She was eleven years old and she was doing actual work.
This had become, over three years, such a normal feature of her Tuesdays that she had mostly stopped noticing it — the shift from the corner chair to the working position, from observer to participant, had happened so gradually that she could not point to the specific moment when Aldwin had stopped testing her and started simply expecting her to be useful. It was the kind of change that announced itself only in retrospect, when you looked back from a distance and realized that something had quietly become different while you were busy with other things.
The contract on the desk in front of her was a renewal agreement for the Ardenis textile partnership in the southern city of Velmarch, and it had three problems. She had found two of them in the first reading and the third in the second, which was her standard average for documents of this complexity. The third problem was the interesting one: a clause in the arbitration section that appeared to be standard language but contained a jurisdiction specification that, given a recent change in imperial trade law, created an ambiguity that would significantly favor the other party in any dispute.
She was writing her analysis in the margin — she had learned, over three years, the specific format that Aldwin found most efficient, which was not the format she would have chosen herself but which she had adopted because the goal was to be useful and usefulness meant meeting the reader where they were rather than where you preferred them to be — when she registered that Aldwin was tired.
It was not in anything he said. It was in the quality of his stillness, which was slightly different than his usual stillness. Aldwin in ordinary circumstances was still in the way of someone who had made a decision to be economical with motion; this morning he was still in the way of someone who was conserving something.
She filed it, the way she filed things, and kept writing.
The knock came twenty minutes later.
She knew it was Tareth before the door opened, because she had been attuned to his presence for four years, and she knew the sound of his step in the corridor. What she had not been expecting was the quality of the step — slower than usual, and with the particular carefulness of someone who was paying attention to how they were moving.
He looked at her first when he came through the door, which was the tell. If he had been coming to speak to Aldwin, he would have looked at Aldwin. He looked at her with the expression she had learned to read as *I'm managing something and I would like you nearby while I manage it*, and then he looked at Aldwin with the expression he used for interactions with his father that required more social maintenance than he particularly enjoyed.
"Father. I'm sorry to interrupt. I was wondering if Lia might be finished for the morning."
Aldwin looked at Tareth. The look lasted approximately two seconds longer than his usual assessment, and she could see, in the specific quality of his attention, that he was seeing the same things she was seeing — the careful movement, the slightly too-controlled quality of her father's posture, the particular pallor that was not today's pallor but a pallor that had been accumulating.
"Of course," Aldwin said. And then, to Liora: "Leave the analysis. I'll review it this afternoon."
She set down her pen and followed her father into the corridor.
They walked back toward the east wing without hurrying, in the specific unhurried quality of two people who had learned to move at each other's pace. It had taken her longer than it should have to learn this — she had spent the first year of the regression moving too fast, at the pace of someone who had somewhere to be, and Tareth had adapted to it without comment, and it was Mae who had eventually said, in the direct way she said things that needed saying: "Your father walks at a certain pace because walking faster costs him something. You might consider that."
She had considered it.
Now she matched his pace without thinking about it, the way she matched the cadence of his breathing when they were in the same room, the ongoing small adjustments of someone who had learned to read another person by long proximity.
They were at the landing of the east staircase when he said it.
"The palace delegation. The schedule changed. They arrive next week, not the week after."
She stopped walking.
He stopped beside her, on the landing, with the winter light coming in through the high window above the stairs, and he looked at her with the expression she had seen twice before — the expression of a man who had decided to know difficult things rather than not know them.
"How did you find out?" she said.
"I've been paying attention to the correspondence from the capital," he said. "For about a year." A pause. "You've been paying attention to it for longer."
She looked at the window. The winter light was the particular silver of late autumn in Ardenholt, the color that made everything look like it was being seen through water.
"Yes," she said.
"I thought so." He began to move again, slowly, up the stairs, and she went with him. "The delegation includes a representative from the palace administrative commission. The one overseeing the restricted residence reviews." Another pause. "I know what that means, Lia. I've known for a while what you've been trying to do."
She said nothing.
