with the ledger again, the particular abrupt return to ordinary irritation that she'd come to recognize, over three years, as the precise shape of a man who'd just said more than he meant to and needed somewhere safe to put his hands while he recovered from it. That — more than the coin, more than anything else he might have said — was the moment it actually hit her that she was leaving somewhere that had, against every rule she'd ever written, quietly become a place she would genuinely miss.
---
They left at dawn the next day, six of them in total — Maeve, Elsie, and four others from neighboring villages who'd heard the same rumors of triple wages and warded walls and decided the road to Caldreth was a better gamble than staying put. A carter named Joren, hauling grain to the capital regardless of recruitment drives, had agreed to take them along for a few coins each and the company on a road that had gotten considerably less pleasant to travel alone.
The first day passed easily enough — ordinary countryside, ordinary farms, the kind of unremarkable scenery Elsie had spent five years cultivating a fondness for. The other travelers talked freely among themselves about the work they hoped to find, the wages they intended to send home, the particular relief of a destination that promised walls thick enough to sleep behind without listening for trouble all night. Elsie listened more than she spoke, contributing the occasional unremarkable agreement, and found, with some private amusement, that five years of practiced blankness made her an excellent traveling companion for people who wanted to talk and didn't especially need to be talked back to.
It was the second day that reminded all of them why people had stopped traveling that road by choice.
They passed a farmstead, perhaps a mile off the road, with its roof caved in on one side and no smoke rising from the chimney, and nobody in the cart suggested stopping to check on it, because everybody in the cart already understood, without needing to discuss it, exactly why no one had bothered to repair it yet. Further on, a stretch of fence lay snapped and scattered across an empty field, the kind of damage that didn't match wind or rot or anything with the decency to be ordinary. They passed a second farm not long after, this one occupied but barricaded, every window shuttered tight despite the warm afternoon, smoke rising thin and careful from a chimney as though even the fire inside had been told to keep quiet. Joren kept the horses moving at a pace just shy of urgent the entire afternoon, and nobody complained about the dust.
"Lovely scenery," muttered one of the other travelers, a broad-shouldered young man named Hask, in the particular tone people use to make a joke they don't actually find funny.
"Won't last," Maeve said, with more confidence than Elsie suspected she actually felt. "We'll be behind walls by tomorrow night."
"Tomorrow's two days off, by my reckoning," Joren said, without looking back from the reins, and nobody had a particularly cheerful response to that.
Elsie said nothing, mostly because she'd already spent the better part of the afternoon doing the quiet, methodical work of cataloguing every plausible threat along the visible horizon, the way she'd trained herself to do automatically after five years of needing to. It was, she reflected, an exhausting habit to maintain and an impossible one to switch off, even when — especially when — there was genuinely nothing she could do about any of it from the back of a moving cart.
---
They camped that night in a clearing just off the road, fire kept deliberately small, watches arranged without anyone quite admitting out loud that watches were necessary. The other travelers had grown quieter as the day wore on, the easy talk of the first day replaced by short, practical exchanges about firewood and watch order and how much further the maps suggested they had left to go. Around the second hour past midnight, something moved through the treeline at the clearing's edge — not close, not obviously threatening, just a low rustle and the brief, unmistakable impression of weight where there should have been none — and the entire camp went rigid at once.
"Could be a deer," Hask said, in a voice that wanted very badly to be believed.
"Could be," Elsie agreed, in the calm, even tone she'd spent years perfecting for exactly this purpose — not because she believed it, but because someone needed to sound like they believed it, and panic, she'd learned long ago, spread a great deal faster than reassurance ever did. "Deer move like that. Heavy in the brush, light on packed ground. Whatever's out there isn't coming toward the fire, which is the only part that actually matters right now."
It wasn't entirely true — she had no idea whether the thing in the treeline cared about fire at all — but it was useful, and the camp settled, marginally, around the shape of her certainty rather than the shakier reality underneath it. One of the other travelers, a quiet woman named Pell who'd barely spoken since they'd left Bramblehollow, asked in a small voice whether they ought to keep moving through the night instead of stopping, and Elsie found herself, somewhat to her own surprise, talking the whole group calmly through the actual arithmetic of the situation — exhausted travelers stumbling through unfamiliar dark were easier prey than a watchful camp with a fire, not harder — until the group settled, one by one, back into something resembling rest.
Maeve shot her a look across the dying flames that mixed gratitude with something more curious, the particular expression of someone filing away a detail about a friend they hadn't expected to need filing.
"You're good in a crisis," Maeve said quietly, once the others had mostly settled back into uneasy half-sleep.
"Five years of practice," Elsie said, which was truer than Maeve could possibly know, and left it there, uncomfortably aware that being *good in a crisis* was precisely the sort of trait that drew attention, the exact opposite of everything she'd spent half a decade cultivating. She filed the discomfort away alongside everything else she'd already decided to worry about later, on the theory that later was rapidly becoming the only place she had left to put things.
