The first problem with being seven years old was the hands.
Liora had spent the first ten minutes after waking staring at them — the small, soft, entirely useless things attached to her wrists where her real hands were supposed to be. No calluses. No ink stains. Knuckles that had never cracked from cold mornings over ledger books, skin that had never been split by the edge of a document crate or reddened by the particular dryness of archive rooms in winter.
She flexed them experimentally. They flexed back, cooperative and unhelpful.
*Fine*, she thought. *We work with what we have.*
She had learned that much, at least, in the previous version of her life. You worked with what you had, or you didn't work at all.
The nursery smelled exactly as she remembered — cedarwood and beeswax polish and the faint sweetness of the candles her father always burned in the adjoining room when he read at night. The curtains were the heavy gold ones, the ones that kept the morning light out until the household was ready for it. Through the gap at the edge, she could see pale early sky.
She sat up in the bed and began to take inventory.
This was the third day of the Velmarch Fair, which meant it was the fourteenth of Harrow, which meant her grandfather was in Ardenholt rather than the capital. Which meant she had access. Which meant the earliest viable window for beginning to build her case with him was somewhere in the next two weeks, assuming she could find a reason to put herself in his presence without it appearing deliberate.
She was seven years old. Adults would assume any reason she gave was not deliberate.
This was, she was beginning to realize, the only significant advantage she currently possessed.
She swung her legs over the side of the bed. The floor was cold. She found her slippers with her feet, stood up, walked to the window, and looked out at the Ardenis gardens in the early light — the broad lawns, the ornamental hedges, the fountain with the World Tree motif at its center, water sheeting down over carved branches in the way it had done for longer than anyone currently alive could remember.
*Four years*, she thought. *Roughly four years before father's cough begins. Eight years before grandfather dies. Twelve years before Vorian completes the destruction.*
She pressed her hand against the cold glass and felt the chill move up through her small palm.
*Twelve years is enough time*, she decided. *If I don't waste any of it.*
Breakfast in the Ardenis household was a more formal affair than Liora had remembered it being, which suggested that her memories of early childhood had smoothed out the edges of things — had made the long table with its precise arrangement of silverware seem warmer and more casual than it actually was. The footmen stood at their stations. The food arrived in courses. Her father sat at his end of the table with the newspaper folded beside his plate, reading in the unhurried way of a man who had not yet been given any reason to rush through his mornings.
Liora sat across from him and ate her porridge and watched him the way she had not allowed herself to watch anyone in a very long time.
Tareth Ardenis at thirty-one was a different person than the man she had last known at forty-two. The gray had not yet come in at his temples. His hands were steady when he turned the newspaper page. He ate without thinking about it, which meant nothing hurt yet — the illness, when it came, would take his appetite first, quietly, in the way that the worst things always arrived quietly. He laughed at something in the paper, a short, private sound, and Liora felt something in her chest perform a complicated maneuver that she did not have time to examine.
*Focus*, she told herself. *He's alive. He's well. That's the point — keep him that way.*
She ate her porridge.
The doors to the breakfast room opened, and the problem walked in wearing a yellow dress.
Calanthe Ardenis was twelve years old and already in possession of the particular expression she would carry for the rest of her life — the one that assessed every room she entered and found it generally wanting. She came in ahead of her father, which was the kind of thing Vorian allowed because it cost him nothing and kept her quiet. Vorian himself followed a few steps behind, heavyset and unhurried, with the comfortable bearing of a man who had never seriously considered the possibility that anything might be expected of him.
Liora looked at them.
She had not seen either of them since the alley behind the Thornside gambling hall, which was an experience she would need to spend some time not thinking about, given that it had not happened yet and would not happen for another twenty years. The Vorian in front of her was a younger version — less red in the face, still technically capable of climbing a flight of stairs without assistance — but the essential character was the same. She could see it in the set of his jaw, in the way he clapped her father on the shoulder in greeting and made it look like affection when it was really measurement. *Still standing, little brother. Still in possession of your share. Good, good.*
*I see you*, Liora thought, and kept her face at seven years old.
Calanthe's gaze swept the table and landed on Liora with the assessment of a much older person — the quick up-and-down that meant *not a threat, not interesting, moving on.* Then she sat down across from her cousin and began to arrange the items near her plate into a more satisfactory configuration.
Liora watched and said nothing and filed everything away.
*You'll come for me eventually*, she thought pleasantly. *But not today. Today you think I'm furniture.*
*That's fine. Furniture is very useful.*
She escaped to the library after the meal, on the grounds that she wanted to look at the pictures in the big animal encyclopedia her grandfather kept on the third shelf, which was a request she had deployed successfully in the previous version of her life approximately forty times between the ages of five and nine. The footman who escorted her to the library door accepted this without comment. People who worked in large households learned very quickly which explanations to take at face value.
