The recommendation was nine pages.

She had written longer analyses — the eastern holdings report from three years ago had run to fourteen, and she had not yet found the ceiling for what a thorough examination of a complicated situation required. But nine pages was the appropriate length for this particular problem, and she had learned, over four years of working with Aldwin, that appropriate length was more useful than comprehensive length. He read for content, not for demonstration. Giving him more than the situation required was not thoroughness; it was noise.

She handed it to him on Wednesday morning, as requested.

He read it. She sat in the chair across from his desk and reviewed the morning's estate correspondence and did not watch him read, which was a practice she had developed specifically because watching people read things she had written produced in her the specific kind of impatience that was useless and counterproductive. The impatience was not about pride — it was about the specific desire to know whether what she had produced was what was needed, whether the model she had built of the problem was accurate to the actual problem, whether her recommendation would hold up against the information Aldwin had that she did not. These were legitimate questions and the only way to answer them was to wait and she was, by now, reasonably good at waiting.

She read about a fence dispute in the northern tenant fields — probably addressable with a letter and a site visit — and a question about the upcoming autumn contracts from the Velden valley merchants that she would need to review before Tuesday. She was halfway through the third document when she heard him set the pages down.

She looked up.

He was looking at the recommendation with the expression that was not the assessment expression and not the full-attention expression but the one she had come to understand as his version of *this is exactly what I needed and I'm not going to make a production of it.*

"This is good analysis," he said.

Not *good for someone your age.* Not *I'm impressed you managed this.* Simply *this is good analysis*, the way he said *the yield projections look correct* or *the contract terms are acceptable.* The sentence of someone applying a standard and finding the thing in front of him meeting it.

"Thank you," she said.

He picked up his pen. "I'll be in contact with the second party's representative by the end of the week. You'll sit in on the preliminary meeting."

"Yes," she said.

She went back to the fence dispute.

Two weeks later, she was on the road north again.

She had told herself, on the road back from the last visit, that she would not count the days until the next one. She had counted anyway — had kept the count in the part of her mind that kept things it was not supposed to keep, the same part that had been counting weeks since the first Witherhold visit and had not been persuaded to stop by any number of internal conversations about the strategic inadvisability of allowing certain things to matter more than was useful.

She had stopped having those conversations sometime around the fourth visit. They were not productive and they were not honest and she had more than enough dishonesty to manage in her external dealings without adding to the internal supply.

The road north was starting to become familiar in the way that routes became familiar — not just as directions, but as a sequence of sensations that the body recognized before the mind did. The quality of the light at the crossroads two hours out. The specific smell of the waystation at day four. The particular quality of the cold that meant they were close, the absence-cold that she now associated with proximity to something that was not quite ordinary.

She had been practicing the exercise she was going to show him for a week.

Hessa had described it as *proportional awareness* — not suppressing the channel but teaching it to register presence without automatically reaching for it, the way a person could notice something without immediately acting on the noticing. The mechanics of it were subtle enough that she had needed several iterations to understand them herself, and explaining it to someone who had no prior training vocabulary was going to require translation she was working out as she went.

She was, she realized on the fifth day of the journey, genuinely looking forward to seeing his face when the mechanism clicked.

This was a new category of looking-forward. She had looked forward to the visits in general — had been counting the days, evidently — but this was more specific: she wanted to see his particular expression when something she had said produced understanding, the one she had filed in her catalogue as *recognition*, the one that was different from the assessment look and the skepticism look and the flat management look. She wanted to see that.

She had built, over the course of four or five visits, a fairly detailed catalogue of his expressions. Not deliberately — she catalogued things, it was what she did, and his face was something she was paying attention to, and the two facts had combined without her specifically deciding they should. She could have told you the difference between the look he used when a piece of information confirmed his existing model and the look he used when it contradicted it. She could have described the specific quality of his attention when something she said was interesting versus merely new. She could have told you that the expression she privately called *recognition* appeared most often when a technical observation mapped to something he had experienced but had no prior framework for — and that it was, in her opinion, the best expression he made.

She kept this observation in the part of her mind that was honest with itself, and did not do anything else with it on the road.

He was in the garden.

