The documents Ser Aldric produced the following morning were thinner than she had hoped.
This was not his fault. She could see, from the way he set the folder on the table with the careful precision of a man who had spent a long time deciding whether to produce it at all, that he had gone further than his usual professional boundaries to find them. The folder was old — the leather cover soft with handling, the edges worn in the specific way of things that had been taken out and put back many times over many years. It did not belong to the main library collection. It belonged to whatever private archive Ser Aldric kept in the rooms behind the catalogue desk that he had never invited her to see.
"This is everything I have that isn't restricted," he said. Which was his way of telling her that there was more that was.
"Thank you," she said, and meant it, and opened the folder.
The documents inside were copies — careful, precise copies in a hand she didn't recognize, which meant someone had thought it worth the effort to duplicate originals that were kept elsewhere. Three pages of estate records from the fourth century, a short theological essay on the nature of complementary bloodlines, and a single half-sheet that appeared to be a letter fragment, the top edge cut clean.
She read it all at the appropriate speed for a child encountering difficult historical language, which required concentration she preferred to spend on the content. The estate records were familiar — she had seen similar documents in the previous version, though not these specific ones. The theological essay contained nothing she didn't already know, framed in the ornate language of a century that had believed ornate language was the same as careful thought.
The letter fragment was new.
It was addressed to no one, or the addressee had been removed with the cut edge. The text that remained was three sentences:
*The records pertaining to the secondary expression must be removed from general access before the survey is complete. If the connection is established in writing, the implications for the current succession cannot be contained. I am writing to request that you act before the Ardenis archivist finishes his work.*
And below that, a signature. Not a name she recognized from her years of managing Ardenis affairs. A name she recognized from something older — the genealogical tables she had cross-referenced at three in the morning, in the previous version, looking for the origins of the Witherborn branch.
A name from the imperial family. Not the Empress's line. Not Prince Astor's people, nor Prince Dorien's.
A name from an older branch. A branch that traced directly to the generation that had confined a six-year-old prince to a tower and told the world he was dangerous.
She read the three sentences again.
Then she closed the folder, thanked Ser Aldric for his trouble, and sat for a moment looking at the rain moving across the garden windows while she recalibrated everything she thought she had understood about why Kaelis Veren was in the Witherhold.
The summons came an hour later, delivered by one of her grandfather's personal attendants — a man named Croft who had been with Aldwin Ardenis for thirty years and whose face operated on the principle that expressions were an unnecessary extravagance. He appeared at the library door, looked at her with the specific blankness of a man delivering a message he had not read and would not comment on, and said: "His Grace requests your presence in the study."
Ser Aldric looked up from his catalogue.
Liora set down the botanical survey she had been using as cover and stood up and followed Croft down the corridor.
She had been waiting for this. She had been building toward it, patiently, with the garden and the dining room and the two moments of held eye contact. She had expected it in another two or three weeks, after more groundwork. She had not expected it now, a month into the project, when she was still finding her footing in this body and this timeline.
*Faster than anticipated*, she noted. *Adjust.*
The study was at the end of the east corridor, overlooking the formal gardens. She had been in it exactly twice in the previous version of her life — once when she was nineteen, to receive the assignment that had kept her at her grandfather's side for his last years, and once after his death, when Viese had summoned her there to deliver the coin purse. Both memories were in the category of things she handled by not handling.
She walked through the door and found Duke Aldwin Ardenis sitting behind the large mahogany desk, reading a letter, which he set aside when she entered. He did not invite her to sit. He also did not not invite her to sit, which in the specific vocabulary of Aldwin Ardenis was its own kind of statement.
She stood in the middle of the room and waited.
He looked at her for a moment in the way she had observed from a distance — the methodical, document-reviewing quality of attention that he brought to everything.
Then he reached into the stack of papers on the corner of his desk and produced a single sheet, which he set on the desk facing her. She was too far away to read it from where she stood.
"Come here," he said.
She came.
It was a trade summary — imports and exports for the Ardenis southern holdings, the past two quarters. The numbers were the kind of numbers she could read without thinking about it, the way other people read words. She recognized the pattern immediately: the southern agent had been skimming. Not dramatically, not enough to trigger a formal audit, but consistently and over a long enough period that the cumulative loss was significant.
She looked at it.
She looked at it the way a seven-year-old would look at a page of numbers — with the politely uncertain expression of someone trying to be helpful about something they mostly didn't understand.
"What do you see?" her grandfather said.