---
They reached the outskirts of Caldreth's province on the fourth day, and it was there, on a wide stretch of road flanked by cultivated fields, that they first had to pull the cart aside entirely.
The column came from behind them, fast enough that Joren had the horses off the road and the cart's wheels in the verge well before the noise of it became unmistakable: a full mounted escort, two dozen riders at least, banners snapping with a crest Elsie didn't recognize in detail but understood immediately by context — black field, something silver at its center, the unmistakable visual shorthand of a household important enough to need an armed escort moving through its own territory.
"Regent's colors," Joren said, low, eyes fixed firmly on the ground in the particular practiced deference of someone who'd learned exactly how much attention was safe to pay to crown business passing by. "Best keep your heads down till they're past."
Elsie kept her head down with more genuine commitment than anyone else in the cart, pulling her hood forward and finding, with some irony, that the posture she'd have used anywhere else purely out of habit had, for the first time in five years, an actual specific danger attached to it.
The column thundered past at a controlled, disciplined pace, dust rising in its wake, and it was in the brief window before she fully lowered her eyes — half a second, no more — that she caught it: a single rider near the column's center, set slightly apart from the rest, dressed in unrelieved black against the afternoon light, posture so still and so deliberate it looked less like riding and more like something carved that had simply been mounted on a horse for transport. She couldn't make out a face. She couldn't, from that distance and that angle, have said with any certainty whether the rider was young or old, kind or cruel, anything at all beyond the simple, undeniable fact of his stillness.
And yet something in her chest reacted to it anyway — not recognition, nothing so specific as that, but a low, unsettled hum of awareness, the particular feeling of being looked at by something looking for exactly the wrong thing, even though she was almost certain, from this distance, that he hadn't looked her way at all.
She kept her head down until the dust had fully settled and the sound of hooves had faded into the ordinary quiet of the road, and told herself, with rather less conviction than she usually managed, that it had meant nothing — a stranger on a horse, glimpsed for half a second, filtered through nerves already strained thin by four days of bad roads and worse rumors.
"You all right?" Maeve asked, once they were moving again. "You've gone quiet."
"Fine," Elsie said, and didn't examine, too closely, why her heart was still beating faster than the moment seemed to warrant.
---
They reached Caldreth itself at dusk, and whatever composure Elsie had managed to hold onto through four days of travel very nearly abandoned her entirely at the sight of it.
The walls rose higher than any structure she'd seen in either of her lives, pale stone catching the last of the daylight, and threaded through that stone, visible even from this distance, ran lines of warding light — faint, silver-blue, pulsing with the same slow, deliberate rhythm she remembered from a dream she'd done her very best to forget. The gates stood open, flanked by guards and torches, and a crowd of perhaps two hundred people already milled before them — hopeful applicants from every corner of the realm, drawn by the same triple wages and the same promise of safety behind warded stone that had drawn her own small group this far. Vendors had set up along the approach selling bread and watered ale to the waiting crowd, and somewhere a fiddler was playing something cheerful and entirely out of step with the tension running underneath everyone's forced good humor, the particular brittle cheer of people who'd all left something behind to be here and were trying very hard not to think about it too closely.
She stood at the edge of that crowd, looking up at walls that had, until three days ago, existed for her only as the unexamined backdrop to a name she'd spent five years refusing to think about, and felt the full, dizzying weight of exactly what she was about to do settle over her all at once.
*This is it,* she thought, with the particular, vertiginous clarity of someone standing at the literal threshold of the single thing she had organized her entire existence around avoiding. *This is the place I built every single rule around staying away from. I'm about to walk through the front gate of it on purpose, with two hundred strangers, hoping nobody important ever learns my name.*
It should have felt like defeat. Strangely, standing there with the warding light pulsing slow and patient overhead, it felt instead like something closer to a held breath finally being let out — five years of careful avoidance collapsing not into disaster, but into a different kind of resolve entirely, the kind that came from having run out of better options and discovering, somewhat to her own surprise, that she could still function without one.
Beside her, Maeve let out a low whistle, entirely unburdened by any of the history weighing on Elsie's chest. "Well," she said, grinning despite four days of dust and worry, "no turning back now."
"No," Elsie agreed, and meant it more completely than Maeve could possibly have understood.
Ahead of them, the great gates of Caldreth stood open, warm light spilling out from within, and the line of hopeful strangers began, slowly, to move forward.
Elsie squared her shoulders, fixed her face into the practiced, forgettable blankness that had kept her alive for five years, and walked through.
The noise of the crowd swallowed her almost immediately — shouted instructions from gate officials, the press of bodies all moving toward the same uncertain promise, the particular anonymous comfort of being one indistinguishable face among many. It was, she thought, exactly the kind of invisibility Rule Five had promised her, and for the first time since reading that proclamation nailed to Bramblehollow's noticeboard, she let herself believe, just slightly, that she might actually be able to survive what came next.