The Ardenis library was enormous and smelled exactly right — old paper and leather bindings and the particular dusty sweetness of books that had been loved and reshelved many times over many years. The reading tables were positioned below the high windows to catch the morning light. The shelves rose to the ceiling with ladders on rolling brass rails.
Liora walked in, waited until the footman had gone, and then looked up at the shelves and felt the specific frustration of a twenty-seven-year-old mind in a seven-year-old body confronting the reality that the shelf she needed was eight feet off the ground.
She could see the section from here. Bloodline histories, estate records, the old theological texts that nobody had looked at in thirty years because they were in a classical dialect that was no longer taught. She knew exactly which volumes she needed. She had read them all, in the previous version, in that same cold library at three in the morning — had cross-referenced and annotated and built the case that nobody had ever asked to hear.
The problem was that she was currently approximately four feet tall.
She dragged a footstool to the base of the ladder, climbed onto it, got one hand on the lowest rung, and immediately understood that this was not going to work. Her arms were not strong enough. Her reach was insufficient. And if she fell and hurt herself, her father would be notified, and the resulting fuss would take up time she did not have.
She climbed back down and stood in the middle of the library and thought about this.
*All right*, she conceded, *this is the first real problem.*
It was not, if she was being honest, surprising. She had understood, in the abstract, that returning to age seven would create practical limitations. But there was a significant difference between understanding something in the abstract and standing in the library where you need to be with your arms too short to reach the things you need to reach, and the gap between those two understandings was currently making itself very clear.
She sat down at one of the reading tables.
*Think*, she told herself. *You have twelve years. Not twelve days. Twelve years.*
The knowledge would wait. The books would be here. She did not need the bloodline histories today — she already knew what was in them. What she needed today was to begin building the architecture of her position within this household, and that required people, not books. Specifically it required one elderly librarian, who was currently moving between the shelves at the far end of the room in the methodical way of someone who had been caring for these books for a very long time and took the responsibility seriously.
She watched him work for a moment.
Then she said: "Excuse me."
The librarian — Ser Aldric, she remembered, white-haired and precise, a man who had been in this library since before her grandfather was born — turned and looked at her with the mild, not-unkind expression of someone who had spent decades making allowances for the Ardenis children.
"Good morning, young miss. Looking for the animal book again?"
She had been planning to say yes. It was the safe answer, the one that fit the role she was supposed to be playing.
Instead she looked at the carving above the main bookshelf — the World Tree, smaller than the one on the ceiling of her nursery but cut with more detail, more care, the roots and branches rendered with the kind of precision that meant someone had taken a very long time to get it right — and she said: "What kind of tree is it?"
Ser Aldric blinked. "I beg your pardon?"
"The tree in the family crest," she said, and let the curiosity in her voice be genuine, because it was. "I know it's called the World Tree. But what kind of tree is it actually? Like — is it an oak? A yew? Or is it not a real kind?"
There was a pause while the librarian reassessed the child in front of him.
She had timed this correctly. She could see it happen — the slight shift in his expression, the way he set down the book he was carrying. She was not the first Ardenis child to use the library. She was very likely the first one to ask that particular question.
"Come here, then," he said. "I'll show you something."
He led her to a case near the window, pulled out a slim volume that she recognized immediately — the botanical survey of the Ardenis estate, commissioned by her great-great-grandmother, illustrated by hand in extraordinary detail. He set it on the reading table and opened it to a page she had looked at many times, but never with these eyes.
"The World Tree is a composite," he said, tracing the illustration with one careful finger. "It doesn't exist in nature as a single species. The original Ardenis heraldic artists drew from five different trees — the root structure of the ancient oak, the canopy of the great ash, the bark of the iron-yew, the flowers of the white elder, and the seed-pods of the dispersal pine. Each one was chosen for what it meant."
"What does the root structure mean?" Liora asked.
He looked at her again — a longer look this time. "Memory," he said. "And the things we inherit without choosing to."
She nodded slowly, as though she was learning this for the first time.
She was not learning it for the first time. But Ser Aldric did not need to know that, and she needed him to believe that she was the kind of child who asked real questions and listened to real answers and would come back again tomorrow with more of the same. She needed him to think of her as someone worth talking to.
She sat at the table for another forty minutes. She asked three more questions. She listened carefully to all of the answers. When she left, Ser Aldric looked at her with the expression she had been working toward — thoughtful, slightly surprised, the particular look that meant *that child is more interesting than I expected.*
*Good*, she thought, walking back down the hallway toward the main house. *That's the first one.*
She did not tell anyone what she was doing. This was not difficult — she was seven years old, and the adults around her were occupied with adult concerns, and the particular business of one small child in a very large house was not something that required explanation or accounting. She moved through the afternoon freely, observing, cataloguing, mapping the household against her memories of it.
What she found was instructive.