This was the test. She recognized it. He had done this with all his grandchildren at some point — put something in front of them and asked what they saw, not because he expected a useful answer but because the answer told him something about how a person's mind worked. In the previous version, she had not been in the room for any of those assessments. She had been in the servants' corridor outside, listening through the door, because she had already understood by then that the information was worth having even if she had no standing to receive it directly.
She knew what the correct answer was. She also knew that giving the correct answer would mean giving herself away in a way she was not yet prepared to do.
She looked at the numbers, and she looked at her grandfather, and she made a decision.
"I don't understand most of it," she said, which was true in the sense that it was the kind of thing a seven-year-old would say. "But this column —" she pointed to the import figures "— the numbers are smaller than this column —" she pointed to the export figures "— but they're both getting smaller together. Is that normal?"
Aldwin looked at her finger on the page.
"What made you notice that?" he said.
"They're moving the same way," she said. "When things move the same way but one should go up when the other goes down, that seems like it might be a question."
A pause.
"Yes," her grandfather said. "It is a question."
He picked up the document and set it back on the stack. He folded his hands on the desk, the deliberate gesture of a man who had made a decision about something.
"Did someone teach you to look at numbers that way?" he asked.
"Papa reads the trade reports out loud," she said. "I listen."
"And you understand them?"
She considered the performance she was giving, measured it against the man sitting across from her, and made a small adjustment.
"Some of them," she said. "I understand when something doesn't make sense."
The silence that followed was the kind she had learned to read over years of managing difficult conversations — the silence of someone deciding how much weight to give to something unexpected. She waited in it without fidgeting, which was harder than it sounded given that her body was seven years old and had opinions about stillness.
"Your father tells me you've been spending a great deal of time in the library," Aldwin said.
"I like the books," she said.
"What books?"
"History, mostly. And estate records." She paused, then added, with the slightly sheepish quality of a child admitting to something boring: "Ser Aldric says estate records aren't usually what children want to read."
"He's right." Her grandfather's expression had not changed, but something in it had shifted in a way she couldn't quite name. "Why do you want to read them?"
This was the question she had been waiting for, in one form or another, since she had arrived in this timeline. She had prepared twelve different answers for it, ranging from entirely evasive to dangerously honest, and she had ranked them by risk and utility and rehearsed the middle ground ones most carefully.
What she said was: "Because they're about us. The family. Where we came from and what we did with it." She looked at her hands on her lap — small hands, ink-free, the hands of a child who had not yet started keeping records. "I want to understand how it works."
Silence.
Then: "Come."
He stood, which surprised her, and moved around the desk toward the door to the garden.
The formal gardens of Ardenis House in late autumn were not at their most impressive, but they had the quality of old things that had learned to be dignified in all seasons — the bare trees standing with the patience of structures rather than plants, the stone paths clean and precise, the fountain still running despite the cold. Her grandfather walked with his hands clasped behind his back and his pace adjusted to hers without comment, which was the kind of courtesy that looked like nothing but required attention.
He stopped at a tree near the garden's center — not the largest, not the most dramatic, but old. Older, she thought, than most of the formal plantings. The bark was deeply furrowed, the trunk too wide for a child to get her arms around.
"My father planted this," Aldwin said. "The year he became Duke. He said every head of house should plant something they wouldn't live to see fully grown." He looked at it for a moment. "I used to think that was sentimental. I've revised that opinion."
She looked at the tree. She looked at her grandfather's face — the lines of it, the careful quality of his attention, the thing she had never quite been able to see clearly from the corridor outside his study.
"What did you plant?" she asked.
He looked at her then — a different look than the document-review. Genuinely surprised, in the small, controlled way that was all the surprise Aldwin Ardenis allowed himself.
"The oak by the east wall," he said. "The year your father was born."
She had walked past that oak every day for the past month. She had not known. In the previous version, no one had told her, and she had not thought to ask.
She looked toward the east wall. She could just see the oak's upper branches from here — bare now, but substantial, the kind of tree that had settled into itself.
"It's big," she said.
"Thirty-one years," he said. "They grow faster than you expect."
She thought about her father's voice reading to her in the nursery. She thought about the eight years she had, and the things she needed to do with them, and the conversation she was currently having which had moved somewhere she had not planned for and did not want to manage back to anything more useful.
She looked up at the old tree her great-grandfather had planted.
"Will you tell me about him?" she said. "Your father. The one who planted this one."
The pause this time was different from the pauses in the study. Quieter. Less assessment, more something else.
"He was difficult to know," Aldwin said. "He expected a great deal of people and said very little about what he expected, on the grounds that if they needed to be told they hadn't understood it yet." A slight pause. "I spent most of my childhood not understanding it yet."