This had become, over the course of their visits, so consistent that she had started to experience it as a baseline rather than a choice — not *he happened to be here* but simply *he is here*, the way the trees were here and the wall was here and the quality of the cold was here. She had noted, at some point, that she had stopped cataloguing his presence as information and had started experiencing it as setting.

She crossed the yard and stopped at the appropriate conversational distance and said: "I have something to show you."

"You always have something to show me," he said. Which was — she checked, in the quick internal way she had — the first thing he had said to her that was not purely informational. It was observational. It had, faintly, the texture of something that could be called dry.

She filed it without showing she had filed it.

"This one is different," she said. "It's practical rather than theoretical."

He looked at her. The assessment look, checking for ulterior motive, finding none. "Show me," he said.

She explained the proportional awareness exercise: the mechanism, the sensation to look for, the specific way the channel could be encouraged to register without reaching. She had translated it from Hessa's teaching vocabulary into something that would make sense to someone who had been observing his own channel for fifteen years without anyone explaining what he was observing, and she watched him listen the way she always watched him listen — tracking the specific quality of his attention, the place where it sharpened when something confirmed his existing model and the place where it shifted when something contradicted it.

He was good at this, she had come to understand. He had been building a model of his own bloodline for fifteen years with no outside input and no reference framework, and the model was incomplete in predictable ways — the parts where he had no data were gaps rather than errors — but the parts he had observed were accurate. He was a careful, systematic observer of the only thing he had been consistently in proximity to, which was himself.

She sometimes thought about what he might have become with a teacher from the beginning.

She stopped the thought before it went anywhere that was not useful.

The exercise required proximity to a living thing. She indicated the east wall tree — by now so familiar to both of them that it had achieved something like the status of a shared reference point — and she walked him through the initial state: hands near but not touching, channel available but not active, attention on the quality of the presence rather than the pull.

She was explaining the third step when she realized she had moved.

Not dramatically — two steps closer than she had started, the natural drift of someone gesturing at something and then standing to demonstrate, the kind of small unconscious repositioning that happened in any physical activity. But she was close enough that she could feel, distinctly, the edge of his channel's ambient field — the specific cold-warmth that she had felt during the first touch and had not felt again since.

She became aware of this and was about to step back when he stepped back first.

One step, deliberate. He was looking at her. Not at the tree.

"You should maintain more distance," he said. "The— last time was a specific situation. I don't want—" He stopped. His voice had the flat quality she had come to associate with him managing something rather than simply saying it. "I don't want that to become a habit."

She looked at him.

She looked at him the way she looked at Vorian when she was finding the thing underneath the thing that was being said. What she found was not what she expected.

"What are you actually worried about?" she said. "Not the general principle. What specifically."

He looked at her — the long look, the categorization look.

"You're asking me to explain a concern I have," he said.

"Yes."

"Most people don't do that."

"I'm aware," she said. "I'm asking anyway."

A silence. Outside the walls, somewhere in the distance, a bird was doing what birds did. Inside the walls, the trees were doing their minimum and the cold was doing its ambient thing and Kaelis Veren was looking at his gloved hands.

"He gets used to things," he said. "Things near him. And then he—" He stopped. "The bloodline. It gets used to things. And then it takes more than it should, because it has learned the thing is available." He looked at the tree. "The trees here. They're worse than they should be partly because they've been in proximity long enough that the channel expects them to give."

He was using the third person again. *He. It.* Himself described as something adjacent to himself, the habit of someone who had learned to think about their own nature as an external hazard rather than an internal quality.

She had been noticing this for several visits — the specific grammatical distance he maintained between himself and his own desires, his own fears, his own experience. *The bloodline seeks. He is not careful. It takes.* Always slightly removed, always described from the outside, as though the person who lived inside the experience and the person who reported on it were required to be different people.

She understood why. If you had been told, for fifteen years, that the thing that made you who you were was the thing that made you dangerous, you learned to describe yourself from the outside. You learned to treat your own nature as something to be observed and managed rather than inhabited. You learned to say *he* when you meant *I.*

"You're worried," she said carefully, "that if the channel gets used to my proximity, it will take more from me than it should."

He said nothing, which was confirmation.

"That's a real concern," she said. "You're right that channel habituation is a documented phenomenon."