"I'm not going to tell you not to," he said. "That's not what I wanted to say." They reached the top of the stairs and turned toward his rooms, and she walked beside him in the specific silence of someone waiting for the rest of a sentence. "I wanted to say that you should know that I've been trying to help in the ways that were available to me. Which have been limited. But not nothing."
She looked at him.
"The information about the delegation schedule," he said. "And some other things. A letter, last spring, through a channel I won't describe in a corridor." He gave her a brief, sideways look that had more in it than its length suggested. "I think you know more about the situation than I do. I think you've known it for a long time. But I wanted you to know that you aren't doing this entirely alone."
She stopped walking.
He stopped with her, in the corridor outside his rooms, and turned to face her with the patience of a man who was not in a hurry because he had learned, at some point, that hurrying cost him.
"Papa," she said, which was not a word she used often anymore.
"Yes," he said.
She looked at him — the specific quality of her father at forty-two, the gray that had come in at his temples, the lines that the illness had put there over years of low-grade work on his constitution, the particular exhaustion that was not today's exhaustion but the accumulated weight of a body that had been fighting something for a long time. She looked at him and thought about all the things she had not told him and all the reasons she had not told them and whether any of those reasons still made sense.
"Sit down," she said. "Tell me what you know. And I'll tell you what I know."
He looked at her for a moment with the expression she had not seen since the night of the silver marks and the open hand.
"All right," he said. And went inside.
He knew more than she had expected.
Not about the bloodline — she had given him the broad shape of that two years ago, and he had taken it in with the specific acceptance of a man who had already known something was happening and had been waiting to understand it better. But about the political situation: the restricted residence review, the commission, the history of how the Third Prince had come to be in the Witherhold in the first place. He had sources she had not known about — careful, quiet sources, the kind that a man built over decades of being the son of an important person without being important himself, which created a particular kind of access.
"Your grandfather made a decision," Tareth said, "when Kaelis Veren was six years old. There was pressure — from several directions — to have the boy declared a danger to the imperial household. Your grandfather was asked, as someone whose family held a significant position in the western territories, to add his voice to that declaration."
Liora was very still.
"He declined," Tareth said. "That much I know. He declined specifically and in writing. But he also declined to actively oppose the confinement, which was the other option available to him at the time. He chose not to choose." He looked at his hands. "I don't know what he was weighing. I know what the result was."
"He told me it was decisions made for the right reasons that produced wrong results," Liora said.
Tareth looked at her. "When?"
"Two years ago. When I asked about Kaelis directly."
Her father was quiet for a moment. "He told you about it."
"Not specifically. He told me not to ask again." She paused. "He also told me to come back Tuesday and bring what I'd read."
Tareth almost smiled. It was the particular almost-smile of someone recognizing a pattern they should have seen earlier. "Yes," he said. "That sounds right."
She told him the rest — not everything, but more than she had told anyone, more than Hessa, more than Mae. She told him about the merchant's reports and the frost on the walls and the stopped books. She told him about the two bloodlines and what they could do together. She told him about the commission and what it meant and what she intended to do about the delegation.
He listened the way he always listened — without interrupting, without the urgency that other people brought to difficult information, with the specific quality of attention that was his own and that she had been drawing on, she understood now, since she was old enough to need it.
When she finished, he said: "What do you need from me?"
She looked at him.
"Get better," she said. "That's what I need from you."
He was quiet for a moment. "I'm working on it," he said, which was the most honest thing she could have asked him to say, and he said it with the specific flatness of someone who was not making a promise but was making a statement of intent.
"I know," she said.
Calanthe found her in the library late afternoon.
In four years, the dynamic between them had shifted in the way that things shifted when they were worked on consistently and carefully — not resolved, not fixed, but moved. Calanthe was sixteen now and had the particular quality of a person who had been paying attention for a long time and had developed opinions about what she was paying attention to. The curiosity that had been weaponized at twelve was still there; it had become more sophisticated, more directional. She had, over time, become someone who watched what Liora did and drew conclusions, which was not the same as being an ally but was also not the same as being a threat.
She sat down across from Liora at the library table without asking, which was what she always did, and said: "Vorian has been talking about you."