"But you figured it out," she said.
"Eventually."
She looked at him sideways, the way that she had found worked better than looking directly when she wanted to catch something unguarded.
His expression was the same as it always was — composed, precise, carrying the weight of everything he had learned and decided not to show. But there was something in it, just for a moment, that reminded her of the old woman in the crowd outside the sealed gate. The salute to something that had been worth something.
"I'll tell Croft to arrange for you to attend the Tuesday trade reviews," her grandfather said, which was not a continuation of the conversation but was its own kind of answer to it. "They'll be too advanced for you, mostly. But you can sit in the corner and listen."
She looked at him.
He was already turning back toward the house.
"Thank you," she said, and followed.
She sat in the hidden passage for a long time after dinner.
The stone was cold and the light was low and she allowed herself, for the duration of the time it took the household to settle into its night routines, to feel what the afternoon had actually been.
Sitting beside her grandfather in the garden. Hearing about the tree and the man who planted it. Watching Aldwin Ardenis, who in the previous version had been a figure she had approached with the careful strategy of someone managing a resource, briefly become a person who had once been a child who didn't understand what his father expected of him.
She had not planned for that. She had planned for the trade review access — she had planned for that specifically, had ranked it as one of the three most critical early milestones, had laid the groundwork for it with the library and the dining room and the held eye contact. She had not planned for the oak tree, or for the thing that happened to her chest when he said *they grow faster than you expect.*
*You are becoming attached*, she told herself, which was simultaneously obvious and the kind of thing that needed saying.
*Good*, she decided, after a moment. *You should be attached. That's not a liability. That's the point.*
She opened the folder from Ser Aldric again.
In the passage's low light, she read the letter fragment one more time. The three sentences. The signature.
She had run the genealogical trace in her head three times since the library, and it came out the same each time. The name belonged to a branch of the imperial family that had been sidelined when the current Emperor's grandfather had consolidated the succession. A branch that had every reason to want the Witherborn bloodline understood as a curse rather than a complement. A branch whose interests aligned precisely with Kaelis Veren staying in his tower, isolated and dismissed, until the question of the succession was settled in a way that left no room for surprises.
She had thought, before, that Kaelis was in the Witherhold because the palace was afraid of him.
She had thought the fear was superstition — irrational, the kind of thing that sustained itself because no one with the standing to challenge it had ever bothered.
What the letter fragment suggested was different. The fear was real, but it was not superstition. It was the specific, targeted fear of people who knew exactly what Kaelis Veren represented and had taken deliberate steps to ensure no one else found out.
They had sealed the records. They had controlled the historical narrative. They had taken a six-year-old child and put him in a tower and told the world he was a monster, and then they had made sure that anyone who might have understood why that story was convenient would never be able to prove otherwise.
She pressed the letter fragment flat against her knee and thought about a boy who had been alone in a tower for five years already, who had been told his whole life that he was a curse, who had apparently believed it because what else did you do when everyone around you agreed.
She had thought about Kaelis Veren as a strategic asset.
She still thought about him that way. She would continue to think about him that way, because the strategy was correct and the timeline was real and the work still needed to be done.
But sitting in the cold passage with the old letter in her hands and the warmth of the afternoon still present somewhere under her sternum, she also thought about something else: that someone had known the truth about what he was and had very deliberately taken it from him, and that this was not a thing she was willing to let stand.
*Before his sixteenth birthday*, she thought.
And then, for the first time, added: *He shouldn't have to wait that long.*
She tucked the folder away, stood up, pushed the hidden door open, and walked back into the library.
Above the main shelves, the World Tree carving held its branches wide in the dark. She stood beneath it for a moment, looking up, and thought about everything it meant that the emblem of her family's power was a tree no one had ever bothered to understand — composite, assembled from five different sources, beautiful precisely because it drew from things that should not have gone together.
*Mixed*, she thought. *Like me.*
She had always been told that was the insult. The dilution. The proof that she was less.
She was beginning to understand it differently.
Her wrist was warm.
Outside, somewhere beyond the corridor and the sleeping household and the cold estate gardens, the roots of the World Tree ran deep in the dark earth, and eight days' ride north of Ardenholt, in a tower that the palace maps labeled only as a restricted residence, a boy was alone in the way that people became alone when the world had agreed to leave them that way.
He did not know her name.
She intended to change that, in approximately four years, give or take the complications that arose from living in a timeline that kept adjusting itself around her decisions.
*Soon enough*, she told the warmth in her wrist, or the roots under the floor, or whatever it was that listened.
She walked back to the nursery and went to sleep.
You've reached the end of this chapter