He looked at her with the expression that meant he had expected her to dismiss the concern and was recalibrating.

"It is also addressable," she said. "That's part of what proportional awareness training is for — teaching the channel to regulate its own reach, including when it encounters something familiar." She paused. "But that's the technical answer. The technical answer isn't the only answer."

He waited.

"You said *he gets used to things*," she said. "Not *the channel.* You said *he.*"

He was very still.

"I'm not afraid of you getting used to my proximity," she said. "I want you to get used to my proximity. That's — that's the point of me being here."

The silence afterward had a quality she couldn't immediately name. Not tense, not comfortable, not the assessment silence or the thinking silence. Something different. The silence of a statement landing somewhere it had not been expected to land.

"That's a different concern," he said, finally.

"I know," she said. "It's your concern to have. I'm not going to argue with you about it." She looked at the east wall tree. "I'm just going to keep coming back."

He said nothing.

When Croft said it was time, she walked to the gate without turning around. She did not give him the opportunity to decide whether to say anything, because she had said what she had said and it did not need a response and she was not going to stand in the garden waiting for one.

She went through the gate.

She did not hear him say anything.

She had not expected to. That was not how this worked.

The road back was quiet. Croft rode beside her in the easy silence of someone who had learned, over many months of these journeys, that Liora processed things in her own time and that the most useful thing he could offer was the absence of demand.

She was thinking about *he gets used to things.*

She was thinking about what it meant to have trained yourself, over fifteen years, to think about your own want as a danger — to describe your own longing for proximity as something that would harm rather than something that could simply *be.* She was thinking about the specific habit of self-subtraction that looked like restraint but was actually a form of damage, the slow erosion of the belief that your own needs were safe to acknowledge.

She had spent a long time, in her previous life and in this one, understanding people by looking at what they had learned to do with what they felt. Aldwin had learned to carry guilt quietly and make it look like principle. Tareth had learned to love without asking for much in return. Vorian had learned to want things and call the wanting entitlement. She had learned to translate feeling into work, to take whatever she felt and redirect it into something productive, which was its own form of self-subtraction even when the work was good.

Kaelis had learned to treat himself as something to be contained. The gloves were the visible part. The third-person self-reference was the internal part. Both were the same lesson: *you are dangerous to what you are near, therefore minimize your nearness, therefore never want anything you might actually reach toward.*

The thing that had struck her, listening to him in the garden, was not the fear. The fear made sense. It was the specific shape of the fear — that he was afraid of *wanting to be near her*, not of the bloodline's effect. He had separated the two: the desire and the danger. And he believed, she thought, that the desire itself was the problem. That if he could simply want less, the danger would be less.

She had some experience with this. Not the same experience — hers had been about value rather than proximity, about earning the right to be present rather than believing proximity itself was harmful. Different wound, same shape.

*One thing at a time*, she had told herself, on the last road back.

She arrived at Ardenholt late in the evening, tired in the way of someone who had been thinking hard for eight days, and found waiting on her desk a brief note in Aldwin's precise hand: *The second party has agreed to the preliminary terms. The meeting is Thursday. Well done.*

She sat at her desk and held the note and let both things be true simultaneously — the difficult afternoon in a walled garden and the timber license proceeding to its next stage, the push and the win, the relationship that was not going forward easily and the work that was.

*One thing at a time,* she thought.

*And keep going.*

She thought about him in the garden, standing two feet back, looking at his gloved hands. She thought about *he gets used to things* and the specific grammar of someone who had learned to describe their own longing as a hazard. She thought about what it would take — how many visits, how many small true things, how many times of not leaving when leaving would have been easier — for that grammar to shift.

She did not know. She had not known how long the other things would take either, and they had taken as long as they took, and she had kept going.

She folded the note, set it on the desk, and went to sleep.

The push had happened. She had not fixed it. She had not managed it into something more comfortable. She had said what was true — *I want you to get used to my proximity* — and left it there, and tomorrow the timber meeting would happen, and in three weeks or a month she would go north again, and the push would still be there because that was how this worked.

Stage two of anything was never as clean as stage one. Stage one was about deciding to begin. Stage two was about finding out what beginning actually cost and deciding it was worth the cost anyway.

She had decided.

She went to sleep.