Liora kept her eyes on the document she was reviewing. "When hasn't he?"
"To people he doesn't usually talk to. People associated with the palace delegation." Calanthe folded her hands on the table with the particular precision of someone organizing what she was about to say. "I don't know what he's saying. I know who he's saying it to, and I don't like it."
Liora looked up.
Calanthe's expression was the one she had been cataloguing for four years — the sharp attention, the willingness to look directly at difficult things, the specific quality of someone who had decided that the truth was more useful than the comfortable version. It was still the same expression. The difference was what it was pointed at.
"Why are you telling me this?" Liora said.
"Because I've been watching you for four years," Calanthe said. "And I've been watching him for longer. And I know which one of you is more likely to be doing something worth protecting." She paused, and added, with the particular honesty of someone who had decided that being direct cost less than being oblique: "I don't entirely understand what you're doing. But I've seen enough to know that whatever it is, it's not small. And if he's trying to stop it, I'd rather he didn't."
Liora looked at her.
"He knows something about your interest in the restricted residences," Calanthe said. "I don't know how. But he's been making that specific kind of conversation that means he's preparing to use information." She stood. "I thought you should know." She moved toward the door and paused with her hand on the frame. "I'm not asking you to tell me what you're planning. I'm just saying that if you're going to do something, you should probably do it before he does whatever he's planning."
She left.
Liora sat in the library for a long time after she was gone.
The passage was small now, in the way it had been small since she turned eleven — not the intimate smallness of a hiding place but the different quality of a space she had grown out of while continuing to use. She sat against the wall with her knees up and the cold stone at her back and the warmth of the roots below her, and she did not write anything.
She had spent four years writing things in this passage. Plans and timelines and conditions and names and sentences she destroyed immediately afterward. She had used this space to hold the things that were too large for her ordinary mind to hold without somewhere to put them.
Tonight she did not need to write anything.
She was aware, in the specific way of someone who had been working toward something for a long time, that she was at the edge of the preparation and the beginning of the thing itself. The commission was coming. The delegation was coming. The window was open, and she knew the shape of it, and she knew what she was going to do.
What she was not prepared for, and had not prepared for, was the quiet that arrived when she stopped planning.
In the quiet, she thought about Kaelis Veren.
Not about him as a condition to be met. Not about him as the answer to her father's illness. Not about him as the key to the succession problem or the proof of what the bloodlines could do together or the investment she had been building toward for four years. All of those things were true and none of them were what she was thinking about.
She was thinking about a boy who had stood in a garden and not been sure whether he had decided correctly to be there. She was thinking about someone who had stopped accepting the books they sent him and what that specific act of stopping meant — the particular quality of a person who had decided that wanting things was not worth the cost of wanting them.
She was thinking about what four more years in that tower had done to the person who had once been a six-year-old child and had been told, from that age onward, that the safest thing he could do was to not reach for anything. She was thinking about the frost on the interior walls and the refused books and the single sighting in the garden — uncertain, brief, retreating — and she was thinking about what it took to keep getting up in the morning when you had been told, every morning, that the world was safer without you in it.
She was thinking about what it would mean to knock on a door and say: *I know what you are. I know it isn't a curse. I know because I carry the other half of it. And I am not afraid of you.*
She was thinking, with the specific quality of something that did not require analysis or plan or any of the other frameworks she usually brought to difficult things, that she was going to go to him.
Not because of the strategy. Not because of her father. Not because of the succession or the commission or the window that was closing.
Because he had been alone in that tower for nine years. Because he did not know that there was anyone in the world who understood what he carried. Because the forest needed both — the growing season and the dying one — and someone needed to tell him that, and she was the only person who could.
She pressed her palm against the stone floor and felt the roots below, patient and old and there, as they had always been.
*I'm coming*, she thought, for the last time in this passage, in this version of herself that was eleven years old and had just finished four years of preparation.
*Not for the plan. For you.*
She blew out the candle.
She sat in the dark for a moment.
Then she stood up, and pushed open the door, and went to make sure she was ready.