The version of Ardenis she had known — the one that had occupied most of her adult life before she was thrown out of it — had already been declining by the time she arrived. The lean efficiency that her grandfather maintained had been eroding for years under the accumulated weight of her uncles' disinterest and her cousins' excess. She had spent twelve years managing that erosion, plugging holes, redirecting resources, maintaining the appearance of health in a body that was quietly hollowing out.
But this version was different.
This version was alive.
She stood at the edge of the courtyard in the late afternoon and watched the household move around her — the grooms, the kitchen staff, the estate managers crossing with their clipboards, the tutors heading for the schoolroom, all of it operating with a brisk competence that she had never quite seen, because by the time she was old enough to notice, it was already beginning to fray.
*This is what it was supposed to be*, she thought.
*This is what they threw away.*
The anger was useful. She had learned a long time ago that anger, properly managed, was one of the most reliable sources of fuel available. It burned clean and it burned long and it did not require the kind of maintenance that more fragile emotions needed. She held it carefully, like a coal in cupped hands.
*I will not let them do it again*, she thought. *Not the uncles. Not the cousins. Not the succession. Not any of it.*
*And I will get to Kaelis Veren before it's too late to matter.*
She had run the numbers during the afternoon, in the privacy of her own head where the arithmetic of the future lived. Kaelis was eleven now. She was seven. She needed — conservatively — three to four years before she would be old enough that an approach to the Witherhold would not be immediately dismissed as a child's fancy. Which put the earliest viable window at age ten or eleven for her, which would make him fourteen or fifteen. Old enough that the isolation would have done real damage. Young enough that the damage might still be reachable.
*Before his sixteenth birthday*, she had decided, the same conclusion she had reached in the previous life during those late-night library sessions. The palace's patience for the inconvenience of an imprisoned prince had limits. She did not know exactly where those limits were, but she knew they existed, and she knew that Kaelis had survived this long only because no one had yet found a politically convenient reason to stop being inconvenienced.
She needed to become someone useful enough, connected enough, and credible enough that she could provide an alternative before the palace settled on a permanent solution.
*Four years*, she thought. *Maybe five. Don't waste them.*
Her father came to her room that night as he always had, in this version of the world and in the other — sat on the edge of her bed with the book of illustrated fables he had been reading to her since she was old enough to follow a story. He read well, with the slight exaggeration of someone who had decided that if a thing was worth doing it was worth doing properly, and she lay under her blankets and looked at the ceiling and listened to words she could have recited from memory.
She had not thought about how much she missed this. She had been very careful, in the previous version of her life, not to think about it, because the alternative was to think about his voice reading to her and then to think about the years when there was no more reading and no more voice, and that way lay something she could not afford.
She had not understood, until this moment, how much of her twelve years of work had been grief wearing the clothes of productivity.
His voice moved through the familiar story — the youngest daughter who is underestimated, the road that is longer than it appears, the gift that turns out to be a different kind of gift than the one expected. She had always thought the story was too obvious. She thought so still.
She reached out from under the blanket and found his hand where it rested on the bedspread.
Her small fingers closed around his, and she held on with a grip that was not quite right for a seven-year-old — a fraction too deliberate, a fraction too aware of what it meant to hold someone's hand while you still could.
He didn't comment. He simply continued reading, and his hand turned slightly to hold hers back, and the room was warm and the candle burned at the bedside and outside the window the Ardenis estate lay quiet in the dark.
*I came back for the family*, she had told herself, when she woke up in this body. *For the house. For the legacy. For the things that should not have been destroyed.*
*That was true.*
*It was not the whole truth.*
She stared at the ceiling. The World Tree carved into the beam above her was barely visible in the low light — just the suggestion of branches, the hint of roots. She had looked at that carving almost every night of her early childhood and never thought about it as anything more than decoration.
Tonight, as her father read and his hand held hers and the candle made the shadows move, she looked at it differently.
And then — so briefly she almost decided she had imagined it — the faintest trace of light moved through the carved lines. Not lamplight. Something else. Something that came from within the wood itself, following the path of root and branch for just a moment before it faded and was gone.
Her fingertips were warm.
"Lia?" Her father's voice. The story had apparently ended while she wasn't listening. "Asleep already?"
She closed her eyes quickly. Breathed slowly. Let him believe what was easier.
He set the book aside. Tucked the blanket more firmly. Pressed a brief, habitual kiss to her forehead in the way of a parent performing the small liturgies of parenthood.
"Sleep well," he said, and stood, and moved toward the door, and she lay very still and felt the warmth fading from her fingertips and thought about carved trees and sleeping bloodlines and a boy in a tower who had been alone for five years already and did not yet know that someone was coming.
The door closed softly.
She opened her eyes.
Above her, the World Tree was dark and still and silent, as it had always been.
But her hands were still warm.
You've reached the end of this chapter
